Great location, food, wine and staff! Been here a few times and always leave happy. This spot is known for their paella's and great wine. One of the few restaurants I've gone to that has squash blossoms on a regular basis. They change the menu a few times a year to make sure to everything is fresh and in season. The staff is very knowledgeable about wine and happy to answer questions as well as recommended wine that complement your meal. They have a nice patio area and live music Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Parking can be tricky sometimes but it is well worth finding a spot. Definitely stop in if in the area! read more

Got invited here by a couple of friends visiting and looked good online so I was excited. When we got there the place was busy, but the wait wasn't bad. There was a girl performing some live music which was cool and fit the vibe. We we seated outside but it was plenty warm and still got a fresh breeze. Once we got seated we ordered a handful of shareable like the mixed board (cheese/meat), brussel sprouts, paella, and the Sun fried tomato and pesto flatbread. I ordered the lamb burger for myself since I was eyeing it when I checked it out online. Everything looked great and tasted ok overall. I do by have anything overly negative to say about any of the items we ordered, but everything we tried needed salt. The lack of salt just made the flavors a bit bland. I could taste the potential in everything, but just needed that extra oomph. The flatbread could be less doughy with some more crisp, but that's just what I think of when I see flatbread on a menu. Our server was great throughout our stay and was able to chat it up with the wine drinkers at our table. I came here with a group of 24 for my wedding rehearsal lunch and it was great! I lodged an event request through email and was taken care of promptly. Cindy at Solterra was our coordinator and the day of service was impeccable. We originally had the outside area booked, but the heat was too much. Cindy offered us the Barrel Room (inside) to escape the heat and transferred all the tables and chairs. The flexibility was great. As for the food, everything was tasty. Meeting other people who are passionate about service always makes me deeply happy. Ian has been there 8 or 9 years but you would think he was the new guy based on how attentive he is. It's just natural to him, because he actually cares about your experience. Someone staying that long says a lot about a company, let alone a restaurant, which is some of the most transient types of jobs ever. Kudos to ownership and management. I'm glowing about it! I've been coming here for 8 years. It is a great neighborhood hangout that is equally friendly to visitors. You'll always have a good conversation at the bar whether solo or a group. I absolutely love this restaurant. It has an amazing ambience, lovely staff, delicious food and wines, various gluten free options, and some of the best happy hour in Leucadia! I came here with my boyfriend and we both split the artichoke flatbread, calamari, and patatas bravas and it was plenty of food for the two of us! The patatas bravas are some of the best I've had in North County and they are truly Spanish style! They are dressed with a creamy aioli sauce (I recommend getting an extra side) and are only $5 on happy hour. My favorite thing on the menu by far is the calamari which already comes gluten free (though you would never know). The calamari was fried perfectly and was paired with two delicious dipping sauces. The artichoke flatbread was to die for and it came at a decent price on happy hour ($10). ALSO the ambience is so nice it is right on the 101 and they have a wine tasting room surrounded by wine barrels. The restaurant offers outdoor and indoor seating which are both equally enjoyable. Lastly our server Kristin was so sweet, knowledgeable of the menu, consistently tended to our needs, and made our dining experience memorable and as enjoyable as possible. This place was very nice! They have two sides, one to the right that's more sit down and the other to the left that's more casual. The night we came was supposed to have live jazz music so we opted to sit in that room. (Unfortunately he never showed up) Happy hour was a great deal! They had $6 glasses of Chardonnay which I got and it was absolutely wonderful, I'm definitely coming back just for that. Checking in on yelp my boyfriend and I got a buy one get one free flight. They unfortunately couldn't honor both flights for free since we were at the same table, but at least it was something! The flights were also very good! I really enjoyed every glass of wine I had here. For food we got a bunch of appetizers which were all outstanding. The calamari was cooked perfect and so were the muscles! The muscles could of had garlic in it, but they were still pretty good. The paella was so good! I got the Del Mar and it had plenty of fresh seafood in it. The flavor was outstanding and everything was cooked perfect! I really enjoyed the fresh veggies and peppers in it as well, it gave it a very unique but delicious twist to this dish. Service could use some improvement, our waiter wasn't around much. When he was he'd ask one person at our table if they need another drink and not bother asking the rest of the table. We had to stop him multiple times before he started walking away to ask for a refill. Overall, the ambiance was very nice. Food was great and the wine was some of the best I've had. My partner in crime and I decided to try Solterra for a much needed date night. I love finding new restaurants that participate in the passport discount card and Solterra has been on my radar for a while....so it was a win-win! I'm sort of torn on Solterra. I love the location and the layout of the restaurant, but there are a few things holding me back from