More of a 3.5 but felt a 3 was unfair so rounded up. The Spanakopita was quite large for something I thought would be an appetizer size. Wonderfuly light and flaky phyllo filled with layers of warm spinach. I was pleasantly surprised how warm it stayed and long the pastry remained intact and not soggy. My partner had the Greek Ribs & Chicken which came with all the Greek fixings ( rice /Greek salad / potatos / tzatziki & pita). The ribs has a nice seasoning run on them but like most Greek chicken ( I found it was quite dry). The potato's were not heavily lemoned either. It really was just a roast potato. We also had a Baklava. This was over sweet & heavy with what I found similar to the taste of black licorice or ouzo. Personally not a fan. We lucked out and got a seat to eat but most people appear to be doing take out orders and pickups here. Food takes a while to be ready so be ready to wait and eat with people sitting or standing waiting for their food. There is small side table, window counter and larger side table but there is definitely not too many places to sit. I'd recommend just puting in an order before showing up to save on waiting time. Had a fantastic meal for a good price. The roast lamb as delicious and perfectly fork tender, seasoned beautifully. Beef souvlaki was quite good as well. Portion size is very generous with rice, lemon potatoes, greek salad and good pita bread. The ambiance is quite casual and has limited seating so takeout is a good option. Greek place near Hastings and Willingdon. Parking is available along Hastings, as well as the side streets. The venue is designed more for takeout. There is a single 6 person long table, and 3 or so window bar seats. Staff are friendly and helpful, but they are definitely swamped. This place sure is popular. When my buddy and I placed our orders, the lady behind the counter told us the wait time was 1.5(!) hours. Looks like we caught them right at the dinner rush. To be fair, the phone was ringing off the hook the entire time. I think the lady went through 2 entire order pads that evening. The owner/manager was gracious enough to give us a can of Greek beverage for our troubles. Really appreciated that. The Greek lemonade was pretyt tasty too. The lamb souvlaki combo comes with 1 skewer, on a bed of rice pilaf, and a potato. There is also Greek salad, and a decent sized container of tzatziki. I also tried some of my buddy's lasagna. The dish tasted decent, but there was a pool of liquid sauce at the bottom. Guess they didn't bake it long enough or hot enough. Hopefully that was as one-off mistake. In terms of value, the food is a wee bit pricey. But the taste is good. I'm sure I'll probably be back at some point. read more

Not just needed in the area but the newer gourmet style eateries for those who want better quality, tasting ingredients. As per pic, great portions and probably restaurant-like prices but you won't be as amazed as this. The tzatziki squce totally blew it out of the world: yogurt taste, texture and right sourness too. Pita bread just as pillowy soft. Chicken souvlaki: totally moist, real breasts, none of that cheap tender stuff, which dries out especially when not fresh. They're going to do well with catering, lots of Burnaby companies looking for something newer instead the traditional Greek cuisine. read more

