This salon is outdated and has become so focused on money that they ignore what clients want and position newbie stylists as if they were senior stylists. I booked a partial balayage with a Level 3 stylist, only to be told by the stylist they were a Level 1. The manager assured me this was actually a Level 3 and their "go-to" balayage (unbeknowst to the stylist themselves) so I proceeded. Instead of a lovely balayage that added pieces to my existing ombre / balayage look, the less experienced stylist put in thick blonde chunky highlights that were coppery in hue so my whole top of my head didn't match the bottom at all. After letting the staff know I wasn't happy, I was booked a visit with the owner. She was extremely pushy and I had to be more vocal than I wanted about showing her pictures of hair similar to mine, which she disregarded "because it's curled" (cool, I can curl my hair too). She AGREED my hair was too blonde and didn't look like the balayage photos. After SHE SHOWED me several photos that were actually what I expected, she promised to fix it, but REFUSED to tone the coppery and too blonde hair down. I TRUSTED her that she would fix it (despite being very pushy, talking over me, and literally telling me all she care about was "finances"). Unsurprisingly I walked out with still too blonde, 1999 highlights that didn't match my natural color at all and will grow out quickly. Her advice? "Book an appointment in 4 weeks". I find as my hair gets thinner and grayer, it also becomes more and more problematic. For that reason a great haircut and more frequent haircut is no longer a luxury, it's a necessity. I am so lucky to have found Nicky Calascibetta at Art and Science in the West Loop. Nicky is a savant with hair, minimizing shortfalls, and effective with the shears. I always feel 100% better about myself after a haircut from Nicky. He always listens to whatever crazy concerns I may have, he is great to chat with, but most importantly he is so confident with the scissors that you can tell he knows exactly what he is doing. I generally am not sure about haircut until the next day, and with Nicky there is never a missed hair, an uneven snip, or an eyebrow that was missed. I never miss booking an appointment with Nicky at Art and Science West Loop before that big event or important interview. read more

I was disappointed with my service the last time I was in. I paid $110 for my stylist to cut my dirty hair dry without a wash. My hair is long, but I expected a shampoo and blow dry with this service especially for the price. The element of skipping the shampoo was not discussed. The cut was okay, but if I'm going to be paying these high west loop prices I expect better. I had an event to go to later that day and had to go home and wash/dry my hair myself. I will not be returning. There are so many salons in the city that offer better customer care. Also, do not drive. There is zero parking and valet is $13. read more

I had long hair and was wanting to go short so I thought I would go see a Director level stylist. I came in with unwashed hair and the stylist made me feel uncomfortable by being like "did you want me to wash it? Cuz, that's going to take time away from your cut." So I was like, "I guess not. Idk. Your call?". The cut I received was okay... but not great. The ends are uneven, hair texture now feels dry and over razored, and theres a random short chop on only the left side of my face which looks like a mistake. Overall, not a fantastic, skillful haircut. And bummed that I came in with dirty hair and left with dirty hair (had to wear a hat the rest of the day). I didn't really get the "salon after glow" experience I was hoping for. I will be looking for a new salon, and you should too. read more

Long story short, the front desk is absolutely horrendous to deal with as well, the manager never showed up to remedy the situation, and I left without getting a color and paying for $13 of valet parking for no reason! I will NEVER GO HERE AGAIN! They are a bunch of brat girls who oblige the world by showing up to work! You'd think that at a place with prices as high as they are that their colorists could manage a simple root touch up. Especially with someone who has no history of using box dye, and who brought plenty of inspiration pictures as well as specific instructions from the hairstylist who initially dyed their hair (who sadly lives in another state.) But no. Let me also just say before I begin- I'm a gen z college student who works in customer service so it takes A LOT for me to not hide from conflict. After being rebooked multiple times I came in for a simple root touch up. I had copper hair that was fading and roots that had grown out so I showed all my pictures and explained I wanted a simple touch up and brightening of the ends just to get that copper to stand out again. When I left my hair was like 4 shades darker than when I walked in, my roots where 2 different colors, neither of which were the same color as the ends, and my hair was no longer red but dark brown. Obviously I was incredibly upset as my hair was unblended and 3 different colors, none of which were the color I asked for, but I decided to give them a chance to make it right. I came back the next day (with specific suggestions from the hairstylist in MA that I trust) and was told she couldn't do what I asked. She offered highlights instead. I explained that I do not want highlights, I want my color corrected and she said she didn't feel comfortable doing what I asked. Since I have zero faith in their abilities I left and called to get a refund since the service they provided wouldn't have met anyone's expectations- if I had lied about what I've done with my hair or been unclear or maybe even JUST gotten the wrong shade but my hair was all one color maybe I could understand them not being willing to refund me. But my hair is 3 DIFFERENT COLORS and I'm pretty sure NO ONE wants that. They still have not given me a refund and now I will have to pay someone more competent a lot of money to do color corrections and use bleach on my hair because its now so dark (which I never needed to use before) damaging my wallet and my hair. Never go to Art+ Science. Don't let the name and pricing fool you like they did me. read more

