I've been in this shop for other non-hair related services, so I'm not commenting on that. I am commenting on the overall appearance and cleanliness of the salon. I did not comment after my first time there as I thought perhaps it was an anomaly. Well, months later it's the same; I'm usually there on a weekday early to midday (no one cutting hair/the shop just opened). When in the waiting area, each time I've been there, I observed hair on the floor, bench and the table holding the magazines. The waiting area is not particularly near the hair cutting area. I'm worried that the place is not cleaned very often or swept. Tracy & Company is located close to the Eastern Market metro and on the Circulator line (the bus stop is literally right outside of their shop, making it very convenient). read more

This is for a shampoo blowout; Touria rocked, she worked quickly despite my wavy hair, & gave me a full bodied look without any product use (I asked for none). She's got great mellow energy & is incredibly kind... The rest of the staff also seem really nice & low key... She talked to me about changing up my products & asked about frequency of haircuts, & I really appreciated that she wasn't pushing anything on me but just educating me... & when I asked for tea (it was 10' out!) she said of course & asked if I wanted cream or sugar... Just great service, & did I mention I called at 11am & asked how soon I could be seen and she said to just walk over & she'd take me ! I REALLY wish a reviewer on here had mentioned that this place is for middle-aged women! I've tried a couple hair places in DC with no success, and decided to try Tracy and Co. based on the high reviews. I was pretty disappointed. When I walked in, the first thing I noticed was that everyone, customers and staff, were at least 35+, most over 40 even. I am 25, and have a longish, layered, young haircut. I was a bit apprehensive when I saw that this was more my mother's crowd than mine, but figured I would give it a try and not judge based on age. Bad move. After showing my hairstylist a picture of messy, shoulder-length layers that I wanted, I walked out looking like a frigging 40 year old woman (which is perfectly fine if you are 40- not so much when you're 25). It's pretty bad. I can't really describe it, except to say that I look like a soccer mom. Not a good look. Now all I can do is wait until I visit my home city again so I can get my real hairdresser to fix what's been done (EXPENSIVELY!) to my hair. Way too much money for a rubbish haircut. If you are young (ie 30 and under), I would recommend avoiding this place. read more

I wonder if patrons had been offered incentives in exchange for 5-star reviews that would compromise the integrity of this reviewing system. I'm breaking my self-imposed rule of only negatively reviewing a place after a repeat visit, but my experience was not at all consistent with the raving 5-star reviews I saw here that led me to try Tracy & Company in the first place. "Meh. I've experienced better" or "A-OK" are more apt descriptions. I have previously told stylists that I'm trying to grow my hair out, don't like my layers, and want long side swept bangs and normally get an OK cut. Here I'm not sure if it even looks like I just got a haircut. I got sprayed with hair product from the next chair over and both I and my stylist choked back some coughs. The shampoo was fine but I got a shock of cold water and no scalp massage or anything, which is normally my favorite part of getting a haircut, though I get that not every place does that. What I am saying is: There was nothing special about this place and it wasn't even totally comfortable. I feel like I'm being unfair by only giving three stars after only one visit that may have been an anomaly, especially with what may have been a tricky request. It just really didn't feel like a 5-star salon!! I especially feel bad writing a negative review of a small business, but I and other people rely on Yelp, and I just don't think this business' average rating was an accurate reflection of the general customer experience. read more

