Doan is super nice and i enjoyed having her bleach my hair for me. I came in asking for grey highlights and despite her bleaching my hair 2x it came out more of an ashy brown (which I was fine with). She did a great job on the bleaching and it's not damaged at all. The main gripe I have is that the dye she put on top washed out after one wash with purple shampoo, something that had never happened to me before when I had gotten my hair balayaged elsewhere in the past (nor when I'd gotten it toned every two months). She'd recommended using overtone conditioner--unfortunately, the silver overtone conditioner did nothing except give my hair a green twinge (looks a lot like hay currently.) When I panicked and told Doan about this she was kind and offered me useful advice--clarifying shampoo, which I hadn't thought about--and relayed the brand of dye she used so I wouldn't have an alternative salon use it on me in the future. Sadly, only two weeks after getting my hair done I'm going to have to go somewhere else to get it fixed, hence the three stars. :( read more

I have been coming to Doan to get my hair done for about 3 years now and I am always so happy with her work. I get a cut/highlights and I am always so impressed by her coloring work. Before I went to Doan, I went to some high-end salon and spent about 1/3 of my paycheck for okay results. So my review is not about services ,but about situation I witnessed while having a pedicure ( done by Jasmine - amazing work,BTW!!!thank you !!!), the owner of the place Duan was yelling ( literally yelling!!) at one of the employees,hairstylist Ziba ( who alSo does amazing job on my thick hair ) because she broke some lamp...poor Ziba was not even able to put a word of her justification of the situation ,was called liar etc Even if employee did broke something ( which happens ) ,it should have been told in respectful manner and in privacy ,without humiliation .. My first experience here was off. I came in for a Brazilian and wasn't prepared. My hair was longer and she didn't offer to trim it. Long story short I ended up just getting a Brazilian because it was too much pain. However she was really clean and used a new stick everytime she dipped in the wax. The price wasn't too bad. I came back a second time and the woman trimmed my hair. Still crazy painful because I wasn't used to getting waxed. She was super nice however. I didn't really feel like this place was as clean as it could be. They also didn't include the butt area as part of the Brazilian. Hat part if extra so that alone I may use them when I'm really in need and my waxer (brow) woman is busy. They have everything in this salon. Massage, wax, hair, nails and pedicure. I've been to this place a few times and usually have had a reasonably good experience. Nejla was fantastic, really sweet and did a good job. Nina was fine. This time, I had Doan (Nejla is out on leave for some reason). I know all the other reviews say good things about her, but my experience was awful - not because she doesn't know how to cut hair, but because she is mean, vindictive, and snarky. The first two times I came here, I was charged $35, consistent with the website for short hair. Nejla even gave me a $5 discount because I don't like product/blow dry. This time, Doan said $45, and I pointed out that before, I had been charged less, so this inconsistency wasn't really fair. She said the other people working at the time didn't know what they were doing. Flag 1: bashing on your own people - bad sign. She wouldn't budge, so I said fine, I'd pay $45. I'm pretty sure she was really annoyed that I even asked for a better price, so when I asked for 1 inch off, it turned into 3 inches. What was supposed to be little unnoticeable trim, turned into a drastic haircut (read: boy cut) that I absolutely can't even stand to look in the mirror. At the end of it, when I said I thought we agreed on 1 inch, she said snarkily "well, now you won't have to come back for 5 months. Save lots of money!!" I need to update this to say I still go to and LOVE Soleil 21. This is the only place I'll go in DC and the only place I recommend to friends. Koji no longer works there (and hasn't been there since my first visit) so I've been going to Doan ever since. I've been at least 3 times by now (maybe more?) to get my standard cut and color. I've also been for pedicures twice which have always been top-notch. Yesterday Doan was the only stylist in the salon due to others being sick, but she still took the exact amount of time and care I usually get. We discussed new hair lengths and colors since I wanted to go for something new. We decided on a shoulder length cut with a slightly different shade of red-brown. She was running between me and her other appointment but I never felt I was being ignored or rushed. She timed the dye jobs and leave-in conditioner treatments perfectly so neither of us had to wait too long. And Doan gives a great head massage while shampooing. Always my favorite part :) I'm so pleased with this new cut and have already received several compliments at work and a few double takes! I love that Soleil 21 truly cares about their clients and I feel Doan goes above and beyond to make sure my experience is always a good one. The white wine and free shampoo and other samples they offer make it even better! I'm already looking forward to my next appointment and of course their one-year anniversary! read more

