From my two experiences at Sofia alterations, this place really is awful. Her prices are really expensive especially considering the quality she does. She charged me 25 dollars to cut one inch off a dress and didnot even steam the dress before returning it to me. I received a dress that was completely wrinkled and unfit to wear. Her work is also unimpressive. She seems like a sweet older lady but with those prices I expect some quality and service both of which she lacks. I will not be returning to her ever again. read more

Absolutely awful. After spilling red wine on my bedding set, I immediately brought my set into Sofia's because it was the closest place to my apartment. (The fresher the stain, the easier to get out) I went to pick it up three weeks later. First, Sofia said that she didn't even remember the set at all, saying that it was never brought in. After looking closer at the slip, she said that I had left it too long at her shop and that she had given it away to the Salvation Army. Running around the store, she repeated, "It's not my fault! It's not my fault!" She then miraculously called someone who had it, and told me to come back the next day to pick it up. The next day, I came and she said that even though I had paid in full when I dropped it off, I still owed her $30 for something.. There was no point in arguing and I was already frustrated and just wanted my bedding back, so I begrudgingly gave her $30 more on top of the $50 that I had given her when dropping it off. When I got the set home, I inspected the set and found that the stains hadn't been removed... A waste of $80 and a huge amount of frustration. I now have to buy a new duvet cover and sheet set.. I would not recommend this place. read more

Yes, the woman is very sweet. But it's not that endearing when she has shrunken one pair of wool, dry clean only pants, and says there is nothing she can do about the other pair that ARE NOT YOURS. After going through other dry cleaning jobs and finidng my pants among them, she refused to give me the correct pants for three more days. Finally, she gave me the correct pants after much haggling and two visits to her shop. Don't waste your money here. read more

Hey to everyone who posted. Not only is she a sweet lady and very customer friendly, but she happens to be my grandmother. I appreciate the wonderful posts you guys/girls are mentioning about her and her services but for the people who have had some bad experiences; I apologize for that. She is my father's mother and my parents are divorsed. I cannot beleive after all she has been through she still even has the ability to operate a business all by herself at the age. She just lost the live of her life my grandfather last year and it was hard for everyone. I could not imagine what it was for her and this was the first lost of the family for all of us so it was tramatic for a lot of people. Long story short here people is that every person has a story and it is not up to us as people to judge. She may be sweet and comforting on the outside but who knows she very well may just be suffering and hurt on the inside but needs to be able to provide for the rest of the family. She is old and has been working with her hands for years please remember that. If you do not like the service call me 617- 571- 7098. I will come down there and try to help her out. Sofia is absolutely wonderful! I came in with 6 suits that didn't quite fit and she helped me figure out which to tailor and which weren't worth it any more. I've never written a Yelp review before but I'm signing up just to write this one. I'm new to the neighborhood and thought I was lucky to have an alternations & shoe repair place in walking distance to my house. I thought I was even more lucky when I went in to drop off a very pricy cocktail dress for hemming and was only charged $20 (up front, which I thought was odd). Sofia, if that's who I dealt with, was sugar sweet and I also left two pairs of boots for repair. One pair of boots needed a sewing repair as they are suede moccasins w/ a simple split seam and the other pair needed complete resoling as the soles has begun to separate from the shaft of the boot. Sofia told me she would have to check with her shoe repair people about the cost of the boot repairs, took my phone number and said she would call me and let me know the price for the repairs before okaying them. I was given a paid in full receipt for the dress and simple stub w/ a number on it for the boots. Six days went by and I never heard about the quote for the boots so I called to inquire with the number I had been given. Sofia not only had no idea what I was talking about but said she had no such number on record and I would need to come in. I obliged thinking all was still fine and being there in person would clarify things. I could see the boots there on the shelf when I arrived and pointed them out to her, she retrieved them for me and told me I owed her $18 for the repairs, I thought it was odd that I had never been called to be informed before the repairs were done as discussed but I figured that was a great deal so whatever. NO. I took the boots out of the bag Sofia handed them to me in and discovered that NEITHER pair had had the repairs I requested performed. Instead a very cheap pair of heel treads had been added to the pair that needed resoling despite the fact that the gapingly obvious separation of the sole from the shaft had not been at all addressed. Sofia was so sweet I figured it was all a misunderstanding and told her I'd happily pay the $18 if that price went towards the actual repairs I had requested which were yet to be done. SH*T HIT THE FAN. Sofia told me I was "a liar" and that "God doesn't like cheats." Um excuse me??? I tried my best to be polite and told her we must have had a misunderstanding and that again I would happily pay the $18 toward the repairs I had requested but that I had no intention of paying for a heal repair that I had not only not asked for but that wasn't even in need given that the WHOLE soles of the boots clearly needed to be replaced. Already long story short; Sofia yelled at me, called me a liar and a cheat some more, I was totally taken aback and confused and said I would just take my dress (already paid for) and boots and leave. She gave me the dress and I got the heck out of there! I literally had to go home and cool off and call my mother and talk it out because I was so surprised and upset. I finally consoled myself that at least I had my beautiful dress back in one piece...NOPE. I took the dress (that had been knee length when I brought it in and which I had VERY clearly specified should only be hemmed 2 inches) out of the plastic to discover that Sofia had hemmed what looked to me like a foot off the dress. I put it on and it's so short that unless I want to change careers and become a street walker I'm out of luck. I'll have to throw it away. She seemed like a lovely person but I feel like I either got the worse service ever or was a victim on a complete scam. read more

