Took my 4 year old here for his second ever professional haircut. The first one we had over a year ago was an absolutely traumatic disaster and I was really dreading ever taking him again. We came to Miriam on the recommendation from his preschool teacher and I was truly blown away by what a great experience it was. I am a grandmother, who took my own children to snips when it opened a long time ago. I now go with my daughter-in-law and my grandsons to get their haircuts. The atmosphere is fun for children and takes away some of the discomfort children may have with getting their haircut, Miriam has been an amazing stylist and the boys always look fantastic when they leave. I would recommend Miriam only when booking an appointment she's the best there, and really knows how to handle kids. We have a 3-year-old who is mostly nonverbal and doesn't cooperate with haircuts. Other hairstylists try to ease him into it and avoid stressing him, which doesn't work at all. At Snips they sit him down, put on a cartoon, and get the haircut done as fast as possible. Will definitely take him there again. read more

We were in the area and our son was in desperate need of a haircut. We called in b/c we weren't sure if they were open or had appointments available. Luckily enough we were able to make a same day appointment. The woman was super nice and sweet and able to cut his hair super quick. The front desk was incredibly rude when I came in and they said "yeah we don't take walk-ins" -- then why is it on your website that it says you do? Junior's cut is just okay, for $18 plus tip. A couple of days after the cut, I started noticing little scraggly bits and a cowlick. What's good about this place, though, is that the owner is very gentle, cheerful and sweet with the kids. My boy enjoyed getting the cut, and loved the toys and videos, balloons and candy. I am once and for all giving up on this place. I have a 6 year old girl with straight hair and relatively low standards when it comes to her haircuts. I mean I don't need her looking like she walked out of a catalog when it's over or anything. That said, I do expect the stylist to be able to achieve a basic straight line! This last time was a whole new low. The line looks more like it's been nibbled by a rodent vs. cut. It's like they just pull in people off the street here and give them a pair of cheap scissors and say "go!" It's amazing anyone here actually has any cosmetology training at all. Never again, Snips! Won't take our boys to anyone else! My sons are 2 and 3 1/2. Picture a cork in a typhoon with hair. Now try to give a decent cut. This is my two year old. He bobs and weaves better than Muhammad Ali! In fact the stylist nearly got a standing ovation from other parents at the salon for her amazing performance cutting my kids hair. It turned out SO cute!!!! Came in a few weeks ago for our 3 year old daughter's first haircut. Her hair is longish, it goes past her shoulders. She got a perfect trim, the look is still the same but the ends are smooth and natural looking and no more gnarly snarls. I was impressed, actually, I thought it was just going to look like a straight across chop...I didn't know you could get this care on a lil kid's haircut. Appointments were easy to make online (a couple week's out for a Saturday appt), and the whole thing went super smoothly, with a nice dose of paw patrol to keep her attention. My 3.5 year old son has been coming here for about 1.5 years. I think this is a great, clean, kid friendly place to bring your little one (or big one) for a nice quick cut. My son only sees Miriam... she's great with him, she's fast & knows exactly how i like his hair. Me: Hi, I have a 1 yr old and I was wondering if I needed an appt. or is it possible to just walk-in. Man Who Answered Phone: Appointment. then dial tone. The dude just hung up the phone on me. No, you will need an appt. or we only take appointments or Sorry, we are too busy to take walk-ins. I had an appointment with Amanda or Miriam.....can't remember. I came in 20 minutes early with my 3 year old son. Amanda was busy with another customer so the receptionist said she could do it. Big mistake letting the receptionist touch my son's head. It seemed as though she just recently graduated from beauty school. She was very impatient with my son and physically forceful with him. She kept complaining that he wouldn't sit still....sorry but which 3 year old actually sits still for longer than a minute? She would push his head around to get the right angle for the cut. Kept pinning him back so that he would sit up straight. It was to the point that she was making him cry. I've had great haircuts with the other stylists in the past. Because of the last woman who cut my son's hair I will never come back here again. read more

Too bad there's not a zero star rating. I made an appointment to bring my daughter to Snips for her first haircut, but I'm about to call back and cancel. Whomever I spoke with on the phone was so rude, I'd rather let her hair grow until it's down to the floor than bring her here. I wouldn't dream of bringing my child in to this place to have her subjected to such negativity as I received on the phone. When I called and said I'd like to make an appointment for my daughter's first haircut, all the person on the other end said was "OK." Not, "great, what time would you like to set that up for?" not "Thanks for choosing us for your child's first hair cut, when would you like to come in?" NOTHING. JUST "OK." I hate when people in the service industry expect you to do their job for them. You chose this career, not me buddy. The call continued with nothing but curt, one-word responses and lots of sighing in exasperation. I could practically hear him rolling his eyes over the phone. A child's first haircut is not only something very intimidating for the little one, it's something sacred to the parents. To be treated with such disrespect before I've even entered the establishment is unforgiveable. If this is their demeanor on the phone, how do they treat their customers in person? Don't bother with this place. Take your child someplace where they'll treat you like a human being. I'd rather drive to San Ramon to someplace where I know my child will be welcomed with open arms than to Snips, where they apparently are put-out by having you come in. read more

