I came here with my family visiting from the Dominican Republic/New York! Please keep in mind that you MUST be 21+ with proper ID to come eat here, even if you're not drinking! This caused me a bit of an issue but i ended up finding an old NYC id in my suitcase! Well worth going back across the bridge to get my ID and coming back. The manager, chef, hostess, waiters, EVERYONE wanted to make sure we had an excellent experience since it was our first time, recommending sampler drinks/flights and explaining every item on the menu. The food was super authentic to the Dominican ingredients i am used to but with a twist! I felt there was tons of Caribbean and latino fusion in there! They advertised a appetizer drink evening with 3 top chefs. $75 for ticket with $30 service charge. Showed up and they were 1 hour behind schedule. The appetizers were less than desirable and the 2 drinks they offered for $75 bucks were nasty. All I can say is it was a very expensive 2 drinks in a regular bar scene. Not at all what I expected for that type if money. The 6pm gathering was treated much better according to my friend. Don't go to the later evening OR so called after party. Cost just as much for 1/2 the delight. Sorry Sobre Mesa I was not impressed. read more

Sobre Mesa was a wonderful experience. I was worried about parking on a Saturday night but it was not a problem at all. We arrived in the area around 4:40pm for our 5:30 reservation for six people and found plenty of metered street parking right in front of the restaurant. We sat in the car until 5:15, paid for the meter for up until 6pm, then checked in with the host outside. There was already a standby line forming outside, but after a quick ID check, we were seated in a nice booth across from the bar. The waitresses were friendly and helpful, and both the waitresses and the busboy were very attentive and polite. All employees were wearing masks. I did not have a cocktail, but the rest of the group said they were very good, and everyone would have had another, were we not educators on a budget. The food was most excellent so it was hard to pick a favorite! The portions were quite decent for tapas, and it was easy to share between six people. Most plates we ordered came with three to six main items. We had the spiced tuna crudo, empanadas, Monterey Bay sardine, roasted stuffed ripe plantain, Gambas Al "Ajillo", and bone marrow. We loved all the sauces and the beautiful presentation of each dish. We only wished that we had more bread to wipe up the plates! The waitress asked us if we wanted to do the bone marrow luge where they pour alcohol of your choice down the bone marrow for you to drink. It sounded amusing but we ended up declining. We had a two hour limit, but we never felt rushed and had ample time to eat, drink and socialize. The food and drinks came pretty quickly considering how many customers they had both inside and outside. There was a talented live band playing outside; we did not notice until we left the restaurant and went outside. Ambiance was cute. I sat at she bar for some quick bites and some drinks. Oysters were good. Roasted pork ribs was pork meat various cuts. Not to many identifiable rib pieces and to say I was sitting at the bar, service sucked. I had to glad them down for drink when it was empty inside. Sobre Mesa, how do I even start. This is the place where u can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The drinks are amazing and the food. My Fucking Goodness it's truly an experience. Jessica our server, thank you for the drink recommendation. We will be back to try to rest of the items. It's tapas and everything is just enough, the Bone marrow made my husband a believer . He would always avoid everywhere we went. But I was able to get him to go outside his comfort zone and he was impressed. The empanadas man we had 2 orders the tender steak and the cheese gave me a foodgasm . We also had the shrimp in the Ethiopian butter. The sautéed carrots nice and crisp with the sauce man. So phenomenal the breed pudding the finish the night. We had another drink and I think another dish. But I was in a taste coma and slight buzzed to remember. But this experience has to be relived. The inside took u into another place. I did not feel like I was downtown Oakland. I felt transported to another place. I thought I was sitting on Collins Blvd in Miami. My husband and I were strolling by on a Sunday and saw this lively place. They had live Brazilian music and tables on the parklet out front. You get a QR code coaster and a number from the hostess and then can pull up the menu on your phone and order through your phone. The servers bring out the food to your table based on the number you put in your order. We ordered a croissant fried chicken sandwich and the vegan bean bowl. The food is just okay. The fried chicken was great, but the sandwich was a little messy and the croissant tasted like it was from Costco, which does not mean it was bad but just average. The bean bowl had great flavor, but was a little too salty. I would say the prices seem a little high for what the food was, but I consider the prices reasonable given COVID times so I am happy to pay more than usual to help a small business stay open. We also had cocktails, which were delicious! I would definitely come back for the ambiance and to support a great business. The inside is beautiful and hope to be able to come back someday when we can gather inside. read more

