It's quite rare to see a sit-down Puerto Rican spot around here (I've mostly only had food truck versions across the country). I'm happy to have found Sofrito! The place is nicely decorated and spotless, and the staff were friendly throughout. While I don't claim to be an expert in Puerto Rican food, overall the flavors were excellent. We started with the empanadillas, which were crispy and hot. The canoas were also delicious. The plantains were perfectly ripe and sweet, and the meat filling was flavorful and provided a nice savory balance. For entrees, we all went with combo plates. Each comes with pickled onions and a small side salad (kind of like a pico de gallo), plus your choice of rice, like white rice, tostones, maduros, or seasoned rice like arroz mamposteao or arroz con gandules. The pollo was moist with a really nice aromatic seasoning on top. The pernil asado was tender with crispy skin. The bistec encebollado was my favorite. The beef was very tender, tangy from the vinegar marinade (it actually reminded me a bit of Filipino adobo), and full of flavor. Both seasoned rice options were yummy, though we all slightly preferred the arroz mamposteao as it was a bit more flavorful. We finished with flan de queso, which tasted fresh and wasn't overly sweet. Street parking was easy even on a Saturday evening. I'd go there all the time if I lived nearby! read more

Came here for lunch a few weeks ago, since I was in the area. Didn't know what to expect because I was the only patron in the restaurant. The decor of the restaurant was cute. I had the mofongo (with the garlic sauce) with the carne frita (fried beef). I'm Puerto Rican and the carne frita was probably the best I've ever had. It was crispy but not hard and it was very tender and tasty. And the garlic sauce ... OMG, so delicious. I also got chicken and pizza empanadas and a plantain soup to go. Both were pretty good too. The waiter was nice and attentive and made good suggestions. My only complaints are that I had to pay for parking and I thought the food was a little pricey for PR food/lunch. But considering the portions were decent, that there aren't a ton of PR restaurants in MD and that it was delicious, I would go back there if in the area again. read more

This place came recommended from a friend who shares a love for amazing authentic food, and I'm so glad we chose this restaurant when we visited Hagerstown. There was parking right out front. Best Puerto Rican Restaurant in Hagerstown, the entire staff here is super friendly and extremely attentive. Make sure you make reservations we were very lucky that it wasn't fully booked today. The place has lots of room for large parties, it's family friendly and also great for a Date night with your loved one. For food I loved it all, from the tostones, empanadas and chacaron wow it was so delicious!! I felt like I was back in Puerto Rico again. This was a wonderful restaurant. I was so excited to go and experience Puerto Rican cuisine. My mother is from PR and we were just there in June. We ordered the chicken empanadas, the chicken was minced but had a good flavor you got 2 per order. We also ordered the Relleno de papa there were 3 and very fresh and delicious. The potato's had a nice crust and we're still creamy. We also ordered Tostone, I can't remember how many we got I think 5. They were delicious too. We thought we may share a meal, but after all of the appetizers were completely filled and brought some home.. The mojito was tasty with fresh lime ‍. As a Puerto Rican from N.Y.C., i can attest that the food here is authentic. I had the pernil (roast pork) with rice and beans and my wife had the mofongo (fried mashed plantain with shrimp) with garlic sauce. The food is delicious and full of flavor. It took about 30 minutes for the food to arrive. Service was friendly and courteous. There is also a wine cabinet on the premises for those wishing to have a cocktail. The dining area is small but comfortable. We found the dining area and bathrooms were clean. There is ample metered street parking. Street parking is free on the weekends. The restaurant is conveniently located around the corner from the Maryland Theater for those looking for an entertaining evening. I would have given this restaurant 5 stars if it wasn't because of the higher than normal pricing, as well as the portion sizes being on the small for the price. Service was ok for being understaffed. Out of many items on the menu, including several drink items. This made their menu worthless and required asking, "Tell us what you do have." What Sofrito had was a very short list of items to select. What was served was ok at best! Lastly, it is very cold outside the night we are here, and uncomfortably cool inside temperature-wise. Very friendly service, waitress was fantastic. Pernil was delicious, soft savory flavor. My steak sandwich was not bad. Great music at a great volume setting. Sofrito Puerto Rican cuisine was a delight. Six of us went there for lunch one day last week. The artistry around the restaurant made us feel as though we were actually in Puerto Rico. Each of us ordered a dish and cut it into six pieces so we shared it and each dish was better than the last one. We were not in a hurry so the service just suited us very well. Let me start off by saying this place is a nice size restaurant with a full bar. Very upscale looking with beautiful decor everywhere, they did not miss with aesthetics here. I believe this is family owned restaurant and staff was dressed top tier, I definitely love this! The menu had alot of choices and options to choose so we decided to get a mix of a few things. Our food came out fresh and extremely hot! Up to now, I was pleased but sadly once I started to eat my food, my smile turned upside down. All the food lack FLAVOR & Salt. I've been to a lot of Puerto Rican restaurants and never ever tasted food that lack seasonings. The food looked AMAZING but I can't lie, food didn't taste authentic and was missing a lot of soul. I'm so disappointed because this meal took me for a turn. Honestly, the