A few pairs of jeans looked like they'd been through WW3 from wearing them too much, but for the price I paid I didn't want to part with them yet. $20 a pair and they're good as new again. I was searching high and low for a good place to get slacks hemmed, so I thought I'd pass on what I found. Sofia (the owner) is incredibly friendly. Strangely, this is the only place I've been to for hemming where they didn't have me try on the pants and pin them to measure. She just asked my inseam and outer seam length and measured a pair I happened to be wearing. So I would be prepared for that. I was scepticle/worried, but they actually turned out a perfect length and a good job with the hemming itself. You do pre-pay (cash only) which I found a little odd, but the price was good (like $15 a pant). Also a little odd, its the only time I've had someone hem pants and not press them afterwards before I picked them up. Not a big deal, but you may have to ask for that (so for those small reasons she's a 4/5 since I feel it is customary to measure and pin on the person and press afterwards). Oh and it was pretty timely: done in a couple days. read more

Sophia did a beautiful job of tailoring a bridesmaid dress for me, and on incredibly short notice to boot. The dress fit like a dream, and her warm, grandmothery demeanor made me feel like a princess. On a Tuesday night I started packing for an out-of-state wedding, and I put on my bridesmaid dress to choose the right shoes. To my horror, the dress -- despite having been altered already -- was far too loose. The likelihood that this strapless dress was going to fall far below the level of propriety during the wedding was extremely high. I had to leave for the wedding straight from work on Thursday, so I started to go into a full panic. I frantically searched Yelp for tailors near work, found Sophia, and headed there first thing Wednesday morning. Not only did she reassure me that she could fix the dress by my 4pm Thursday departure, she was welcoming and kind and made me feel like an old friend. The price was very reasonable (less than I paid for the first alteration), and she dismissed my offer to pay a premium for the expedited service with a smile and a shake of the head. My dress was ready and waiting when I returned to pick it up, and I made it up and down the aisle and boogied on the dance floor without any fear of a Janet Jackson-esque wardrobe malfunction. read more

Sofia and her and her son Dimitri were extremely kind to me. I went in a for an alteration on my pants and she was very quick in terms of fixing it. Sofia is the sweetest women you will ever meet. Her alteration made it look like a factory repair. The cost was also extremely reasonable, especially for those who are students. Unfortunately, she is very problematic and very unkind! Today, there were three people with me. She received my shoes one week ago an told me she would call me if she could not repair my shoes. I needed them! She never called me within the week and I went to receive my shoes today in the afternoon. She told me not to get back my shoes from repair and I had to wait. (?). I am very busy person, can't go to get back my shoes "many times" during the day. In spite of this fact, I did since I needed my shoes. In the evening, I went back to receive my shoes and SHE GAVE ME MY SHOES WITHOUT REPAIRING! I was in shock! I asked her why she did not call me during the week if she could not repair them. She was arrogant, extremely unkind and all she said to me was it was impossible to repair those shoes as I saw it! (??!!!!). There were a lady there with me. She requested "her receipt" after making her payment. The lady (Sophia?) resisted to give her receipt and then told her to give it only one time. She was surprised at this response -of course- and told her whenever she makes her payment, Sophia should give her receipt. Sophia (?, I dont know her name the old lady working there, Sophia ? is this her name?) told her to give her receipt only for one time and if she insists on receipt, she should go to another repair store -in Brookline?-..I could not believe that and these conversation.
