I had a disappointing experience with Danielle. I brought in a clear reference image and went over exactly what I did and didn't like, but the final result didn't match what I asked for. When I requested adjustments to the style, she only cut one side, which made the style uneven. After asking for her to fix it, she handed me the brush and scissors instead of fixing it herself, telling me that if I wanted it different I could try it. I've used the same stylist for years but the last few times the cuts have been uneven, and I'll notice spots she missed when I get home and have to chop them myself. I desperately needed my long hair cut and made an appointment here with Lisette. She really listened to what I wanted and cut a little at a time. This was refreshing compared to prior stylists I've seen that cut 6 inches when you ask for 3 (IYKYK). The salon is clean and they offer you a beverage as you're waiting in their very well-decorated lobby. The only thing is that I wish I had more styling at the end. My hair was blow-dried a bit flat without much body. This was more than likely because my hair is thin, stubbornly straight, and takes some effort to hold a style. The cut was $80. Dori gave me the perfect in between length of medium to long layers, she cut the exact amount off the bottom that we agreed to which I always appreciate when getting long hair cut. I had my hair done by tommy and he's phenomenal. I have thick Hispanic hair that usually gets cut unevenly and he was able to correct past mistakes with my hair. He's so detailed and explains why he does everything he does. He thinned my hair out so it doesn't weigh so heavy on my scalp. Gave my layers and curtain bangs. I also sent my mom here to correct her blonde hair and he's really great at color too! He left her hair smooth, silky and healthy. She didn't have dandruff and hair breaking off after having her hair colored. He goes through the correct process to get you the hair you want. read more

Took my two daughters to get their hair cut by Megan. It was not done well so I complained a day later after I actually had a chance to wash and style it myself. They called back and said it was my fault that I did not notify them there and corrected the stylist when she asked me. It was curled and in the moment, it was hard for me to tell. Emily (assuming manager) told me she was the professional and they stand by their services. They also offered me $10. It cost $90 per child. Not including tip. I've thought on this review for maybe 5+ months now. I feel bad giving a negative review, but in the end I have to warn people with curly hair. I had my haircut by Jen, who many recommended for curly hair. Do not go to her for curly hair! She thinned individual sections of my hair while it was wet to take away bulk (a no no for curly hair). Gave me one big layer which made me look like I had a very long mullet happening. I've had to grow out my hair for 5 months so when I go it get it fixed, the chop would leave me with above shoulder-length hair. The worst.... she has curly hair. I've had someone with far less experience at least know the basics of cutting curly hair and do a decent job. I paid more than I usually do for this haircut and then a tip on top of it because I thought I'd get the curly cut I need. She said come back if I need to fix some things here and there. !!!! It was my whole dang head. Almost cried on my way home and immediately washed my hair to see what the damage was. It was bad. My curl pattern was done for the time period. In the end, she probably does a decent job with non-curly hair. Or for someone who heat styles their hair. She didn't know that gel has been a big thing for curly hair? I know I'm getting sidetracked, and I really blame myself for not immediately leaving when I felt things were going south and she wasn't really listening to my concerns on the cut. read more

I chose Nina as my stylist because I related to her bio online; I love that you get a glimpse of all the stylists and you can choose which one matches your style and your hair goals. Nina took the time to ask me about my current hair products and how I like to style my hair before she even brought me back to the bowl. I love the sense of understanding that I felt through that process. She did a fabulous job with my trim and listened to everything I told her that I liked and disliked about my hair. So, I have never talked to a hair stylist who said "I can't do that" until I visited this salon with my step-son. It's literally across the street from our apartment. We just moved here and I didn't know what to expect, but my partner had already taken our son here and made another appointment for yesterday. So we get there, and we were assigned Megan. Well, when I described the haircut we wanted the first thing Megan said was "I don't use clippers, I can't do that haircut. I only use scissors." Well this kind of floored me. I have thought about it all night, and I had to say something so I am posting this review everywhere. If your salon hired people who can't use clippers, it has NO RIGHT charging premium prices for kid's haircuts. What kind of hair salon does this? And I was starting to panic, because the kid really needed his hair cut. The only reason I am giving two stars for this review is that Maxie came over and saw the situation and defused it by offering to switch. If you hire people in your salon, you should hire people with people skills like this girl, and not the person who cannot or refuses to do what your customer wants. Will not go back - my partner is incensed about the cost of the haircut, but I feel like there is a whole other issue there - $55 for a haircut on an 8 year old? Their policy is 5 years old but seriously if you are putting unskilled people on your chairs you should make it ten years old. read more