I cannot say enough about how happy I am to have this spa in my neighborhood! From the moment I first walked in everyone was so friendly and helpful--I can't rave about them enough to my friends. Their prices are SO reasonable--nothing I've ever seen in DC before--and their specials are out of this world. They're very generous with drinks (and even snacks like strawberries and cut apples) and very attentive to everything you need. Some other experiences: 1. I brought two girlfriends for pedicures right when they opened and they weren't ready for all three of us right away, so they gave us FREE eyebrow clean ups and did an amazing job. 2. I'm really rough on my manicures and I chipped the polish off two of my nails after a few days. At other salons I'm used to paying a little to get them touched up, but when I went back in to get it re-done, they did it for free and were SO nice! I can't wait to go back! read more

This is by far the best experience I've had at a salon in years! (and without a doubt the best I've seen in the DC area). I easily booked an appointment online a few days ago for 11:15am this afternoon and just got back with one of the best shampoo/cut/blowdry I've ever had. I booked with Doan because I read such great reviews about her salon and her work and am so happy I did so! I showed up to Barracks Row 15 minutes before my appointment in case parking was an issue but, at 11am on a wednesday, it was no problem at all. When I walked into the salon it was relatively empty with the exception of the receptionist and a few people working in the back spa area. Doan came out to meet me and spent a good 5-10 minutes just talking to me about my hair, what I would like and if I had any particular issues with my hair that I wanted to address with her. After that she led me to the sink to wash my hair (with a nice little scalp massage at the end!) and back to the chair to go ahead with the cut. She checked again about what I wanted and went to work. I wasn't having anything drastic done, just taking two inches off the bottom and cleaning up my layers...but she did everything super easily/ quickly and was really sweet to talk to. I was still the only customer in the salon at the end of the cut (a little slow at 11am but it was perfect for me!) so she offered to fully blow-dry and style my hair since she had nothing else going on :) She spent 30 minutes or so working her magic and I can't rave enough about her talents with a round brush and blowdryer. The salon offers great deals/referral discounts/spa services etc... and all at a super great price! I can't imagine going anywhere else for any beauty needs! Go go go! read more

