picked up a few side items to try and make life easy. i've heard good things about this place but I wasn't too impressed. creamed corn tasted like canned corn in a bowl of mayo. potato salad was very underwhelming and missing that classic taste- not sure if it was just seasoning that was missed or what. the only semi decent thing was the blueberry cobbler but it was potentially something you can find in the frozen isle and bake at home for the same price. i've tried all 3 things at different times and not sure i'd spend money on anything from here in the future.

Went for lunch on 11/19/24. The line was a few deep and moved a little slow. They have counter people to take your order or touch screens which I used and it was easy and very quick. The food came out about 10 minutes later and was hot and fresh. They have 4 TVs to keep your eyes busy while you wait. I have eaten bbq 100s of times over the years and thought this was as good as any. I got just a 1 meat(brisket) and mac and cheese with onion rings. Loved all of it. The onion rings were amazing and not the typical frozen type many restaurants tend to use. Going back on Friday for more good stuff.

First time I tried the True Texas BBQ brisket sandwich I was very impressed. The second time I opted for the Txas Size brisket sandwhich and the brisket was good but the bun was stale. Today was my third and final visit. Again I ordered the Texas size brisket sandwhich. The bun was stale and completely flat and the brisket was not sliced, just big hunks of dry brisket. What started out as merriage in heaven ended in divorce. No thankd HEB!

Large eat-in space or you can take items to go. The kiosks are placed too close to the in-person ordering counter that it creates confusion for folks in line. Staff are friendly and patient, even when things got busy. Turkey was delicious and moist, so full of flavor! I honestly couldn't believe it. Brisket was pretty good. We got the fatty kind and the fat layers were substantial. Good flavor. Brisket chili was okay. Flavor was top notch, but brisket chunks in chili were cut too large. Brisket beans were so very delicious. Collard greens were pretty good - slightly muted flavor which worked against all the other flavors across other items. Mac & cheese was outstanding. I don't normally like mac & cheese, but this caught my attention. Burnt ends were served covered in sauce so you didn't really get the burnt end flavor or experience.

When you come to Central Texas, there's only one grocery store you need to know about: H-E-B. They do so many things so well, including their private label store brands. This extends to their in-store restaurants. I was shopping at the new store in Pflugerville and stopped in for a bite at True Texas BBQ. For an in-store outlet it's pretty impressive with a huge dining room and a counter with eight craft or local beers on tap. They have a pretty wide ranging menu and while I can't attest to all of the items, the barbecue that I tried was excellent. I got the one meat plate and received a decent portion of moist brisket along with brisket beans, and collard greens. The brisket was good with a beautiful smoke ring. It wasn't the best I've ever had, but considering this is a fast food outlet it really stands out and is better than some standalone restaurants. One thing that was a surprise was the beans with big chunks of their brisket and a very nicely spiced bean concoction. The collard greens were OK but probably not better than what you might find at Cracker Barrel. The service here is friendly as you'd expect from H-E-B and I didn't have to wait long for my food. Overall, the value for the price is outstanding. This is definitely a great stop for a quick lunch or dinner, especially if you have to go pick up some groceries. Highly recommended.

However the great pitmaster, John Brotherton, who made Brotherton's Black Iron Barbecue a legendary place passed away a year ago. He was only 49. His death was sudden and shocking. Net of being a great cook, he apparently was also a great human being. He was much beloved in the Pflugerville community. When a master chef dies, It is usually very hard to his or her restaurant to recover. Brotherton's has taken a serious serious loss. * * * 1) The brisket that was once exceptionally tasty now does not taste like much. 2) Ribs that were highly regarded are now nothing special. 3) I can't say whether the pitmaster was responsible for the sides. However the tater tot casserole has become unpleasant. The beans don't have anything to them. * * * Fortunately I was with charming and absolutely delightful company. So the conversation over the table sparkled. The living carry on many of the good things of life. Those good things take more forms than just the food we put in our mouths. * * * That said, Brotherton's is a serious reminder that death comes to us all. What started as a joke about the name "Porky-Jo's" eventually became Pok-e-Jo's, and in 1979 the first restaurant opened on North Burnet Road with a mission to serve authentic, satisfying Texas barbecue. The atmosphere is casual, welcoming, and unpretentious, with the kind of comfort that comes from a place focused more on barbecue. The menu covers all the Texas staples...brisket, ribs, sausage, and pulled pork...served in generous portions alongside traditional sides like potato salad, mac and cheese, fried okra, and baked potato casserole. Since our trip is close, we decided not to cook to avoid leftovers. We ordered ribs and chicken that were flavorful and tender. Our sides included potato salad (a bit bland), broccoli salad (delicious), fruit (fresh), blonde brownies with nuts and chocolate chips (excellent). The meal also came with Texas toast. The Pok-e-Jo's staff was friendly and helpful. It has been a minute since we have eaten at Pok-e-Jo's BBQ. Good experience...we will keep them in mind in the future.

The sides weren't that bad and the bbq sauce were solid. What really left a bad taste in my mouth is the lack of portion and quality of the burnt ends and banana pudding. The burnt ends didn't even fill out a portion of the box and not only that, they were hard as rocks and way too overcooked, not tender in the slightest. The banana pudding lacks any authenticity as it lacks banana flavoring and tastes like a tub of pillsbury icing with banana chunks and coloring thrown in.

It doesn't look like much, but it is certainly a destination. It is the smells of smoked barbecue that gently waft over Manor. It is a reminder that we live in Texas where smoked meat is a thing. I took pictures of signs and their outdoor seating arrangements as well as their drive-through. Then, I went inside and took a look around. I was met by a small crowd and very busy cooks behind the counter. I took some pictures and finally got to meet the staff. They are very polite, and greeted me with a smile and asked me what I wanted to order. I couldn't make up my mind, but I did ask a lot of questions to get an idea how to position their advertising. So much to choose from. It sounds to me that this is the type of place where you order- pick up and go on a picnic or bring to your home to feed the masses. That was my take away; A picnic table, bench, and a broad selection of meats. You can't beat the prices here either. For the same price of going to McDonald's, you can order A better tasting meal. I prefer supporting our local businesses so that they can remain here and serve the loyal customer base. To be honest, I didn't order anything. But I did see the range of food that they do serve and they do very well for the selections. The food here sounds to be very consistent. I plan on coming back and having a sit down with Gary who is the owner there. He's a pretty neat guy from what I hear.

I came in near closing on a rainy night and they took extra time to make me a perfect plate. I even ordered an extra brisket sandwich to go which they took the time to trim the fat off if you desired. The meats definitely carried a strong unmistakable Smokey taste. The sauce was very peppery so you might want to sample that first before fully committing.

The Best in Central Texas!…read more I've tried BBQ from all over, and while I might be a little biased, I firmly believed that the best BBQ was in Florida... until I tried Smoky Buns. First, let's talk about the location. It's tucked down a bumpy road between two duplex apartments. It sounds a little sketchy, but trust me, it is so worth it (definitely drive your truck or SUV if you have one!). This place is a true hidden gem. They have a dope setup with covered outdoor seating if you want to chill and eat there, but we ended up taking ours to go. Now, for the food. I ordered the 1 Meat Brisket Plate, which comes with a side, sauce, and pickles/pickled onions. Bro... that brisket was like butter. I know "tenderism" is trending all over social media right now, but this right here is the real deal!! It was so incredibly soft. For my side, I got the potato salad. To be honest, it was a little bland on its own, but it actually worked as a nice, solid base for me to hook it up my own way once I got home. Overall, Smoky Buns is a dope spot and easily hands-down the best BBQ in Central Texas!!!! I will absolutely be back.
