We were walking around downtown Austin looking for something to eat when we walked by and saw the sign that said "World Famous," so obviously we had to give it a shot! We sat at the bar, and I believe his name was Darby. He was serving us and mentioned that he had been working there for 12 years. He suggested a few local brews and recommended the three-piece chicken combo with two sides. We went with the mac and cheese and fried green tomatoes, and everything was delicious! On our way to Dallas two Fridays ago, my cousin and I were craving Southern fried chicken. I was reminiscing about some memorable fried chicken I had in Tennessee, so we decided to stop in Austin and finally see what makes Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken so "world famous." We started with the fried green tomatoes. They didn't quite beat the unforgettable ones from The Front Porch Cafe at Dollywood, but they were still tasty and we happily finished them. I ordered the 2-piece dark meat while my cousin got the 2-piece white meat, both with baked beans, slaw, and white bread. The baked beans and slaw were both satisfyingly delicious. When my plate arrived with a thigh and two legs, I thought I had ordered wrong! Our wonderful server, Kamber, explained that the legs were especially small that day, so they have to serve two instead. The chicken was crispy, flavorful, and delicious, and I loved learning they use peanut oil. The fresh, natural quality definitely came through. And placing the white bread underneath the chicken? Brilliant--it soaks up the extra oil! Service was fast, friendly, and efficient even though it was a busy Friday lunch hour. Amber was great about answering our questions and regularly checked up on us. She even introduced us to their homemade Chess pie--a classic rich southern custard dessert pie--which we were too full to try this time, next time for sure. When I went to go pick up my order, the cashier was graciously enough to inform me that their website is powered through DoorDash so if you order online, all the prices are unfortunately higher than their menu...so unfortunate to hear :( As for the food, I ordered the 3 Piece White Meat Chicken Plate, which came with 2 chicken breasts and 1 wing (they surprisingly give the full wing), and it comes with toast, baked beans, and cole slaw be default. You can exchange the default sides for some other options for a little extra charge. It was wonderful to see how generous the portion sizes were, including the sides! The chicken was perfectly friend and breaded in my opinion while keeping the white meat tender -- it was still like that even after I put the leftovers in the air fryer the next day. So I took some of the criticism (sides suck EXCEPT for collard greens and okra) into consideration for my order. I arrived at opening, and the restaurant already had a few customers. I got the 3-piece dark meat meal (15.25), and a refillable drink ($3 but you can keep the cup). My meal was ready in under 10 minutes, and could see that everything was freshly made. The hue on the chicken was beautiful --- it's not just a crust, that's some batter on Gus's chicken! The okra and the collards passed the test (DELICIOUS), and I was hoping for the chicken to be as "world famous" as I've heard. THE CHICKEN DID NOT DISAPPOINT. The crunch was undeniable, the slight heat from the marinade was present, and overall flavor was simply...pleasurable. My rule for chicken? Always get the dark meat. If I could give this place 100000 stars, I would. We were seated immediately and ordered their 2 piece dark meat snack and plate with extra sides of baked beans, potato salad, and mac n cheese. How do they make their chicken that tender and juicy?? Also, why are the potato salad and mac n cheese the best I've ever had?? Our total came out to be ~$26, without tip. 5/5 Overall, great service, great food, and great experience! Parking is a bit hard since it's in downtown, but there is a parking garage across from the restaurant and it's only $5 for 0-2 hours, which I think is the best you can find. We also came on a Saturday around 2:30 pm. We got our food pretty quick so you can really just eat for 30 minutes and walk around downtown for a good 1.5 hours before coming back and leaving. The other day, I passed by Gus's World Famous Chicken and today I am dining in. Rustic looking interior with photos, signs, two tvs, and very crowded at lunch time. We both subbed beans for mac and cheese. My friend appeared the most jolly I'd ever seen him and thoroughly enjoyed the chicken. I really liked the mac and cheese, and I liked the chicken as well. The coleslaw was decent, and I often don't like coleslaw. The skin was tough and too much for me, but the food itself was great. The two piece was substantial for me, and the four piece seemed to be a little too much even for a big boy. The restroom floors were suspiciously very wet. We got the platter with a wing, drum, thigh, and breast meat. The thigh and drum were super juicy and even the breast had some juiciness to it. It was crispy and not spicy in my opinion. The slaw was standard and beans weren't too special but they went well with the meal nonetheless. They have a lot of different local beers so we tried the Love Street Blonde, which was the perfect light ale, and the lemonade was also sweet and refreshing. Came in with some friends who love this place but I have to say, I don't understand why or why it's "world famous". The food was quite standard if not mediocre. I got a two piece dark chicken plate and was surprised to find the chicken pieces were quite small and left me unexpectedly hungry. The skin was super dried out and bland, so I had to put Louisiana hot sauce on it which did make it quite tasty and the inside was admittedly juicy. I tried the Cole slaw, greens, fried pickles, fried okra, and mac and cheese as sides and appetizers and I couldn't see anything special about them. If I had to pick, I'd choose the mac and cheese next time as it was quite rich. I finally stopped in here yesterday after living in Austin for 15 years! I had been to other Gus's in other states and it's always great. I had 2 tenders which were juicy and very fresh, with a good spicy kick to them. The mac and cheese was very thick and cheesy with a spice like cayenne on top. The potato salad is creamy and a nice contrast when you're eating a heavily fried meal. Personally, I prefer a little bit more zing in my potato salad, but I still enjoyed it. Both the dark meat and tenders were sooooooooo dry, and literally there was no flavor.
