I went into this store wanting the pair of Danskos I saw in the window. The salespeople were just so snarky - with me and with the other customers in the store that I just couldn't do it. I hear this is a woman owned business, which I really want to support, but they were so customer unfriendly that I am going to have to buy my shoes online (I tried two other high end walking shoe stores in the area, but they didn't have the style I want). When I am going to spend $120 on shoes, I would like the interaction to feel like a good one, not like I was annoying or disturbing someone. read more

Today I went in to try several pair of La Canadienne boots. I have to be picky about shoe support due to my weak, wimpy feet :(. The woman helping me was happy to let me try on the boots with their inner soles (since I hadn't brought my orthodics with me). She was completely patient and understanding when I said I would like to come back with my orthodics to try them on. I was in there for about 40 minutes and NEVER felt pressured to buy. It is great to know they carry a large array of cute/supportive shoes and that they have the inner soles on hand is a huge selling point to me. I will return! read more

Because the last yelp reviews were so poor, I hesitated to visit this shoe store. Let me tell you, Chrissy, Kim and Milani were all wonderful to everyone in the store! They were honest if something didn't look or fit right, they were friendly and seemed as if they understood the importance of good customer service. Absolutely the best customer service along with amazing shoe knowledge. Manager Miranda is a shoe genius! I took the advice of a friend and went to Shoes on Solano for shoes. Even though it was crazy busy, I felt like I was the only person in the store. The woman who helped me was also helping another person at the same time and we traded stories about our various foot problemss while we both tried on lots of cute shoes. The sales woman was extremely attentive to both of us and I walked out with 2 pairs. I've been in stores with a lot less customers competing for attention of a few sales people but I've never felt more taken care of. Some of the selection wasn't my style, but I found some cute flats that I love. I will definitely be back. read more

Really, really, really appreciated the staff at this shoe shop. Most shoe shops of this kind (comfort, high quality), aren't staffed with the friendliest and caringest of reps. But I was really impressed with how nice the gals were here. Emily was the one who I had the pleasure of receiving help from. She was very knowledgable about shoe fitting and what kinds of insoles to buy for your shoe. She knew about Danksos and how they were built and what to do to get the proper fit. As a lady with small, narrow, and delicate feet, I can't tell you how great it is to know that there are people who can give you more than just shoe sales help. It's above and beyond. I LOVE this store, have had nothing but amazing service (and I worked retail for a long time, I am a little picky about good customer service)! The selection is great and the prices are more than competitive. The employees have offered to make special orders on more than one occasion, even before I've asked!! Shoes on Solano 2 - just two doors down from their other location - is a great place to buy shoes for kids. On first glance, it doesn't look like they have a huge selection, but today we left there with 2 pairs which my daughter deemed "perfect." And that is saying a lot considering my daughter. This is the second time we have bought shoes there that my daughter has fallen in love with. Their shoes are very high quality and also comfortable for kids. Jessica works very well with kids - is very gentle and speaks to them at their level. She is also very patient and VERY knowledgeable about shoes and children's feet. I took my girlfriend from Sweden to both recently. She is an artist and has beautiful style, but is shopping averse. She found items at both shoes on Solano and Lava 9 that she loved instantly. Shoes on Solano has THE BEST customer service. Bought some flats in summer that I wore judiciously since I love them so much. Recently put them on and noticed the leather was peeling. I happened to be wearing them while browsing at SOS and Emily (who sold me the shoes) and I were chatting about them not holding up very well. I thought it was just going to be my loss. Oh no... Emily contacted the company (All Black) and they are either replacing the shoes or, if they cannot find another pair for me, I get full store credit! I did not expect that at all. Shoes on Solano has a terrific selection and the staff is extremely helpful without being pushy, at all. Erin helped me, and she was incredibly knowledgeable about which shoes would work best with my orthodics and didn't seem irritated once when I wanted to try on half the shoes in the store! Prior to coming here, I went to Next Step just down the street, where I didn't find anything I liked, and the staff wasn't particularly friendly or helpful. On the other hand, after visiting Shoes on Solano, I walked away with 5 pairs of shoes! I only wish it was a little closer to the freeway, so I could stop by more often! read more

I like this store for its selection. In a small space they manage to show a lot of different shoes and still make it easy to walk around as you try them out. Over the years I've grown used to the spotty customer service. On my very first visit some years ago I was not even greeted or ever acknowledged by any of the staff. I sent in a complaint directly to the store and when I tried again I was immediately greeted. Sometimes the customer service is great, and sometimes it's hard just to make eye contact with anyone who is working there. I do appreciate not being suffocated by too much attention but this is a bit too hands off. I like the shoes so it's worth it to try to engage someone. If there were a similar store in my neighborhood with consistently excellent customer service I would go there. read more

