I stopped in here for lunch yesterday. I think it would surprise no one that my apartment locating office is literally right next door, and yet I'd never bothered to stop in until now. Mostly because my barbecue loyalties lie elsewhere, but a brisket sandwich was a craving I just couldn't deny. It's a small space, but very hill country "Texas" in its feel, especially for being located in an unremarkable strip center. The bottles of sauce arranged by the counter disoriented me for a moment, as it reminded me a lot of Rudy's. I had to remember it was Smokey Mo's. I ordered a combo plate for $7.95, which includes your choice of two meats and two sides. I chose brisket and turkey, along with potato salad and fried okra. With a large iced tea, lunch came to around $10. There were two employees, one friendly and the other one a little more abrupt. I'm being polite when I say "'abrupt", as when I received my plate, there was no okra. With no explanation, I inquired as to its whereabouts and he sort of snapped: "It's cooking." Like I'm automatically supposed to know that. Like I said: abrupt. I also had to ask for bread to make my sandwich; they had told me earlier it was included, but they made me ask them again, and it was sort of thrust at me. Well, OK then... The brisket was lean, and was above average tender. As I munched on the sandwich, I saw a sign that instructed customers to specify whether they wanted moist or lean brisket. I had just said "brisket", but no one followed up with "moist or lean?" So, I'm assuming I got lean because it was...well, lean. The turkey was nice as well, and I would have liked to make a sandwich out of it, but the guys working there looked like they were eating lunch and I didn't want to bother them for another two slices of bread. The okra was OK (at least it was fresh and hot), but my favorite was hands down the cool, creamy mustard potato salad. I should have had a double serving of that. I noticed a fridge full of pudding and cake desserts, but skipped it for now. Hey--for what it is, it's not bad. It's affordable, accessible barbecue right in my part of town (and next to my office). Even today I have to admit I'm still a little put off by that one guy, though. Maybe he was hungry, because as I left he was chowing down on what looked like a salad topped with brisket. The quality has gone down. Smokey's Mo's was always a go to for us. The last time we went the food was off, we thought maybe it was a bad day. Ordered the bakers again tonight. They were cold & rock hard almost like they weren't cooked all way. They were completely inedible. Half of my husband's potato was black inside. The brisket was fatty & seriously lacking in flavor. Well. I've officially been to this restaurant three times now. Sadly, I do not much care for either their potato salad or coleslaw. This majorly upsets me because I LOVE cold potato with my bbq. Slaw, my default back up, and neither I like. But, their baked potatoes are TO DIE FOR. Top it with chopped beef, and that's the best damn potato you've ever had. I was totally impressed with how tender and moist the baked potato was, plus the butter, bacon, sour cream & chives.....MAN I had a bbq plate at another of their locations, and so far I'm happy with their chopped beef. I go past Smokey Mo's BBQ on my way to HEB so tonight it was time to see what this place was like. I didn't read any reviews, just walked in to this small, what looks like privately owned BBQ place. At the back of the store, which happens to be the shortcut to HEB they have a smoker, so I knew that the BBQ was going to be at least made on site. I ordered a turkey plate with fried okra and corn on the cob, it came with their own BBQ sauce. The turkey had no fat and had a hickory smoked taste :), the fried okra was standard, but the corn on the cob was a little too brown-ish yellow for me to attempt to eat. The BBQ sauce was oh-so-good, had a little kick to it and was full of flavor. I'll definitely be picking some of their sauce up again. To compare, Rudy's turkey this definitely had more flavor, just their sides were lacking. I would probably go back and try something different on the menu. But its not the best BBQ i have had from a similar local restaurant. read more

We love our Texas bbq, but we also know to keep our expectations reasonable when it comes to local places for takeout. Unfortunately when my husband picked up dinner here tonight, we received some of the worst brisket we've ever had. It was so dry that it crumbled into bits while trying to lift it with a fork from the wrapper to the plate. So disappointing. Definitely a waste of money since it was inedible as anything but chopped beef. The potato salad was pretty standard, so no issues there. The food is good at Smoky Mo's but yesterday I called in an order of three chop beef and one sliced beef for dinner for my family. I picked up the food and we were ready to eat dinner and I realized one bun had no meat on it at all. I called and the staff offered to give me my money back or give me a sandwich if I drove over there. So I had to have a dinner with one person not having any food and then I had to drive back over to the restaurant. Awful experience at Avery ranch location!!! BUYER BEWARE!! I wad ordering to go and paid $11 for frito pie with brisket! cashier asked me to answer questions on touch pad (hinting about tip) I didn't tip because i Was ordering at