I ended up here one Friday night after getting separated from my group after a long day of drinking at Wrigley and those surrounding bars. Snickers was within a few blocks of our hotel and didn't require that I be dressed in a button-up shirt. A buddy and I were able to find two seats at the end of the bar and ordered a few beers. The had 4 bartenders working, all were very good looking women wear tight dresses and spoke with what I'd call Eastern European accents. They served as bartenders and waitresses as the place has a few tables as well. They were all fast, friendly and attentive. I can't describe how their drinks are made as this seemed like the type of place to simply grab a beer. There were several TV's in the bar so I was able to watch the Tulane football game.(yes they were playing on a Friday night and I'm from New Orleans so I was probably the only one watching it.) The hardest working man in the place was the cook. He was moving his ass off. The fryer, meat rotisserie for gyros, and the prep station were right in front of us. This man cooked all the food, asked the customers what they thought, restocked the beer, took out the trash, cleaned and I'm sure several other things that I forgot. I was exhausted from watching him. The atmosphere is definitely more bar than grill. The music playing is a huge mix of everything from Despacito to Frank Sinatra to Oasis to ABBA. It's a cool, chill neighborhood bar in the heart of downtown that's worth a stop if you want a beer and a gyro. read more

None of the customers or staff are wearing masks except for myself and my two friends. We stumbled in for the first time just trying to grab a quick bite. My biggest concern is that we are not out of the woods with the pandemic, but this guy who appears to be the owner/cook/manager (honestly not sure which), is not wearing gloves while cooking the food. He is eating food behind the counter, with his bare hands, and then touching things without washing or sanitizing his hands first. He Said: I mean this in the very nicest way possible: if you want a dive bar this is your spot. I don't mean it's dirty, I don't mean it's seedy. I mean it's a stripped-down, no frills place to get a drink and watch the goings-on. We were in town for business/fun and can easily see how this would be our regular if we were locals. Friendly staff, decent enough tap selection, cool 80s music in the rotation (at least on our two visits), and regulars plus random tourists. She Said: I don't have much to add to what He has to say. We were stopping at Snickers on our way "home" from somewhere both times, so we never ended up eating the food; therefore, we can't comment on that aspect of things. One thing He didn't mention is that they have tons of TVs, so whatever event you're hoping to watch is sure to be showing. I suspect the friendly staff will change the channel for you if you ask, too. We look forward to returning whenever we're in town, that's for sure. Potty Points: I visited a lot of bathrooms while in Chicago, so I honestly don't recall the specifics of this one. Holy crap. I was just re-reading the review I wrote for this dive a decade ago.. I must have been f*cking smashed. Note; Snickers was a dive for a decade plus. A remodel occurred some years ago and now they've joined the surplus of Chicago bar and grills. When looking at reviews look at the date, this will help show the progression. What I should have iterated was what Chicagoans have known about Snickers. A dive bar in the heart of a lively area. One filled with tourists and Chicagoans alike. The major draw being hot European bartenders that tend bar but don't quite "get" what bartending in America or Chicago is. (From that old review) It's safe to assume every American bartender would know how to make a car bomb or bomb shot. Since we're all pc and shit now, we're supposed to say car bomb not "ICB." (Frankly though, who came up with the terminology. Thinking about when the Bailey's shot hits the Guiness, the mixture curdles.. hardly bomblike.) For awhile this was a fun bar to hit when in the city. Not a destination bar, more like a place you hit while hopping around. There was always a time when Euro dance hits played on the juke and wide-eyed bar gazers were stuck on the hips of the bartenders. Those were some nights.. Today, it's fully remodeled with additional seating, a wider selection of spirits and a decent cooking area. Reminds me of Billy Goat Tavern as a bar. Full service bar and grill, the grill is managed by the cutest much older man who looks scary at first but once you start talking with him he's a charmer! Stopped in here for a quick lunch and a beverage. Checked the reviews while waiting here....someone described it as "The Mother of all Dive Bars", which made me laugh. Wasn't terribly busy...they had a decent draft beer selection considering...ordered a Modelo, and since we were sitting in front of the Gyro cooker, decided we'd split a gyro, and we were not disappointed. The gyros were better than the mediocre generic gyros you find just about everywhere these days...or maybe we were just hungry. They cooked them up just right anyway. And the fries, were very, very good. I'd recommend this place for a gyro and a beer. Can't speak to other dishes, but service was good, and the food as well. They may deserve more than 3 stars, but, hey, we were in there less than an hour. Your mileage may vary. read more

The place was great and has an excellent location. The prices here are not bad at all. They have pitchers of beer which is always good value for the money. The staff was friendly and the music selection was excellent - a great blend of popular songs through time. There was a corporate happy hour going on while we were there but that didn't get in our way. One tip that I'd give is don't bother with the cocktails. The bartender made me repeat my order three times, took forever to make them, told me incorrectly which cocktail is which and to top it off, there was barely any booze in them. But unfortunately, they are not enforcing the mask mandate so it was closed by the city on Labor Day weekend. Deservedly so. This is a small place with no air circulation. And yet another dive bar to add to my list!! Been by this place a million times and actually stopped in last night. So, what's good about this place? Friendly patrons, cheap beer, serves food until 1:30a.m. and surprisingly- fairly clean bathrooms! The bad? Aloof bartenders, lots of smoke, the noise level, and menus that were so dirty that I wondered if they had ever been replaced. Go with low expectations and they may be able to meet them. For my money- if I am in that neighborhood looking for a dive bar- I would go to Rossi's which is about a block south. While I am not sure why is is called "Snickers" - it may have something to do with people walking by "snickering" that there are actually people in this place! What a dive!!! read more

Walked in and noticed the 5 for $25 bucket of miller lites posted on the wall, asked the bartender if that was something they still offered and she said yes. Ordered that but was served them 1 at a time, not a huge deal until I got my tab and was charged $6 per beer. Also have a sign outside that reads "$3 shot" so we ordered 2 cherry bombs, got the bill and they were $13 a piece! I understand not every shot would be $3 but over 4 times that seems excessive. Brought up the price differences to the bartender and she said "ok I guess I owe you $5" and then looked and me rudely and didn't change the bill at all. We paid and walked out. Snicker's is located on the coveted corner of Illinois and State Streets with a corner entrance and windows on both sides of which the State St. side opens up completely. You're immediately drawn in by the noise and the place is always, always packed! Because it's packed, and not very large, it's impossible not to meet someone new. I'm not saying it's a pick-up joint, but I'm not saying it's not either!). I've met all sorts of people there. You won't have the finest drink ever created there, nor will you have culinary orgasms from tasting their food. You shouldn't. It's a basic place with basic drinks, and basic food (burgers, gyros...that sort of thing) at absolutely fantastic prices. It's an experience that's fun and affordable. It's the perfect, "go-to" place. If you don't have a good time here, then see if you can have your lobotomy reversed. It doesn't get any more Chicago than this. read more
