I chose to visit Tony's Hot Dogs in Birmingham. I dined in for lunch to get the full experience…read more Tony's is a small, no frills local restaurant that feels very rooted in Birmingham's history. The atmosphere is casual and nostalgic, with regular customers coming in and staff who clearly know many of them by name. It has that classic American hot dog stand feel that reflects a long standing Southern food culture. I ordered a classic hot dog with chili and mustard, fries, and a drink. The food was simple, affordable, and filling. From a public health perspective, this type of restaurant represents traditional comfort food that is high in sodium and processed meats, which we know can contribute to chronic disease when eaten frequently. However, it also plays an important role in community identity and accessibility. The prices are reasonable, making it an option for people looking for a quick, inexpensive meal. Overall, Tony's reflects how cuisine culture is not just about nutrition, but also about tradition, affordability, and local history. It was a solid experience and a good example of how food connects people in a community.

Just a tiny, iconic hole in the wall that exists for one reason: to serve hot dogs that mean business. When you walk in, you already know you're not here for the décor. You're here because you're craving a hot dog and you want it done right. I ordered the Chicago dog, which showed up looking like it had zero intention of fitting politely inside its bun. This thing was juicy, oversized, and required a concerning amount of napkins. The pickles were crisp, the peppers had the right bite, the mustard was exactly what it should be. Everything hit. The only thing missing was that neon green relish that looks radioactive but somehow makes a Chicago dog official. I kind of missed it. A little. Then I got adventurous. Mistake number one. I ordered the Beef Sandwich, what I can only describe as a sloppy joe with a pickle on top. It sounded bold. It tasted... fine. Not terrible. Not memorable. Just sort of there. It's like I betrayed the hot dog gods and they let me know. My colleague went with the burger, which Tony's is apparently campaigning as "best of" material with the local news crowd. He said it was decent and a great value. High praise in burger language. Now the onion rings? Absolute perfection. Crispy, golden, and cooked exactly the way onion rings should be cooked. No notes. If I had stuck strictly to the hot dogs, this would've been an easy five-star situation. But I strayed. That's on me. Four stars. Next time, I'm staying loyal to the dogs.

Fresh, handmade and not overly greasy. The sauce was not too overwhelming and paired well. This was easy to digest and honestly I could have sat there and ate two. I really wish they had fries to pair with it. Chips only. For 3 sandwiches and 2 small drinks, our total was $25.08 with $1 tip. Fast service! My burger was made before I paid with the person at the counter as she was trying to get a togo order together. Parking is overall fairly easy. This is a good solid choice for lunch/ dinner. Restaurant was clean and spacious. The layout of the tables were interesting but overall I liked the style.

We then looked for another place and finally found this place. Sometimes things just work out for what's best. The smell of good burgers were smelt before we opened the door. The smell matched the flavor and taste of each bite. My daughter and I both ordered the cheese but I ordered the slaw dog as well for later. We added the sweet tea and everything was pleasing to the tastebuds. The cooks and checkout clerks were friendly held welcoming conversations. When over this way I plan on returning. Again, everything was really good.

So they can't be held to the standard that they would in person. But that is the reason I bumped up the review. I had my kids by myself while my wife was out at dinner with friends. My typically MO is to order something and I had never tried them before. I have heard good things. But I decided to not go with the frozen custard traveling so far. Overall, the burgers were pretty good. But as we learned during the pandemic, some foods don't deliver well. I should have thrown the fries in the air fryer for a minute. But these are the reasons I rounded up in my experience. The burger was decent. Best I've had? Far from it. But a good smash burger that is known around the country is always good. As I mentioned the fries get a pass for being boxed up. Overall, I would love to try them in person next time I am out that way. In the meantime, they get a solid 4 stars from me.

Yes they were open however we were the only customers in the entire restaurant. The register person was not cordial at all. Looking at the menu we ordered burgers and fries and wanted to pay for our custard ice cream at the same time. We were told that there was no custard available and that they were going to make some in awhile... The burgers were just ok and the fries were tasteless ketchup did improve but not much. We used to enjoy Fredd'y's from time to time especially the custard but it's been over 2 years since we were there. We did manage to get some custard just before leaving and it was very delicious . When we left only 1 family was there. Maybe it was an off night. The Veterans discount is all but gone . Instead they point you to the seniors selection now. It's on the menu in the attached photo. We will continue to go to Craft Burger for an occasional burger and fries fix.