Yikes. Thursday was my 3rd time going to this salon to see one of the colorists, Whitney. She had bleached and toned my hair at each of my previous visits, after which I had left feeling confident, pretty. My hair was an icy platinum blonde. So icy it was an ever-so-lightly violet-tinted silver. It looked DOPE. Yesterday, though, when I went to see Whitney, I got weird vibes off the bat. Little did I know, my spidey senses were trying to warn me that Whitney was about to make me look like a staff member at a suburban mall Journey's in 2006 peddling pop-punk shoelaces and chain wallets. She was not her usual bubbly self, complaining that she was hungry and needed to rush to Zara after work. I get it, the girl's got a life. However, it didn't instill a ton of confidence that she was giving me her best self. She then mentioned that I had "waited too long" to touch up my hair and that I would have a yellow line halo around my head. What?! I've been getting my hair bleached since I was 19. As a poor college student, I was getting my hair bleached, like, every 5 months. Seems weird that after 7 weeks I've suddenly screwed the pooch and consigned myself to a brassy ring in my hair. Then when Whitney was washing the toner out of my hair, she goes "Oh, f**k. I left it in too long. It's purple." I took a look at it, and said "At least it isn't brassy. It'll probably look more silver when it's dry." She left me at the styling table (aka the "here's some product and a dryer. Knock yourself out because, for $100, you're sure as sh*t getting limited service" station). As I frantically tried to dry my hair, I realized in horror that my hair was a dark violet. A brief pause for context: This is a salon in the West Loop. Lots of wealth, lots of very put together women with highlights and Louis Vuitton. I have tattoos on my hands and a ripped backpack. AKA I already don't exactly blend into this neighborhood of chambray and Rosé All Day. So imagine my immense shame as I met the eyes of the urban soccer mom directly behind me, staring at me in pity as heat climbed my cheeks and my eyes stung with embarrassed tears. I decided to bail with my half-wet locks not getting any better as they went from clumpy grape jelly chunks, to a soft electrocuted cotton ball soaked with purple nail polish. When I got upstairs, there were about 8 staff members (including Whitney) standing at the desk. I told Whitney that it was purple and that it wasn't what I wanted. I wanted blonde hair, not a purple reminiscent of the roadies for From First to Last at Warped Tour. Whitney seemed pretty uninterested and told me to go home and wash it out myself and that if I didn't like it still by Monday, to come back. ARE YOU SERIOUS? I work in hospitality downtown, and I can't imagine telling an unhappy guest to essentially go figure it out. I got in the shower and took to my off-brand Eeyore head with regular shampoo to see if I could manage to scrub out some of the toner. When I got out of the shower, I discovered that my hair was breaking off in wispy white clumps and sticking to my face like a botched bleach billy goat beard. As I frantically ran my fingers through the sticky mess, more and more fell out in little chunks. The broken pieces were so damaged, I could roll them between my fingers like $111 boogers. I tearfully called the salon back to request that a manager get in touch with me. I finally connected with Nicole, who couldn't have been nicer. This was the best part of the whole nightmare of me treating myself to an upscale salon. She listened, and empathized and agreed to refund the process and tone ($80). She offered for me to come in for a complimentary blowout, however I'd probably rather go for the hand dryer in a McDonald's bathroom before ever returning to Solo Salon. P.S. went to Julia at Art + Science and she cured me! Turns out being disfigured by Solo Salon was only temporary. read more

I think this review is long overdue as I've been going to Solo for years. I have found my hair home as many other noted... I always find myself immediately calm as they escort me to grab tea/coffee in their lounge while flipping through magazines before an appointment. A few of other highlights: -Carly (one of the first chairs) is fantastic, so talented. -Brittni (correct spelling) is my go-to for makeup! I love doing my own, and am quite picky, but she is fabulous and of of the very few artists I trust - she's always a stop before any gala or Chicago wedding. -It's one of the few Chicago Bumble & Bumble salons, these products are must-haves. -It's silly, but they always have good music in the background. In fact, I liked Solo folks so much, I hired them for my wedding. My mom, my sisters and bridal party all raved about their hair and makeup from the hair/makeup team of four. I had a manicure/pedicure here last Thursday, and it was outstanding. My MIL had side by side appointments at 6:30pm with Faith and Patty (the receptionist booked it for 7pm, so we waited for a while). Faith and Patty were amazing. They really took their time to do a fanastic and thorough job. Everything here is super clean, and they use copper bowls for the pedicure, so they can actually be fully sanitized. The space is very pretty in a subtle relazing way, and they will bring you tea, coffee, or water while you're waiting, which I think is a lovely touch. Patty and Faith really like working together, and it makes the experience better for the client. You really feel like you're at a salon gossiping with friends. Basha the waxer was in a room behind us, and man is she fast. People were coming and going out of that room while we were enjoying our long luxurious mani/pedi. It took almost 2 hours and cost $64 plus tip, but it was worth it. It is an outstanding service. read more