Well Laura and I really like art and science in the west loop. Everybody there is very friendly. They are very professional. They follow up with you if your hairstylist or colorist is going to have an expected absence. And they'll make an effort to try to accommodate you with someone else that same day and if not they'll help you reschedule for another appointment. Oh another thing I forgot to mention everyone is like just crazy trained. Not only do they have training before getting to art and science but they're trying to gun once they're hired as a stylist. The stylist works on you and then the assistant. They didn't use any products to blow dry my hair and now I have very visible damage. This place is expensive for the mediocre job they do. I have never posted a review on here but feel this was important to share as I have super thick wavy hair that's very hard to cut. I had read all the reviews on Yelp, had a lengthy consultation with senior stylist Julia at West Loop and still got the exact haircut I did not want at Art & Science West Loop. Moreover, this haircut was not the type of cut that's easily fixable, I could feel long jagged pieces hanging out from below the cut (that were missed) after I washed my hair after the cut and it visibly looked longer in the front than the back (not on purpose). I was very vocal that I did not like an overly-layered cut as it adds volume to my course/frizzy hair, nor did I like razor cutting or over-texturizing. Well, except for the razor, I got all of the above. And the stylist used quite a bit of thinning sheers on my hair, which I also said I did not like. I had to get my hair recut after only three weeks, and spend over $100 to fix this, as I could not handle looking at my frazzled uneven hair anymore, and the stylist had to take 1/2 inch straight across the bottom to get rid of the heavily textured ends. I just can't believe this happened, after having a long consultation with photos and being very explicit about what I wanted and did not want. The new stylist who cut my hair took a photo of my hair wet, combed down in the back to show me what happened, to show that it was visibly cut on a slant, much longer on the right and it was indeed longer in the front than the back. In addition, it was confirmed, there were long pieces hanging from the bottom (not on purpose). If you have super thick hair and want light layers, I do not advise this place. The salon did comp me for the price of the Art & Science cut ($100) but that does not cover for the six month grow out period I now face, the cost of the other cut ($110) I had to get to try and repair this, etc. read more

Row is fabulous. She not only is meticulous but she is honest and upfront. I came to her for a color correction and I was hesitant to let anyone touch my hair. The results were not exactly what we had expected but she didn't shy away and instead sent me home with product and a plan to get to my end goal. Instead of gentle peach highlights on my pixie I have got spotty neon orange leopard all over my brown short cut. Demanded refund to go fix it in another place and instead was only provided with the same girl who completely refused to understand or admit that what she did was a compete mess. I never write yelp reviews, but I want to yell from the rooftops how excellent Christin is! I cannot recommend her enough. Haircuts with Christin are consistently a phenomenal experience. Beyond being an expert in terms of her hair abilities, she really has knack for reading your vibe and helping you get the look that will feel right, even if you struggle to articulate what you want. I always leave our appointments feeling euphoric and confident. This salon is expensive, but SO worth it for me to leave feeling I look like my best self, in a way that's true to me and how I feel about my gender. read more

Art + Science is a high end Lincoln Park salon, so you get great quality service, but a steep price. A basic cut starts at $75 and an all over color with no highlights starts at $65. Color touch ups to your roots and part line are cheaper at $35. Alyssa does my color and does a fantastic job. She manages to make me look good even though I am completely gray at 30 and have weird chunks of coloring due to bad box dye jobs at home. I absolutely recommend her. COVID changed all aspects of life and that included some services listed on Art + Sci website. My wife went in for a bang trim, usually takes 5 min, normally cost 10$, leave a nice tip, and repeat. When she left for the door after the 5 min bang trim this time, she was originally told that would be a 65$ haircut, then subsequently reduced to 30$. Shout out to Margeaux who fixed up my mop and made me shine again :) This location has barbers and stylists with an interesting blend of modern and rustic decor. The Randolph location just celebrated their one-year anniversary, so I walked in to an inviting spread of celebratory cookies. They stock Bumble&bumble products and the owner also founded American Crew. Overall, I'd recommend giving them a try if you're in the West Loop (or close to their other Chicago locations)! read more

