Please read this before making a reservation! We made a reservation for 6 and 2 couldn't make it last minute due to an emergency and they still charged the $20 cancellation fee for showing up with a smaller party. This feels like theft and unnecessary. They also made us wait for all of our party before seating us, which just made them miss out on more food and booze that would would've bought as we were waiting for our 4th to arrive. I've never dined somewhere with such weirdly strict policies that are anti hospitality. The host was super rude to me when explaining the cancellation of the 2 guests that couldn't make it. He said loudly "wow are y'all serious! That's $40 of cancellation fees!" Trust me sweetie, money's not a problem with us. You don't need to shame me for your weird cancellation policy. I've worked in hospitality for a decade before my career took off and this place felt like it has potential to be something great (super good food and ambiance) but with such bad service and management (stupid policy) that will ultimately drive it into the ground. If you're going to have policies that cause so much drama, perhaps don't take reservations. When the host seated us, he turned our table of 6 into a table of 3 (probably in the hopes they could re-sell that table to a walk in, even though we were paying $60 in cancellations for that part of the table.) this feels so unethical and icky. We also ordered a ton of food and could've used that extra space to dine more comfortably. The food was really good but overall the service was so garbage that it didn't make it worth it. They never once came over to refill our waters, no plates or silverware were on our table until we asked (after already having food ran to our table 2-3 times...how could they not notice we needed share plates at a TAPAS place.) We had to flag someone down to ask for drinks, as our server completely forgot about it. Nobody bussed our plates off our table until we had no room left, even though they had come to the table many times to drop off food, and could tell there wasn't room. You can't take plates with you as you go? This is service 101... This place needs to take a hard look at themselves if they want to survive. The entire wait staff needs to be re-trained, and their cancellation policy should be re-evaluated. read more

Early dinner here last night with two friends. Oh, this place could be five stars with just a little effort and consistency. Great vibe. Music played, but not too loud (we sat inside). Outdoor seating available as well, and they had the COVID-45 protocols in place. Menu popped with a number of dishes screaming from the menu, "Take me! Take me!" The gambas, padron peppers, lobster, steak empanadas, on and on the list went. Alas, several dishes disappointed. The gambas, lobster, and bone marrow were all terribly salty. I mean, they were so salty as to be difficult to eat. Someone in the kitchen was trying to kill us. None of the three menu descriptions included salt as an ingredient. While we ate the food, we also drank gallons of water. Candidly, we should have sent the dishes back. Not sure why so many people equate salt with flavor, but it's not. Sodium is a killer, and while a little bit is needed by all mammals, the levels of salt in these three dishes blew my chubby face into a clown balloon. Empanadas were not what I expected, as these were mostly pastry. While the filling was excellent, it was hard to find in the huge amount of pastry dough. The padron peppers, tuna crudo, and oysters were good choices. These three dishes were not salty and did not require the obese guy at the next table to make sure his life alert system was operational. Just incredible all around. We sat at one of the tables outside, which has great ambiance. The parklet was well done and had really pretty stringed lights. There were musicians playing on the sidewalk which really upped the atmosphere. Sobre Mesa is a cocktail bar but features incredible tapas and as someone who doesn't drink alcohol but loves going out and being a part of lively scenes, Sobre Mesa was particularly gratifying for me because they offer alcohol free mixed drinks!! For once, I didn't have to order just a coke or a water, I got to order something special and that was greatly appreciated. But now to the food. If you've been to alaMar, you know that Chef Nelson is a magician with food, but even with that knowledge, the food at Sobre Mesa was a pleasant surprise. I expected it to be good. Really good. But literally everything that came out was just incredible. We ordered: lobster mussels (my personal favorite) chicken wings poblano peppers tuna shrimp Everything was great. The mussels were my favorite which was surprising considering I really don't love mussels all that much. The sauce was the star of the dish and every bite felt like a slice of heaven. Per usual, I was treated like a super star by the door man, the hostess and the bartender! I didn't care about the wait, the money or sitting at the bar- I've been here about three times prior, usually I recommend it to others and totally worth it before last night! ...your host....that's a different type of experience -they left me feeling ashamed and embarrassed for sitting at the bar alone and not heard and dismissed when I tried to provide them feedback (on my way out) on their approach and delivery, not their request. I understand business needs but highlighting I was alone, and they needed the seats next to me (which no one ended up in) amidst CHEWING my food was inappropriate and caught me off guard! Perhaps someone with more experience in the industry AS A HOST could have delivered it better and would be a better reflection of what you've put together for your brand. His last words as a representative of YOUR establishment were "I don't need this from you right now, as he turned his back and told me have a good evening." Don't get me wrong, I love salt, but this was going too far. The dishes were really delicious, but most of them were on the verge of being too salty, and both the shrimp and mussels were so salty that our lips were shriveling and we were gulping down water the whole time. The next morning I woke up with a tongue and lips that felt burnt from how salty the food was. Realistically we should have sent these dishes back and notified the wait staff, but we we decided to plough through. My organization hired Sobremesa for our virtual holiday party and OMG it's the most fun I'd had in quarantine. Sobremesa sent us two packages one with food and the other with drinks and steps to follow for an amazing creation. Not only that but a bartender joined our zoom meeting to teach us how to make our drinks and wow how delicious! Best believe I will make it on my own. The food in the photo was a precooked chicken that we finished cooking in the oven with a side of cassava and plantains. Chef Nelson took us step by step until we were all plating. Took my mother here for brunch for Mother's Day and here is my honest review: Good cocktails, heavy food that lacked presentation, service that was rushed and despondent. Three of the four eggs we received in our orders were undercooked and gummy. I would come back for drinks in the evening but not for food. We were served by four different people over the hour plus we were there. Each person blamed the last for whatever wasn't taken care of. No serving utensils given, waited 35 mins for a cocktail. I was looking for a place to celebrate a special occasion and found Sobre Mesa from Yelp. It's not the cheapest place so beware for a pricey night. We ordered some beautiful drinks and some tapas. This place might be new, but it is super popular already. We got lucky and got seated relatively quickly, then got told we have 90 mins to enjoy our time there. It took them a long, LONG time to get us our drinks, and even longer time to get our food, it is clear that they don't have enough staff, or their kitchen cannot handle the volume. Either way, I was a bit upset how long it took to get our food and drinks, and 60 mins in, I was thinking of leaving without getting all of our food. The drinks we ordered were good (I had the my familiar), but this is not the spot to order food. Not only did it take a while for our food to arrive, but it wasn't very good (we got the cauliflower curry, empanadas, Nutella chocolate cake, and stuffed plantains). The chocolate cake was actually disgusting -- it seemed like they pulled it out of the fridge pre made and put it on a plate.
