The other day, I passed by Gus's World Famous Chicken and today I am dining in. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Rustic looking interior with photos, signs, two tvs, and very crowded at lunch time.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I was warmly greeted at the entrance by the gentleman manning the cash register and takeout orders. My server was Hannah C. and she took great care of me and her other customers. She was pleasant, thoughtful, attentive, and had a great personality. She told me about their Saturday special (today only) on fried chicken wings. She was thoughtful in bringing one of those fly fans to my table because I sat in the corner where they seem to congregate. She was a joy (10/10)! I ordered the starter of Fried Green Tomatoes, served with ranch dressing (4/5). I finally got a chance to try it. It had a nice seasoned coating on them. The tomato itself was firm and slightly bitter but I liked them. I ordered the Snacks 2 piece Dark, which includes the chicken & white bread (4/5). The chicken was crunchy, juicy, and had a little heat. YUM! Come check them out. Support your local business.
Gus's was fantastic. We came on a Saturday at 6pm and had no issues with seating. We ordered the two piece dark chicken and the special that comes with four pieces. We both subbed beans for mac and cheese. My friend appeared the most jolly I'd ever seen him and thoroughly enjoyed the chicken. I really liked the mac and cheese, and I liked the chicken as well. The coleslaw was decent, and I often don't like coleslaw. The skin was tough and too much for me, but the food itself was great. The two piece was substantial for me, and the four piece seemed to be a little too much even for a big boy. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restroom floors were suspiciously very wet.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I feel like they could provide some moist towelettes because the chicken was very greasy, and we had to just pour water on the napkins. Downtown street parking was a struggle, but I found 2/3 of a spot close by that I decided could count as a spot.
If you like fried chicken, definitely check out Gus's! They sell bone in or boneless options and the platters come with coleslaw and beans. We got the platter with a wing, drum, thigh, and breast meat. The thigh and drum were super juicy and even the breast had some juiciness to it. It was crispy and not spicy in my opinion. The slaw was standard and beans weren't too special but they went well with the meal nonetheless. They have a lot of different local beers so we tried the Love Street Blonde, which was the perfect light ale, and the lemonade was also sweet and refreshing. It's open til late so would be a good option for a late night meal! The service was a bit slow because the servers were doing a lot, so keep that in mind. We had to try to flag down our server to get cashed out.
I heard a lot about Gus's and finally got to try it this weekend. I ordered the 2 Piece Dark Plate and substituted the beans and coleslaw for seasoned fries and mac & cheese. There was a small hiccup with the sides, but the staff was quick to fix it. The sides were good, and the chicken was juicy, flavorful, and didn't need any extra seasoning at all. I just wish the chicken pieces had been a little bigger! Overall, I had a good dining experience. Came in with some friends who love this place but I have to say, I don't understand why or why it's "world famous". The food was quite standard if not mediocre. I got a two piece dark chicken plate and was surprised to find the chicken pieces were quite small and left me unexpectedly hungry. The skin was super dried out and bland, so I had to put Louisiana hot sauce on it which did make it quite tasty and the inside was admittedly juicy. I tried the Cole slaw, greens, fried pickles, fried okra, and mac and cheese as sides and appetizers and I couldn't see anything special about them. If I had to pick, I'd choose the mac and cheese next time as it was quite rich. I bumped up a star because the server was very friendly and though they messed up a couple of our party's sides, they brought out the correct ones and at least only charged for one I recall. I finally stopped in here yesterday after living in Austin for 15 years! I had been to other Gus's in other states and it's always great. I had 2 tenders which were juicy and very fresh, with a good spicy kick to them. The mac and cheese was very thick and cheesy with a spice like cayenne on top. They can be a bit slow, but make sure you let them know if your order has not come up. They lost my ticket and had to resubmit it (hence the 1 less star). [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance is off a Midwest dive restaurant style with artifacts on the walls.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]
Service is great here. I've had the fried chicken here before and it's pretty good but this time decided to go with the boneless tenders. Sadly, they were super dry. But still, the flavor was good. The potato salad is creamy and a nice contrast when you're eating a heavily fried meal. Personally, I prefer a little bit more zing in my potato salad, but I still enjoyed it. The fried pickles are good, but I still think I prefer pluckers fried pickles more. Overall, an A-OK meal. Next time I'll be sure to just get the fried chicken and skip the tenders.
We came in for my go-to sober up meal (FRIES, duh!) after having drinks next door. They were nice enough to take our order even though their kitchen was closing up and no one else was there. My friend said other things in their menu are really good but we didn't get a chance to try. For sure next time we're in the area! Thanks guys for accommodating!
