This is the definition of "dive bar"! As you know, I rarely give out 5 stars. This is a 5 Star Rating for the overall experience. This is a fun place for the after-work crowd or the tourist. Snicker's is located on the coveted corner of Illinois and State Streets with a corner entrance and windows on both sides of which the State St. side opens up completely. You're immediately drawn in by the noise and the place is always, always packed! Because it's packed, and not very large, it's impossible not to meet someone new. I'm not saying it's a pick-up joint, but I'm not saying it's not either!). I've met all sorts of people there. You won't have the finest drink ever created there, nor will you have culinary orgasms from tasting their food. You shouldn't. It's a basic place with basic drinks, and basic food (burgers, gyros...that sort of thing) at absolutely fantastic prices. It's an experience that's fun and affordable. It's the perfect, "go-to" place. If you don't have a good time here, then see if you can have your lobotomy reversed. It doesn't get any more Chicago than this. read more

If only I were a local! This is my kind of place! We've walked by this place numerous times on weekend trips and never have gone it. Well, this was the trip where we finally made it in. It's small and kind of dark, warm and kind of mysterious. There were 2 very nice female bartenders working that early evening. People were coming and going so there was always something to check out. We met a nice regular who gave us the run down on the place and we chatted with him. If you're a fan of Old Style Light, loud and friendly atmosphere and decent prices, 2 beers for less than $10, this is the place for you. Good location. Good dive bar vibe. Was walking round Sunday morning and ended up eating breakfast there. 3 people with no drinks or coffee was close to 40.00 for 2 eggs, 2 strips of bacon, hash brown and toast each. It was good but kind of wish we just walked to McDonalds and save 30 bucks for the same. I just chalked it up to downtown Chicago where you get gouged at every turn. I have been here several times and this place is always the same. Ok drinks. Ok service. Ok music. It's just all the average. Frankly, the location and the name is the best for me. The beer selection is good especially if you don't mind bottle beers because there is not so much to choose from on draft. The jukebox is usually already so busy that by the time I get here I never get to hear my songs - even if I'm there for two or more hours (but this is all experience on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays). The worst thing about the place is definitely the service. The girls are just unfriendly to other young girls. I don't know if it's some sort of girls' war zone over there but they never smile back at me, never try to be nice and make conversations even if I try to start it. Sorry for saying it this way, but luckily for me, these witches don't strive for more than 10% tip. More money to spend elsewhere and on nice service, so yippee! read more

Solid dive bar. It really gets going on Friday and Saturday nights, a more raucous crowd with tunes blaring on the jukebox. Drop in after work on a weeknight if you want a more chill time. Yep, drinks are going to be $1 or $2 more here than they'd be in a comparable bar in a cheaper hood, but hey, they take cards. I just can't with cash-only businesses in 2017. This place is amazing. It's a dive. It's a hole in the wall. It has one cook and one flat top grill. But it's amazing. The soundtrack takes you back to a very specific time. Okay what IS this bar? Did you even know it was here? My friends and I were on a barcrawl and didn't feel like waiting in line at American Junkie (ain't nobody got time for that) so we quite literally stumbled in here. Did you know there were dives in River North? I didn't! Maybe my radar for them is just not up. There were "regular" looking people with sullen expressions and looks on their faces like this is where they sit all day, and then a bunch of people like us - rowdy day drinkers who don't even know how we got here? I feel like the beer was overpriced, not for River North, but for a dive. The JUKEBOX however, contained such glories as Wham, Bon Jovi, Meatloaf, and all the other crap my friends and I like to request to make you hate us. Or love us, if you're awesome. We danced around when we weren't hanging out at our table (it was like 4 pm, not exactly standing room only), and nobody judged us! The bartenders were these two really attractive women...in next to nothing...BOYS come here for some eye candy behind the bar...no joke. We went here after a show at HOB...I'm always a huge fan of dive bars and we just wanted a cheap, cold beer. After reading reviews about everyone raving about how cheap it is- I have to admit I'm disappointed. Now, I don't consider myself cheap. But when I see one $ on Yelp! and read that it's cheap, I get a little taken aback when I see that a draft 312 costs $7.00 (and I know the fact that someone in my group drank a 312 likely discredits this entire review). I would expect to pay that or more at any restaurant in River North, but not at this place. I can still smell rancid sewer on my clothes, and after the sub-par service we received on a Tuesday night at 10 PM I wonder why so many people rave about this spot. read more

