Just moved to river north and needed a new colorist/stylist. Booked an appointment with Sam at Salon 833. The salon is bright and clean and was busy but not chaotic. The ladies at reception couldn't have been more welcoming and Sam was right on time. From the start he was attentive and I felt in good hands; and the results were amazing, he did a root touch up but it was way outgrown because of my transition to the city and he gave me a fresh trim that did not cut too much but somehow brought new life and energy into my hair. I really wanted to like this salon. I booked here specifically due to a friend going here but I received the WORST haircut of my life from ANNA DALEY. To make this as short as possible everything that was done during my "luxury" appointment: - stylist 10+ minutes late, no notification from the front desk that she would be late. The salon has a late policy which apparently doesn't apply to stylists - she shows up in a hoodie, WITH the hood ON which she left on the entire appointment to cover her 2 inch PLUS roots and dirty/ faded yoga pants - she told me her morning was "rough". It was 12 in the afternoon? Morning was long gone - the ENTIRE appointment, she did not have me facing the mirror. She had me pointed in the direction the entire time to look at another stylist doing hair and did not move me - she has me slouch down to cut my hair instead of moving me because she stated she's "short" I'm only 5'7, hard to believe I would be her tallest client - she kept making comments about hair length. Asking me if my hair grows fast and told me to look down and said oh I know it seems like a lot of hair, but it's not. Then after my haircut was done, she didn't even do a 360 of my hair. She just pointed me to the side and said look. It's still towards the middle of your back and she spent more time curling my hair than actually cutting it. I thought everything was ok and I didn't think much of my length as she curled my hair pretty strongly. Well after I washed my hair I noticed how she completely ruined my hair. My hair was LONG and she cut off all my hair AND there is no symmetry as you can see from the photos. I waited a little bit cause maybe I thought oh it's just in my head, but then I had someone take videos of my hair to realize how bad it was. So I called to make a complaint with management and at first I was pretty lenient cause I understand how things work, but it took over two days to come to a solution. They kept asking me to come in to assess my hair and I'm just like why would I come in? I'm sending you videos and pictures like my hair is extremely uneven. They said they would like to make it up to me by conditioning and I'm like that doesn't bring my length back? My hair is completely GONE. I told them I wouldn't want to go back because the only way to fix it is to cut off all my hair and I don't want it cut so I asked for a refund. The owner of the salon told me that I could not have a refund because it's part of their policy so I brought up the website and I said OK can you let me know where on your website it states that you don't give refunds? She couldn't. Long story short, she ended up trying to record our conversation which I told her I did not consent to. She ended up giving me a refund AFTER I told her I was going to make a review but ANNA DALEY still kept my $20 tip as I sent it via Venmo. I would not recommend. The heart photo is my hair BEFORE ANNA DALEY BOTCHED my hair. All one length and I end up leaving with a butchered mullet. No symmetry. Appalling that this was a $130 hair cut!!!!!! I have never had such a BAD haircut from what is supposed to be a luxury salon from an "EXPERIENCED" stylist. read more

The staff is very friendly, but, even after showing several photos and verbally explaining what I wanted, they ignored my statement for layering and also CUT OVER TWO INCHES SHORTER than I said to. It's like they freestyled and completely ignored the entire conversation we had about what I actually wanted. I asked for layers and framing around my face and hair that landed at my collarbone (and at the shoulder when curled and dry). NONE OF WHAT I ASKED FOR HAPPENED. I left with a typical bob cut, no layers and curtain bangs. To make things worse, my chair was turned sideways to the mirror when they were cutting so I couldn't even see what was happening to stop them. Respect wasn't given to customer desires. Now, I've got a CUT I DESPISE that will take months to grow out and am out $80+. read more

After doing EXTENSIVE research on all installation methods, brands of hair, salons, and stylists I decided I wanted to go to Salon 833 and have a consultation with Giselle for the hand tied beaded weft method. AIt was my first time with extensions, but I had a go big or go home mentality as I didn't want to spend a lot of money to get something I only sort of wanted. My hair was barely scraping the edge of my shoulders and I wanted 20 inches of luscious, flowing tresses. Just a heads up, while my hair was short, my previous cut had been done with a straight razor which left me with a lot of layers that were key in terms of blending. If I had a straight bob at that length and she needed to layer it I would have needed to go shorter. Giselle is a genius, but she's not a magician. Obviously. Anyways, she said it was going to be a lot of hair and a lot of rows (5). For me, that was going to mean diligent brushing, learning how to style it, and a significant investment in quality hair products. I told I was game and promised not to let her down! She gave me a quote, and after a couple of deep breaths I gave the final okay and paid my 50% deposit. I had an appointment the next day to color match my hair to the extensions, and my installation was set for two weeks from then. I believe I got lucky with my appointment timing because she had a cancellation. She's pretty in demand so.. your timing might be different. Installation was super simple. It took three hours and poof! I was transformed into my sexy Russian spy alter ego! Seriously, I have never felt hotter. We cut straight bangs with it and it's really chefs kiss. Giselle is phenomenal, and the entire experience at salon 833 was wonderful. From the moment I walked in, the gentleman at the front desks was charming and witty in a way that just makes it feel nice to be in his presence. Bottom line, if you want extensions in Chicago- go there and see Giselle. read more