I'm a wimp! I couldn't handle the spice in so sad lol. The chicken was juicy, crispy and seasoned, they have the right hot sauce and I was dying off the spice. Why did my taste buds fail me. It was 5/5 though! The beans were sweet and good 4/5 The potato salad a little too sweet for my liking 3/5 The Mac and cheese- I'm not sure how I felt about it but I know I wasn't a fan 2/5 The fried green tomatoes were my fav! The right crunch and the tomatoes were just rightZ I would have preferred a thicker cut but I was still happy 5/5 Order first find a table while you wait. Pretty straight forward and make sure you look for the specials.

THIS PLACE IS LEGIT. I was a bit hesitant to visit Gus's because I've seen both positive and negative reviews, and didn't know who to trust. So I took some of the criticism (sides suck EXCEPT for collard greens and okra) into consideration for my order. I arrived at opening, and the restaurant already had a few customers. I got the 3-piece dark meat meal (15.25), and a refillable drink ($3 but you can keep the cup). My meal was ready in under 10 minutes, and could see that everything was freshly made. The hue on the chicken was beautiful --- it's not just a crust, that's some batter on Gus's chicken! The okra and the collards passed the test (DELICIOUS), and I was hoping for the chicken to be as "world famous" as I've heard. THE CHICKEN DID NOT DISAPPOINT. The crunch was undeniable, the slight heat from the marinade was present, and overall flavor was simply...pleasurable. My rule for chicken? Always get the dark meat. Any time I visit Austin. Aside from BBQ, Gus's will always be on my list. Who's gonna hate well executed fried crispy chicken and quality sides. How many places can you say that both main dish and sides are good? Also, for it to be reasonably priced? Ordered the 1/2 chicken plate. Comes with (1)breast, wing, thigh, and leg. Sides were beans and Cole slaw. Ordered a small order of Mac and cheese. Total was ~$26. Whenever my wife and I travel, we usually share plates so we have more room to try other things. 100% enough food for two people to hold you over for a solid meal with out making you take a nap. If you're hungry, that plate it self will absolutely keep you full for the 50% of the day. Staff has always been friendly. Service is generally quick but there can be a line depending upon when you arrive. Pro tip is to order to go if you have a nearby hotel or to door dash. We came here after walking around the city during the Texas game for a quick bite before headed back to our hotel. Food - 4 out of 5. The chicken was fried well, juicy, and had a little bite. The fried pickles and okra though felt a bit extra oily but had great flavor. Service - 5 out of 5. Our server was great. He was very quick to take our order and make sure we had everything we needed for our meal. Vibes - 4 out of 5. This is just a standard pop in restaurant with ample seating and some TVs to watch the games. read more

The food is extremely flavorful and juicy, the skin is nicely fried and seasoned, the side dishes provide a great balance to the fried chicken and the seeet tea is also a nice touch. Unplanned dinner here because it was one of the only spots still open in the area on a weeknight. Upon entering the restaurant, we were seated. The place was pretty busy and there were only a few tables that were empty. Our server came and gave us some time to order and warned us that their chicken was pretty spicy. My friend got the 3 pc dark meat combo and subbed for mac and cheese. I got the 3 pc tenders and subbed for fried okra and french fries. I got a soft drink (free refills!) to get a souvenir cup. Food came out in about 10ish minutes. Food was a 2/5, honestly don't know how their overall score is even above a 3. Both the dark meat and tenders were sooooooooo dry, and literally there was no flavor. Ironic since they said that their chicken is on the spicier side -- maybe for someone that's literally never had anything remotely close to spicy. My friend's dark meat chicken was barely lukewarm temperature, bordering cold. My tenders luckily were still warm. Based off the chicken, I would have given them a 1/5, but the sides were pretty solid. The fried okra was my favorite out of the 4 we had, I surprisingly enjoyed the baked beans more than I anticipated. Decoration inside was really cute and vibes were pretty nice. I was staying nearby for a work event and came here for dinner one evening. Its a pretty casual place but the food was delicious. Service was good too. I started with a can of House Wine. Its actually a pretty big can so you get quite a big serving. Then started with fried pickles with a side of ranch. These were delicious. Piping hot, crispy, breading stayed on the pickle spears. Good ranch dressing. Yum! Then for my entree, I was so full from the pickles, I just ordered 3 chicken strips from the a la carte menu and a small cole slaw. These were really good too. The chicken was nicely fried, good flavor, food sized pieces. The cole slaw was small cut and creamy like I like it. Overall a really nice meal. Very good food and service. read more

I traveled across the country to eat here (well, I was in Austin for separate reasons but made sure to add Gus's to my itinerary given all the rave reviews). Overrated. The fried chicken tasted like regular fried chicken. The outside was crispy, and the inside was moist enough as dark meat should be. There was no special flavor I could detect. It was a bit pricey considering the portion size. The chocolate chess pie was good. But again, nothing to justify the effort I made in trying to eat here. read more