Food was GREAT, got lamb souvlaki ($22) and roast lamb ($26) and Jesus the roast lamb was the SOFTEST juiciest lamb I've ever had. Everything could used maybe a touch more salt but solid 8.9/10. Delicious take out dinner from SOCRATES tonight with the Bite of Burnaby promotion going on as an added bonus! We got a feast full of food including the special that had a sample of all of their souvlaki options which included pork, beef, lamb, chicken and shrimp which were all cooked to perfection on top of a bed of flavourful rice and potatoes. This cake with a decadent cheesecake and greek soda as well! Socrates Pizza was delicious and topped to the brim with different meats and cheese. The crust was the classic greek crust that was thicker and oilier but so flavourful! Appetizer platter had a little bit of everything including calamari, beef meat patties, spanakopita and a cheese filled filo pastry as well. The portion was quite reasonable for the price as we could hardly finish half and they also included some fluffy pita bread with hummus for dipping! Moussaka is a greek dish we ALWAYS go for with layers of ground beef, eggplant, potatoes and of course, creamy béchamel! The version here was a bit greasier but very delicious! The portion size is only moderate but it came with potatoes and rice so there is no way you could end the meal hungry! Overall, a little far from home but delicious food is here at Socrates! A local little gem we have been eager to try out on a night we don't want to cook. The next gen owners gave the place a fresh, clean and charming facade. We ordered: Roast Lamb: omg! This was so super tender and moist and flavoured just perfectly. The sinewy section around the bones were saturated and cooked in its juices to perfection (droool). Generous portions, came with side of rice, roasted potatoes, classic Greek salad, pita. Keftedes: wasn't sure what to expect for take out meatballs.... but it sure did not disappoint! It was moist but cooked through, and again seasoned just right. Served with a side of tzatziki. Kalamari: who would think take out deep fried would work? But I took the staff's recommendation, and sure was glad I did. Big juicy pieces of squid lightly battered and fried. The lemon and tzatziki cuts any excess oil. Worth a second mention: I often find restaurant food to be too salty, and/or too oily. NOT at Socrates. Everything was thoughtfully seasoned to bring out the taste of the main ingredients. Thank you! These items with tax came to just under $50 and fed 3 hungry adults. Next time I'll add a salad. Decent value. I write this at day#10 of covid 19 (near) lockdown. The owners had an efficient system of taking credit card payment on the phone at time of ordering. I called as I rolled up, and the owner came out, placed the order bagged up on a clean table just outside the doors. Brilliant. Great family run joint, and they are active in the community. I recently discovered Socrates when I had a craving for Greek cuisine. There are a few options in the Burnaby Heights area. Socrates is a take out restaurant with a variety of items to choose from on the menu. We ordered the calamari appetizer, beef souvlaki and Greek ribs. The calamari was fried lightly and tasted great. I noticed they only gave the calamari 'rings' so I was missing the squid tentacles! The beef souvlaki was very flavourful and included 1 skewer over a bed of rice and lemon potatoes. Rice and potatoes were delicious too. My least favourite was the ribs as the texture was a bit too soft for my liking and was a bit greasy. Each entree includes a salad and pita bread. I quite enjoyed the kale Caesar with the crispy chick peas. I would order from here again! read more

We ordered delivery on a Friday around dinner time. Said it was going to be 45 minutes and it came before that. Great thing about this meal is everything went well. From ordering, delivery, what we ordered, food looked good. I need everything to go smoothly after the long work week and we're treating ourselves on a Friday night. We ordered 4 meals and all of us we're very happy. My lamb souvlaki was good all around. Meat had good flavour, rice was cooked perfectly and I love those potatoes. We ordered alot of food and here is the run down: Kalamari - Crispy and tender with great seasoning Saganaki - Perfectly salty and lemony Spanakopita - fresh and delicate feta, not overly feta. The filo, that was beautifully crunchy, was the star of this dish. Very light and clean taste Fresh Made Pitas - buttery pillows Keftedes - moist and full of flavour Garlic Prawns - Good, I think would be better if had eaten right away, but carry out you don't have that luxury. (COVID restrictions) Greek Salad - First time I had a Greek salad that was the right balance of vegetables and dressing. This was very refreshing and seasoned well. Lamb Chops - YES! Very good chicken souvlaki, with a large portion of tender,marinated chicken on top of a huge portion of very tasty rice pilaf. There was enough to eat half of the dish for supper and the other half for lunch the next day. The tzatziki sauce was good, but the flat bread was not the yummy, traditional thin Greek pita style, it was about an inch thick and was dry and tasteless, and looked more like a proofed Western European flat bread. Another person in our group ordered the roast lamb and loved it. It was very tender and tasty, with a sauce, and also was a large portion. With a better flatbread offering, I would rate them a 5. I have ordered take out twice during this pandemic from Socrates, the first time on Easter Sunday and the second time this evening. The quality is consistent and delicious on both occasions. Don't let the small size of their location fool you, Socrates easily serves the best Greek food in Burnaby! Their Kale Caesar salad is amazing, and the lamb shoulder is easily the best I've ever eaten. Try the Keftedes as well, they have wonderful flavour. You can also get a pretty generously sized wrap for about $8, which is one of my favourite choices for a reasonably priced lunch. The menu options here do not disappoint. If you live in the Burnaby Heights, or somewhere close by, you absolutely have to try Socrates. (And if they have the cheesecake in stock, order one for dessert; you won't regret it!) read more

Every time I can make an excuse to get take out, I pop into Socrates. The food is consistently fresh and delicious. And not overpriced! I have never in my life tasted better lamb, or prawns, tzatziki or spanakopita. And I've been to Greece. My favorite thing to order is the kale Caesar salad - give it a try!
