I've come to Sobre Mesa a few times since I live around the corner, and I love bringing new people to it all the time. The vibe is soooo cute and trendy, giving chic paradise in the middle of downtown Oak. I really enjoyed the patatas bravas, empanadas, jerk gambas shrimp, and warm herbed brioche. I wasn't the biggest fan of the crispy goat cheese or the queso de hoja fundido, but that could also be my aversion to a lot of cheese...Other than that, the cocktails are delicious and the food comes out pretty fast. My only complaint is that I've been served the wrong dishes or drink everytime I'm there, and catching the waiter can be tough on a busy night. That's all!

I was in downtown Oakland for work and we wanted late-night food and drinks to catch up over. She recommended Sobre Mesa--she'd heard good things. The ambiance was dark, moody, trendy, and romantic. It was pretty busy around 10pm on a weeknight. Service was good. We enjoyed queso de hoja fundido ($18), tater tots, and I enjoyed my Island Paradiso cocktail--contrary to some reviews, I felt that it was a strong drink! Everything was delicious. I would be back if I was in the area!

We had a reservation for 2 at 7:30 pm on a friday night and was sat at a booth! The ambiance is nice and moody, it's a little loud, but also typical for a cocktail bar on a Friday night. We didn't have a big appetite, so we got appetizers to share: - suya beef empanadas 5/5 (perfect filling to dough ratio, light & crispy outside, the sauce was the same at the herbed patatas sauce) - herbed patatas 5/5 (the sauce it came with was delicious) - warm herbed brioche 5/5 (SO GOOD, I love bread) - "adobo" chicken pinchos 2/5 (dry, and also tasted and looked like pork... not chicken?) For drinks we got: - island paradiso 3/5 (too sweet for me) - OG margarita 4/5 (standard margarita, no complaints)

Had the most amazing experience last night! It was my first time here and it definitely exceeded my expectation. Kim was awesome she provided impeccable customer service. The drinks were delicious and well balanced. The food came out hot and pretty quickly. The presentation of the food and the drinks were on point. The bar is beautiful loved the ambiance. Will definitely be coming back.

Updating my review because my last experience this past weekend was kind of sketchy , let's get into it . so upon arriving I know they check for ID. I don't know when this started happening but now there is a cover fee, which is no problem because I know it's busy and it's mostly known for being a bar with some snacks .... we came for the snacks so no problem paying a cover charge. The sketchy part about it was the hostess at the front door said they're not accepting cash for the cover fee and they are only accepting Zelle . We search the email to pay but it asked for first and last name and at that point she said never mind you guys can go sit down . so that was weird number one ! Especially because I would assume as a business your Zelle handle would have something about the business and not a personal persons Zelle . number two I know that their menu always changes depending on seasonal products so that's not a big deal , but I know they usually always have oysters . when I went to go place my order the waitress said that they do not have oysters and explained to me that it's a party tonight so they only have certain items .... but luckily for me one of the cooks from the back was standing behind her so I assume when I walked away, he corrected her because she came back and said oh we do have oysters ?! very interesting to me . Overall vibes are still cool inside , they were playing all the hits. The food was good . the empanadas ! the ingredients were very fresh. You could taste it in every bite. The goat cheese was probably our favorite thing that we got perfectly breaded gooey cheese . and the oysters were good. I just wish we could get more for what we pay for. I think it's $22 just for three. I'm used to paying $22 for six with all the ingredients that they claim they use , but yeah . I don't know what's going on with the staff. That's why I'm taking one star away other than that love the vibe , the ambience feels good. Just staff needs to get it together. And I hope they aren't scamming people at the door .

After a bit of strolling and adventuring in downtown oakland, we stopped into Sobre Mesa for a nice dinner!Arrived right when they opened at 5pm and sat by the absolutely gorgeous and friendly hostess/waitress! This place is so lovely inside! Colorful and dark decor, lots of pinks and greens. And you can't forget the disco ball at the Stunning bar. It definitely fit the vibe I was looking for. First, we ordered drinks and I got the Chan Chan. This was really good! I was expecting a sweet and refreshing drink but this was not that. It was a dark and serious banana concoction that was more of a sipper. Very alcohol forward, but I enjoyed it. For food, we got the beef empanadas, the chicken pinches, and the beef dumplings. Everything was great! For me the clear winner was the empanadas. Crispy on the outside and delicious and meaty on the inside with a yummy red sauce on the outside. Along with my drink, I really enjoyed these. Great dinner at Sobre Mesa! I enjoyed the ambiance, the great vibes, and delicious food.