Love Love Love Salon 833! Corrine will make you look and feel beautiful. She is a true expert when it comes to color; especially with blonde hair. I've had my share of rushed/uneven highlights, brassiness and too many shortcuts by other hair dressers but not with Corrine. I am extremely happy with her hair cutting ability, too. I love the long layered look and she does a fantastic job of blending the layers so I don't look like I have two different haircuts combined into one. Love coming here every other month for my bi monthly hair cut. Ashley E is easily the best hair stylist I've ever had. She specializes in men's cuts and absolutely kills it. I have cowlick on my head that resembles a mixture of a tumble weed from an old western movie and the Amazonian rain forest. Not sure how Ashley does it (chain saw, lawn mower, hedge trimmers, pixie dust?) but every time I leave looking absolutely flawless. I will continue to come back as long as I live in Chicago! I had an appointment here for Saturday afternoon. This was the second of two. We did not discuss what we would be doing for the next appointment. My mother passed away unexpectedly on Thursday and I had to leave town. Unfortunately I wasn't in a mental state to remember to cancel the reservation. They charged my card $200. I explained the situation to them and they said they would give me a credit back to have another appointment. I would not be returning back to Chicago due to the trauma my family had gone through. For an establishment to charge $200 for a cancellation is absolutely ridiculous, especially due to the circumstances. I DO NOT recommend this place whatsoever. This Salon is fantastic! I have now been to Jen twice and she has done an AMAZING job both times with my hair. To be very honest, my hair cuts are very few and far in between, and I've been in Chicago now 11 years. In those years I've been to many salons and none have stuck with me as I've never been thoroughly impressed with the results and sometimes even the person cutting my hair. Jen is excellent at what she does, and is genuinely a friendly person. The salon itself is beautiful, bright, and the rest of the staff is very friendly and accommodating. For those taking public transit it is a block from the blue line, and plenty of bus lines cross at Milwaukee/Grand/Halsted. The cost is fair and in line with Chicago prices. I've been on the hunt for a stylist since moving to Chicago in September 2013. All the other salons I have been to have been just okay. None of them warranted writing a Yelp! review, either positive or negative. Until now. I chose Salon 833 because I just moved to the area and wanted a neighborhood salon. Considering I probably spend more time in salons than my home, I needed to find something close and comfortable. I made an appointment online and promptly received a notification that Becca would be my stylist for a full highlight. I am always skeptical of coloring my hair due to a really, really traumatizing bleach job about 5 years ago. But when I met Becca, I could tell she was a pro and she "gets it." Within two minutes of meeting Becca, my mind was put to ease. She really looked at my hair and asked what I liked and didn't like about my current situation. She definitely knows what she's doing! She also timed the foils JUST right. That is definitely an art. After she foiled the last piece of hair, they were ready to come off. (I love when I don't have to sit there looking like an alien for a long time.) The color came out great and she gave me a great blowout, too. Everything about my experience was delightful. I've been seeing her for a couple years now and I can honestly say each time, she brings something new and I leave loving my hair even more than the time before. She's so fun to talk to and she has incredible technique. I always felt self conscious about my hair but Brittany has made my hair look so much healthier and smoother. my hair has never looked this good and I feel much more confident. Brittany actually listens to what you have to say and does what she genuinely thinks looks best for each individual person's face. I got a great haircut from Tracy. She listened to what I wanted, offered some non-pushy advice, and then gave me the haircut I asked for. She gave me very neat layers, without making them choppy. Sometimes when I ask for layers, I end up with two levels in my hair - like a mop sitting on top of long hair. Tracy blended the layers really well. I have never really treated myself to a salon nor have I had one person in charge of my hair maintenance (shameful I know. I'm the worst at keeping up with the routine so trims from hair cuttery have sufficed). But after recently moving to the city I knew I needed to have a regimen and do it right. I tried Salon 833 because it was walking distance and had raving reviews. And it lives up to all the hype. Becca was my stylist and she's wonderful! She's laid back, she listens, gives good advice and doesn't just tell me what I want to hear. For the first time, I felt like someone understood my hair concerns and what I do and don't like. So often I've had stylists try to convince me I'd like my hair a certain way. Becca listened me and then worked wonders on my hair in the exact way I had hoped. 99% of the time I leave salons, I put my hair in a bun or pony tail immediately because I hate how it's been styled or hate the "fresh cut" look. Becca did such a nice job blow drying and styling my hair - that for the first time I left with my hair down and even ran errands in public to show it off :) Such a great feeling!! One of the worst haircuts I've ever received. I have shoulder length hair and needed a simple trim to clean up the ends. I told my stylist to cut an inch or so off and not to cut any long layers in. Instead I got a choppy, layered, 90's hairstyle with as much as 3-4 inches cut off in certain parts. By the time it was done, there was no point in trying to fix it as I didn't want any more cut off. I felt my stylist was inexperienced and I can't even find her on the salon's website, but I was limited to two stylist choices because of the GiltCity voucher I had purchased. Disappointed with this salon, was hoping to find a new go-to stylist and instead left with a haircut that will take months to grow out. read more