counter and serving myself. I was the ONLY CUSTOMER with 3 people behind counter and they proceeded to hand chop my brisket for frito pie which was 80% FAT....literally! I've known Eric the owner here for a few years now back when I was managing Apartments Now right next door. I used to always go in for a turkey wrap which was always great. It was really hard to beat sub $3.00 for something actually not bad for you at lunch. Well I moved over to 183 and Burnet for work, but a friend of mine started working at Apartment's Now. She asked me today to join her for a burger and fries at Smokey Mo's. Of course I'm down! Eric always serves quality food, but honestly the burger surprised me. Damn it was delicious! The bun was not soggy, and the meat was cooked perfectly....and the fries...oh damn the fries! The fries were fantastic! I wanted to write a better review. I really, really did. Smokey Mo's is the closest barbeque joint to my apartment. Because of this, whenever I don't feel like cooking dinner and am in the mood for barbeque, Smokey Mo's is usually my weapon of choice. However, coming here is a roll of the dice, and after tonight, a retrospective honesty check forces me to accept that more often than not, I lose that dice roll. Texas barbeque joints will always and forever be judged on the quality of their brisket. A barbeque joint may have the greatest ribs on the face of the planet, but the fact remains that no one will ever know about it if their brisket is crap. On some occasions, the brisket from Smokey Mo's is very good. Tonight's offering however was about as bad as its ever been. In the 22 years I've been a resident of Austin, I don't believe I've ever had brisket as tough as I had from Smokey Mo's tonight. The first time I tried to bite into it, my jaw bounced back up so hard I would have sworn the stuff was made of rubber. I ended up throwing the majority of it away, and instead reheated leftover macaroni and cheese from last night. When a man of Texas throws away barbeque in favor of a meal made by the people of Kraft, you know that a true tragedy has taken place. The staff at Smokey Mo's is very friendly, but the guys who work the counter / cut the meat are kids, and they honestly don't know how to do it. I have a feeling that contributes to the issues I often have with this place, but even the Black and Kreutz families of Lockhart wouldn't have been able to cut the meat from Smokey Mo's tonight in a manner that would have made it edible. If I had to guess, I'd say that the were running low on brisket, and turned up the oven so it would be ready quicker. Like I said, I really wanted to write a good review for Smokey Mo's. I think the reason I've held off for so long on writing a review was that I kept hoping it would get better. Now, I sit here, a man filled on cold macaroni and cheese, when all I wanted was a brisket sandwich, and I'm forced to look at the world with colder, wiser eyes. I'm not going to give them 1 star, because on rare occasions, their food is actually pretty good. If you want to try them out for yourself, please do. I go to Smokey Mo's occasionally for lunch because it's close to work and my coworkers love it. It's decent. I'd just assume drive the extra 5 mins and hit up Rudy's, but it's whatever. I usually get pork ribs and/or turkey. Sometimes I get the turkey baker (baked potato with chopped turkey on top). It's pretty delicious, actually. The portions are very generous, and it's a good value for the price you pay. The location is kinda weird. It's in a dying strip center that probably would no longer exist if it weren't for the HEB anchor. So, yeah...parking it plentiful... The guys that work behind the counter are nice, too. I don' t have any serious complaints. It's just nothing to get overly excited about. It's decent food that's close by. read more

That wasn't even the reason we won't be back as much as the place was dingy, and not appealing to want to dine in. On top of all that, the MANAGER was a douche to us, bad attitude, very condescending, and all around just a piss poor attitude. Made it very clear we wouldn't be back, and he was very unconcerned about losing customers because of his specific attitude. Sometimes you get the BBQ bug and you just want some pretty good, fast brisket. What I'm not okay with is employees who act like they are doing you a favor by taking your order. If you are so miserable that you can't someone's order without being an obnoxious jerk go work somewhere else. During these times, I'm very selective of when and where I choose to eat. Rhymes with Pok-E-Jos. Hmmmm.....yes, this is another Strip Mall BBQ joint in a town that tries to make sure there is one within spitting distance from EVERYONE. Turns out that "spitting distance" is appropriate. I had the Monday lunch special and it wasn't special. At least not in the intended sense of the word. The sausage was remedial to average. The brisket was, crumbly, a bit dry and lacking in self-esteem. The sauce (I had the mild one only because I didn't notice the spicy one cowering behind it) was pretty good. Sides: Mashed potatoes and Coleslaw were good! And even better with the BBQ sauce. I think this rates as a passable BBQ joint and I wouldn't feel too bad in recommending it if you're car isn't working or you are on a fast lunch break from Freescale on Parmer. But I may try to persuade you into another cuisine altogether. read more