I don't know where all of these 5 star reviews are coming from because this place is DIRTY FILTHY GROSS. My coworker recommended it to me and its close to my house, so I decided to give it a go, but honestly, there were little hairs everywhere, dirt, grime. It's disgusting! For a 70+ dollar haircut, I expect at the very least a sanitary salon. Doan cut my hair and spent maybe 20 minutes on it. I have thick, long hair so 20 minutes just doesn't do the job. Sure enough, after another lady blow dried it, there were uneven pieces and the bangs looked awful. Doan snipped snipped the uneven strands, but otherwise, her work was hasty. I would give more stars if I could! At the recommendation of my friend, who has been a client of Doan for about a year, I tried out Soelil 21. I had been going to another salon for years but was looking for something a little different. I have been twice now both times for partial highlights and trim and I can honestly say that Doan has given me the best hair that i have had in years! Best cut and best color. Her attention to detail is astounding and her eye for color is amazing. She corrected my overly yellow blonde and made it just perfect. And adjusted it so that even grows out better -- which means I can go a little longer between visits! Not only is her styling amazing the prices are phenomenal. Let me start by saying that Doan gave me the best haircut of my LIFE! The woman is a genius with her sheers and colors. I have thin, totally boring hair and when I walked out of the salon, I looked and felt like a Rock Star. I'm not sure why other reviewers said Doan is snarky, I thought she was lovely and engaging. As soon as I sat down, she offered me a cup of coffee and then we started talking hair. After I showed her the picture of the style I liked, she gave me feedback and then took the time to go through her ipad and look at color choices that would suit my complexion and my thin hair. She made sure she knew exactly what color I liked. And my goodness, did she do an incredible job on the color! She provided a ton of great information on products and really took her time with me. Everyone was super friendly at this salon AND even better it's full service. With facials, mani/pedis and waxing in the back, as well as a masseuse on staff. After my hair was done I added a lip wax. The woman that did it was quick and super professional. It was painless. I felt totally comfortable in this salon. Also, not sure why the other reviewer said it was dirty, perhaps they went at the end of the day? I went early and it was great. I've already had three women ask me who does my hair ... Doan is the only person I'll let touch my hair these days. My hair is thick, coarse, and hard to work with -- Doan has transformed it! I always leave happy, with healthy-looking, sleek, perfectly-styled hair (though TBH this could be in part the result of my waiting too long between haircuts). In all seriousness, I've been seeing Doan for over 2 years and don't see myself leaving anytime soon. No matter how long I wait to come back for a trim, she always remembers me and asks me questions about my life, work, and family. She encourages me to try new styles when I'm itching for a change, and "roots" for me to keep trying when I'm sick of the grow-out process and just want to chop it off again. She knows me, knows my hair, and has earned my loyalty. I was relieved to find this salon after a year and a half of frustrating hunting and experimenting (thank you fellow yelpers!) I grew up in a rural area and have never quite adjusted to the sticker shock of DC haircuts. Having a simple trim with a blow dry just shouldn't put you back $65+. Here at Soleil 21 it won't. I think this salon is one of the best values on the Hill. Doan was excellent and spent quality time in consultation mode with me, listening and sharing her experienced opinion. I was confident that we were on the same page going into the cut and that it would be great without surprises. What a great way to end a Wednesday! I had a 7 pm appointment (not many nail salons stay open this late...HUGE bonus), and I arrived around 6:50 pm. I was greeted as soon as I entered the salon, and led back to the spa area to pick my nail color and sit in the serene waiting area. I was given an unexpected pre-service treat of fruit and croissant, and offered something to drink. (I opted for water, but they had wine and soda.) I waited for no longer than five minutes before I was placed in a chair (just enough time to eat my snack and find a good magazine). I've been receiving mani-pedis for years now, but never in my life have I had a technician as wonderful as Van. Sometimes technicians want to chat, or push other services on you, but Van didn't do either of those things. I think he understood right away that I was there to relax and indulge in some trashy celebrity news, so he let me be and only spoke when necessary. I loved how peaceful the setting was: NO TV, mood lighting, spa music and a waterfall! Absolute bliss! I was absolutely mesmerized by his attention to detail and strive for perfectionism. I was fascinated by his work, almost like I was actually watching an artist perform. He was meticulous in every part of both nail services, the clipping, filing, painting. This meant a little extra time in the chair, but it was worth every minute! I am ecstatic to say I've finally found my favorite nail place in DC! : ) I'll be back for sure! read more

I had a great experience at Soleil 21 today. I was a walk-in. Even though I was able to get a slot as a walk-in right then and there, the salon was still busy, with people in the back getting other spa services, and the salon part of the shop was still busy. I had grown my hair out long in order to donate, and the salon put me in Von's capable hands. I told him that I was making a donation of my hair, and that I wanted to do a short cut while still making my husband happy and not going too short. He gave me a cute bob with a sharp line from front to back, and he preserved a great deal of length for the hair I wanted to donate. He was also so fun to talk with, and it was clear from the way he was handling my hair and talking at the same time that he was comfortable doing something different and edgy comfortably. The only reason why I didn't give it the full 5 stars is that it would've been even better if the price - $55 for my long hair - were lower. I'm probably being unrealistic about price, since I'm cheap, but I know one can easily drop $100 for a half-inch trim, but I'm spoiled from getting rock-star haircuts in New York for only $35. I didn't get any of the free eats or drinks, but that's okay. I loved the look and feel of the salon, the festive, bright atmosphere, and the energetic vibe of the stylists. As a mom, I'm also excited about the kid-friendly setup they have for kids cuts. They've got two race car seats for kids, and they'll be my first stop when next I have to get cuts for my 2 1/2 year-old and my 11-month-old. read more