Never have I walked out of a hair salon 100% completely happy with my haircut. At Tracey and Company, I was beyond thrilled with what my stylist did! I made an appointment for a Friday afternoon and was seen right on time. I told my stylist exactly what I wanted: I wanted to keep as much length as possible, but I also wanted to get rid of split ends. She asked how I normally wear my hair, my part, etc. I felt like she was really interested in doing a good job. I will definitely be back here for every cut from here on out. After moving to DC over 5 months ago and in need of a good hair stylist to bring life back to my weather-torn hair, I followed the trail of 5 star reviews all the way to Tracy & Co. I brought Tracy a magazine picture I found of the haircut I wanted not really expecting much. One hour later I walk out of the place feeling like a slightly more "healthy" version of the Calvin Klein model from my photo. Tracy spent just as much drying and styling my hair as she did cutting it. $55 in my mind is a decent price to pay for a good cut. I followed Marsha from Shears to Cachet. to Tracy and Co; given that she is moving East I suspect she will soon be in Baltimore (LOL). Tracy's decor/space is ok, not as cushy as Cachet, but the staff are friendly. I moved here about two years ago, and found Marsha when she was at Shears through Yelp. She is a really good stylist and I am very happy about how she colors and cuts my hair. I have lived previously in LA and Manhattan and she compares well the good people I found there. If I have a complaint, it is that if she gets busy, like everyone else she may try to cut a few corners. When I thought this was happening on the coloring I mentioned something, and she was very cool about it and I haven't had a problem since. I like the fact that there is no attitude here. read more

Thank goodness for Marsha at Tracy & Company! In my younger days, my hair was naturally so much lighter than it is now. To compensate, I attempted to dye my own hair... um, not good. I never got my desired results, so I seeked professional help. Well, after going through so many different hair stylists/colorists I felt like I needed the other kind of professional help... until my husband recommended his stylist, Marsha. She took my dull hair that others seemed to have managed to make blonde look gray on me (c'mon, I just entered my 30's!) and turned it into the pretty medium blonde I used to be while adding gorgeous lighter blonde highlights. Just what I had been looking for! Marsha does such a good job of blending in with my natural color, that I can go quite a few months before it looks like I need to make another hair appointment. Talented stylists! Fun atmosphere! Fabulous haircut! GREAT PRICE! Obviously everyone's experience is going to be different since it depends on the stylist you get. But I think Tracy hires smart, talented people. The woman who cut my hair actually took the time to discuss what I wanted. We looked at pictures and she went over what would and wouldn't work with my face shape. She also gave me a reality check on some of the haircuts I liked in their salon books, leveling with me about the amount of product used to get that specific look and how high maintenance something would be. She was also conservative with how much she lobbed off at first. Then she showed me what it looked like and asked if I wanted to cut more off. As she said, you can always take off, but you can't put back. The salon was decorated for Valentine's Day with giant hearts and lips everywhere. It was super fun. I got a great vibe from everyone in there. And the best part was, the price was SO reasonable! I think I spent 50 dollars total, with tip. Back in the day, 10 years ago, I found Marsha and have followed her across the city since! She's that amazing! Even when I didn't live here I waited until I was in town for her to work her magic on me. Me--I'm adventurous with hair, and life too, so I'm often up for trying new colors and styles and yet, every time I walk away from Marsha I'm completely satisfied. I've gotten compliments on the street, in airplanes, on the subway, on dates, etc. Last week we went for short and really dark with a little bit of bangs. Makes my eye color pop! A quick update: I have been a loyal customer for three years and I hate to think of ever having to go anywhere else. A while back, in my early 20s, I flirted with super short hair, but never liked it because I always felt like I looked like a boy, or just looked bad. That's why I descended into a number of years of simply wearing my hair in a ponytail. Until I found Tracy, who works some kind of magic each time I go, and gives me a short, cute haircut that requires minimal (no) effort on my behalf every morning. My last haircut was in Orlando back 8 MONTHS ago. Yes, 8 months. I waited 8 months because the last stylist traumatized me. I asked for a trim of one (1) inch and she chopped off over 3 inches and gave me lots & lots of layer. My hair looked like a poofy version of Jennifer Aniston's do back in the Friends day. So, when I moved to the DMV area, I was anxious about trying a new stylist. I researched & researched and took the plunge and booked an appointment with Touria at Tracy & Company. I have thick & long hair and most stylists complain right off the bat,which is not reassuring. I get it. It's hair. Instead, Touria smiled, listened to my trauma/horror story, make some recommendations, and got to work. She washed, cut, styled & blow dried my hair in 52 minutes. That is a record. I moved to DC 10 years ago and struggled to find an accomplished manicurist. My previous esthetician always did perfect manicures on my natural nails and people always remarked about the quality of her work. So after trying 6 different salons DC and VA and not getting the same results I stopped having my nails done professionally about 3 years ago. After scouring the internet I decided to give Tracy & Company a try. And I'm so glad I did! NINA did my nails with gel polish (my first time) and filed my nails in the Oval - Square shape that I like. She is a gem. I told her I was concerned about what my nails would look like when the gel polish is taken off because I was only familiar with the gel tips that my sister got and the damaging effect it had on her natural nails. She assured me that this polish would last 2 weeks and would not damage my nails. I thought she was dreaming, but my polish did last 3 weeks with no chips and the only obvious change was that my nails had grown out so the polish no longer reached my cuticles. I've finally found my go to manicurist in Nina. I highly recommend her if you are looking for a truly good manicure. read more

