Night view from the front of the cabin
    Dana C.

What a beautiful place. The man and I stayed here for 5 nights at the end of December. We stayed in one of the Sweetheart log cabins, #13, to be precise. This is a corner cabin, right at the place where the creek turns and bubbles down a tiny "waterfall". The creek is stocked with beautiful fish, and you can watch them swim up and down the creek. Every cabin has a wood-burning fireplace and both a front and back deck. Despite the cold, we bundled up and sat on that back deck every evening, sipping drinks and watching the stars. The grounds where the sweetheart cabins are located are just lovely. The resort is about 10 minutes from Petersburg, the closest town, restaurants, and grocery store, but I recommend driving another 15 minutes or so to Moorefield, a larger town with many more options. Every cabin has a full kitchen, which is perfect for these Covid times - no need to go to restaurants! Good thing, because nobody seemed to deliver. Perhaps just as enjoyable as the log cabin itself were the daily drives we took up the surrounding mountain roads. Literally every road we turned up provided breathtaking scenery and views. Great Covid getaway because you don't need to interact with anyone else. We did have a few small complaints: no dresser or closet for our clothes and no paper towels, napkins, or tissues provided (yes, there was toilet paper!). The towels and sheets were super high quality - a very nice surprise! I've said enough. I definitely recommend Smokehole, at least the honeymoon cabins. We plan to go back.

A couple snafus at registration and a wifi hiccup, but when we talked to the owners they quickly remedied these. We picked the first Wednesday in January and the sign on the gift shop- where we were told to register- says closed Wednesdays in January. Huh. Phone calls were never returned earlier in the day and we were about to give up. I decided to pull into the cabins and Smoke hole lodge and fortunately a groundskeeper was out as it was warm day in January. "Let me guess-you need directions". "Nope we paid on line, but the gift shop is closed". "No, the gift shop can't be closed!". Calls owner. The gift shop is closed. "She says your second email confirms your cabin number ". "Never got a second email". This confused everyone. She sends me second email. Wow. This booking hung on a thread. But it worked out in the end. Cabin 24 was lovely. And clean. And well maintained. And well built. Design is good too. You can watch tv from couch in front of fire, or bed. Nice. Full Kitchen. Eat in table doubles as a desk. Front porch. Hot tub. Hmmm. King bed. Back deck. Priceless. A warm day in January. Full moon. No wind- we sat on the deck and watched the stars above the valley behind the cabins. In the morning I sat with coffee on the back deck and nearly got sunburned. The wind in the front gets blocked by the cabin and it feels like 60 degrees. Coming back from an awesome hike at Spruce Knob, the wifi wasn't working. Called the owners son and he made some suggestions. And the next day we switched to cabin 29 where the wifi was working. Every cabin has a router. So comparison of the two cabins. 24 was the first one with the back deck, two skylights, smaller hot tub. Carpet around hot tub, bedroom and living room. Shingle roof (new) We moved to 29 with much better hot tub, newer flooring, no carpet, backsplash in kitchen, a few more utensils. Coffee for the coffee maker (full size in both 25&29) Metal roof. (New). Newer couch. Sled bed (King) So if you want to watch the stars, 24. If you want dark for sleeping, 29.

Cabins and resort showing mountains in the background.

We had a great breakfast, virtual tour, and hike on the property. The new owners are so accommodating, we could not wait to come back and experience true mountain charm. So we immediately booked for the fall foliage. Guys they still had rooms and those rooms are gorgeous. We can't wait to return to mountain hospitality, with electric chargers (WV just doesn't have them)

