This place is great! I recently moved back to the area and my hair desperately needed a refresh. I wasn't sure what type of appointment to make and was able to get help and schedule through texting which I loved. My appointment was with Shelby and she was the best. She recommended a low-maintenance color option for my grown out highlights that still covers my greys and isn't bleach. Magic! Also the blowout was perfect and left my hair so soft and shiny. I truly cannot say enough great things about Dori at Solo Salon--she is hands-down the best stylist I've ever been to! From color to cuts to treatments, every experience I've had with her has been exceptional. I saw Dori at this salon and at the time, I thought she did a good job. She matched the brown color I wanted to my extensions perfectly. My poor review is not directly tied to my first experience, but my second and last. I was swayed into booking an appointment months in advance with additional discounts and I was ASSURED I would be reminded about my appointment multiple times in advance and as someone who travels frequently for work, this worked for me because it seemed flexible. Fast forward to tonight when it's now 22 hours to my appointment and I just got notification about it. I am out of town and asked to reschedule but was charged a 50% charge which would make sense, but I wasn't given 24 hour notice AND was charged for an additional service that I did not agree to and did not have the first time around which is fraud. I understand supporting businesses and under any normal circumstance I wouldn't even bat an eye, but please don't charge me for something I did not sign up for and do this after you made a mistake, especially when you admit "technology wasn't in your favor" and your system failed to remind me. read more

I have been seeing Lauren at Solo for about a year and I have the most difficult hair to color. I KNOW that "everyone pulls warm" but on top of hating brassy color, I always want my roots darker and my ends lighter with just enough highlights around my face, without being too much... but also noticeable so I'm not spending money for nothing. As you can see, I'm a total nightmare client, but I've been happy with Lauren's skills every single time I've been in the salon. They are also super careful about COVID, which is great. I feel like some places say they are COVID compliant but you can tell that people are not 6 ft apart or you constantly see employees with their masks below their noses. I can't recommend Shelby enough. I just started going to her, and she really nailed it with my color. Average haircut, really mediocre experience (nothing truly horrible, nothing great) - the salon is efficient and well maintained, which I appreciate, but I am definitely looking for more out of an $80 haircut. Also really appreciated their flexibility in scheduling, but otherwise not an experience I'd wholeheartedly recommend. My stylist didn't seem to care much about what I wanted or didn't want, she was intent on delivering the least controversial haircut possible (which is better than the opposite, I guess) and executed on that goal. She didn't take off too much hair or do anything that I asked her not to do, which is great. But beyond that baseline, which is hard to find I suppose, I really can't say many positive things. She never asked if I had product preferences, and gave me fairly indifferent/flippant responses to any questions I asked about the health or care of my hair - I got the message that she didn't want to chat, which is fine, but would have appreciated her at least asking how I wanted my hair styled after the cut. The blowout was basic at best, essentially looks like I ran a smoothing brush through my hair, and I was pretty disappointed by that. Additionally, I was covered EVERYWHERE with little hair pieces. I had to ask to have them cleaned up, and still came home with hair stuck to my sweater, leggings, and shoes. Not ideal and kinda gross. If you want a haircut that has neither the risk if you leaving in tears (this has definitely happened to me) nor the potential of a truly beautiful cut, this is probably your spot. read more

I had used the services of Solo Salon with Laine for over two years. In June 2022, I made a hair appointment for 4 different services worth over $800. The appointments were for October 19th, 2022. A week before my appointment I received an email reminder, which indicated that, if I need to cancel my appointment within less than 24 hours I will be charged a cancelation fee worth 50% of the services that I had scheduled. I needed to cancel the appointment due to work travel and gave the studio 6 days notice. I was then told that my services were specialized and required 2 week cancelation notice and that I will be charged the 50% cancelation fee. I then asked to reschedule my appointment instead and was told that I would need to have my appointment in the week after or they couldn't reschedule it without charging me. I asked them to send documentation with their cancelation policy and definition of specialized services since I was not aware of either. I included screen shot of the email indicating their 24 hour cancelation policy. I refused to talk to them on the phone as I wanted all communication documented. They stopped responding to me and never confirmed that I wouldn't be charged a $400 cancelation fee. This interaction caused me so much anxiety and has been the worst customer service experience I've ever had. I still don't know, if I will be charged the cancelation fee or not. read more