I've been going to Katy for my hair for over 3 years now and I've followed her from salons in Lincoln Park, to River North, now to the West Loop. Not only is she fantastic at actually cutting hair, but she's incredibly thoughtful in remembering what we tried/changed the time before and bringing that up each time. She also has a really good eye and sense of creativity for trying out new styles or changing things up - I've come to trust her completely and she's always done an amazing job. I made the mistake of going to a different salon on Friday and ended up with black hair when I wanted a lighter brown with highlights. Megan and Shamus came to the rescue, working together to come up with the perfect solution and I couldn't be more pleased. They also took me in last minute which was so nice. This salon is a breath of fresh air for a small town girl! The woodsy decor provides a calming atmosphere, and this salon has much more room than is let on from the outside. They utilize a ground floor and basement to provide an array of services from hair to nails and facials. Adam did an AMAZING job with my cut and color, and was very personable and easy to talk to. He made me feel comfortable through the entire experience and had great tips for managing my heavy curls. My cut was perfect length and color was distributed very nicely. I had been visiting this Salon since August of 2019, my hair is dark brown and I wanted to go lighter. I decided to go with Tommy who's a student in training. At first everything seem great. He explained that in order to get lighter I had to do it slowly and in stages so I will not mess my hair. By January six months later visiting every month I was so hoping that my hair will look lighter by the roots since it was very noticeable the difference, he gave me highlights all over but then decided to make my roots darker again, not sure what happend because he did not mention anything and he thought I did not noticed but I did. My hair was darker than before, It was the first time I went home disappointed but I was hoping to get it fixed next time. Then he started canceling my appointments and every time a different excuse.. finally he gave me an option for either 3/2 or 3/8 and I said 3/8. I have an event coming up and he did not even cared to call or text to tell me that he was busy and the appointment was canceled. So rude and careless! Every single time I had an appointment I paid around $40-60 and always left a $30 tip. I believed I was a nice customer and this guy didn't care or had any respect for me as a customer. Lesson learned!! You get what you pay for. Now I have to find a professional to fix his mess read more

I went in for a root touch up because I have gray hair. I have to go every 6-12 weeks. My normal stylist was booked and I had vacation. This stylist on her first attempt to touch up my root made my root 3-5 shades lighter than my hair with permanent color. Then she attempted to correct the color with simi permanent color and my head was burning about 10-15 mins in so I asked that she remove the color. My now 3 toned roots being red ish brown ish yellow makes for a great look for vacation. She offered to fix it again if I came back and I said ok but I'm not dum enough to let someone practice on my hair for 145$ a pop. She nor the salon never even offered a discount. She said she would fix it and gave me another apt. I don't complain nor do I cause trouble in public it's embarrassing for everyone so as mad as I am I left saying nothing. The other people next to me looked great so I guess maybe she was new and that's what I get for trying someone new, i just didn't know you could mess up a root touch up at such a highly rated Salon. I'll never go back and I'll definitely be telling my friends that not only is my hair ugly but I was charged full price with out even a question when she had to have known that my hair looks terrible read more

Unfortunately had two poor experiences with this salon. My first appointment, the stylist told me the haircut I requested was impossible to do (even though it was a simple cut that I already had), and told me we weren't connecting well. I ended up getting a very basic cut that was nothing like what I asked for. I booked a second appointment hoping that my first experience was just a fluke. I did not receive a confirmation text or call to confirm my appointment and when I called the salon to inquire on the date and time they were closed and sent me to a text messaging system. The automated system sent me a text the next day letting me know my appointment had been cancelled and that I would be charged 50% of the fee for the cut. I called the salon that morning and after multiple attempts, finally spoke to someone who told me that communication did go out to me even after I said repeatedly I did not receive it. The person on the phone was not accommodating and told me it was my responsibility to keep track of appointments. I was in desperate need of a haircut - I moved back to Chicago this summer and have avoided the process of finding a new stylist by just not cutting my hair for months - yikes.
