(I usually get 3 meals from the Too Good to Go app, which allows vendors to sell unsold food at a discount. It is a real bargain at $10 for 3 Snap Kitchen meals.) This time I got the Mediterranean Chicken Bowl with Whipped Feta, Ground Bison Blend, Chicken Carnitas, and Hill Country Chicken Salad. The Mediterranean Chicken Bowl with Whipped Feta was very tasty and nutritious. The Greek chicken is paired with white basmati rice, seasoned kale, a house-made pepperoncini salad, and tahini feta sauce The whipped feta dressing made the dish very flavorful. I used the Ground Bison Blend and Chicken Carnitas in my homemade tacos. They were yummy. The Hill Country Chicken Salad consisted of a mix of tender chicken breast, cranberries, pecans, celery, and house-made olive oil mayo, packing in tons of flavor, texture, and protein. We have been having snap kitchen on and off for dinner for the past year or so, and very much enjoy it. It's super convenient to just throw one of their meals in the microwave for lunch or dinner. Most of their food is also on myfitnesspal, so tracking calories is easy to do. I believe their lids are recyclable as well, and the lemon roasted salmon and bison burger entrees are really tasty. I've tried snap kitchen now through Too Good to Go multiple times and have yet to try something I didn't like. Their meals come pre-portioned and cooked. All you have to do in warm it up in the microwave, which usually take about 1.5 minutes per meal. You can also get sides, breakfast, even gluten and dairy free bread from them. I've had their baked ziti, lemon salmon, teriyaki chicken, meatballs, bread, etc and it's all been good. I tried Snap Kitchen for the first time this week. The concept is similar to many other healthy refrigerated meal-to-go services. Those can be really handy when circumstances dictate. Unfortunately, their concept hasn't snapped to for me yet. One of the things I found intriguing was that many of the lunch/dinner items are offered in 2-3 portion sizes. That would be great, but most are only available in one size. What the what? On the first visit, I left with a General Tso's entrée and two sides: garlic roasted cauliflower and mashed sweet potatoes. I found the chicken in the General Tso's dry and off-flavor. The inclusion of green beans and Swiss chard was just plain weird. There was little to no sauce. The garlic roasted cauliflower was tasteless and had very little garlic character. The mashed sweet potatoes were spot-on, however. Those sweet potatoes were so well-received that I went back a couple of nights later for more and to try some other items. They were out of the sweet potatoes, but I did buy side orders of crunchy coconut shrimp and grilled steak. I was told a truck was due in from Fort Worth early the next morning that might restock the item. I stopped by when they opened at 7a. The order hadn't been fully reconciled yet, but they were able to determine from the manifest that sweet potatoes weren't on the shipment. I asked if there would be some tomorrow. They couldn't say, but did suggest that ordering online might be a solution. But I was told that ordering online would simply reserve the item for me the next time it came in. It was also suggested I might drive to Westlake to see if they had some, but never offered to call and check. Therein lies the rub with the Snap Kitchen model. You can't base meals around their gypsy-random delivery schedule. I was told they were working on it, but that does me no good today. And it's not as though Snap hasn't been around long enough to figure this part out for themselves. Don't open new stores if you don't have your basic business model executing flawlessly. The food items are nowhere near as predictable or flavorful as their namesakes or even flash frozen entrees at the grocery. All-in-all, it makes me think that Snap Kitchen is great for those with a wide variety in diet who are willing to take what they have du jour. In terms of predictable dietary planning, they're far more a problem than they are a solution. Top that off with lackadaisical customer service and prices that make Whole Foods look cheap in comparison, and I'm pretty close to done as a customer. read more

EX-PAYING CUSTOMER: My boyfriend and I got 2 meals that looked nothing similar to the pictures we had seen on the menu. I'm not sure why they would advertise a larger meal than they are selling. I called and spoke with the manager about my concerns and she told me I was wrong. I asked for a refund, because I was unsatisfied with my purchase and she said this was "not possible". The food is delicious and really helps keep me on track during busy weeks. I have been on a meal plan for a couple weeks and have food delivered for the week on Sundays. Today there was a snag with my delivery, the driver dropped my food somewhere else and refused to help correct the situation. Ugh. An employee working here is hawking her own snack bar line ("Hey, do you like the Cookie Dough?") as if Snap doesn't have enough great snacks! But you have to pay HER, directly, in cash, and I didn't have cash. An entire complex situation arose, just annoying. I was trying to pay her using the Cash app, but she didn't have that app, she wanted Venmo. But I couldn't sign into my Venmo account, and I had already tried to send her the money through the Cash app. You would think by then, she would just hand me the bar, for good will and advertising, but nope! I was willing to walk away from my five dollars, but she wasn't willing to let me walk away with the bar, LOL! Not that I asked, but somehow she made ME feel skeevy, like I was the dubious one. I was in a time crunch as it is, and actually just trying to do her a favor, to try her bar. I guess I forgot what it's like to be 20 and broke. Then again, maybe I should start carrying more cash! This little ordeal wasn't enough to prevent me from buying actual Snap foods, but maybe was enough for me to avoid