Went in for a color and cut last week. 2.5 hours later I walked out not noticing much of a difference, so I called to reschedule a fix (if I'm going to be paying top dollar for a service, I want to see that something was done to my hair!) They were nothing but nice when rescheduling, saying that it would be free of charge. When I went back, the color was fixed but once my hair was shampooed I basically was left out to dry- literally. The stylist who colored my hair had another client come in, so she handed me off to someone else, who was clearly annoyed that she had to finish the job. She roughly shampooed me, then dried one small section of hair so that I could see if I liked the color, then handed me the hair dryer and said, "You're all set. You can now finish up yourself". I am not a demanding person in any way, but I felt pretty uncomfortable in this situation. I'm paying over $230 for hair services and I'm going to sit awkwardly in a hair salon blow drying my own hair? This is a very cute salon with many services, but I did not have a great experience. I would recommend schedulers to allot more time for stylists to do their job before another client walks in. I also would recommend designated people to already expect to finish the job if this situation came up again so that a client isn't left to fend for themselves. read more

I had no intention of writing this review. I chalked up my previous $500 (ish) appointment as a loss and a bad fit. It was a tough pill to swallow but I'm not much for leaving negative reviews. Overall, the stylist here genuinely seemed like she had better things to do than my hair. I had waited months for this appointment only to be told that my hair couldn't get that blonde in one sitting. This could be true and I respect that but I ended up walking out with weirdly chunky gold brown highlights. She also spent all of 5 min on a haircut that I later found out was $95. I was stunned. I was hurried out because a dude showed up. Not sure why I paid the price for bad scheduling. Fast forward to this week, I decide to try and get my hair done again for the first time since this experience. Blonde like I like it and since summer is here (ish). My new stylist informs me that since my highlights were so bad that again I can't get that blonde because she essentially has to fix it first. I am also apparently not a candidate for extensions because despite only spending 5 min on my cut, the layers are so uneven that I now have to wait for those parts to grow. Sort of ruins my whole summer look. This news caused me to want to warn others. Please save your money. This salon is very much all about location/prestige and a little less about how you feel when you walk out. There are plenty of bougie salons in this city that can do both, get you one that can. read more