giving this place 5 stars. Solterra has a great open air concept and the huge open windows allow for great air flow...but because of this, there's really not a quiet spot in the restaurant. One area of the patio is right along the 101. There is live music on the other side of the patio but it seemed pretty loud there, too. Our server was pleasant and answered our questions. We started our meal with their brussel sprout appetizer I enjoyed it but I've had better. I ordered their recommended paella and my partner in crime ordered their surf and turf. Take note- wine and beer only. I didn't have their wine but it seemed everyone in the place was enjoying it. So, why 3 stars? Well, the food was enjoyable but for the price point, I expected it to be better. Even with the passport discount (which is bogo free entree), the bill with tip was over $100. I wish the restaurant was a bit quieter but there's nothing they can do about that. Solterra is a-okay in my book. I think I would return for happy hour but not for a full meal. read more

We came here for an early dinner on Sunday. We sat outside near the fire pit facing coast highway with our dogs. We didn't realize there was a happy hour going on but we decided to take advantage of it and order the HH Brussels sprouts. They were cooked perfectly and had just the right amount of balsamic drizzle. Sometimes restaurants soak their Brussels in balsamic but these were just right. Our waitress helped me pick out a wine(I like buttery Chardonnay) that was lovely. She was very attentive and helpful throughout our meal. We ordered the burger, the Cesar salad, the mussels, and the scallops. I didn't eat the burger or the Cesar salad but my friend enjoyed them both. The mussels are delicious! I have a difficult time finding places that offer good mussels, often times they are small and dried out but these were plump and flavorful. The broth was super yummy and it was perfect for dunking my bread in. The scallops were amazing, crispier on the top and moist in the middle. They came on a bed of palenta which paired perfectly. They had live music going on on the inside but we could hear it from our seats outside. Added a nice touch to our dinner, I forgot how much I missed live music! It wasn't too loud and it sounded great. Overall I was very impressed with the food, the ambiance, and the service here. I highly recommend the ribeye for an entree and the patatas bravas as an appetizer. My favorite part of that appetizer was the texture -crispy on the outside and truly soft on the inside-rather than the sauce. The hostess and server were both really friendly and thoughtful. We decided to have our small wedding reception (20 people) here at Solterra because of it's great location and reputation for good food/wine. From the beginning Alex (the event coordinator) was FANTASTIC!!! She walked us through menu options, wine tasting, the table layout, logistics for the day off, the music sound system, cake delivery, all the details. They were very flexible for some special accomodations with food and alcohol we requested. The entire staff made the event go smoothly. And the food....the food!!!!! OMG! Family said it was the best wedding food they have ever tasted!! we actually had too much food. Honestly--EVERYTHING, every single item was outstanding! many family members even bought bottles of wine to bring home! Words really cannot express how pleased we are with the fantastic job the Solterra team provided for us on our big day. Everything was so delicious and all the timing and service was spot on. During the event Jade was so responsive and provided us with fantastic customer service. With so much to worry about, the experience Alex and Jade provided us allowed us to finally relax and enjoy a beautiful dinner with our friends and family. Solterra came in so clutch for my grandmothers 90th birthday when another dining venue "lost" our reservation of 14 that we made months ago. They were so kind and went above and beyond for us and even rolled out little side barrel tables for us. They also accepted our cake delivery no problem and cut it for us and provided dishes for it. I'd been there before years ago pre-COVID and so did my aunts and we were all very happy with the outcome, plus their food is AMAZING as well as the drink/wine selection. This restaurant is absolutely charming. It is very popular, too, and there could be a long wait for a table. However, if you can grab seats at the bar, you could be seated right away. So give the bar a try. Obviously, this is a winery/wine bar and restaurant --it says so right in the name the last I checed. We tried four different varieties of wine and they ranged in quality from not so good to pretty good. They offer a ton of different wines which can be a bit of a red flag, at least to me. I'd rather a place offer 5 killer wines than 25 mediocre ones. But everyone I saw was drinking wine and everyone seemed pretty happy, too, so there you go. The "mixed plate" includes both charcuterie/meats and cheese and lots of toasted bread, olives, nuts, etc. It's a lot of food and is plenty for two to share. It costs $29, which is pricey, but again, it was more than sufficient for two adults. Plus, it's delicious and the presentation was outstanding. I would absolutely get it again. Service at the bar was also excellent. The place was packed but service was very friendly and attentive. There was live music in the tasting room which was a nice touch. I also saw some kids in there but they looked bored to tears. Apparently, kids are welcome here (and I'm perfectly fine with that) but I'm not sure the place or the menu is absolutely appropriate for them. Overall, the atmosphere was terrific and the mixed plate was great. I just wish the wines were better. Call it a strong 4. I'll happily return...and probably try the beers. read more