I love this place. My son Gio has been here 3 times already I love it. He has autism and I have taken him other places that are not patient with him. He usually seen Miriam to get his cuts and she works fast and I mean FASSSSTTT.. My son is scared of the sound of clippers but she used comb and scissors. After he was done he got a lollipop and balloon. Prices here are high but for what its worth I leave satisfied that his hair is taken care of here. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the woman who cut my daughters hair, but her chair was the first one on the left when you walk in. This woman gave my 3 year old daughter the worst haircut you've ever seen- far worse than the hack jobs I've done in our bathroom for free and I have 0 hair cutting skills. I told her that we had upcoming school pictures and it was almost like she purposely did a bad job. She was rude and didn't listen when I told her to stop cutting the bangs so short. Bangs were almost non-existent, but we're totally crooked. One side of her hair was noticeably shorter than the other. My daughter isn't even squirmy and likes getting her hair cut, so there's really no excuse. I will NEVER come back here. You can get a way better, less expensive haircut for your kid almost anyplace else. If I could give no stars I would. read more

I was really looking forward to my son's haircut here because I had heard good things about this place and I wanted to support a local business, but I really should have read the reviews here. $26 plus $5 tip for a boys haircut... And the cut was nowhere near what I wanted. Smh. We got to the salon about 5 minutes late as there was no parking and I figured it'd be Ok since we were the last appointment for the day. We walked in, and there was a small area of toys and a stylist immediately got up from the first station and assisted us. Once our appointment was confirmed, she immediately brought us to the chair and turned on the TV and started playing TMNT. My son refused to sit alone, so I had to sit with him. The stylist quickly threw a cover-up over me, with my son on my lap, then put one on him as well. She asked me what cut I wanted for my kid, and I told her I didn't think of it, but I want it short. She said "ok we'll just trim a few inches off then." As soon as she started cutting I had hair all over myself and my son... The cover up didn't even cover us at all. When she said a few inches, she literally just trimmed a few inches off everywhere. In the end his hair didn't even look like any particular style, the sides were unnatural and boxy looking, there were stray long pieces of hair everywhere, and he had long bangs that reached his eyes. I just left as I was late for another appointment, but I will not be coming back here again. I felt rushed, the whole experience was awkward as the stylist didn't talk to us other than the questions at the beginning, and the cut was sub par for the price I paid. Update: I went back to get my kids hair fixed...And it got even more messed up. Never again..... read more

Service was HORRIBLE. How can someone be a child barber and NOT be friendly. The guy barely said a word even thing I was trying to introduce my son to him. The worst part was that he reached in his drawer and pulled out some filthy clippers full of hair and began cutting my Son's hair. My wife and I was in shock! Then he handed my Son a toy full of hair to play with. Ive never seen a barber that doesnt clean his clippers. The kid before you could have had lice or ring worms. I think the quality of the customer service DOES matter, and my first experience with Snips was similar to the other one-star reviewer: astonishingly rude. I mean, really, really, really rude. Yes, it's true, I was 15 minutes late to my first appointment *at a children's salon,* because my 3-year-old napped long. I'd be pretty shocked if that had never happened before. Snips called to say, in extremely unfriendly fashion, that they couldn't cut my son's hair because they had another appointment. I said I totally understood, I was running late, I was really sorry, and I asked if there was any way we could still make it because we were two doors down the street, RUNNING toward the door, and my son's birthday was the next day. This is the response I got on the phone: "Yeah?" (Silence.) Look. I was late. I've got a kid and so does everybody else who goes there. We're all pretty understanding of the concept of "kid time," or at least we should be. And to be that rude to anyone for any reason is just TERRIBLE customer service. If you want people to try out or come back to your establishment, at least try to 1) accommodate if possible, because a kid's haircut takes 15 minutes and I've OFTEN waited 10 minutes at salons even when I showed up on time; 2) reschedule or at least ASK if I want to reschedule; 3) have a bare minimum of friendly human interaction. I actually don't care if the haircuts are good. There's no WAY I'm calling Snips again. So, I'm glad everybody else likes their haircuts. They certainly act like they've got plenty of business and they don't need mine. Hope it's true. read more

