The man leading the session was neither friendly nor welcoming to newcomers, which made the environment feel closed and uninviting. Only three men were present, and midway through the practice, a woman entered noisily through the front door and began clanging dishes in the kitchen -- quite distracting in what was supposed to be a meditative space. The leader then emphasized performing prostrations before an altar lined with photos of men who appeared to be figures of reverence, including one or two of the brothers who founded the center. Having attended many dharma centers across different regions, I found this one to be the least welcoming and most unusual. It's disappointing that an organization benefiting from religious tax status would show so little kindness or inclusivity toward community members. Displaying a photo of the Dalai Lama on an altar does not automatically make a place compassionate or genuine in spirit.
