I do NOT recommend this office. However, people who need help HAVE to go here. The employees know this. They are getting government benefits so they DO NOT CARE about important paperwork that needs to be submitted like ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS or CERTIFIED DOCUMENTS. They do not care about wait times WHEN YOU HAVE AN APPOINTMENT. They do not care about respect or responsibility. HOWEVER! This is how our government works! Just letting you know what you are in for. The worst example of systemic incompetence I have ever seen. Went to the website but they could not answer my questions with the simplistic examples they had. The website said to call a number to speak to an agent, which I did. The wait time ( no joke!) was 80 minutes! I work , so that obviously would get me fired. Their hours are limited to business, weekday hours. Great. Then I read here that some have waitrd over an hour on hold and were dropped! So I drove 30 minutes to try and physically set up an appointment in the future. I waited there another 40 minutes. When I got to the counter the lady told me (after the complete hell I'd just been thru with their awful system) that they could not scheduled any more appointment's. As in period. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Not the week after. Period. No options given. How can our government be this amazingly bad?!!!! And not even care that they are this bad! read more

6 years of marriage and I finally took the plunge to change my name. This wasn't that bad. The employees were friendly enough as were the people I sat by. I do wish they had a screen like how they do at the DMV though. I had a hard time hearing what number was being called due to the constant chatter. I spent about 1.5 hours here. Almost al of the time was just waiting. The actual name change took 5 minutes. My new ss card came about a week and a half later. read more

Just after the blizzard of 2011, I took the bus here when I realized I had lost my social security card in my latest move. This is the most organized government office I have ever visited. There are a few computers that allow you to select the service you need and procure a number to wait for your turn. While you wait, there is a screen that tells you all the things you can do through the SSA, some of which I did not even know. When my number was called, I went to the appropriate window, where a pleasant woman quickly and accurately addressed my needs and processed my request. I went in the middle of the week in the morning and was able to complete my business in under an hour and a half. Great work SSA! read more

EASY, HELPFUL, PLEASANT...WOW!!! I made an appointment by phone to go to the Elgin, IL SSA office for help with applying for Medicare. I was seen within 5 minutes of my appointment time, AND, Ms Mott, the woman who helped me was really great!!! She took the time to explain everything clearly to me, filled out the necessary info, and was very personable!!! After about 15 minutes, we were done, and everything is now set for my Medicare benefits to kick in on my birth month. Got there 5-10 min after they opened. Every seat was already taken! Security officer saw I looked lost and called me up to his desk. He directed me to the computer check in station. He even told my stepson that he liked his Bears shirt! I took a number and we found a seat within a few minutes. My number was called within 20 minutes and the man that helped me was very pleasant. It took only a few minutes for him to address my needs. I had a good experience here. read more

Fast and easy- good customer service. I had to change my name after getting married. I was actually dreading it- thinking it would take all day. But... it wasn't bad at all! The staff knew what they were doing and made it easy. Make sure you look online to be sure of what documents you need before you arrive ; because if you're not prepared , they will send you home- understandably. Also, check their hours online before you go. I went in the morning. I actually read reviews before I went; I drove out of my way to go to the Elgin office vs Bloomingdale due to the reviews, and I'm glad I did! read more

Wow, the Bloomingdale office should take a lesson from this office. Totally different experience from start to finish. Security guard at this location answers questions, does not yell at people waiting and threaten to kick people out. The staff are friendly, fast, and efficient. I actually had to go twice to this location and both times I had an excellent experience. My advice, avoid the Bloomingdale location and go to Elgin. You'll be happy you did!! read more

My son suddenly passed away, and I received an overpayment notice for his benefits. I knew that the current payment would be taken back, but I was concerned about the payment received the beginning of the month he passed. I did not realize the payments were made for the previous month, not the current month. The woman I spoke with, who did not mention her name was very rude and nasty. She kept pointing to the letter and telling me I wasn't entitled to the money - until I realized she was speaking about the current payment, which is sitting right where it should be so they can take it back. She really could have just explained that payments are made for the previous month, so the money received at the beginning of the month he passed was not going to be taken back. NOT FRIENDLY, NOT NICE. Won't go back to this office again, if I need help. read more

For the amount of service you guys provide you should be open longer/have more staff to make the process faster. I find myself saying this too much with government service buildings. Supply and demand needs to be met especially when your are providing required services for citizens. If you have too many customers then why haven't you hired more staff or moved to a bigger location? Please don't be a penny pincher In a time of recession, give people jobs. read more
