There was a little bit of a wait, but this wasn't anything unexpected, as brunch time on a Sunday is always going to be busy. They had a little area outside to sit and order drinks, so I ordered an ube chai. We were called in fairly quickly, and first off, the vibe is super fun. The music that was playing was also right up my alley. Second, the servers and service was quick, and third, the food was AMAZE. We had the steak and eggs, brunch burger, biscuits and gravy, and a side of Johnny cakes (they were bigger than our hands!). Everything was delish! The place sits kind of randomly in the middle of the neighborhood, so it definitely felt unique, and we were super happy to support. I hope to return sooner than later!

Menus...I normally don't comment on the menu itself but our table featured no less than 4 different menus...the regular menu, a drink menu, a specials menu and a mimosas menu...choices are wonderful, but the immediate reaction is this is a whole mess of menus on the table, and I don't know what to look at first. It felt haphazard. Let's move on to the coffee...Coffee is an essential part of the brunch experience. Even at a diner, you want it to be strong...the mug it came in was nice, but it was weak coffee. I need coffee to kick my butt, and if you're serving what's close to "browned water" at a breakfast place, you're missing the mark. How about the food? I can't fault them for the generosity of the portions, but will say individual dishes were way too much for my wife and I...we wish smaller portions were available, so so much didn't go to waste. My wife had the Egg and Waffle sandwich with waffle fries. It was fine. I had the Harvest Hash made with egg whites...the eggs were a little overcooked. (Egg whites require a thoughtful touch when cooking them so they are finished white and not browning all over.) There are plenty of fresh tomatoes, mushrooms, and peppers in there (I guess that's the extent of the harvest in Milwaukee) The hashbrowns it all sat on were undercooked. We were excited about the croissant beignets...Available were the regular ones with chocolate or strawberry dipping sauce, and a special with a fruit dipping sauce. They couldn't mix and match sauces, so we got the special. They were okay but a bit over-fried, losing the croissant texture altogether ...I mean, there's nothing wrong with deep-fried dough with sweet things to dip them in, but we do wish they hadn't fried the croissant out of them to give us the unique experience implied by the name. The menu has plenty to choose from...every breakfast savory or sweet thing you could imagine...and on the nicely designed, modern-looking menu at looks like it could be amazing...but everything we got, plus the experience of sitting in a place that felt a little rundown, left us overall disappointed.

Being the self-proclaimed "Condimenteer" that I am, Smoke Shack speaks my language, especially since one of my all-time top favorite condiments is bbq sauce and they offer several. But I'm getting ahead of myself...let's talk about the meat, after all, that's what this place is all about. I've had the the pulled pork and the brisket sloppy joe. While the pulled pork is delicious enough on it's own (moist, flavorful, and a heaping pile to feed me for days!), adding the "House" sauce and cole slaw (on a bun) pulls the whole thing together. What impressed my by the Brisket Sloppy Joe, beside the fact that it was also delicious, was that the Chef wasn't happy with the first plate he made for me, so he threw together a brand new batch o'joes for me. Yes, I had to wait a few minutes longer, but it was worth it, and he was pretty snappy. I appreciated that. Now the bbq sauces, all delicious...you get the vinegar-y based ones, the sweeter, the spicier...and of course, you can always mix them altogether. And if you somehow have enough room for dessert after your heaping plate of delicious meats (and multitude of sides), then go for the Bacon Brownie. Yes, there's even meat in the desserts, and for good reason. The boozie Whiskey Ice Cream combined with the salt of the bacon and richness of the brownie...mouth watering. Their friendly service and great decor were just icing on the cake (or pecan pie in this instance.) read more

