I've been coming to Smooth Sugaring for years, and it's hands down, the best sugaring studio in Seattle. Having gone to a handful of different studios now, you learn to appreciate service and details that you might not know about otherwise. I see Melissa, the owner, and she provides a great balance of being able to work quickly but is also thorough and careful. I'm usually in once every four weeks, and it's nice that the visit is about 20 minutes. I've been to studios where the same service would be an hour - which is way too long. You also don't want someone rushing either. The quality of the sugar they use is fantastic. I assumed everyone's sugar was the same until I went to a studio where the visits became painful enough that I considered not going anymore. Little did I know, the sugar matters! The studio has a modern/clean look and is located in a great spot in beautiful Madison Park with free street parking. ** For anyone worried about COVID, they have been on top of it. Well, folks, thanks to the lot of you fearing the presence of hair like it's AIDS, my junk is now looking as virginal as ever. I've always protested waxing va-jay-jays, particularly mine, because the lengths I am willing to go to get laid is not very far. Certainly not to the extent in which I have to experience an awkward precursor to childbirth. Nevertheless, days are getting shorter and the amount of personal time I can have is slowly declining, so I scheduled an appointment for punani maintenance. As the aesthetician talked to me through the process, she was quite friendly and pleasant for a full-time sadist. I opted for the Bruce Willis as opposed to what the pube crew call the "Landing Strip." I never quite understood the landing strip. It's the equivalent of carving out a sideburn but on your vagina. The sideways facsimile of a mustache on your pubic mound. "Okay, fuck it, let's do this," bracing myself while having that sensation in my gut where I can't differentiate whether it's nervousness or if I'm about to fart. She began to fervently rip out my pubes and I wailed the whole time. I can't help it, vocalizing my pain is a knee-jerk reaction. It was exactly as painful as I had thought it would be. I had no allergic reaction, everything was quick and abusive, and the studio was very clean. After it was all said and done, I've decided that I hate you all for making this the new normal. read more

OK, first of all, I can't believe I'm admitting I go to this place. Second, holy mother fracking crap - OUCH! Ouch, Ouch, Ouch. I will admit it, I am a baby about pain. My wife says I have the pain tolerance of a baby. My baby says that's an insult to him. Seriously - this was far better than my experience getting waxed that one time before I went on my honeymoon. It was quicker, less painful (but still hurt) and a lot less "sticky" afterward. I had a little trouble scheduling the appointment, but the place is easy to find (it's across the street from where the earliest reviews place it, but still in Madison Park), there's lots of street parking, and it's comfortable once you're in the studio. Not a lot of ambiance in the waiting room, but who cares. Jill has a great bedside manner, although she did try and keep me talking, which was really hard at some points when I just wanted to grab the sides of the table and wish the pain away. Did I mention I'm a big baby? Note that I don't get any "naughty bits" sugared, and I can't imagine how painful that would be if you're at all hirsute. Just the unwanted hair in the areas one might notice were they wearing a typical guys bathing suit, instead of the seattle full-body covering (vacations sometimes require this sort of bathing suit wearing). I'm not sure whether I'll make this a regular practice after my vacation is done (hurts, costs money, you don't stay hair free for all that long), but if you're just looking for a "special occasion" hair removal, or looking to switch from waxing to something less awful (how's that for praise), you could do worse than Jill @ Smooth Sugaring Studio read more

As a years-long Brazilian waxee, I heard about sugaring and was naturally curious. After doing some research online, I went to see Jill at Smooth Sugaring Studio. Although not the easiest to find at first - you have to go down a side street after 7PM, and then down some stairs - my experience made it totally worthwhile. Jill is very chatty and the whole process was extremely easy. Much less painful than waxing, way faster (in and out in half an hour), super duper easy clean up, and Jill was really precise and concerned that I liked the shape and final result. I have seen a lot of people say that sugaring is more expensive, but it was actually LESS expensive than some Brazilian waxes I have had. Plus she fit me in at the very first time and date I requested. Since then, I have had fewer in-grown hairs, less grow back, AND she got more of the hair off than waxers usually do (I saw literally not one stray). PLUS she didn't make me do the "wave your ass in the air like you just don't care" position - I got to lay on my side with a bent leg. I would highly recommend that anyone who gets waxed regularly at least give sugaring a try. I'm definitely sold. read more