reason I gave 2 stars is because the service, people and place was beautiful but again the food wasn't great. What made matters worst is I paid over $100 for food that I barely ate because I wasn't pleased at all. Oh I didn't even order dessert but with what paid I didn't wanna spend more money. I always eat ALL of my food and here I could barely eat 1/4 of my plate. Others with me felt the same way and didn't even wanna take the leftovers home. My first attempt to provide a review timed out so bear with me... I loved this place for the food, atmosphere and service. I know they opened within the past 1-2 months and encourage you to stop by and enjoy the experience. I haven't had such wonderful Mofongo since my last visit to PR. The friendliness of the owner, Chef and other staff made this more than a great meal, it was a great experience and nice way to introduce my mom to the culture. I had Pollo Mofongo and my mom had the snapper. The serving sizes are plenty and the food was so delicious. I was in the mood for a home cooked Puerto Rican meal . I found this place went in ordered roast pork with rice and peas and 3 potatoes ball with meat to go . When I got home to eat the roast pork was dark and dry almost like it was put the oven multiple times it was shriveled dry crunchy. I was so disappointed everything else was to my satisfaction when I called the restaurant to complain about my meal. They apologized and told me if I ever come in they'll give me a discount mind you I paid $50 plus a five dollar tip for the gentleman taking my order. I will not recommend this place to anyone Americans that eat their probably don't know the difference in how the food should be, but I am born and raised in Puerto Rico. This is our second time trying this place. Me and my bf were craving authentic Puerto Rican food and the first time we came it was really good. We got the chicken mofongo with the garlic sauce and a side of rice. This time we got the same exact thing; HOWEVER, it was AWFUL! The cook who made it needs to actually COOK the food. Aside from everything having no flavor, all the chicken was RAW. I realized as I was chewing my food, that the chicken chunks were VERY gummy in texture and had a weird/off taste and absolutely NO SEASONING at all. So I started looking at the chicken and of course it was all raw on the inside. I stopped eating it all immediately cause I didn't want to get sick from the raw chicken and since it was mixed in with everything, I'm afraid everything else was already contaminated as well. Our meals together were $50 and it all basically went to waste because it was literally NOT edible. The rice was the only thing edible even though it lacked flavor as well. NOTHING like the first time we tried it. Definitely won't be coming back after that experience. Only reason why I'm giving two stars instead of zero is because the first time we came, everything was cooked and seasoned well and it was actually good. I celebrated my birthday here today. The welcoming was amazing, we were a family of 9 and our server was very diligent and respectful. Everything from our appetizer to the main course and my desert was delicious. The presentation of each plate was well done. The restaurant has a very nice rustic vibe like The Old San Juan restaurants. I felt like home and the chef and his associates were very friendly and attentive. One and Done! There was table of eight and my group of six with 2 wait staff and a cook. The service was slow...real sloooooow I ordered the marinated fried pork and pigeon rice. the rice was tasty but the pork was not edible. The pork pieces were fibrous and difficult to chew. I tried three and gave up. When asked if I enjoyed my meal, I told him what I stated in the previous sentence and the waiter just shrugged his shoulders. Loved it! I was looking for a place that was open on Christmas Eve and they were accommodating and welcoming. When I called to check if they were open, someone picked up on the first ring and let me make a reservation. The service was great, the food was delicious, and they were thoughtful enough to show us a different exit that had no stairs for my mother's walker. The wait staff was exceptionally kind and attentive, especially for a day I'm sure they would have preferred to be home with family (thank you so much!!). I have been at this restaurant a couple of times and done take out a couple of other times. The service and food are terrific. First time I had the steak with onions, that was delicious. Second time I had mofongo. I am sure every style is great. The empanadas are very tasty. The combination of spices they put in their food are unique. Can't wait to go again. I was a bit disappointed with the taste and quality of the food. I must agree with a previous review regarding flavor. When they brought the bacalaitos out my mood totally changed! If you've ever eaten a bacalaito "cod fritter" you know it's not supposed to look like that! They looked like burnt pancakes! Definitely made on a griddle not fried. Tasted like pure dough very disappointed! The mofongo lacked flavor, sauce and was super dry. They've only been opened a few months I am hope they can turn things around. My wife and I ate here for our wedding anniversary tonight. The employees were very attentive and professional, and they had tasty Puerto Rican cuisine. Their drink special, coquito, is one of my favorite drinks that I hope they have more often! We had the sample tapas platter, which included classic Mayo Ketchup with some sort of spice that gave a nice twist. The ribs and chicken wings were falling off the bone- soft. yum! The mofongo with churrasco and cream sauce (they have a choice of criolla, cheese or garlic sauce) was amazing. My wife is Puerto Rican and between her and visiting the island myself, I can tell you that not only is the food amazing, but delicious!! had the red snapper off the grill and the wife had the chicken mofungo. Never had Hispanic food? Thats fine. you'll love this food! So good that my wife and I asked for to go dishes for our lunches for work tomorrow.