I hadn't gotten a hair cut in over a year because I had such a bad experience last time, but decided to give Tracy and Co a try since it's near my house. I went for the first time for an haircut w/o expecting too much: not much luck lately with my groupon deals, so I was ready for mediocre results, but surprise suprise I came out with a fantastic haircut. Cherelle (sp?) is a small pretty young stylist who knows her job. I came back for a colour (bleach first then colour as I like my hair veru very light) and Cherelle did her magic again. She consulted with the other stylists in the salon and put together a colour formula that was perfect. I had a similar experience in France and I couldn't be more pleased to know that I can get the same results here in my back yard thanks to this salon. The place is very small and I can see - if children are present - how noisy it could get, but the prices are very reasonable which reflects the "family style" place. If you are looking for a posh salon do not come here, but if the outcome is important than, try it. read more

I have to admit that I was a little bit concerned when Tracy started off with the trimmers because I'm a bit of a salon snob and instantly get worried when I see any use trimmers except to do some finishing touches... but well was I wrong! Tracy did a FANTASTIC job on my hair (apparently she uses trimmers on hair that grows straight out and flat, like mine does), and I have to say that she was very pleasant to talk to and everyone has given me compliments on my hair. A men's do is normally $35, but I tried out this place using one of those deal sites, and I will definitely be coming back. The place is only about a block or two from the Eastern Market metro stop, so you can do some Sunday/Saturday shopping and brunch while you're in the neighborhood too :) read more

True, we can't stay 25 forever, but I always feel 10 years younger when I leave. And I disagree with the person who said they style everyone like a 40 something soccer mom, as my teen is very picky about her hair and trusts T completely! So i went here with my friend who raves about Nina for manicures and pedicures. I thought I'd take her advice and join her the next time she went, as I wanted a gel manicure for an important event. Of course, my friend got Nina as her nail tech and I had a man who did not even tell me his name. Fast forward to not even 12 hours later and the gel is already peeling off my nails... I have never received such a rushed and botched gel manicure ever. I did not even have the chance to tell him what shape i wanted for my nails (and when i finally did, I was ignored). Next, he went so fast and carelessly doing my cuticles that they bled. Finally, he put the gel polish all over my cuticles and the sides of my nails, which has now led to the gel peeling off not even 12 hours later. For paying what I did, i am highly disappointed, and i probably will not return. (Sidenote: pedicure was fine.) read more