I came here to get groomed for my birthday bash. It was my first time getting sugared, but Jill was wonderful and really put me at ease. Although it was painful, I found it to be more tolerable than just waxing. Certain areas are much less painful and other areas are just as painful as waxing. Face it, ripping hair out of your skin is gonna hurt. But overall, waxing hurts more. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd put sugaring at a 6 or 7 and waxing at 8 or 9, if that gives you any perspective. It takes a little longer than waxing, but it's worth it. I probably won't do this on a regular basis because of the ouch factor, but it's great for special occasions. read more

I tried a Brazilian wax once and it hurt so much, I almost cried. The lady wasn't even able to finish. That being said, while I can't handle waxing, I can and LOVE sugaring. Is it weird that I almost look forward to my appointments now? Sugaring to me is superior in just about every way-- it's faster (I come in every 4 weeks and my appointments never last more than 12-15 minutes), WAY less painful (even for crybabies like me) and the results last longer. Every girl (and guy?) should try it! I love Jill too, she is so sweet and friendly. Never makes me feel uncomfortable or awkward. She is really good at what she does and genuinely cares. TMI alert: When I had an issue with ingrowns, she went above and beyond to help me correct this. Although I HATE to do it, I'm rating Smooth a 4/5 because sometimes after a session, I notice areas that seem to have been.....errr, missed, meaning I have to fix it myself at home. This is a great way to remove hair! After trying to get a next day appointment at several places, Jill at Sweet Sugaring Studio was able to appease my need for instant gratification for the first time getting "sugared." I was used to getting brazilians by waxing, and I definitely have to say that sugaring is far less painful. My favorite part about Jill's hair removal style is that she gets so damn excited when she sees a pile of your no longer attached hairs in her glove complete with hair follicle still in tact. That makes me giggle and know that she takes pride in her work. It is a speck pricey for me, but certainly worth the personality. I return to her on a somewhat regular basis. I have never been so offended and felt so bad about myself in my entire life. I laid down on the bed and asked her to do my brows, lip and chin. She proceeded to try and do my cheeks. I asked her not to do my cheeks because the hair is so fine there that you can't really see it. Then she asked if i ever thought about doing my nose. My Nose! Then when she was doing my brows she started going really high. Like my forehead high. I have a widow's peak. It's supposed to be there! In all my experience of getting my facial hair removed I have never felt so ugly. I have been getting waxed since I was 12 years old. Not too long ago I started getting my lip and chin done as well. I am not new to facial hair, or waxing/sugaring services. Don't get me wrong. I have been getting sugared for about 8 months now and I love it. I recommend sugaring over waxing and love the results. My hair used to break off and my skin would turn red with waxing, but not with sugaring, and I really feel the hair coming out, instead of my skin being ripped off. read more

I'm over waxing after having my first sugaring experience with Malia. I was hoping to get back into a waxing regimen, but heard about sugaring as a less painful alternative that doesn't require as long of grow out. The price was comparable so I went for it. The studio itself is very clean and professional, Malia asked if it was my first time and stepped me through everything she was doing and what sugaring was all about. Ever get a wax and immediate get overheated and sweaty from the stress/pain of it? Well, small touches like a fan blowing cool air directly on me or great music (Radiohead) made me all the more comfortable. Overall I found it to be less painful than waxing, just as effective and Malia only charged me for a maintenance sugaring ($60 as opposed to $75). Totally recommend! read more