We just love Sobre Mesa! Excellent cocktails, delicious bites, cool vibes, music beats but not so loud that you can't talk, and super friendly staff. We totally enjoyed the Herbed Patatas, stuffed sweet plantains and Jerk Gambas. That and a passion fruit martini - what's not to like!

Came here for my best friends bday dinner - we decided on a spread of tapas from the starters menu! Originally wanted to also order an entree but the tapas ended up being plentiful. Food very flavorful. Not gonna lie for some reason the Tots were the biggest hit for us lol. I think it's the crispiness of it. I thought the empanadas were yummy, the adobo chicken (forget the actual name of it), the brioche was an interesting combo - i think i liked the pairing and the bread was so soft and yummy. Drinks were beautiful but didn't feel like they were strong (which is fine since Im not one to drink much anymore... but would've liked a little buzz still). Vibe of the restaurant was cute. They had a DJ that night who was playing really good music. Would return to give this another shot!

Sobre Mesa is one of my favorite happy hour spots in Oakland. The food is absolutely amazing, and every visit has been consistent. My go-to happy hour order is Kimmy's Special paired with the warm herbed brioche. The atmosphere is stylish yet inviting, making it a great place to catch up with friends or unwind after work. Staff is alwys friendly and welcoming. Last time I was there, we were randomly invited to a free mezcal tasting and food pairing with dishes from Chef Nelson German!

Everything we ate. This was a lot a lot of food for two people.

Absolutely loved our experience at Sobre! The interior design and overall atmosphere are so well done, and having the live DJ playing music made the vibes completely immaculate. The food was incredible, but what truly made the night special was our server, Kim. She was amazingly attentive, friendly, a complete rockstar. We also won a raffle and got a free bottle of Pasion Reposado Tequila, as well as a Caribbean cocktail book. Flawless service, fantastic food, and top-tier ambiance from start to finish. We'll definitely be back!

We ordered half of the tapas menu. We were not pleased at all. The only dishes that stood out were stuffed plantain, herbed brioche and Caribbean rice. The rest were tasteless as if the chef had a personal vengeance against salt. The cocktail Chan Chan was delicious but it gave us a huge headache like a cheap liqueur would do. Don't think will ever go again.

The sauce to die for on the bread. Screw lo-carb - order the bread. Do not waste the sauce.

Oh my goodness the food here is good. And it's DIFFERENT - not the same as all the other tapas places. 1. We ordered the empanadas and the fried goat cheese. Both amazing. Empanada had a very tasty crust A deep fried not baked. And lots of meat. More than a lot of other places. And it had a sauce that I wanted to steal all of it because it was that good. The goat cheese was creamy and the crusty outside was very satisfying. Lovely presentation. 2. We ordered the jerk cambas which was shrimp in an incredibly tasty tomato based sauce. Order bread to dip into the sauces. You won't be sorry. 3. We ordered the pork belly but they were out of that cut and they made the same dish out of pork shoulder. It was so tender. I think it was probably better than the pork belly which is good but is so rich (fatty) that my digestive system rebels. So I was really happy with this dish. We had no room for dessert. However we found that their margaritas slide right in. The service was fabulous. Our server Alicia was so delightful and fun. She explained all the dishes to us as this was our first time. Everyone kept our water filled. Decor - lighting is perfect - not too bright. Very nice bar - colorful and really gives a great ambience. Great for dates. Music is just a little loud so maybe not the place to go for conversations across the table. There are cozy tables away from the speakers. Ask for those if you need to.

This place was super cool. We were headed to another place in the area but the great music filtering through the door made us curious. We peeked inside and loved the vibe and cool and diverse crowd. Dark lighting, nice decor, friendly hostess and bartender, nicely made cocktails, decent food, and a live singer. I would definitely be back when I'm the area. :)