Let me first say this: I received a GREAT manicure (and lip wax) from Sally. She was sweet, friendly, professional, and extremely meticulous. I will definitely go back to her.... HOWEVER, I'm giving this place 3 stars because of the CREEPY EMPLOYEE (man) who just HOVERED OVER me and another woman while getting our manicures. 1) He was obviously sick, and he was snorting/hocking his phlegm like he was in the privacy of his own home 2) he was CREEPY and disgusting, 3) after he HOVERED and STARED at another woman who was getting her manicure by the door (and I mean, he was literally standing over this poor woman, HOCKING and coughing away), he then went outside (which was the door beside this woman), and began to smoke -- with the door opened a little. Disgusting and totally unprofessional. I wanted to complain to the man at the front desk, but it was a Friday and I just decided against it. Not sure why. If this man isn't around being creepy and disgusting, this place would have 5 stars. Easily. But for now, it's getting 3. I will go back ONE MORE TIME because I liked Sally, and this location is very convenient to my home. But if that disgusting man is hanging around, I will not return. read more

I've been here three times in a month and a half. Once for an eyebrow wax, a hair cut and now highlights. Mona has been my stylist each time. I was drawn to her after the brow service because she didn't talk my ear off but asked the right questions to make sure I got what I wanted. My haircut experience was fantastic. She gave me a very styled blowdry that lasted for two days which was amazing. I've bought several products here-both morrocan oil and some others here. I've only come here for nails, not hair. The nail salon is in the back of the store. It is a small salon, with only four chairs for pedicures, a little waiting area, two tables for manicures, and a drying table that seats four. Good hours. They do serve wine and other drinks if you wish. Prices are on par with most DC nail salons. I've been here many times and had a few different technicians. They're super nice, have good colors, give a good massage. It's a calm atmosphere (some salons can feel hectic, which isn't as nice), and very neighborhood-friendly and intimate, people are talkative! I've had friends come visit me and they've served them wine too--even though they weren't getting any work done! Probably a perk of being a regular. If I had to nit pick, my only real complaint would be the massage chairs aren't the best--but they are okay. Cash tips are preferred, but you can tip on the credit card, which is a nice convenience as well--not all support that. read more

Looks like this place is hit or miss for many and your experience may vary greatly depending on who you work with. All that aside, I had a wonderful experience with my nail technician, Tina. I had a gel french manicure, and regular pedicure. She was meticulous, gave me a lovely foot/leg massage in addition to a scrub, and it was all in all an extremely pleasant, relaxing experience. They fit me in for a very last minute appointment, as I am in town from Boston for my cousin's wedding, which I greatly appreciated. During my visit, I was also able to chat briefly with the owner who was a total sweetheart. The woman who did my nails spoke very limited english, which made communicating very difficult, but that was the only thing detracting from my overall experience. I had the most amazing experience with Soleil 21 and especially with Doan! I cannot recommend it more highly! I called yesterday, a Friday afternoon, desperate after my appointment at another salon was canceled without notice, and dying to get in somewhere that same day. I have had so many bad experiences with hair salons, and I called being very clear about what I wanted and how difficult my hair can be. I have home-dyed black hair, and decide every couple of years to change it up, and I have had everything terrible imaginable go wrong with it. She took the time to talk through my hair condition and texture with me on the phone, and had me come in same day for the consultation. She let me know ahead of time that we would either do it that day, or wait until another day when she had more time if we wouldn't be able to get it done before closing. When I went for the consult, everyone was really friendly at the salon, but Doan went above and beyond. She took the time to pull up different pictures to make sure she knew exactly what cut and color I was going for, and agreed to do it the same day, even though it was already after 5 p.m. and she expected it to take 3-4 hours (I believe they close at 8 or 8:30). I warned her my hair has been known to take 6 hours in the past, but she was right on in estimating the time it would take. She did two color correction applications, and the color barely budged. This has happened every time I get my hair done and I would have been surprised if it hadn't happened. She proposed doing an ombre style so that we could keep the top of the hair dark, and lighten the roots. She again took the time to show me different pictures and styles, and we went for it. She asked all the right questions to make sure she really understood what I wanted the result to look like, and she made sure it happened. I felt terrible while getting it done, as I knew that we would be running past even 4 hours and past closing, but she never made me feel bad for keeping her late on a Friday. I even tried to let her off the hook of blow drying my hair after, but she insisted that I shouldn't leave without seeing the color. I was afraid when leaving the salon that there wasn't as much of a change in the color as I was hoping for, but realized as soon as I was in more customary lighting that it was probably the best color I had ever had, and something I never would have though of without her recommendation. I also had her do just a very plain cut, and she listened to how much I wanted to take off and stuck to my request! I have had nothing but great compliments so far, and I will absolutely be going back! read more