I really used to hate this place. However, I now finally get it. It is not something you can explain to someone. They just have to have that moment of epiphany as I did. This place is like a diner gone wrong. There are seats and tables as well as seats at the bar. The bathroom is clean, but really old...and the doors aren't level so people eating can see in if they really wanted to. However, that is just part of why this place is awesome. The staff is always...hmmm...I don't know the proper word other than PERFECT. They are just friendly enough and just efficient enough. Also, I never understood why this place opens at 9 am and serves drinks at 9 am until my last visit. A couple of weekends ago, I was wrangled into an After Hours by my friends...which led to an After After Hours (what???) which led to Snicker's at 9 am. You know, so you can keep that buzz going until all other places start serving at 11 am. That is exactly what this kind of place is. A place where all of the whacky, certifiable, partayers, etc. come. It's always a bizarre mix of people and makes for amazing people watching. My boyfriend and I were looking for a late night spot near our hotel so we decided to check this place out one Sunday night. Keep in mind this place IS a dive bar. However, the drinks were not cheap. The bar rail was full of drunken men who were aggressively hitting on any female that would look at them. One woman was so beyond wasted that she could barely stand. And nobody seemed to care. Say whatever you want about this place, but I'm a local, and I'm here to tell you that I've never had a bad time at this bar. I've been popping in there for years and while the clientele is never predictable, what is predictable is the way that the staff has a handle on everything that is going on in the bar. The female bartenders and female manager are particularly in tune with making the female patrons feel comfortable. One time, a guy stumbled over and was bothering my girlfriend and I, and all it took was one nod in the manager's direction and he was asked to leave. I was so impressed with their concern for my comfort and safety. Last month I had the pleasure of meeting John, the owner. It was a busy time at the holiday's but he was so welcoming, that my friend and I scrapped our plans for the evening and stayed at Snickers. Our cocktails were delicious. My friend is a big fan of the gyros, but John made me one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I've ever had. Yum. I'll be back there soon. read more

I had walked by here quite a few times and was hoping this place would be my answer to Moe's tavern on the Simpsons: a no-frills place to get my drink on, devoid of attitude. I came in on Sunday after July 4th. With the long weekend, the party was still going strong. Word to the wise: there is no a/c so it is best to grab a seat near the windows on a stifling summer day. Breakfast service was still going strong even in the late afternoon, with patrons nursing their hangovers in a dark, relatively quiet environment. The food didn't look all that appealing to me. I wanted to go with the gyros but a look at the guy's plate a couple of seats over showed congealed meat and not much in the way of add-ons (pita, sauces, etc.). Since I eat first with my eyes, I knew this wouldn't be an option for me. Instead, I went for the Chicago-style hot dog ($3.50 and otherwise unremarkable, although I did enjoy the lightly toasted bun). The people-watching was wide ranging- everyone from tourists, to rough looking characters and a guy wearing sockless loafers and downing Heinekens. A local to the Chicago city directed us here and was very enthusiastic about this bar saying that we HAD to go there. Usually locals know best, so we listened to his tip and headed this way. There are lots of great bars in the area and I'm upset we chose this one.....I was definitely disappointed by his recommendation. We had about an hour to kill before heading to the United Center for a hockey game. We ordered a couple of shots, then I got a rum & diet while my boyfriend ordered a Long Island Iced Tea. The Long Island was terrible, heavy on the coke, light on the sour mix, and strongly tasting of cheap tequila. My boyfriend had to ask for a little bit more of the sour mix to be added after we both struggled to slug down some of the terrible mixed drink. My rum & diet was pretty strong, so I wasn't complaining. All of the drinks were really expensive as well. I understand that we were in the city but a $10 disgusting Long Island at a dive bar? No thank you! We also wanted to order some food but we were unable to order food because the bartender didn't know where the cook was? Unprofessional if you ask me. Small and crowded, this place has specials on Old Style and jager bombs. The Wrigleyville douche staples. It seems they serve food but one look at filthy grill area told me to stay away.
