Taiyaki is a delicious Japanese street food. A fish shaped pastry stuffed with filling like read bean paste & custard. In the warmer months the taiyaki are also stuffed with soft serve ice cream. This street food has become popular in the USA with dedicated taiyaki ice cream spots popping up, and we finally have a shop in Alaska that serves this delectable treat. Softer opened at the end of December in the Diamond center food court. I went to check them out in February, and the taiyaki were fresh, crispy, and had a decent amount of filling. Now the taiyaki wasn't the same consistency as the ones I had in Japan, but it's not really fair to compare things in Alaska to their country of origin. The texture wasn't 100% correct, but it was pretty nicely crispy, and not overly chewy. I had heard from a few other people that when they went the texture wasn't correct & too chewy so consistency may be a bit of an issue, but they are a new business to that can be rectified. The soft serve ice cream was also very good. I ordered 2 "upside down" Taiyaki ice creams which comes with choice of 2 toppings. You can just order a Taiyaki filled with ice cream which doesn't come on a cup, or the Taiyaki pastry on its own without ice cream. If you're not feeling the Taiyaki you can also just get the soft serve ice cream, a milkshake, or a snow bowl (this looks like a variation of bingsu). I ordered chocolate soft serve with a Nutella filled Taiyaki topped with sprinkles, and a matcha/chocolate swirl soft serve with an ube filled Taiyaki topped with Oreo & graham cracker crumbs. The portion size on the soft serve was good for the price ($7). The chocolate ice cream was standard chocolate soft serve, but I really liked the Nutella taiyaki. The matcha ice cream actually had a strong, and not overly artificial matcha tea flavor. Next time I won't get it swirled with chocolate as the chocolate overpowered the matcha. I don't know if I'd get the ube filled taiyaki again. The ube filling was pretty artificial so it's not my preference. The toppings were also fairly sparse, but that doesn't really matter to me. Overall it's a great treat. Service was quick when we went. There was no line, and you just order at a kiosk & the person makes what you order. It's located right in the mall food court by the ice rink so if you're looking for ambiance it's not really going to be this place. I definitely will be back to get some Taiyaki ice cream again, and maybe try their snow bowls. Excited to have something different in Anchorage! This place is definitely a good spot next time you want some soft serve ice cream. read more

New Korean soft serve ice cream shop in the dimond center food court, this spot used to be one of the Auntie Ann's. They have Ube, milk, matcha, chocolate soft serve, or you can swirl milk/Ube or matcha/chocolate together. We got Ube and Milk. The Ube flavor was very light in the ice cream. The milk tasted like vanilla but with less flavor. We got one of the Taiyaki cones, filled with Ube. This ube had more flavor and was darker purple color. The dough was very soft, chewy and good. It held up well from the ice cream. I would definitely get one again. They also have cold brew floats, Korean shaved ice, and Taiyaki filled with different flavored paste. They also make the cones fresh right in front of you. There is a touch screen where you can order from, that machine is card only. You can also pay with cash at the regular register too. When your order is ready they have a number system that shouts out your number just like the new corn dog place also does across the way. Your receipt has the number of your order on it. read more

Stopped in again the other day (forgot to check in)... Service was only slightly faster, but I really enjoyed what I got. It was a matcha soft-serve in a bowl with an ube filled fishy sprikled with matcha. Loved that it wasn't too sweet. Cafe was full so I sat in the ice rink and watched the family skate. This review is for the taiyaki and soft serve. I haven't tried the shaved ice even though I would love to; it's just such a steep price! This place is located in the food court right by the ice skating rink in Dimond Center. There is a self order tablet, which was probably not the most efficient because it generated a very long line. Would've been helpful to have at least 2 self order tablets... The orders themselves came out super quick though! I got the matcha soft serve with a red bean taiyaki. The ice cream texter is super smooth and creamy. I tried my husband's ube ice cream and it was a bit on the sweet side for me but still good flavor. The taiyaki has nice crunch on the outside with mochi texture on the inside; just the way I like it! Will definitely be back for the taiyaki and ice cream. This place was great! They offer some very popular soft serves i am use too. Love the Ube!!!! So good! It's in the mall i know strange but we went to get a corn dog and then got some soft serve before. Staff was friendly and easy to work with. Really use the self serve they are then just going to make and hand off to you. The place it self hasn't be something for long so i hope they last. If they don't please just try outside of the mall. PSA - Don't come at 8:35 because they close at 8:40 apparently and you will not be able to get Taiyaki. The staff informed us we could only order soft serve in a cup because they were closing in 5 minutes. If they had told me they shut the grill down early to clean I can understand that.....but to keep telling me you close at 8:40 after we looked up posted hours. Stopped by while at the mall to get around to trying. We had the taiyaki with Nutella and custard, and both were delicious. They are made fresh, and come out warm and soft. The price is also right, at 4 for 10$. It always makes me happy when something new opens, and I hope the best for them going forward! read more

Showed up at 8:10 PM and the employees argued whether or not they even wanted to take my order. After they figured it out, I was met with a deep sigh and an employee who refused to say anything.