this location. She was pretty unprofessional. If there's one thing Snap does as well as their food, it's usually their employees. I get it that she's trying to enter the gig economy, I salute her entrepreneurial impulses, and the bar looked tasty. I've been wanting to check this place out since my fit foods shut down. Although the meal plan is super pricy, the meals are right around what I think is right for opting for hassle free meals that are around 500 calories or less (depending on what you're looking for). I tried the turkey chili and the chicken pad thai and also tried the energy juice. The total came to $20 (expensive juice). To my surprise I was given a $10 off coupon at the checkout so only $10! They know how to get you.... anyway. I was delighted in the fact that both meals made me feel full for a while! I wasn't still starving afterwards like most 350 calorie meals. The service was also great, girls were really friendly when I walked in. The reason for lack of star is because of the limited options. It felt like the shelves were pretty empty. I'd only been to one Snap Kitchen a couple years back and remembered a good (expensive) coconut shrimp meal I'd gotten. Now that we have one close by, I decided to try their 3-meal / 3-day "balanced" 1200 calorie plan to give myself some new-mom training wheels. My review is more of Snap Kitchen in general, as I was served quickly and efficiently at this location. They seem on top of it. I'm big on fresh food but not a lot of time to grocery shop and cook, so I mostly relied on what family helped us prepare. With some final baby weight to shed, I wanted a quick way to learn what a 1200 calorie day might feel and look like, without having to sit around and track everything I put in my mouth - I am NOT a diet person. The tag line 'everything in moderation' spoke to me, so I bit the bullet and paid the $88 ($10 off first online order coupon, FYI). I have used these on work days and have now tried a variety of meals and snacks. First, I always eat breakfast, but do not care for heavy/savory meals really early in the day. I'd often eat a small bowl of cereal and have a small cup of coffee. I know cereals can be pretty empty calories, but it was an adjustment trying to eat a Snap Kitchen breakfast. First of all, I cook with onion, but for flavor. I did not care to spend 7am picking out large chunks of slimy onion from my mystery hash (spinach and goat cheese scramble, but 'liquid egg' is hardly recognizable among the other ingredients). Also, for half of my first day I struggled with weird stomach upset which is quite rare for me. Not sure what that was about. The ab&j oatmeal bowl? Oh my gosh. I couldn't finish it. I don't think I've ever eaten that much almond butter in my life. After starting to feel queasy, I spooned some of the butter and jam into the trash and finished the rest of the steel cut oats. Finally, the sausage platter seemed really overly processed. It was watery, spongy and salty. I'm not that into sausage, but when I eat it I need it to not resemble hot dog foam. I 'donated' the second patty. Snacks. Turkey meat stick is about as exciting as it sounds. Ginger greens juice is surprisingly tasty, one of my favorite flavor combinations, and at $6 each it's a smart snack choice for a set price meal plan. Fruit was a dumb pick in that same vein. Cut your own and pick a side you wouldn't easily have access to. Otherwise you end up with mostly large chunks of melon. I split mine in half and added the calorie equivalent in plain Bulgarian yogurt for something more interesting. Roasted Brussels sprouts: dang. just realized I don't think I saw those.. maybe they got skipped. Devily eggs: straight up gross. To say they're filled with 'hummus' per an online review I saw is not accurate. It's chickpea mash and it did not please the palate. Also I should have at least tried it the very first day because the egg white turned to rubber. I started to get mad that the marketing of these dishes made them sound close to a known dish, while falling short of the known dish in trying to adhere to a caloric limit. Which brings me to lunches. With the motto 'everything in moderation', I would really love a little bit of Pad in my Pad Thai. I didn't sign up for gluten free, so having a sort of Thai-flavored shredded sweet potato / onion soupy mixture with some white-clear chunks of cabbage, complete with exactly 2 shrimp, mad me kind of sad. I'm thinking the moral of my story is maybe I CAN make time for groceries so I can enjoy my own mediocre cooking. Black bean 'sliders' (balled up mashed black bean mostly) was actually not bad. Forgot the sauce even. Dinners: The shredded 'buffalo' chicken was actually pretty good with a bit of the buffalo sauce and about half the blue cheese sauce. My husband liked the tex mex bowl as well, that seemed pretty good, but he did mention a lot of onion. All in all I am trying one more week of this (with a bit more scrutiny placed in analyzing each meal before choosing), and then I'm going to figure out a way to meal prep myself so I don't need to rely on this. Snacks are really easy for me, meals will be the real work, and finally, I'll be glad to reuse my own glassware, because that was a ton of plastic containers. A couple of quick disclaimers about my personal hangups: I don't much care for reheated leftovers, so via microwave they probably lost a bit of initial integrity. Also don't care for frozen meals, and certain ingredient substitutions / additions reminded me of those. And of course, I like a little bit of strategically placed and cooked onion. Turns me off when it dominates. Hope this helps! I think this place can be great for someone trying to be health conscious, without access to a home-cooked meal, willing to pay for the convenience and the trendiness of catering to fad diets like Whole 30 and Keto. 2 stars always feels harsh to me, but 'Meh' seemed more accurate than 'A-OK'. read more