It was so surprising to me that it's been a year since I last was here. The menu change was slight but good. We ordered a lot of what we got last time and two new things, the cheese empanada and the steak. I was kinda sad when the empanadas came out and there were only two on the plate and not three, but the steak empanadas were incredible. The cheese empanadas were not something I'd get again. It was lacking flavor and actually made me hungrier. The patatas bravas were good, but they were a lot better before. The sauce added nothing. While I didn't like the plantain, my friend loved it. It was just alright. The steak was perfection. It was the most balanced meal and really saved the meal for me. We got a pound cake for dessert and it was good, it just needed more.. like milk/coffee or ice cream. It was too dry. I forgot to mention, we made reservations and had the most comfortable seats, so that was nice. Everyone on staff were so kind to us and our food came out wayy faster than I expected which was nice. read more

I REALLY wanted to love this place. I saw it reviewed on the local show "Check Please" and was excited to go with my friends. They get 5 stars for the decor - it's really beautiful and festive inside. We tried many of their tapas. The papas y queso empanadas which were so good that we ordered them again. The stuffed plantains were carefully crafted and quite tasty. The chicken skewers were just so-so and not that interesting. I was disappointed with the oysters. Most restaurants will list what type of oysters they are serving for the night, but we had to flag down a server to ask. After we ordered them, they came covered in their own version of a mignonette, along with fish roe. It totally overpowered the oyster, so much so that I scraped it off to eat the next one. I mentioned flagging down a server because they are doing what many restaurants continue to do after COVID - you have to order everything on your phone and multiple people deliver it to your table. The lack of real "service" was a big downside for me. Scrolling through sections of menus on my phone each time is not the social time I was looking for. Now for the drinks...I'm still perplexed at what happened. My friend ordered us both the same tequila drink. When they arrived they looked the same, but had different garnishes. We asked the server and she assured us they were the same. But after tasting them they were not. I liked mine and spent the rest of the night trying to order it again on the menu but never found it, so I ended up sampling a few tequila drinks that were just ok. We think the bartender made a mistake on my first drink. (Also to note: there's a tequila and club soda style drink that should NEVER be served. It's terrible!) Finally, the service staff was friendly, but they really just deliver the food, so I was surprised when I went to pay (on my phone where if you don't have Apple Pay you have to enter all your credit card info...grrr!), that the default tip is 25%! I usually tip 20%, unless the service is above and beyond. Since it's tapas & drinks, you are ordering on your phone more than once and inputting your payment info. It's very presumptuous for them to expect a tip of 25%. I'd consider going back for that one drink, but I don't know what it is! read more

We got to the restaurant and the host sat us down, we proceed to place our order they the app after that we had to ask for water we never got plates , knives or forks. 25 minutes later i asked the host for our food and he said he was going to check 10 min passed asked someone else for our foods d said they were busy 10 min passed and one plate was brought to us we ate it 10 min later we got the Warm salad which was COLD !!!! at this point we got up and left because the server was schooling me on temperature of the food. we proceed to leave and ended up in Mc Donald's. Absolutely loved loved this place! I can definitely appreciate the 21 or older age requirement because the atmosphere is so much more relaxing. The drinks are phenomenal. The tri tip skewers were absolutely my favorite. I tried the bone marrow for the first time ever and it was really really good I totally get it. I setup a cooking and cocktail demo as a virtual event for my coworkers and it was AMAZING! If you're looking for a fun virtual event for work or friends or just a fun date night - this is it. The staff there is extremely responsive and thoughtful with great attention to detail. The day before our event everyone received a box with all the ingredients. So easy from start to finish and not to mention extremely tasty. Shout out to Sade Stamps and Chef Nelson for such a fun experience! It will be hard to top this one. read more