Wonderful place! I took my son for his first haircut here, and I could not have been happier. There was a little delay, due to Lindsay running late, but there were plenty of toys to entertain my son. He's 15 months old, and he seemed fine with the wait. He was a little too squirmy to sit by himself in chair, so Lindsay cut his hair while he sat in my lap. He cried, he wiggled, tried to get down, etc.... But through all that, Lindsay was able to give him a great cut. She was great about checking the length with me, after cutting just little off the front first. She did a great job! I understand they're under new management. Lee has passed away, and a family member who has another salon in Temescal has taken over. They're in the process of getting a new computer system, etc... And, they're now open Sundays! I think you may be able to schedule on-line soon. This place is perfect for kids. There's lots to distract the children, from mini tvs at each station playing movies, to plenty of toys in the waiting area. They gave me a little envelope to save from my son's first haircut and even took some photos to document the experience. We'll definitely be back. Great place! read more

Anyone who can patiently cut a child's hair while the kid screams his/her head off deserves at least 3 stars in my book. My son did the first time he came here and he came away with the best haircut of his life (with Lee, the owner). The second time we came, my son cried because he didnt have Lee cutting his hair. So, maybe he doesnt introduce himself or make small talk, but he does good work. It's not a easy task getting a haircut for a child between 1-3 but this place has it down to T. They have movies for the kids and toys to keep them entertained while the process of getting the haircut is complete. The stylists there are very patient and understanding and make a difficult task a breeze. Highly recommended for kids. read more

I took my 2-yo boy for a haircut today. My little guy has a VERY hard time with doctors, dentists, hair stylists... everyone who want to lay hands on him. I took him in the past to my own hair stylist-who is great and has two kids same age as mine-, but after 3 minutes of my son crying, the owner of the place came to me saying that I needed to calm the child down, that the clients were complaining and that that was child abuse... (What the...!!) I thought that the solution was taking him to a kids hair place. I wasn't sure about Snips because of some reviews I read, but I had to try anyway. I couldn't see my kid'd eyes because of the long bangs.... I had an appointment with Alice. Not only she did a GREAT job considering the tantrum my son was going through, but she was super patient and calm. The lady at the front desk (the owner?) tried to distract him several times and was also patient and totally understanding. I will definitely be back soon!! read more

We took our two kids for the first time today. There are toys and tvs at every chair, so the kids were happy to go in. My daughter has special needs, hasn't had many salon cuts. She did great and got a good, basic trim from a female stylist. My toddler needed a major cut. We agreed on a longer style. We are shocked at how uneven and choppy it is. Yes, he is small and wiggly - that's why we chose a children's salon. The male stylist never said a word to our child, just turned on a loud cartoon and cut away. Little guy tried to get down and away several times; I sat close by to help entertain him, but felt like I was in the way, not a word of conversation after the initial cut plan. Lee is quiet & calm, and if you and your child value that, you'll have a good experience. He gets the job done and the cut looks fine. I have been with my toddler son and more recently young toddler daughter, neither of whom is particularly docile around people with scissors. Yes, it could be cleaner. I've gone to all the different local places to get a decent (read: value for money) haircut for my daughter and son, ages 4 and 2. From Supercuts to hole-in-the-wall places, even to my own stylist at Genray. None do as good a job as Miriam at Snips, which is why I keep coming back. She's worth the $$. Finally, someone who made my daughter's hair look less like a mushroom and even my son's faux hawk is a fun cut for a little boy that can be worn with product to look like a cool dude, or without to look more respectable. (All Miriam's idea.) She gives great cuts which really do suit the child. My son also hates the sound of clippers, so she's nice enough to do the whole cut with scissors. My tips: Make your next appointment while you're paying and have fun on the free Ms Pacman while your kid gets their hair cut. read more

Note: I showed up at 4pm on a Thursday afternoon, per a reservation I booked the day before. My son's appointment was not a walk in. My son's hair grows pretty fast and we've tried several different places including a barber in Montclair, a barber in Walnut Creek, and two other kids-only hair salons. I liked Snips. Nothing too fancy, but a great little space where kids can play with toys, and two chairs where they cut hair. My son is mesmerized by television. So imagine my glee when I saw they had two televisions, one for each station. That was probably the easiest haircut ever. My son barely moved. But the best part and the reason I give them 5 stars is that I really loved the haircut my son got. It looked good and it grew out really nicely. Can't say that for the haircut we got for him the next time around. read more

We used to go to another kid's salon in our area, but we had gotten inconsistent quality of haircuts and haircutters. Then, a friend told me how much they loved Snips and I am so thankful they did! Miriam has been cutting my 13yo son's hair since he was a toddler. She does a great cut stylistically, and is quick and low-fuss. We tried a couple of conventional stylists at Slick & Dapper; they produced good-looking cuts but too much snipping and shaving and too lengthy time-wise for my boy. read more

Now that Cool Tops on Rockridge has moved over the hill to Orinda, I was looking for a kid-friendly hair salon. We decided to try this spot on College a try. I was pleased with the online appointment system. I liked how the stylist asked my daughter for input on her haircut. Sure, I was nervous about my daughter getting her beautiful long hair cut into a bob but it turned out cute. There were kids' DVDs playing on the TVs at each station but my daughter had fun watching the younger kids get their haircuts. read more
