My mom wanted to go out for breakfast, so we decided to visit Somers Sunshine Cafe. Parking was easy to find, and we were seated right away. However, I was surprised by how busy the restaurant was for a Tuesday morning. It seemed to be a popular breakfast spot for seniors. Perhaps because of their featured seniors menu? I'll be honest and never noticed there was a "Somers" to the name. Always called it the Sunshine Cafe. Anyways, I am glad this place remained a breakfast/brunch/lunch place. Prior to Somers Sunshine Cafe (will shorthand to SSC for remainder of review), this place was an IHOP. Not only that, it was during the time IHOP was really good and out of this world. As for SSC, the food is really good too and dare I say, better than the current menu IHOP has to offer. I've been eating here for many years but I will review it for what it is at the moment. The ambiance is still the same from its IHOP days. If you ever eaten in a place like Denny's, Perkins, or... well... IHOP, you will get the same feel as SSC. Many booths and many tables, to sit at if it isn't packed. Problem is this place is a mom and pop catergory restaurant and for sit-down full service, it suffers the same issue many restaurants of its kind has: lack of manpower. They are always needing waiters and waitresses. Guess what? Same goes for almost any other restaurant similar to them. I will not highly fault SCC for the lack of manpower because many restaurants suffer the same fate. I will highlight they do their best with the staff they have. Unfortunately, their staff is not enough to continue running as a full day diner and will now become a true breakfast and brunch place and close at 2:30 p.m. Food is very good. I had the philly cheesesteak omelette and it was delicious. My sister had steak tips and she says they were good. Dad had something from the senior citizen's menu that was sized for senior citizens. Not saying it was bad but the presentation was so simple, I didn't even bother to take a picture. Overall, a solid place to eat breakfast/brunch/lunch. I will definitely have SSC much higher up as a selection if I am looking for such a restaurant, but I will not drive out of the way to eat there like some others. Still family-owned and operated, I figured they must be doing something right to remain in the game for over a ¼ Century. As I waited with 6 other groups of people to be seated staring at 15 open tables, I realized they did not have front of the house figured out yet. Quite an inauspicious start to the meal, to say the least. The rank incompetence of the seating system was fully exposed to me by the glib and friendly Natalie, who explained the 15 open tables were a function of not being allowed to seat people until it was the next server's turn. This resulted in literally 1/3 of the tables being vacant while people waited. A host/hostess would rectify this in a heartbeat. Finally shown to a table, it wasn't long before our server, Danielle, introduced herself. She fits in perfectly with her charming demeanor and spunky attitude. With the front of the house obviously in a state of suzerainty to the back, I would lay dollars to donuts; this place has to have good food. To this end, I put in an order for some Peanut Butter Pancakes and one Patty Melt. I had just enough time to snap a few pics of the joint and relax a bit when I saw Danielle joyfully returning with my grub. More pics for you, loyal followers and it was time to get to work. If the pancakes tasted half as good as they smelled and looked, I knew I was going to be in for a gastronomical treat. Consisting of buttermilk pancakes filled with chocolate chips, layered with peanut butter sauce and topped with yet more chocolate chips, whipped cream and chocolate syrup this smacked of a Reese's. Only in pancake form and better. Much better. Nothing beats homemade buttermilk pancakes for breakfast/brunch. Well, maybe eggs Benedict, but that's about it. Sighing regrettably as I had to move on, I eyed the patty melt. If you take a gander at the photo, you can see that this chunk of ground beef was hand formed, just the way Grandma would have made it had she made patty melts. The meat was seasoned to perfection, cooked as ordered and nestled between two superlatively grilled pieces of rye bread. The fries were fried to a delectable golden doneness and were a fine accompaniment to the melt. It's sad, I always loved going to Sunshine Cafe, but this morning, that changed. We stopped by to have breakfast. It was busy so had to wait, no problem. There was just 2 of us. While waiting, several other couples walked in. The eash requested specific waitresses. The first table came available, so they called one of the ones that had asked for specific waitresses. Then the second table became available, and once again, they called another couple that had requested specific waitresses. At that point, I was not happy and walked out. If they had reservations, that would have been different, but they just wanted specific waitresses. I do not think that is the right way to go about serving customers. Was a little hesitant about the place at first because of the wait and slow pace. Definitely diner vibes and didn't know of many places in the town for breakfast. Once we got our waters I knew it wasn't going to be too bad of a wait. I ended up getting the "Little Bit of Everything" breakfast with no pork with grits and hash browns and cupcake pancakes. I loved the breakfast. Pancakes were moist and cooked perfectly, eggs not hard/runny. Wasn't super big on turkey bacon but still good! Grits were excellent with a little pepper. We were seated in a very short amount of time on a Saturday morning which was good. The service was slow and the food is the same as the IHOP restaurant before it. I ordered an omelet with the cheese inside so that it wasn't so dry. It was still over cooked and just ok. The pancakes were good, grits were good but who can screw this up. My husband ordered Eggs Benedict and they took 20 minutes to come back out and let us know they had no English Muffins and needed to pick something else off the menu. Overall it was just ok. Nothing spectacular as breakfast goes. I would come back but I would make sure I had plenty of time in my schedule. I can't imagine a restaurant could screw up breakfast but things could definitely improve here. Maybe hiring a better cook. read more

