-Pulled Pork Sandwich + -Beef Fat Tots
    Dustin H.

A really solid BBQ spot. I tried a pick-3 meat platter with ribs, pulled pork, and brisket. For sides I went with beef fat fries + mac n cheese, and I added cornbread. My wife got a pulled pork sandwich and beef-fat tots. Our dining friends ordered some of the pork cracklings as a shareable side. All in all, the food was outstanding-- the cornbread was absolutely terrific, perhaps the best I've ever had. The mac and cheese is smoky and flavorful. The brisket was tasty, as was the pulled pork. The cracklins were fantastic! While good, the ribs were not particularly outstanding; and some of the pulled pork and brisket was a bit fattier than I prefer, but not terribly so. In short, very good if not absolute best BBQ I've ever had. But good enough I'd return. Clean, large space with some great drink specials and options as well (it looks like). Prices roughly what you'd expect for quality meat in 2025 with all our current economic issues entail. It's self-serve, but they do drop your plates.

Look closely to see the literal puddle of grease at the bottom of the pulled pork :/

I chose Blue Oak as my new dining experience out this week. I've been curious to try it since it opened as it came pretty hyped up and I love bbq. This restaurant is located in the trendy and flashy MidCity development. I imagine it's a popular place to go before a visit to the Orion Amphitheater. It has a sort of sports bar / juke joint type of feel. As with many other businesses in MidCity, there's street parking nearby, with the caveat that you MUST back into a spot or risk a ticket. I chose instead to park in the larger lot in front of the development and walk over since spaces are limited and I didn't feel like maneuvering my car that carefully. There was no wait when I arrived for a later lunch. One sign directed me to counter service and another option for full service was also on display. I chose counter to be lower maintenance; that seems to be the choice of most. There's a nice large bar near the entrance and an open-air patio. The menu is on a few screens on the wall. I had a bit of a hard time seeing without my glasses but I managed. The young women working at the counter were very pleasant and made nice small talk. They have a few daily specials and then a bunch of consistent bbq staples. I ordered the pulled pork plate with fries and garlic macaroni and cheese. I was somewhat disappointed to find they do not offer Coke Zero here, only Diet Coke. I got my number and found a spot. Not too many spots for parties less than four, but I didn't feel bad at a 4-top since it wasn't busy. I used the restroom while I waited and found it very clean with nice, private stalls. Three bbq sauces awaited me on the table. One was a sort of spicy Carolina sauce, another was their standard sauce, and the last was a jerk bbq sauce. The Carolina sauce wasn't particularly spicy and was so incredibly watery it was hard to use without dousing your entire plate with it. The standard sauce was just okay; again, too thin and watery for my preference, and also a little too vinegary. I like a sweet Memphis style sauce. The closest to that was the jerk bbq sauce but it had a strong nutmeg/cinnamon flavor to it that was a little off-putting. I didn't particularly care for any of the sauces. The side items, especially the beef fat fries, were pretty good. The fries were hot and crispy and had discernible seasoning (though I wouldn't have been mad at a bit more). The garlic mac and cheese was HEAVY on the garlic and I couldn't eat all of it, but I did enjoy a few bites before it got overpowering. The crumbly breadcrumbs were a nice touch. The pork was...not for me. It featured a lot of burnt ends; I tend to like the interior cuts of meat better. It was decently smoky and tender, but the main problem was it was overwhelmingly greasy and fatty. It bled through the container it was served in and left a gigantic puddle on the paper before it was even placed in front of me. It was practically swimming in it. Greasier than even the fresh fries. Not awesome, especially when you can't find a sauce you like to try to drown it out. I can't say I'd never return, but it definitely won't be on the top of my list. I do appreciate the nice service, clean bathrooms, and tasty French fries. Maybe if there's a next time I'll come on a day when their bbq potato is on special. That's a reliable favorite for me.

Great bbq! The Brussels sprouts are amazing. Cooked perfectly and covered in a delicious, sticky honey sauce. Brisket, pork and chicken hit the spot! Definitely a great stop!

Some of the best smoked chicken and brisket I have ever had. Tender, delicious, flavorful. The Asian ginger slaw is incredible. The cajuny mac and cheese was basically heaven. And not pictured but get the pork cracklins!

Comfy and airy ambiance! Everything we ordered were delicious: Ribs, baked beans were kickass, pork belly crackling chicharrón Szechuan rub, pickle slices, etc. You can get combo of sweet tea and unsweetened tea, so that it's not too sweet. Service was good! Highly recommend.

    Smoked wings ($9)

Found this recommendation here (thanks, Yelpers!) and stopped by on a Wednesday evening around 6:30. There was a good crowd of diners, several at the bar watching sports in the big screens, and a few people in line. Atmosphere is lively, with music and the noise of diners talking and eating. It's counter service, delivered to your table. I decided to try something different for me: an order of 5 dry-rub smoked wings ($9) and a bowl of brisket and sausage gumbo ($10). I grabbed my fountain drink and chose a table, and my order took less than 10 minutes to arrive. The wings were delicious, not overly meaty and full of flavor. I liked the Alabama white sauce that came along for dipping, as well as a few pieces of celery. Five was the perfect amount,, but you can add five more for an extra $9. I also really liked to the gumbo, although it reminded me more of a stew than a gumbo. There was a scoop of rice in the middle and diced green onions on top, but it didn't quite have that dark roux flavor I expect in a gumbo. Nonetheless, it was still delicious and I ate every bite. I'd read on Yelp that the biggest complaint here are the flies, and that is the truth. They're really kind of everywhere and certainly annoying. I noticed several unwiped tables around me, and that could be part of it. I would come back here again and next time, I plan to order the smoked peach cobbler.