This place had received much much hype because of the chef and all his accolades. I did my research. But I was entirely underwhelmed. After spending quite some time scoring a Sunday reservation I took my partner there while in town. We're not an easy audience because he is the only Mexican that grew up in Miami, and also happens to be a retired chef. We had the mushroom mofongo, which I don't think worked at all, and had me craving New York immediately, the last time I tasted the *real* good stuff. It was mushy and it seemed to be laced with sweet potato which made it way too sweet and to be quite honest gross. I didn't enjoy it. He ate the short rib sando that looked OK, but not amazing. We also tried the Sancocho which I think was also a complete fail because clams, fish and kidney beans do not work well imo. They just don't. My taste buds wanted cilantro, corn and other stuff that would've worked better in a sancocho with seafood. I'm always drawn to plantains but it was sold out and I was hoping for the surf and turf which was nowhere on the menu! What a waste of a weekend! Overall I think this was fusion gone wrong--sorry to say that. But you can always tell ethnic cuisine "for the gringos" and this was it. If the inside tables are filled, you're asked to wait outside in a line. I was told the wait was 15mins for a party of 2, though waited 48mins to be seated. Come late, leave hungry. We made a reservation a few days before and with such a strict cancellation policy we made sure we were on time and ready for some good food and drinks. Our reservation was for 9:15pm but we weren't seated until about 9:30. The place itself is beautiful! I couldn't stop oooh'ing and awww'ing at all of the fabulous decor, lighting and sitting areas. Our waitress was amazing too and helped us order some delicious cocktails. Everything was going great until we took a look at the online food menu and realized the only thing left was cauliflower, tostones and some salmon crudo. Our party was more than disappointed especially since all of these options were very small and would not even compare to an actual meal. The waitress was apologetic and we knew it wasn't her fault but with such a strict cancellation policy that charges you if you don't cancel your reservation with 5 hours notice (I understand things are weird with covid but with a place that packed and a waitlist you know the table would get filled), it felt like a waste of our evening to show up to a place with practically no food. read more

Finally I made it here and it was amazing. From the food and cocktails down to the friendly staff and extremely prompt service Sobre Mesa did not disappoint. Had 10 dishes abd everything was extremely flavorful. The goat patties, venison, empanadas, stuffed plantains, bone marrow and black bean hummus are a must. The tapas were amazing but unfortunately the experience we had was very poor. We had a reservation for a Friday night at 730 showed up a few minutes before and were seated by a lady who I assumed to the manager. We were seated she tells us she hopes we enjoy our dinner for an hour and a half. I thought it odd that she mention a timeframe but didn't think too much of it. We ordered our drinks first and the waitress came back and took our food order. Food came out sporadically which we didn't mind as the table we were sitting at was tiny, right by the entrance. As our last plate comes out the waitress asks if we want dessert, we say no and she proceeds to try to leave the bill. Wait, what? How about I'd like to order another drink or how about asking if there was anything else we'd like to order?? I tell her we want to order another drink, she says ok, comes back with drink and the bill. Mind you at this point we had only been there for not even 45 min. We didn't touch the bill in the cup as I was still drinking my drink and we were finishing our last plate. She proceeds to "casually" come by at least 3 times to check if we left a card. Then finally the same lady who sat us down comes and by this point I'm irritated as all hell and we hand over the card. She mentions "we have reservations for this table" and I'm thinking we haven't even been here an HOUR!!! way to treat your customers, we made reservations too but apparently that doesn't matter once you're seated. The way we felt rushed out of this place is enough to never come back and to also let our friends and family know the same! If you don't have enough tables to accommodate your reservations, then don't take them, simple as that! Mind you, there was almost 5-7 open tables outside as we left. Never again! read more