I'm seriously a fan. I went with 3 friends on a Saturday night. We had an hour wait (which makes sense considering how small the interior is) but the hostess was very nice and we just popped next door for a quick drink before returning. We were seated right at the hour mark (way to go, host staff!). Our server (and DARN, I can't remember her name... because she was TERRIFIC!!!) was a ton of fun and incredibly knowledgeable and helpful in deciding what to order. We started with the stuffed poblano and the pulled pork nachos. Both terrific. I loved the poblano and one of my friends couldn't stop raving about the nachos (made with fresh jalapenos, which was great). We had the brisket sammich, plain brisket entree, and the pulled pork sammich, as well as 'upgraded' to the decadent mac and cheese for our side. All fantastic choices - and the cornbread with the entree was amazing. For dessert, we had the pecan pie with the whiskey ice cream - amazing! The interior and the bar area were fantastic - one of my friends commented that it felt like we'd stepped out of Milwaukee for a bit. All in all, I'm totally a fan. I've had BBQ in Kansas City, Memphis, Texas and North Carolina - both at restaurants and at various BBQ competitions. I have to say that the pulled pork is the best I've had. Perfectly smoked, you could truly taste the meat and the smoke. I love that the sauce is served on the side. We also had Mac & Cheese which is worth all of the calories it must contain. You'll want to stuff your pockets full of the corn bread. It is the best thing since sliced.... corn bread. The environment is so unique. This is a place you'll want to take out of town guests to. It is energetic, fun, busy and exactly what a BBQ joint should be. I can't wait to go back and try the ribs. Great job Smoke Shack!! read more

We decided to catch a quick lunch and had been craving some good bbq. I would say the food was ok. I ordered the brisket sandwich with No bread and my boyfriend ordered the brisket and chicken combo. First they brought out a few pieces of brisket that were extremely fatty. I expressed my concern and our waitress was super understanding. She brought out a few more pieces of brisket and it was much better. They have a variety of sauces which I thought was nice. You certainly can find a sauce that suits you. The cornbread was certainly the best thing on the table. I would come again if I absolutely had to but it wouldn't be my first choice for bbq. read more

My friend and I were craving barbecue, and Smoke Shack definitely hit the spot! Our food arrived quickly, and we loved the variety of sauces to choose from. The sides were generous, and the street corn was a standout - seriously delicious. I tried the pulled chicken, which was a tad dry, but the brisket more than made up for it. It was juicy, tender, and packed with flavor. Although I didn't indulge this time, I was impressed by their extensive bourbon selection. Overall, a great experience! Yes, finally sit down BBQ in downtown Milwaukee. Really cool feel to the place. I preferred the spare ribs, my wife preferred veggies. We were both quite happy and full today. Next time dessert. Having spent many years living in the South, I was a bit weary about an bona fide Bbq joint this far North, but Smoke Shack didn't disappoint! The staff was really friendly and accommodating, which just made my food more satisfying! I was pleased to see that Smoke Shack just used dry rubs on their meats and allowed for customers to sauce their own food. For the price of the meal, the quality was extremely low. One of my worst meals this year. If I was a chef - I'd be embarrassed this left my kitchen. Lastly, ordered a prickly pear cocktail. Tasted like watermelon. I've had prickly pear juice and drinks before- this had no discernible flavor that resembled prickly pear. All in all- I cannot recommend this restaurant at all. Please- go somewhere else. Anywhere. This food was just flat out bad and very poor quality.

Online it says the kitchen is open daily until 10pm so I'm not sure why that day was different. After reluctantly taking our order, he took the menus and threw them back onto the bar and walked away. It was super awkward and made us feel uncomfortable. Ten minutes later, we got our burgers & fries. The burger was juicy and had great flavor. The fries were perfectly crispy. After a while, he came back over and decided he wasn't annoyed any more. He proceeded to engage in conversation with us until we left. The food is great for bar food, but the service is not the best to say the least.

The place is vintage Wisconsin. A mixed clientele: old folks like us, families, young people who might be on a date. Everyone was made to feel welcome. The food is a step back in time and the recipes are timeless. We had the fish fry which is difficult to get where we live. Nice people, nostalgic atmosphere, good food and fair prices. We will return on our next trip.