Long story short my hairstylist of 5 years went on MIA on me. Leaving me to find a a new hairstylist. Luckily I stumbled upon Christins page on IG. I looked through her pictures and was like she has to cut my hair! When I called to schedule my appointment the staff was cool and helpful. They asked what days and time worked best for me. I scheduled my appointment 3 weeks in advanced because she is a pretty busy person. Also, you can be put on a waiting list if there is a cancellation. Which I thought was convenient if you are available for that day. Anyway, Christin is so cool, down to earth chick. There wasn't any awkward silence during my haircut, conversation was made. I let her know what I was looking for in my haircut. Honestly I told her I liked her recent haircut and went with that. I needed some change but she still kept the concept I was looking for. She went ahead and styled it and I felt brand new! I let her know I had been looking for a hair colorist. She introduced me to Penny and she gave me a quick consultation on what she would do as far as coloring my hair. Seriously these two ladies to great work ! With that being said I'm scheduling my appointment for next month with Penny. While I was waiting, I overheard the front desk staff make reminder phone calls for appointments. I didn't receive a call for a reminder NOT that I forgot but what if I did. So that is only reason I took one star off. Other then that they have great stylists here! read more

I can't say enough good things about this place. I have never had bad hair coming out of this salon. I get cut color by Penny and Gabby who both do amazing jobs and are very sweet and helpful. I have been able to trust them completely with my hair because of medical issues and they are awesome! Kristen and Margo are really the best at cuts I have lived in Hollywood and SF and hands down this is better than Rodeo drive (without the palm trees). The salon also has reasonable prices and the same quality as I have seen in top rated salons in all the big cities. I waited a few days after my cut to write this review b/c I wanted to make sure that I really liked it. And I do! I stumbled upon this place after asking a random person at J. Crew where she got her haircut, and she told me about this place. I called and made an appt with Margaux since she was in the middle range for experience and price. Honestly, Margaux really knows hair! I didn't have much expectations going in, just wanted to even out some layers and get a trim. Margaux gave me a great cut. She meticulously went through each section of my hair, carefully snipping out pieces to take out the weight, instead of just going thru and cutting layers like most. At first I was thinking that she was cutting off more hair than I wanted, but after she was done I was surprised at how well my hair layed without any product and how easily it was to style by myself (I don't do any fancy styling but it still looked great). The best part is that I really felt good in this haircut and she said that my style wouldn't change that much but I would definitely feel a difference, and that was absolutely true. She also did a great job on my bangs which I'm very picky about. I've been to at least 10 different places in Chicago, none of which I went back to b/c of how badly they cut my bangs. She understood exactly what I wanted without a lot of pictures but more importantly, she knew what would look good with my hair texture and length. Another side note is that she was very attentive, without being distracted talking to other stylists or people walking by. I'll definitely be back to see her again! Highly recommended. read more

Generally I love Art & Science. I've been going to Rae (waxes) for a year and love her. I also frequently visit for haircuts and beard trims. Today I made an appointment for the same day. However, my toddler then woke up sick. So I called one hour after making the appointment to see if I could reschedule in a few days. At that point, I was told I'd be charged for half of the days services no matter what. I would understand had I booked weeks ago and thus leaving the staff with no chance to fill the appointments. Chicago is filled with great salons and talented hair stylists, and Art + Science is no exception. But there is one thing about Art + Science that makes it exceptional - and that you can actually get an appointment within a week. I have found many awesome stylists for my curly hair, from Cally's Curls, Maxine, Sparrow, Pennylane, etc, but so often I have to schedule my appointment weeks in advance. When I come here i see Aggie, who is amazing with curly hair and charges a very reasonable price. One thing should be noted, though, is that Art +Science doesn't seem to focus on blowouts. At first I thought it was just one cut, but when I went to other stylists I noticed they all give sort of thrown together blowouts at the end of their cuts. If you're someone who plans her haircut right before a special event, like I do, this might be some relevant information. read more