This is a unique place to stay for a getaway in West Virginia. The Inn is located about 8 miles…read moredown a single-track, winding road, so it really feels off the grid. You look out your window at trees, forests, and ridges. The owners have created a warm, friendly environment, with many decorations that make for a rustic feel. Overall the Inn is a really nice place to stay, but here are a few things to consider: - The driveway is a lengthy (0.2-mile), gravel-covered, steep hill. We have an SUV and each time we went up the driveway our lights went on indicating unstable traction. Keep this in mind if you have a smaller vehicle or plan to go in the snowy months. - Breakfast is complimentary and dinner is provided for an additional fee ($30 per person per night and $45 on Saturdays). The food is delicious and all home-made. Ed is a fantastic chef - see many pics posted below. However, he makes a set amount of food per-person and there is no extra food. The first night we were there my wife and I had done a long hike in the afternoon and we were very hungry. Dinner was tasty but it was not enough food for us. When I asked if we could have more Ed said there was none. So consider your personal needs when thinking about meals. Since the Inn is so secluded, it is not easy to drive to a restaurant (20-30 minutes at least). - Breakfast is at 8am and dinner is at 7pm. This is a reasonable schedule for most people. My wife and I are early risers though and found ourselves up long before breakfast, so it ended up feeing like we had to wait around before starting our day (there is a coffee & tea station setup that you can go to at any time of day). Again, this will work for some people but not others. - The wifi is spotty. It's good enough to look up directions on Google maps but you can't stream a show or movie if that's your kind of thing to do on vacation. - There were a few extra charges that we didn't expect. For example, dinner Saturday night was $45 per person and Ed offered us wine with dinner (he is a sommelier and has a great selection). We were surprised to see that the wine was $15 per glass when we got our final bill at checkout. We could have asked of course, but we didn't think of it and Ed didn't mention it.

Tube Park Review…read more This review is specific to the Tube Park. Highly recommend getting tickets ahead of time online. All sessions for the day were sold out when we visited. The lodge area for the tube park is very small, so don't expect to be able to change clothing quickly inside due to how busy it is. There's a fire place inside and a huge fire pit outside. Very small concession inside with about 8-10 small snack items to choose from. The staff here are top notch - very kind to each other and talkative to visitors. 10 minutes before the session starts, the group gets a safety briefing and reviews the rules. There's a nurse/medic on site. This is fun for the whole family. 1200 feet long and very fast. Be sure to read the requirements online for kids. Extra safety precautions are taken onsite for young kids.

I was disappointed with my stay at Canaan Valley Resort. As someone with disabilities, I found the…read moreproperty to be less accessible than expected, making it difficult to fully enjoy the experience. One of the most frustrating moments was at dinner. Our tour group was told we could not sit by the windows and enjoy the view because we were "with a tour and not paying customers." Considering many of us paid nearly $2,000 for this trip, that was insulting. We were also not allowed to order from the regular menu and pay ourselves if we wanted something else. Unfortunately, the meal provided left me sick for going on 2 days. The resort itself also had several maintenance and convenience issues. The ice machine on our floor was broken, the snack machine and soda machine was nearly empty, and the shower had VERY poor water pressure. The gift shop closed before 7 p.m., making it impossible to purchase basic necessities when needed. There was also very little to do in the evenings. The pool closes at 8 p.m., and by 7 p.m. most activities and amenities seemed to be shut down, leaving guests with few options other than returning to their rooms to watch TV. Overall, the resort did not meet my expectations, particularly regarding accessibility, guest experience, and customer service.

Such a cool place…read more My family and I (two adults, two kids) stayed in the Gathering Tree. It featured three beds, a master bedroom with a private deck, a large main deck, a spiral staircase, a dining room table, mini fridge, hot plate, two futons, kitchen utensils, a small TV with DVD player and coffee making equipment. There are lots of places to lounge both inside and outside the tree. Outside the treehouse there is a fire pit which we used for s'mores and potatoes. There is a place to purchase firewood right on Ella's property. The property has a .75 mile trail through the woods with numerous animal discoveries along it. My son and I enjoyed trying to find them all and predict what would come next. The property also had many fairy gardens around it. There is also a fort building area giving families many options to do outside. Ella's is an awesome, upscale nature experience in the Deep Creek area. We will definitely return during our next visit to Deep Creek.
