MY FAMILY REQUESTEd SONG AFTER SONG AND KEPT GETTING THE SAME RESPONSE "oh no we don't know that one " ... at the end, my family stopped requesting due to them not knowing any of the songs. Him and his team play whatever they liked or knew apparently. 3) The worst attitude ever ! They did not present themselves and they just kept giving each other attitude the whole time. So unprofessional! 4) On that day of, Fidel messaged and called me at 9:40am to complain about the schedule time that he was supposed to arrive. My coordinator had reached out to him previously to go over the time and he had agreed to 5-7pm with no problem. But he decided that the morning of my wedding was a good time to communicate with us about the schedule. Making me have a panic attack. & ALL FOR NOTHING him & his team were late. This place has both steps and an ADA-accessible ramp leading to the entrance. Since I'm currently recovering from a knee injury and can't bend my leg easily, I took the ramp. Even though the ramp and stairs meet at the exact same door, the guards were incredibly rude and forced me to walk back down the ramp and take the stairs just because that's where they happened to be standing. It made zero sense and was totally unnecessary. On the bright side, the inside of the club is really nice and clean. There are plenty of tables and comfy padded booths, and the dance floor has decent space depending on who is playing. The waitstaff was pleasant, and the bathrooms were clean (the bathroom attendant was super nice, and they even sell snacks and candy in there). They have a lot of security roaming around inside too while I didn't interact with them directly, they didn't exactly vibe as friendly. Overall, cool inside, but management really needs to train their front door security on basic courtesy and accessibility.

Cinco de Mayo is not when Mexico declared independence (much less won its independence). Rather, it commemorates an important & surprising victory at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Outnumbered by the occupying French Army 2 to 1, the Mexican Army won a stunning military victory at Puebla, ushering in the beginning of the end of European colonialism in Mexico. While we celebrate Cinco de Mayo as a celebration of all Mexican culture, May 5th is a fairly subdued day in most of Mexico. Pueblan cuisine is often served at family dinner tables throughout Mexico on May 5th to commemorate the battle, with an emphasis on Moles (particularly the Mole Pablano). I'll freely admit I only recently learned of all of this in recent years and probably should've paid closer attention in my Spanish language classes. Now that you've all gotten your free history lesson for the day, let's talk about Phoenix's Cinco de Mayo event. No doubt you've seen or been to a number of Cinco de Mayo parties or celebrations if you've spent any appreciable time here in the valley. In America's fiercely capitalistic society its no surprise when you see bars, restaurants, & clubs of all types commemorate the day with a big party, sombreros, margaritas, chips & salsa, & all the other usual suspects. Now that I'm a little more up on my Mexican history than in years past, I've wanted to try & do Cinco de Mayo in a way that's a little more authentic. I had hopes that Phoenix's official Cinco de Mayo festival near City Hall would provide just the authenticity I was looking for, as I'd been down to this same area for the Phoenix Tamale Festival during Christmas season & loved it (fantastic event if you've never been to it). This year's event was (oddly) held on a Sunday, two days after the 5th. Did the event meet my expectations? Admission for the event this year was just $5 in advance & $10 at the door. The festival takes up about 5 city blocks, mostly along Washington Street between 1st & 4th Avenues. There were a sizable number of vendors for this year's event, although the food vendors were a little disappointing (more on that in a moment). In addition, there was a live music stage, a classic car display area (including some sick low riders), a children's play area with blow up slides & bounce houses, & even a Lucha Libre wrestling ring. Very family friendly event & I saw a large number of families here with their kids. Logistically, the event was well run with plenty of seating, plenty of trash & recycling receptacles, plenty of portapotties, plenty of police patrolling the festival so everyone was safe, & for the most part plenty of room to move about Washington Street. My biggest disappointment however had to be the vendors on hand. As with a lot of festivals I've been to in the valley, cultural festivals are often a cross cultural mishmash with some distinctly American influences. This was particularly true of the food vendors. While there were more than enough food vendors to choose from at the festival (I counted at least 20), only 4 or 5 were serving truly legit Mexican cuisine. And while those Mexican vendors sold many of the reliable Mexican standbys (tacos, quesadillas, burritos, horchata, etc.) I was disappointed that I didn't see any vendors selling items like moles, lengua, tripas, tortas, menudo & other unique traditional offerings. I had $20 to spend & got a fair number of items for the money. To start I spent $10 for a street taco trio (pollo, pastor, & carne asada) as well as a horchata. I then went to a Mexican food truck for a large plain quesadilla for $5. Finally, I finished it off by spending $5 for a GIANT Chamoyada Raspado (basically shaved ice with a sweet & spicy sauce). I wasn't totally full in the end, but I was satisfied. So I guess Phoenix's official Cinco festival pretty much follows along the lines of what you'd probably expect at pretty much any Americanized Cinco de Mayo festival. If you're looking for the Mexican cuisine you've grown up with in the U.S. as well as Mariachi music & a family friendly atmosphere, you'll probably enjoy the Phoenix festival. If you're looking for something approaching a truly traditional Puebla style celebration of May 5th as I was, you'll leave wondering if its even possible to find it anywhere in the valley. And perhaps because May 5th is a subdued day in Mexico, that's why I didn't see as many Mexican vendors as I'd hoped. Or maybe it was just because the event was on a Sunday this year. Whatever the reasons, it seems like the best bet to get a truly authentic Mexican style festival experience would be to wait for the real Mexican Independence Day on September 16th. If you're okay with Cinco as is, then by all means come to the Phoenix festival and go nuts

But when they do announce an event, all the tastemakers I know create a lot of buzz. They host the coolest art exhibit in Phoenix, called Chaos Theory. Go there. On occasion, there's other stuff going on and it's always interesting. Wish they were more active in the scene, but they're probably busy booking private events or something. Nevertheless, keep it on your radar.

Their look, their sound, their talents were beyond anything we could have expected. They were dressed so professionally! Their musicianship is simply incredible! They were personable! There were requests to play some classic songs and they knew every single one! The evening was filled not only with nostalgia but opportunities to tell more stories and created so many more beautiful memories! I cannot thank Mariachi Valle del Sol enough!