I can't say enough awesome things about Smooth Sugaring. I've seen Jill since 2008 and recently started seeing her associate, Thomasin. They are both very warm and friendly and provide excellent customer service. I was really nervous for my first appointment because up until then, I had only ever used razors. I was not pleased with my experience at Smooth Sugaring Studio this Saturday. Brooke was the technician who performed the service (Brazilian, upper lip), and that itself was fine (no glaring hygiene issues), but the details were lacking. First, there was no offer of water, and the cups (Dixie size) on the water cooler were much too small. Really, if the new client survey is a full page, provide cups at least large enough to last half the questions. My main issue, however, is with the description of the services on the website. A maintenance Brazilian, which I had booked with the receptionist, is not based on the reported time of having hair removed, but rather on the last time the hair was removed at that particular studio. The description on the website, as of 9/29/2012, reads only "removal of all hair within the bikini area within [time period] or less after original brazilian," with no mention of the requirement that original treatment be performed at this studio. If this had been explicitly stated on the website, or explained to me when I was making the appointment [see below -- I could have been convinced that I was getting an excellent deal], I would have had the correct expectation at time of payment. But as always, difference in expectation and reality results in shock and unpleasant surprise. The difference, monetarily, is about $3, as there was a 10% discount for first-time clients, and 6 oz. of water, but the difference in my perception of the studio is such that I don't think I will be returning. Finally, a unrelated ort of personal experience: sugaring and waxing were equally (not) painful for me. Try sugaring, but don't expect it to necessarily be better. read more

Finding a good womanscaper is hard, an excellent one nearly impossible. I went to see Jill today and omg, I am so happy I've already scheduled my next appointment. Prices were reasonable - her attention to detail for my Brazilian was amazing - and the atmosphere at the Studio is very nice. The towels and pillows on the bed are clean and soft, the paint colors are soothing yet bright, and Jill's the real star. She has a great bedside manner, and is patient with questions, and is a total foodie so the conversation made everything go faster. The entry is a little awkward, with the reception desk after the treatment room, but if that's my only negative...well, sheeeeiiiitttttt. I was anxious to try sugaring after hearing mixed reviews...SO glad that I gave it a try! Smooth was amazing. I called and left a message to schedule an appt and didn't receive a call back so I sent an email. They responded right away and didn't have any appts available, so they arranged to have an esthetician stay late to accommodate me after their usual closing time. The day of, they emailed me and let me know that the 7:30 appt had cancelled, and I could come in earlier if I would like, but they would still be able to have the appt at 8pm if I needed to. Definitely nice to have such wonderful customer service! My appt was with Thomasin - and she was amazing! She explained the difference between sugaring and waxing and let me know what to expect. She was very sweet and we chatted through the whole appt. The sugaring experience was much better than I expected! I usually leave a wax feeling tender and very red from the hot wax burning and ripping off my skin - the sugaring left me feeling like nothing even happened! She was very detailed and I appreciated the aftercare tips. I am so happy that I found Smooth, sugaring, and Thomasin! read more

I have been going to Jill since 2008 and I love her! Before finding her I had been around the waxing block (as a result too many people have seen alllll of my secrets..). Personality-wise Jill has it all: good recommendations on music and food, charming self deprecating humor, and a not-over-the-top bubbliness that I find quite endearing. A++ for attitude! Unlike another reviewer (an anomalous review for sure) I have never felt humiliated by her in any way. She is body positive and has never mentioned anything remotely uncomfortable to me. As for sugaring: I find it less painful than regular waxing (i have sensitive, paper-thin skin and am prone to ingrown hair) and my skin recovers a lot more quickly when I sugar vs. wax. I still hurts though, so pop an Advil before you go to take the edge off. I get a LOT less ingrown hairs since I switched to sugaring, which makes me look better and is a way more comfortable. Parking is free and readily available (At least after 3pm, I've never been before that). The studio is cute, unique, and clean. Jill is my favorite! Overall I am always happy with smooth sugaring studio! read more

Jill, Jen and Thomasin are all great sugarists! I only really come here for an underarm sugar every 2-3 weeks, but they are truly the best. They are meticulous at making sure they do a great job. They are quick and efficient and always get me in and out in 15 minutes. I love their little space tucked away in madison park (2 min walk from me is an added plus). Their studio is bright, but relaxing. Sugaring is definitely the way to go. It is much less painful then waxing and plucking And much much better than shaving. read more

Just a note, as I think it's good to have all the info. I have waxed for many years. Waxing is not fun, but I have never had a terrible time with the pain. That said, I was excited to give sugaring a try. I agree with all comments related to Jill and the studio. She is great, the space is very clean and professional. My personal experience though, is that sugaring is WAY more painful than wax. The sugar is about the consistency of play dough. As such it is applied against the natural growth of the hair. You have to mix the hair into it for the hair to catch and then come out when you pull. Did you ever try the old epilady devices? It's like that. So the pulling out part is about the same as wax, but the mixing the hair with the sugar is killer. I couldn't take it. :-( I'm going back to wax. read more