They are always up-to-date with the latest on what's happening around town. I get lots of good stories and best of all, a great hair cut. When I wanted to grow my hair out Tracy worked with me to make sure it didn't look like I was growing it out. When I went very short, she made sure it stayed cute and feminine. When I wanted a hair cut that wouldn't work, despite my deisre for "that look", I got an honest assessment of why I needed to rethink that move. I got my hair cut here based on yelp reviews. Marsha gave me the worst haircut I have ever gotten, or frankly that I have ever seen. I just wanted a healthy trim throughout, including my bangs. She cut the bangs WAY too short. crooked, and she DIDN'T EVEN USE A COMB TO KEEP THEM STRAIGHT while cutting them. I wish I was exaggerating. There was one very noticeable chunk of my bangs right in the middle of my forehead that hung down a good half quarter past the others. Honestly. It was that bad. In addition, I have thick wavy hair... so usually stylists layer a little at the ends, but nothing major or I will look like a poof ball. I explained this to her, and again, I was getting the same hair cut, so she could see what my layers are like. Marsha cut HUGE CHUNKY horrid layers, that were uneven by at least an inch between either side of my face. It was so bad that men noticed at a bar I went to after my hair cut. I made an appointment here prior to a a very busy two week period of events, meetings etc. so I needed a cut that was going to look great and not take a lot of time to maintain. I had an appointment but still had to wait 45 minutes before I was seen. There were kids running all over the place screaming, the woman sitting next to me and the stylist were eating the worst smelling chili hot dogs (that with the smell of hair chemicals almost made me sick) , I asked for my hair to be thinned and the stylist spent TWENTY minutes looking all over the salon for thinning shears. Even with all that if the haircut was great I wouldn't have a problem but I brought in a picture of what I wanted and the result was bangs that were so short, layers that were a disaster and me in shock at what a terrible cut I just got. Not only that it was evident to the "stylist" and the others int eh salon how bad the cut was by their reactions. I went somewhere else the next week to fix what Tracy's salon had done and she was literally in shock and asked if I attempted to cut my hair myself! Needless to say it was a terrible haircut and a terrible experience and I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Let me tell you I apparently will follow Marsha wherever she goes, like many of the reviewers here! Marsha seriously has given me the best haircuts of my life. I have thick wavy hair and could never quite get myself to like it. I always wanted straight hair with those cool straight bangs. Every time I would get a haircut I was never truly happy with it. That is, until I met Marsha! She has cut my hair twice now and each time I love the style. It flatters my wavy hair and she cut my bangs on an angle that complements my face. I now love my wavy thick hair!! Also, Marsha's new place, Tracy & Company is awesome. It's about a block from the Eastern Market Metro and even before you walk in it screams good vibes. The place is so sunny and cheerful, both because of the windows, the painting on the walls, the delightful people working there, and its reasonable prices! As you can see, I have followed Marsha on her moves to a few salons. I was an early visitor to this salon, and Marsha is the most "at home" here that I have seen her. Obviously, I like her and her haircuts and I have been going to her for several years. She says it's taken her a long time to find other stylists to work with who have the same work ethic and abilities that she does, so this will be her last move. The salon is very sunny and cheerful and has just been redone, so all is brand new inside. It's a very cool neighborhood. I work nearby and eat lunch in this area often. I liked the cut and her great personality so much that she is the only person who has cut my hair ever since. She always does a great job and therefore I still book an appointment with her every month. My experience couldn't have been more different with Marsha at Tracy & Co. than the other reviewers. When I went in, based off yelp reviews I told Marsha I liked my hair style very much but was getting it done in Alexandria. I wanted someone closer. I told Marsha my hair was hard to handle and that I could handle my current style, another reason why I liked it so much. I asked her just to clean it up. Instead I noticed her cutting in layers and when I asked about it, she said "Oh you're not getting that haircut. You need layers. You'll see.'' Well what I've seen is all that hard to handle hair in all kinds of layers so that I completely can't control it. Also, I am a middle-aged woman and my cut was very stylish before Marsha. Now I look like every old looking middle-age woman out there. I watched the movie Secretariat the other night and realized my hair looked like Sharon Stone's in that movie, which was set in the 1970s. If you want an up-to-date haircut or want a say in your hair style, don't go to Marsha. read more

She captured exactly what I was looking for by keeping my length and giving me something fun with a lot of movement that would be super easy for me to take care of and style once I got home. She showed me a great product, but didn't push me buying it at all, which was refreshing. I was there for about 40 minutes total, which is quick relative to other salons I've been to, particularly since I have really thick hair. $55 total for the shampoo, cut, dry & style - I don't think you can find a better deal in the DC area.