Although I have never been to this shop myself, my mother-in-law has been going for years at this point, and recently had a wonderful experience with Tamsin and asked that I post her review for her on Yelp. Here are her thoughts: Tamsin is patient, with a delightful wry sense of humor. She was able to fit my size 35, double E width foot with a very high arch coupled with short toes and a narrow heel. Usually I am a shoe salesperson's nightmare. I also need shoes I can wear to a job that requires a lot standing so the shoes must be very comfortable and somewhat professional. I saw right away that Tamsin understood and that she had an encyclopedic knowledge of the lines the store carries and what was in stock. Size 35 is rarer than hen's teeth. Tamsin knew which size 36 models ran short which helped expand my meager options. She combined just the right amount of attentiveness with giving me space and time to make my decisions. I felt neither pressured nor rushed. For several years I have made trips from the North Bay specifically for shoes! While Shoes on Solano has good salespeople overall, Tamsin stands out. I tend to go through phases of finding too many shoes I can't live without here and not finding any; but since money is limited, I guess I should appreciate the times when their selection doesn't exactly meet my taste. (There tends to be a lot of Dansko and Dansko-style/bulky shoes which is not my style). What I love about this store is the friendly, helpful, well informed sales women; that the shoes are all high quality, comfortable, yet stylish; and that it's here in my neighborhood. I'm not a fan of internet shopping but have checked prices on shoes I loved but couldn't afford and found that their prices were right inline with Zappos and I could actually try them on before I bought them, have them right away and keep my money in my community. Great shoes, usually great staff but after yesterday, I'm not going back. Bought a pair of shoes for $170, walked out in them and an hour later, came back to exchange for another size. Staff wasn't nice about this at all, commenting about the mud in the shoes, processed the exchange without a word. I offered for them to keep the box, they said "they are non-returnable without the box, " stamped my receipt with "final sale, no return" and when I said "Oh, in that case I'd like my box back." The reply was "Well, we actually don't accept returns if shoes have been worn outside, but she made an exception for you." Really unpleasant experience. I couldn't believe it. read more

there were three salespeople when i walked in. not ONE bothered to say hello to me even as i stood next to a salesperson at the cash register. no hello means no profits from me. saying hello is effortless! yup, it's that simple. you want to compete with online stores like zappos,then provide some damn customer service! AND i was there for more than 30 seconds, so your 30 second rule does not apply to this situation. i would have gladly bought a pair of danskos but after being ignored, i was happy to avoid spending a penny at your store. i placed my order online with zappos.com i regret even walking into your store. there's no need to try and contact me to explain. your shoe collection isn't anything special nor are you competitive in pricing. how you stay in business with such rude service is beyond me! read more

Shoes on Solano designs shoes, as well as selling them. I recently bought their Sole Terra Alameda Boot, in red, for a five-week trip to Italy, during which I walked about six miles each day. I have had issues with my feet, and wasn't sure I was going to be able to walk that much but--thanks to these boots--the trip turned out great. The boots were the only shoe I wore for the whole trip, and they were amazing: they never slipped even in the rain on marble or cobblestones or tiles. The laces never came untied even after hours of pounding the pavement. One reason I bought them was that it was claimed they were water resistant, and they were: they got wet and muddy almost to the top, dried out after a few hours and ended up looking like new. The soft leather was kind to my ankles. The shoes were so comfortable, even on uneven payment--at the end of the day, instead of rushing to pull them off as I usually do with boots, I was perfectly happy to keep them on. They looked great, so I could wear them to a nice restaurant as well as slogging through the November streets. These boots are great! read more

Went to Shoes on Solano with a pair of Dansko clogs that have a cracked sole, about 15 months old, but in great shape. The lady behind the counter told me that they are only supposed to last one year, and was generally pretty rude, looking at me as I was begging or wasting her time. It just didn't seem right that a $100+, with a good reputation, would only last one year, so I called Dansko and they will replace my clogs asap. So much for helping a local business. The lady behind the counter will be happy to know she won't have to see me ever again. read more

I had never shopped here before, my usual shoe shopping haunts are Nordstroms or on-line. I had been looking for a particular style of Dansko clog and was pleasantly surprised to find they had both styles, in the color I wanted. The staff let me browse even before I decided to try on the shoes. As I was leaving, I spotted the sale rack, and picked up these really cute flats that would have cost me twice as much as Nordstroms. Overall, very pleased. read more

Shoes on Solano is THE PLACE for shoes! They have a great selection of fun and stylish shoes yet comfortable! My favorite pair from here are my Gentle Souls purple boots! I get compliments every time I wear them! I'm amazed at their variety of other comfort brands too. They have a very large selection for such a small boutique-like-store! They also have HOBO, which I love! I can't get enough of their little clutch wallets. Contrary to some of their other reviews, I have always had pleasant and cheerful experiences with the staff here. I'm not sure where those other people are going but it must not be the same place (not to mention how inappropriate and class-less it is to drop F bombs in a Yelp review...)? They actually have customer service which a lot of other shoe stores these days are lacking. This is my favorite shoe shop in the SF Bay Area. They always have a great selection of fashionable shoes that are also very comfortable, in a variety of price points. On the two days I went in recently, there were several staff people present so they were able to provide me undivided attention even though there were others in the store, and they are so helpful! Julie helped me recently on two separate days and she is so sweet, accommodating, knowledgeable about the shoes, friendly and efficient!