Wow and wow! My teenage son's last hair cut went terribly wrong, so it was time for a change. From the moment I called Solo to make an appointment, I was impressed. The receptionist, Ashley, was so sweet and informative as I asked a TON of questions about the salon and staff. She really took the time to listen to my concerns and suggested I book an appointment with their senior stylist/owner Michael. I can't say enough about the positive vibe you get immediately upon meeting Michael. After I showed him a few pictures of the look my son wanted, he took the time to evaluate my son's hair and identify what would/would not work and why. The salon space is very hip, cool and clean, even their coffee was great. This place definitely takes customer service very seriously, and these days that's pretty rare! I've been going to Katy for my hair for over 3 years now and I've followed her from salons in Lincoln Park, to River North, now to the West Loop. Not only is she fantastic at actually cutting hair, but she's incredibly thoughtful in remembering what we tried/changed the time before and bringing that up each time. She also has a really good eye and sense of creativity for trying out new styles or changing things up - I've come to trust her completely and she's always done an amazing job. I've been a loyal customer of Solo for over 3 years. I've always gone to their Madison location with Melissa (best long haircuts ever!) and mixing in stylists for balayage What I love is their consistent commitment to quality stylist. As a working mom of two you're sometimes stuck grabbing available times vs consistently booking 3 months out. It's nice to be able to trust you'll get someone good every time. Their online booking is great, their front office (oftentimes the worst part of a salon experience) is trained, nice professional and care. I feel like it's because they're part of the team too. This location is beautiful. Big, airy, spacious and decor is on point. They also have a bar menu from the restaurant in the building!! Anyway. It's another great Solo location and I'll be back. Sitting in the barber chair there feels like a sophisticated trip back in time...an obsessively curated MixCloud playlist is playing on a completely separate sound/speaker system from the rest of the salon...some days its feeling earth, wind, and fire...others Bob Seger...but my fav days are local EDM superstar gene farris of whom I would NEVER have known had it not been part of the experience you get when you come here. You wanna chill?? There's your choice of Bourbon on the counter...you want coffee/tea/creme??..right around the corner. The experience is FANTASTIC! Now let's talk about haircuts...somehow it gets even better??!! for those of you blessed men out there with Alec Baldwin-like hair, I hate you :) Reality, as you age, is having that little awkward balding place towards the back/top of your head that continuously beckons your bangs to recede backward towards them so they can be miserable together. I had just accepted that this was life before I started seeing Michael here at Solo. Somehow, he takes ALL the bad aspects of the hair/hairline you've been given and totally minimizes them so the good parts of your hair can shine. He spends SOOOO much time with every little tiny piece of hair that I always take a picture afterwards because there's no way I would spend that amount of time on my own hair but do appreciate the artwork he creates while I'm there. As you're watching him cut your hair, there's really no other word I can think of except for #PRECISION. So we've talked about the vibe, the actual product...lets talk about the person. You will NOT find a cooler person than Michael...in high school, you were probably either: the nerd that did everyones homework, the reclusive but brilliant computer geek, or one of the normals...Michael however, was probably that guy's guy who was cool with everyone, knew more about music than you but let you keep talking so you felt good, had WAY more Shorty game than you did, but still encouraged you to keep asking people out, jocks might've even hated him because their girlfriends liked him more, and he probably drove a Harley during the week and a beemer on the wkend (just to keep you guessing). Got the picture? More seriously though, you can't go here for too long before you start getting attached. He'll laugh when you laugh, cry when you cry...you look fwd to catching up with him to see how he did in the last marathon, or which concert he and his gorgeous wife Kristine just came back from...or how his kids are doing at school. Or you can just keep to yourself each time and he'll respect that...just know you're missing out on something. You can come here simply looking for a haircut but if you don't have any prior chip on your shoulder or preconceived notion of the West Loop and our amazing small businesses here, you'll experience one of the most high end AND amazingly friendly places in Chicago that's more interested in a relationship than a quick buck! And having been here successfully for decades, I think their reputation precedes them much more than the one or two star crazies you'll get from Yelp-trolls every once in a while. Maybe I'm old school but when I call to make an appointment at a salon I expect to speak to a live person. This is the only salon that you have to text back and forth a minimum of 6 times. I was a long time customer of Salon 1800, 25 years to be exact. My daughter asked me to support a local salon in the West Loop where she lived. When I went to book my appointment it took me at least 6 texts messages back and forth to get it scheduled. My final text was I needed to cancel. I have a screen shot with date and time of me cancelling the appointment, and their response asking me if I would like to reschedule and I did not respond to the final text. I am now being charged a $100 no show. First they said I texted to a dead end number. Now the story is I called after the text to say do not cancel it. Don't know what to tell you outside of arguing with a customer is not a good idea, especially is a servicing business. I wish I could give them a negative star they truly earned it. You know a blowdry is good when it lasts for days. Washington's decor is warm and inviting. I really enjoy all the natural light in the salon. Added perk: wine bar in the lower level. Check out Press Room for a glass of wine after your service. I tell everyone to try this salon, whether its their first location on Madison or now Washington. I visited Solo Salon twice when I was looking for a new barber. It is easily the most expensive haircut I have ever had, and the experience was mediocre. The end result was decent enough I booked a third appointment since it's hard to find someone competent to cut your hair. After booking and confirming the appointment, I kept my schedule clear and trekked all the way to the salon in the far west loop. I checked in with no issue and wait while he helped a buddy trim his beard, pushing my appointment back. After waiting 15 minutes, he finished and took a walk in over me, claiming my appointment was never booked. Even after showing them the booking email and confirmation texts from their system, they simply shrugged their shoulders and sent me into the cold. For a $60 haircut, I expect far more than this. If you do book, be sure to call and confirm before making the journey. read more

I know I didn't since I hated my hair the first time. Paid nearly 300$ the first time to have my hair look the exact same. Fast forward four months, I get a text from the salon saying I missed my next appointment and they'd be charging me 50$. No text message reminder about the appointment! But they could certainly text me to tell me they're taking my money LOL Complete scam. I tried repeatedly to call and get a human to speak with for the whole day, to no avail.