NEVER AGAIN First of all new to this area and love Palm Bay and for the most part the people are amazing !! However was out today getting stuff for Halloween was near harbor freight and my son and I were looking for a mom and pop place to eat we came across Somers Sunshine on Malabar I'm in a wheelchair ans have a medium size service dog and need space to park and the lot was empty so though we would try it went in and sat at the door waiting to be seated it was about 1:45 little did we know it closed at 2:30 I even asked the waitress if breakfast was served all day she said no stops at 2:30 which would have been a good time to tell us the place closed at 2:30 so after eating 20+ min to be seated we got a booth out of the way my service dog was under the table by my feet out of sight so the waitress kept rushing us and standing over the table even after we said we have never been here and needed a min it was weird to say the least so we ordered and I was feeding my service dog what was left of my cheeseburger a man about 5 foot tall covers walking out of the back and a filthy black apron approached the table and being that I owned restaurants in the past I thought he was coming out to check how the food was so before he said anything, I proceeded to tell him that the burgers were very tasty and juicy, and that we might have found a new spot to come to about that time he says, do you need me to get you some plasticware and he pointed down at the dog I said no she's fine I just feed her a little bit of what I eat. Kind of laughed it off and said she eats better than I do. He says we'd really appreciate if you didn't feed her, I said excuse me, he said yeah we just don't want you feeding the dog in the building so at that moment we calmly paid our bill of which was nearly $45.00 which it looked like to me. They needed the business. He was very rude about it, and even make sure that he came back to the table a second time to make sure we were leaving. Did not offer us to go boxes for our stuff or anything just simply handed us are Bill and watched as we left I will not go back there simply for being treated rudely, and mom and Pop shops as much of them are going out of business. You would think I understand if the dog was slobbering or being nasty or wasn't trained but in no way, shape or form did anyone know I was feeding my dog I would've known had he not walked up and made a big presentation out of it. I just think it was poorly worded, and in this day and age people need to understand that people with disabilities that have service animals have the right to go to places just like anyone else and if they had a problem with the dog they should've stated it at the time I came into the building, because I made sure to ask if it was a problem, and the waitress told me not at all so whoever the guy was that came out of the kitchen you really need to work on your people skills are not be back!! and we will let our friends know in the handicap community. They're not welcome in this place of business.!! because you know disable peoples money is not as good as a regular dollar!! FML read more

Since moving to Palm Bay in April, this has become our go-to breakfast spot. Nichole and I look for multiple things in our breakfast spots: fair pricing, fully cooked eggs, and crispy, flavorful waffles. Nichole also likes places that serve lunch as well because she's not the breakfast fiend I am (I could eat breakfast foods every meal of the day). Fair pricing: even with add-ons, our bill is never more than $30, usually around $24 including two LARGE meals and drinks. Eggs: 9 times out of 10, when you tell the staff over-medium, the egg comes out fully cooked and with runny yolk. Nothing grosses me out more than when the while part of the egg is not fully cooked. Waffles: I don't know what it is, but you can always tell when a restaurant is doing it right. I'm not sure if it's the batter or the temperature? But their waffles are always flavorful and crispy. I'm sure we'll eat here for a long time, I only wish they were open nights during the week so I could get an evening breakfast fix without having to messy up the kitchen. :D read more

Update 7 June 2023 It has been over 9 months since last visit. I wanted to try again. After all I am sure the last cook is gone and things have been improved. I requested the same thing I had 9 months ago. The cook needs to learn how to make scrambled eggs. I received eggs that were cooked flat then chopped into squares. The eggs were cold and tough. The sausages were cold. The hash browns were not crispy but hard on one side and soft on the other. The hash browns were also cold. The only thing that was acceptable was the french toast. Maybe I am expecting too much. This used to be a great place, not anymore. If the owner does not turn this place around. They will end up closing like the Palm Bay Diner. They had great food when the "new" owner opened up. After about four months the cook was changed. I quit going. The new owner made a lot of changes. Did not work. I have a better breakfast going to two different close by locations. I did contact the owner before coming back yesterday. I wanted to see if anything has improved. Annie was my server. Always great. I don't understand why she did not tell the owner or the manager I was unhappy. Maybe neither was there. I may go back in another 9 months to try again. Only if they are still open. I have been a customer when they were IHop. Many years. I have a select wait staff I ask for each trip. All of my trips only one time has the manager talked with me. Monday (Aug 8, 2022) I stopped for breakfast. I requested french toast, two eggs scrambled, bacon, hash browns crispy and coffee. The eggs were super dry and robbery. The hash browns were uncooked inside and dripping in oil. Both were so bad I could not eat. The bacon was over cooked and brittle. The coffee. Apparently they changed to a cheaper brand and added water to serve more customers. The only thing worth eating was the french toast. I told my server what had happened. She said she would talk to the manager. The manager did not come out to talk with me. I thought that was unprofessional. The manger did not offer to comp my meal. He charged me for the coffee and french toast. He charged me over $7.00 for this. If he would have offered to comp the breakfast I would have refused. But he never gave me the chance. If they continue to provide this type of service and this low quality food. They may have to close their doors. Already their hours have been cut again. I will not go back because of the way a loyal customer has been treated. I was never looking for a free meal. I believe (if they continue treating their customers to low quality food) they will be closing their doors before the end of this year. We ate here for the first time on 10/3 and really enjoyed it. The food was fresh and the server was really nice. I would give this a 5 star review but the bathrooms were a bit unpleasant...not really the cleanliness of it per se but the smell of the lady's room smelled like it was mopped with urine and stale water. I really hate to add that to my review but a really good bottle of Clorox urine and a deep cleaning may help get rid of that. read more