Two meat plate - Brisket and House made green onion sausage link
    Madhurima D.

Ordered their Two meat plate with Brisket and house made green onion sausage link. Ordered brussel sprouts on the side and broccoli cheddar soup extra. Cheddar was not completed melted in the soup and lumped up. Soup was also salty. Brussel sprouts were perfectly roasted and smothered with a sweet sauce. I loved every bit of them. Coming to the Brisket, it melted in my mouth. It was fatty and delicious! Definitely one of the best I ever tried. Onion sausage was satiating and well made.

Food is always amazing here!!! I love the special menu that always changes. The Winter Heat Burger, incredible, tator tots are unmatchable and happy hour never disappoints. I've also tried the ribs and they just fell off the bone. Staff is always helpful and friendly.

Loved it. Got the 3 meat platter and it was so tasty. My daughter got a cheeseburger and it was ample. Special kudos to the beef fat fries. Your cardiologist probably doesn't want you to come here every day but every once in a while it would be a yes! I will be back 100%!

    -Jalapeno Cheddar & Sausage Cornbread
    Charles C.

Excellent BBQ all around. The jalapeño cheddar sausage cornbread was out of this world! Mac n Cheese is a heavy on the garlic if you're into that (it works very well). We had pulled pork, sliced brisket, chopped brisket, coleslaw, Mac n cheese, baked beans, jalapeño cheddar sausage cornbread, and mini pulled pork nachos. Going to have to go back and try the turkey when they have it!

The smoked wings were delicious as well and paired perfectly with the white sauce. The mac wasn't the greatest but I enjoyed the potato salad. The Texas toast was a great addition and was perfect for creating a little bbq sandwich. My total came out to around $32 which I felt was a bit pricey when I had paid but after getting my plate I realized how large the portions were which totally justified the cost. At most BBQ restaurants I usually finish all my food but here I had left overs so I basically got 2 meals out of the one plate. This! Place! Needs! More! Hype!…read more Okay, back to typing normally. Kar's Char is a relatively new Texas-style bbq place inside of Lowe Mill. It occupies the full restaurant space that used to belong to The Veggie and belonged to Happy Tummy before that. It's to the left of Piper and Leaf as you face P&L from the parking lot. I only belabor this point because some folks do have a hard time navigating Lowe Mill and no one should miss out on giving this place a try because they can't find it. I saw a few posts about Kar's Char when they first opened and have had them bookmarked since then. Recently, I was in the area after work around 2 PM and looking to kill some time before a doctor's appointment. I was feeling hungry and figured why not give them a go and enjoy a little time at the Mill while I waited. I arrived and took a few minutes to look at the menu. I am, admittedly, freakishly obnoxious and snobby about barbeque and was determined to have a positive experience, so I decided not to play with fire that day and instead decided to order one of their burgers, which I'd seen a few people rave about online. I selected their hatch green chili cheeseburger and placed an order for that. It comes with one side and I decided on macaroni and cheese. They have bottled drinks available next to the register and so I grabbed a water out of the cooler to round things out. My burger was cooked fresh just for me so I had a few minutes to hang around and take in the fun, nerdy, classic Lowe Mill ambiance. This is a truly local business and they seem very dedicated to supporting and uplifting their fellow businesses in and around the Mill. The service I received was incredibly kind and welcoming -- they really do seem like lovely folks here. My burger came out piping hot and cooked perfectly, with slightly crispy, charred edges and a juicy center. It was a delicious burger, slightly spicy but nothing scary, and I especially loved the chili lime aioli -- added a nice creaminess and moisture. To my pleasant surprise, the soft, lightly toasted bun held up to all the goodness pretty well! Next time I will probably ask for no pickles -- I found their flavor a little overwhelming -- but I am also hot and cold on my feelings about pickles so your mileage may vary! I say keep them on if you're a big fan, and take them off if not. :) The macaroni and cheese was enjoyable but not as good as the burger. Next time I come I will probably try out a different side. Overall, 4.5/5, with extra high marks for the hatch green chili burger and the charming, welcoming staff/owners. I'll be back to try the actual barbeque, and certainly to have another burger!

Prices are from an era that's now long gone, making this not only incredible BBQ, but also a steal for the money. I mean, who sells a BBQ pork sandwich for under $5 in 2026? Many staff working here clearly have been around for a long, long time. So, one might ask, what should I get at Big Bob's? For starters, the chicken wings. Likely the best smoked wings to be had anywhere: just the right amount of smokey profile while being tender and juicy. True perfection in something that's hard to master. Next, one of the samplers is not a bad idea. Pulled pork is truly state of the art, winning many competitions around the South. Ribs are fall off the bone and delicious. Brisket is good, but a low fat version that might or might not be to someone's taste. Hand cut French fries and baked beans as a side, and finally, life is all set. I do not remember Brunswick stew tasting sweet. The quart of stew had 10 tiny pieces of potato and a few corn kernels. I saw some pork meat floating in a strange red colored broth. I remember when stewed tomatoes were in the stew. Not anymore. The soupy stew did not taste very good. 2/5 The potato with pulled pork was ok. Our sides were mac and cheese and green beans. The young lady helping us alluded that Ted's would perhaps mix and match the meats if we wanted, for example, half pork, half smoked turkey. I'm not exactly sure about this. Melissa and I agreed the green beans could benefit from some pork ends tossed in and also some salt and pepper. We enjoyed Ted's last night!