My visit will be my first time and last time. I booked my appointment a couple weeks out for a cut and color. It turns out, I was only booked for the color. I never received a confirmation email or phone call which would have helped me catch the mistake in advance... they couldn't fit me in for the cut but they apologized. The colorist said she'd check for a cancellation after my dye was applied but then she just disappeared and I didn't see her for the rest of the appointment. Now I'm glad I didn't get a cut here, because the service I received was really disheartening. No one came to check on my hair while it was processing or communicate next steps to me. After waiting a while with foils on my head, someone new came up to me to remove the foils, but the colorist didn't bother to introduce me to the shampoo/stylist person, they were just gone. I had communicated the look I was going for, but it was clear no one cared or was listening because no recommendations were made. No one even walked me to the reception to pay... TLDR Version: No one cared enough to listen to what I wanted or check on me throughout the appointment. I felt really depressed afterwards... I call and talk to a lady Kim who was as rude as possible to me and told me she doesn't care what the groupon says..."this is how we do business" if this is how you do business, don't have a groupon. Everyone has a signature trademark. For some it's a tattoo, statement jewelry piece, or a bold scent. For me it's my thick, long, dark hair and I am incredibly stubborn when it comes to style, cut....and color. Specifically...I don't color and used to think it was a waste of money. Thanks to Gilt City, I was able to finally find a good reason to get a balyage, namely because I was able to pay $75 for $125 worth of services...which goes a very long way for a quality full day at the salon. I will say, if it wasn't for the Gilt offer, I probably wouldn't have taken the jump to color my hair, because I'm stubborn. But am I ever so happy that I did! Art & Science West loop is truly a luxurious experience with a great, professional staff from reception to my stylist Lexi, finished by Cairo. My artist Lexi is a color expert and I would not trust anyone else, going forward, with my haircolor. First, she took me through a thorough and professional consultation which guided me to a place of comfort for my new hairstyle. She's so friendly and personable that my two hour visit felt like 20 minutes. She REALLY knew her stuff and educated me on keeping my color beyond the first week. Then, a fabulous apprentice, Cairo, went above and beyond an average blow dry and gave me a full blow out which by other experiences, is much more than she had to. She was meticulous, blowing section by section, into beautiful waves....easily worth another $50 all because she wanted me to LOVE my new style...mission accomplished! Now THAT is customer service. Because of the red carpet level service, quality, and comfort I will recommend my entire network to none other than. Art + Science West Loop. From the minute you walk through the door, you know you will get an exceptional experience, leave feeling confident and good about the money you work hard to spend, which in my opinion, all women and men deserve from time to time. I've been going to Art & Science for about a year for color and cuts. I got married in September and all my bridesmaids and my mother had our hair done at Art & Science. I personally saw Christin who did my hair and makeup. We did a trial of both before which I was super glad. Not that a lot changed, but I was just more comfortable with the process. The other girls saw Heather Rae, Julia, Jason, Jeannie and Patrick. They all did a fabulous job and our stayed in all day and night. I worked with Ashley to schedule everything and she was wonderful about getting our appointment straight even after I had to move all of them three weeks prior to the wedding. The salon even had some breakfast set up for us. I definitely recommend Art & Science for wedding hair and everyday hair. I normally see Julia for cut and Penny for color and they both do a fabulous job. Thanks! read more

I just saw that art + science won a Best in the City Readers' Choice award-thingy from the Reader. Sir, I beg your pardon.* I keep hearing great things (even on Yelp) about art + science and thus have been lured by their sirens' song not once but *twice*. Both times my hairs were cut in a perfectly cromulent way, but the whole hair enchilada (ewwwww) was certainly not worth the somewhat extravagant price. I have loads of bushy, wavy hair so it usually takes forever to cut and it is always a loud and boring affair. I expect it, and this place was no exception. I can't imagine that you would get out of there in under an hour. But more importantly, as I, you know, *didn't go to hair school*, I prefer to leave it the professionals to make the tough calls. With both stylists, I was constantly asked "is this okay?" each step of the way, which sprinted way past "considerate and attentive to my needs" all the way to "maybe I should be compensated for my creative contributions to this production." Two other things of note that didn't fit anywhere else: 1) The receptionist fed my meter for me when I asked and even volunteered quarters when I was digging through my purse trying to find some. Which was really great cuz the whole thing took two hours. 2) One of the stylists asked me what products I used, and when I said I didn't know, something I bought at CVS, she actually said, "Wow... I don't know the last time I brought products at a drug store." Duh, you work at a salon, snobby. *Very brief but seemingly necessary background information: I hate getting my hair cut or sitting in a salon for any length of time. I try to stay away from writing negative reviews after only one visit - but sometimes one bad haircut is all it takes. Bought the $40 Groupon for an "$80 value haircut". From wash to style (style meaning throwing some product in and blow drying for about 30 seconds) the haircut took 15 minutes. I've had $10 haircuts that lasted longer and looked better. I can go in with no idea of what i want (just knowing that i NEED a hair cut) and he can ask me a few questions about my routine and cut it and it's fabulous and absolutely perfect!
