Sausage was too fatty for me but boyfriend loved. Pancakes were good and lots of syrup and butter offered. Meat Lovers Eggs Benny: so much food. Everything in it was excellant and boyfriend gave the hollandaise sauce 10/10. Overall excellant breakfast here. read more

Great breakfast place in St.Albert which doesn't tend to have a lot of variety as it's a small city. I absolutely love their benedicts and find myself constantly ordering them whenever I visit. I also love their cubed potatoes. Personally I think they have the best hash browns compared to other breakfast places I've tried in the past. Their coffee is good and the atmosphere is great. Although they are always busy on the weekends, I've found I've never had to wait long for a table as the flow is steady. The staff is always friendly and the service is great. Creamy mushroom soup was basically an over thickened (could taste some flour chunks) chicken stock with mushrooms added. Salty! Potato and veggies came out cold. Cutlet...came in two thin pieces with gravy on top. One piece was nice. The other was tough and way over cooked. So....they brought new veggies and a hot baked potato. The second cup of coffee was hot. At the end they knocked off $7 on the bill since both of us ordered the exact same thing and had the exact same problem. read more

Great little Mom & Pop family diner. They were voted best breakfast in St. Albert last year and their busy weekend mornings with lines out the door are proof! We ordered and prepaid for take out. When we went to pick it up, staff refused to hand us the food, which was ready and sitting on the counter. Twenty minutes and a number of attempts to get someone to pass us the bag, we demanded to be helped and got our stone cold food. Apologies to the owners of this location. I know this is a staple for some folks in St. Albert. I've tried a couple times as I've wanted to like this restaurant but I did not. People I know talk about the great value they get for their Socrates meal, but I don't see it. My family' has tried to go here on a few occasions and the food was mediocre and the price was on the higher side. My family will go to toast, Cora (which I don't like but my kiddo does) ihop or in Edmonton to hathaways or robins for a breakfast or brunch place. read more

We had Socrates cook up our Christmas dinner complete with all the fixings and 3 pies . One word = AMAZING . So well organized and packaged for 10 people . No dirty pots and pans and no slaving over the stove and spending the day in the kitchen . Instead we had family visit time on Christmas day while the tin foil trays warmed up in teh oven . Lots of left overs and a Lemon Meringue Pie that you would absolutely die for . These folks are the best . Helped us carry it all out to the car on Christmas eve and away we went . We ordered the chicken "souvlaki platter" and the "signature burger." The souvlaki platter came with 4 pieces of stale factory-made pitta bread. The chicken was burnt, dry, and lacked any sort of flavour. The greek salad we ordered with it wasn't even greek salad-- just limp lettuce sprinkled with olives and tomato. My burger was wet. I don't know how else to describe it-- it was dripping when I picked it up. Also, the burger contained an entire chunk of onion(?). The burger itself had flavour, but the texture was honestly disgusting after I bit into it and the entire thing was *dripping.* I wouldn't really care about any of this if I had ordered from a fast food restaurant, but this costed close to $40. I thought Socrates was one of the "fine dining" restaurants in St. Albert, but I was wrong lol. I'm pretty shocked with the horrible quality of the food and I'd definitely encourage people to eat anywhere else. There was no care put into the meal, so yeah i'm pretty disappointed :/ read more

I've been meeting my parents at this restaurant for several years now. It is the brunch hot spot in St. Albert. Every Sunday morning and early afternoon there's a lineup of people eager to eat and socialize. The line may look daunting but the staff are very efficient. Pretty much anything you order on the brunch menu is really good. They also have specials which are worth checking out. I've eaten here for dinner, too and the food is great. They boast the best prime rib in town. The staff are very friendly and efficient. They keep the coffee flowing during brunch. read more

We try to eat here whenever we can but if there is a line we take off. In general the staff is the rudest I have seen in the greater Edmonton region. They always seem so busy and have no patience for the customer. Some of the servers remind me of the "Soup Nazi" from Seinfeld. Upon leaving this morning without ordering the lady ahead of us who was hanging in there said "your lucky if you get a grunt if you ask a question" I always wonder if the owner is present and they think this is acceptable or they just own it and lunatics are running the asylum. Had a great breakfast. I was a little skeptical coming here based on the pictures of the leprechaun cakes in the photos but the breakfast was excellent. It's a great old fashioned diner. I had the signature breakfast and was very satisfied. The pancakes were a nice balance between spongy and fluffy which are my favorite. Hash browns were cubed and cooked perfectly. They didn't seem "house-made" but we're still great. Bacon was a little thin but I've been used to thick Costco bacon at home so it's not a really fair comparison. They have a great diner ambiance and the decor was clean and pleasing. The outside of the building is a bit dated and weathered but don't let its appearance keep you away. All of the staff were professional, fun and very friendly. I haven't had a chance to try lunch and dinner but I'm definitely jonesing for their lasagna! read more