I did not have such a great experience. First I should say that I have been waxed and sugared at all the top places in Seattle. When I saw Jill's reviews I was excited, intrigued and thought it might be a place I could get my boyfriend to go to as well. I emailed Jill and set up my appointment I arrived at the salon on the scheduled time only to find out that Jill did not have me on her calender even though I had spoken with her directly. We talked and I made another appointment and returned on another day. I have to say that I really liked the privacy of her space and Jill was friendly too BUT the day after my treatment my skin broke out in white bumps!! This has never happened before! It took three days to go away, was extremely uncomfortable and really unattractive! I emailed Jill and she said that they would probably go away but didn't really give me any information that might help. When my boyfriend arrived for his appointment. Jill's door was closed. He was told that she was busy with an appointment but would more than likely be out shortly and so he waited and he waited and 35 minutes after his scheduled appointment without any word from Jill he finally decided to leave. He never received a call or an explanation. This was not a very good experience. I love sugaring but unfortunately cannot recommend Jill. read more

Skipping the known superiority of Sugaring to all other hair removal techniques (well documented in other reviews) I will keep my comments to the quality of this Esthetician. Jill loves her work; she is enthusiastic about Sugaring and giving you the cleanest, most precise, thorough hair removal. She is detail oriented, a perfectionist, will not hurry your job but spends as much time as it takes. She makes sure that she is not just removing the hair but the follicle too. That adds weeks to your Brazilian. I've brought her Playboy photos of hair patterns I wanted to try and Jill is really happy to copy it. She'll even dye your "ahhemm" fun colors like PINK. Jill keeps the conversation flowing so the appointment goes quickly and with dignity intact. She is constantly improving her business, recently with new scheduling program and email appointment reminders. Jill has also been known to come into the studio off-hours to get a client ready for prime-time. If pain is not your friend, take some Tylenol or your leftover pain pills prior to the appointment. After a few treatments, it gets A LOT less painful (it's the trick of getting that pesky follicle out, you see). read more

I've only been here once but am booking another appointment ASAP! I love that Jill explains everything that she's doing and why, and tells you when to inhale and exhale to minimize the pain. Talking with her is very pleasant, as she seems genuinely interested in your life, and offers up her own stories too. Sure, it still hurts quite a bit, but there really isn't a way to make ripping hair out of your body enjoyable. The new location up in Wallingford is super cute, clean, and bright; you'll get sent home with a sample of Whish Flawless Ingrown Hair Serum to keep everything in good shape! Jill was my first-ever sugaring experience and I am thankful. Both she and sugaring are great. However, I now go to Sugar Sugar in Ballard. Like another reviewer, I had scheduling troubles - showed up to my second-ever appointment to find the lights off and everything locked up and no one answering the door or phone. Jill told me later that she had simply forgotten my appointment. I get it; I've done it. But I would have let it go more quickly if she had at least offered to compensate me in some fashion for my wasted time and frustration. I was still planning to give her a second chance, but then Sugar Sugar came along. Sugar Sugar managed to squeeze me into their schedule before my impending visit to the boyfriend. In the year since then, they've never messed with my schedule, and have always done right by my naughty bits.They also have better prices for "touch ups" so I'm sticking with them. read more

Jill was recommended to me by my friend Rachel years ago. She told me about sugaring, and I was interested. I first started seeing Jill before she had her own studio, and I had never even experienced waxing before. Needless to say it was literally an eye opening experience. I loved Jill though. Somehow lying half naked on her table while she ripped your hair out from your Southern regions was not awkward. That is a testament to how great Jill is. I followed her to her new studio, and she is ever bit as great. I even trusted her to my eyebrows, and they were the best ever. I had tried wax before and with my sensitive skin, it would just burn or give me hives. I don't have the same reaction with sugaring. Some health problems have kept me away for awhile, but Jill still remembered who I was, the details of my life and was as sweet as ever.