Chicken was perfectly seasoned and as juicy as a tracksuit. For my order I got the special of the day with two drumsticks and chicken breast along with fries and macaroni and cheese. Chicken was well seasoned giving a very crunchy outside with a bit of spice. Mac and cheese was fantastic with its texture and consistency. Everything came out hot and fresh with great service provided by the staff. If you are looking to have some quality fried chicken that is guaranteed to hit the spot DEFINITELY check this place out. So the chicken is definitely worth getting. Tender crispy and right out of the grease. Service was decent and pretty fast. The chairs are a little uncomfortable and its pretty much picnic table cloths on the tables. Definitely a fried chicken cookout type of feel . The side were mid at best. Mac cheese was pretty basic one random slice of white bread. Bake beans were pretty good and sweet. Didn't wanna try any desserts after food was underwhelming. We were in Austin for the weekend and stopped by after visiting a Christmas bar, looking for some good food. It was my fiancé's first time here, though I've visited before, and this visit definitely didn't disappoint. We ordered the special--two thighs, two legs, and two sides for $16--and everything came out fresh, hot, and perfectly fried. The chicken was incredibly flavorful and impressed my fiancé, which is not an easy thing to do when it comes to food! The sides were good as well, but the chicken was definitely the star of the meal. We were seated quickly at the counter as soon as we walked in, which I appreciated. Overall: 3.4/5 [Ubereats Delivery] We ordered through Uber Eats, and delivery was quick. My husband chose à la carte so we could sample a bit of everything. The leg, wing, breast, and thigh were similarly priced, but if I had to rank them, I'd go with breast, thigh, leg, then wing. Unfortunately, we ate it late at night and both had stomachaches the next day. Leg ($4.05): Good balance of meat and skin. Breast ($4.90): The largest piece with the most meat. Thigh ($4.90): The juiciest. Wing ($4.05): The smallest piece, mostly skin. Honey ($0.90): Overpriced for regular honey, and it doesn't pair well with the chicken--skip it. Use ketchup instead. Fried Green Tomatoes ($10.10): Wow--super unique! Green tomatoes aren't as sweet as red ones, so there's no burst of flavor, but the batter really elevates and complements them. read more
Ambiance: I've gone to Gus' for lunch and dinner multiple times now, and I always feel comfortable here. It's a nice space in a nice location of Austin, and the vibe inside is cozy. Food: I always order the 3 piece dark (~$15) and then substitute the baked beans with mac n' cheese (+$0.50). It's definitely a tasty and filling meal -- you get two thigh pieces, a leg, slice of white bread, coleslaw, and then baked beans normally. The chicken is really juicy and flavorful -- a little of spice but easily manageable. I'm always happy with the coleslaw and mac n' cheese as it pairs nicely flavor-wise with the chicken. Service: Most recently, I had amazing service! Very sociable and friendly waiter who checked in on me and my friend multiple times during our meal. Gus' is a busy little place right on the corner of San Jacinto. You can't miss their "World Famous" sign but it's also super busy inside. I was able to find a spot quickly, but a wait formed shortly after that. Service is fast, but attentive and super friendly. The interior is small, but designed to get their chicken into your mouth as quick as possible. The chicken is awesome! I'm not typically one to seek out this exact type of place, but I'm glad I made the trip. It was perfectly crisp on the outside, juicy inside, and with just a little hint of spice. Nearly perfect fried chicken. The fries were perfectly cooked and had a little seasoning added which was the perfect pairing. The good: -The fried chicken doesn't disappoint. Great flavor and a bit a of heat in the seasoning. -Service was super attentive. The not so good: -The sides (mac & cheese, beans) were pretty lackluster. -A little pricey consider portion size. -Located DT so parking can be rough depending on the day/hour. Immediately upon entering we were seated at a table and our server took our order quickly. The menu here is pretty simple so it shouldn't be too difficult to decide on what to get here if it's also your first time here. We got the fried pickles and four piece chicken legs which come with two sides. Fried pickles came out hot and were great. One thing to note is that all of their chicken is "spicy" but the chicken does not have much of a kick to it. This place differs from other fried chicken places where the chicken isn't rolled in breadcrumbs before frying but the chicken still is very crispy and juicy. The chicken was a pretty standard fried chicken in my opinion. Overall, I consider this a good place to stop by for lunch maybe during the workweek as it is in downtown. Yelpers hit the nail on the head in their reviews of this restaurant, it is really good fried chicken. The decor is a combination of old tin signs that makes the place colorful and fun. Casual table service was fast and efficient. Restaurant and rest room were clean. I've been eating Gus's for over a decade. I love no matter the location the quality of the food is consistent. I just wanted a snack and got a two piece with a side for $8.39 (includes tax) and was remained how much I enjoy their chicken. read more