We noticed two open seats at the bar and asked if we could sit there. She said the bar was first come, first serve..yet moments later, she seated two walk-ins who had been behind us in line at those exact seats. So been living in Oakland for going on 15 years now. I'm not what you would call a "bar" person. I…read moretend to enjoy my cocktails, wine, and beer in the cozy confines of my own home. That said I'm occasionally inspired to go check out the local watering holes for a good pour, some food if possible, and just to be in the presence of the human pulsation. Walking into Tallboy on a Thursday afternoon was a bit like Nirvana for me. There is a comforting vibe of neighborhood and after work people shedding responsibility and "toe the lineness" and transitioning to pondering true meaning and the other side of the elliptical bend over nicely crafted cocktails and HOTDOGS! I am a hotdog fiend, and Tallboy has a very creative range on the menu that does not disappoint. From a basic onions/mustard, an Elote Dog, an a Coney Islandesque (it has chili) version. Some folk go to bar and line up shots (or craft cocktails). At Tallboy you can do that AND line up their hotdogs which I intend on doing in the very near future. The pleasantries don't stop at the food (there are other delicious snack items on their menu to choose from too). Tallboy has a fully stocked bar, and the menu has a list of really unique and delicious signature craft cocktails. I'm not a Mezcal drinker, but I ended up dubiously ordering their Guava Martini which to my smokey surprise is made with Mezcal. I stayed with the smokey fruitiness of this Guava Martini as it was my mistake that I did not read in the description it is made with Mezcal, and ended up chasing it with their Tamarindo Cocktail which also has Mezcal. To those who really enjoy Mezcal the Tallboy Guava Martini and the Tamarindo Cocktail do not disappoint. Both have that deep Smokey Mezcal essence, but cut with the fruit sweetness. I personally think the Tamarindo balances well with the Mezcal. The Guava Martini the Mezcal comes through stronger, but both are just the tonic to release any existential pinging going on in your head. If you really want to kick in the hyperdrive pair either of these with an Elote Dog. I had their Deli Dog which sufficed. I think the Deli Dog would pair better with their standard Martini, but hey let's us not bring that snobbiness into Tallboy. Tallboy has an element of cloak and dagger or secret treehouse club about it. What I mean here is there is no signage on the outside (please keep it that way!). When you walk past all you see is this quaint beigeish/yellow brick façade of an establishment which begs you to press your face to the glass and scan what in the blazes is going on in here! Before you know it you are caught in the Tallboy tractor beam, and you find yourself sitting at the bar with some kind of craft drank and hotdog pondering the space and the very nice old fashioned wainscoting painted a shade of green circa 1930 (my description of winning in life). The cadre of bartenders are all really pleasant folk, very attentive (checking in with you to see if you need another round, hotdog, or snack), have tight shaker skills, and they know their craft and the menu. Tallboy also has SLUSHIES, and I did not do a deep dive on them, but I'm positive they may/do put spirits in them; or not. Also I noticed other patrons with a beautiful enticing thing that looked like an ice cream sundae milkshake hybrid (it had what looked like whipped cream on top) in on old timey soda fountain ice cream goblet. This could be a craft cocktail they make with the slushie, but major props for serving it in that goblet. I will investigate on my next visit which I intend to be very soon. Tallboy is the kind of bar establishment I could easily adopt as my after work living room for a couple of hours everyday.

I'm vegetarian so was so excited to try the dogs - which are vegan. And I may be biased but you cannot tell that you're missing out on anything with all the flavor packed combos. The bun was fluffy and soft and you have multiple fun themed options to choose from. My partner and I ended up getting the deli dog and truffle meltdown. Deli was perfect - classic mix of spice and crunch with the spicy brown mustard and giardiniera peppers. And the truffle meltdown was so savory and decadent - totally different flavor profiles from each dog! We were only going to grab one drink but the menu was so inventive we ended up getting two. Incident: My party of 7 came to Mad Oak around 5pm on Monday evening, 7/20. I did not have my ID on hand as I didn't realize I needed it for entry. I was not planning to consume alcohol. The staff member in charge of the outdoor entry let me in anyway after a little bit of friendly back and forth. One of our friends arrived later and similarly did not have their ID. The same staff member turned them away very rudely and dismissively. I went over to the staff member to let him know that our friend was with us and I also did not have my ID. He responded very rudely despite all members of our party being very respectful. He replied me saying, "What did I tell her?! What did I tell her?!", without explanation. Our friend who was turned away identifies as they/them and without explanation from the staff member, and inconsistent application of rules pertaining to ID, I suspect it might have been a situation where our friend was unfairly discriminated against for their appearance. To sum it up, it was not clear that IDs were required for entry otherwise I would have prepared my party ahead of time; the staff member inconsistently applied an already unclear rule; he did not explain why one guest was allowed and not another, even in the same party; and lastly, he was unnecessarily rude. Our whole party ended up leaving Mad Oak to go somewhere we could all be together. In my outreach to the restaurant a couple days later, I asked for a response to let me know that they have addressed the issue and there has been no response to date.