My hubby and I are frequent diners at Socrates for breakfast/bruch/lunch. We go there at least once or twice a month and have always had pretty great service and food quality. This is a place that you would drive by a ton of times and always wonder how the food actually is. It's definitely worth stopping by! My SO always gets the same thing, eggs, bacon, toast and hash browns and he's always impressed with the portion sizes and the quality. I'm more adventurous and have ordered a variety of items off their breakfast menu. My favorite so far are the BCO Eggs Benedict. Love that one! But I've also had the pancakes, scramblers, and recently had their Bacon Cheeseburger. The burger was pretty amazing! Tasted great, the bun was perfectly sized to match the burger (believe it or not, that is important), the ingredients were fresh, lots of cheese and bacon and I would order it again! It was a little bit overcooked, but that's pretty common, so I don't hold that against them. They recently did an interior renovation. Updated the chair covers and table tops so it looks nice. If you go at peak times, you will have to wait, but even when I've gone with 6 people, we've never had to wait more than 20 mins. There isn't a whole lot of staff turnover there either which is nice to see. And they do wonderful catering! (I've ordered some for business meetings). I've read some of the previous reviews, and while I can't speak how a full dinner entree is, I've seen some of the lunch items ordered (sandwiches, burgers, salads) and they look pretty amazing. Socrates is pretty hit & miss. It's been that way at least for the last 5 years. We went for lunch on Saturday around 1:30. The restaurant was fairly full, but no wait for a table. The redheaded hostess who "greeted" us definitely needs some customer service training. I was pretty sure that she hated her job based on her body language, lack of eye contact and no smiling. When she took us to our table and poured my mom her coffee, she spilled the coffee all over my menu. She saw it and said "oops" then walked away. I assumed she was going to get a cloth to wipe it off, but she came back and put my glass of water on the table then walked away again! So, we shared a menu because mine honestly had a pool on it. When the waitress came by to take our order, we had to ask for a cloth to wipe the booth down because it was pretty filthy. I also pointed out the pool of coffee on my menu. she took our order, took the dirty menu away, and seemed to dismiss the request for a cloth as she walked away without acknowledging it. However, she returned promptly with a cloth and offered to wipe it down for us. The waitress was generally pleasant, although she did not check on us during the meal at all, and when she dropped the food off, she didn't ask if we needed anything else. However, she came back to top off the coffee (but even then, did not ask how everything was). The food was delicious and everything was cooked perfectly. And we were sitting close enough to the waitress station that we could have flagged her down if anything was in fact wrong or missing. The blonde hostess who ended up taking my payment was much more pleasant than the first one, and I left the restaurant feeling full and happy. Sadly, this was the best visit we've had here in quite a while, which doesn't say too much :( And because of that, I can't bring myself to give more than 3 stars. But we'll be back. read more

This is my favorite brunch spot in St Albert and even all of Edmonton. It has a classic diner appeal. So classic that me and my brunch guest thought it felt similar to Pulp Fiction diner, and we sat in the same spot! "Hunny Bunny.... All right, everybody be cool, this is a robbery. Any of you f$#@ing pricks move, and I'll execute every muthaf$#@ing last one of ya!" Sooo classic!!! Anyways the food has never let me down so go ahead and order anything you like. I usually only go for brunch or breakfast so don't quote me on the dinners. A few things to remember... Sunday Brunch doesn't last all day but they do have omlettes that go all day. The best thing is the home fries which are crisp on the outside but soft and warm on the inside. Lots of parking, plenty of seating, and the coffee is always nice and hot. It's a very big breakfast menu. I ordered my favourite, the waffles, with one of my besties (we have a long-standing waffle tradition). You can order the waffles as part of a larger breakfast combo with sausage, bacon, hashbrowns, and toast for less than $13. Plus, fresh strawberries and whippped cream on top! Whenever I'm back in my hometown, this is the only spot I go for breakfast, period. read more

Socrates management has lost all comprehension of what it means to please the customer first. This past Fathers day Sunday my wife and I drove 40 minutes passing numerous other restaurants just so I could order their blueberry pancakes that I have enjoyed in the past. We arrive shortly after 1pm and are seated in the 1/2 full restaurant. The waitress takes a long time to come around but eventually shows up and my wife is asked her order first and orders bacon and eggs. Immediately the waitress states we are to late for bacon and eggs we have to order off the lunch/dinner menu. We didn't want lunch we wanted breakfast just like we've had numerous times before on Sunday early afternoon's at Socrates. We decide to leave and end up just down the block at Ricky's and got the breakfast that we wanted. I found it odd that Socrates quit offering breakfast Sunday afternoon's so when I got home I checked their menu online. What I discovered was they do in fact offer bacon and eggs but you can only get them in combination with a waffle or french toast. Price was not the issue for us. If we had been offered that option instead of just saying "we don't serve bacon on eggs" my wife would have just said hold the waffle but that was never offered. Instead of Socrates making $35.00 plus from our order Ricky's instead got it. Not only did Socrates lose the money they lost my loyalty and future business. It boils down to the greed and arrogance of the owners. They don't understand the concept give the customer what they want and they will return time after time. Just moved to the area and was looking for a brunch joint. Was very pleased to find Socrates and really enjoyed the meal. Prices were fair and portions were massive. Good atmosphere and staff we're friendly. My ONLY complaint was the shredded hash browns were more like deep friend French fries and not pan fried shredded potatoes. We had dinner there and I had the veal and my wife had spinach ravioli. Unfortunately the meal was not very good and we left just about all our meal on the plate then we paid and left. The breakfast special until 11 AM on weekdays is great value considering tea that costs $225 or more by itself, or coffee, is included in the $7.25 price for two eggs, sausages or bacon, hash browns and toast. If you order egg whites only, they will literally give you a quantity that is the contents of two eggs without the yolks, so order four eggs if you want the gross quantity of two eggs. The additional eggs I believe are $150 each. Service is acceptable to good, depending on the server. Apparently the server gets your money and they in turn pay the restaurant. read more

We have eaten here several times and have always had good results. It is a great "go to" restaurant when you are not sure what you want to eat as there is great variety on the menu. The portions of the food are generous, it is tasty and fresh, and consistently good. The staff are excellent here. They always seem friendly, and seem to enjoy working there. No complaints at all.
