Somers Sunshine Cafe 1107 Malabar Road Palm Bay, FL 32907 4 Stars After 25+ years in the same location, Somers Sunshine Cafe was bound to come up on my random name generator sooner or later. Still family-owned and operated, I figured they must be doing something right to remain in the game for over a ¼ Century. As I waited with 6 other groups of people to be seated staring at 15 open tables, I realized they did not have front of the house figured out yet. Quite an inauspicious start to the meal, to say the least. The rank incompetence of the seating system was fully exposed to me by the glib and friendly Natalie, who explained the 15 open tables were a function of not being allowed to seat people until it was the next server's turn. This resulted in literally 1/3 of the tables being vacant while people waited. A host/hostess would rectify this in a heartbeat. Finally shown to a table, it wasn't long before our server, Danielle, introduced herself. She fits in perfectly with her charming demeanor and spunky attitude. With the front of the house obviously in a state of suzerainty to the back, I would lay dollars to donuts; this place has to have good food. To this end, I put in an order for some Peanut Butter Pancakes and one Patty Melt. I had just enough time to snap a few pics of the joint and relax a bit when I saw Danielle joyfully returning with my grub. More pics for you, loyal followers and it was time to get to work. If the pancakes tasted half as good as they smelled and looked, I knew I was going to be in for a gastronomical treat. Consisting of buttermilk pancakes filled with chocolate chips, layered with peanut butter sauce and topped with yet more chocolate chips, whipped cream and chocolate syrup this smacked of a Reese's. Only in pancake form and better. Much better. Nothing beats homemade buttermilk pancakes for breakfast/brunch. Well, maybe eggs Benedict, but that's about it. Sighing regrettably as I had to move on, I eyed the patty melt. If you take a gander at the photo, you can see that this chunk of ground beef was hand formed, just the way Grandma would have made it had she made patty melts. The meat was seasoned to perfection, cooked as ordered and nestled between two superlatively grilled pieces of rye bread. The fries were fried to a delectable golden doneness and were a fine accompaniment to the melt. The Big Boy says, "Ignore the helter-skelter front of the house mismanagement, ask for Danielle and focus on the chow."

First let me say, visiting from San Diego, we found the Best breakfast spot in Melbourne, Florida, wow what Avery good yummy spot, I had the pancakes combo with a very good side of Grits. Waiters are very courteous and service so prompt and friendly, best feel inside to, cozy, a must breakfast spot.

Was a little hesitant about the place at first because of the wait and slow pace. Definitely diner vibes and didn't know of many places in the town for breakfast. Once we got our waters I knew it wasn't going to be too bad of a wait. I ended up getting the "Little Bit of Everything" breakfast with no pork with grits and hash browns and cupcake pancakes. I loved the breakfast. Pancakes were moist and cooked perfectly, eggs not hard/runny. Wasn't super big on turkey bacon but still good! Grits were excellent with a little pepper. Great classic southern diner, definitely better than IHOP.

Always a good sign when the place is packed. They have local photograghy decor. Friendly attentive waitresses! Great food presentation with good portions and prices. I'd definitely come back to try a different dish.

He wanted a big hamburger. We came in after lunch time and he got the 16 oz. burger and a side of fries (not keto or carnivore). I haven't had a potato since last Christmas and these fries looked REAL (not the frozen or processed fries most restaurants use which I wouldn't waste my time eating). I had to try a few. I wasn't hungry so I just ate a few of his fries and tried a couple bites of his burger. The fries were yummy. Almost addictive. I asked the gal at the counter about what kind of oil they used to fry potatoes in. Sadly, they use soybean oil, not tallow which is what all restaurants used pre-1980. Tallow is at least keto/carnivore friendly. My husband loved the burger minus the bun. I thought the burger was absolutely DELICIOUS. So I'm rating this 4 stars not 5 because the dirty seed oil ruined what could have been the best french fries. By the way....Steak & Shake uses tallow for frying their fries in.

Excellent Smoked Wings and Great Happy Hour Spot…read more Stopped by Broken Barrel Tavern at Palm Bay Road and Babcock and had a great experience. Service was prompt and friendly, and the happy hour specials made it an even better value. I ordered the wing basket with 8 smoked wings and onion petals. The onion petals were crispy, flavorful, and paired perfectly with the spicy remoulade sauce. For the wings, I tried both the Carolina Vinegar and the Hot Garlic flavors. The smoked wings themselves were outstanding, and the Hot Garlic sauce was especially memorable because it featured real garlic, which added incredible flavor. These are definitely wings I will come back for and highly recommend to anyone visiting. My partner ordered the BBQ pulled pork quesadillas with seasoned fries. The fries were more like freshly cut chips, nicely seasoned and delicious, and the quesadillas were excellent as well. Overall, Broken Barrel Tavern delivered great food, quick service, and a relaxed atmosphere. If you're in the Melbourne area and looking for outstanding smoked wings, this place is absolutely worth a visit. We'll definitely be back.

Went for lunch on a Friday and they had two servers and only one working the dining area. We sat in the very dark dining area. Every surface was painted black. Lighting was pretty poor and it was hard to read the menus. Ordered a pulled pork platter and a pulled pork sandwich. They both came with "fried chips" and the platter had another side and we chose beans. Bourbon Bbq sauce was our choice. The pork was good. Good portions on both sandwich and platter. Beans had some "heat" which I don't favor but my son really liked. The chip fries or fried chips - whichever they call them were seasoned with a garlic salt it tasted like. However they could have used about another minute I the fryer. The bigger ones were raw in the middle. May have been a byproduct of a large party in their event room throwing off their timing. But if cooked a bit more they would be a unique side for the area and good. Server was stretched thin. Freshens my son's drink but not mine until he brought the check. By then meal was over. I had water. Not difficult. Rib special looked good from a distance and I heard they are known for wings. Maybe next time. Noticed there is a private room for events that most restaurants do not have. So a point to consider.

They looked like someone opened a can of chicken, dumped it on top of tortilla chips, sprinkled on some dry, unmelted cheese, and called it a day. There was absolutely no flavor, and the cheese wasn't even melted. We also ordered the July special burger, but there was nothing "special" about it. It lacked seasoning, flavor, and any reason to order it again. Bland would be an understatement. The service didn't make the experience any better. Our waitress walked around like she had absolutely no interest in being there. When she finally came over to ask how the food was, our plates were practically untouched--we had only taken a bite or two before giving up. We politely told her the food wasn't good, and instead of showing any concern or offering a solution, she gave us a look of shock. Customer service goes a long way, and unfortunately, it was just as disappointing as the meal. The only highlight of the visit was my Diet Coke--cold, crisp, and refreshing. Thank goodness for that, because it was about the only thing that kept me going. Overall, I can't and won't recommend this restaurant. I genuinely hope they make some improvements, but based on this experience, we won't be back. Also the one star is because they won't allow you the option for zero stars!

The gravy was OK, but was separating a little/ runny and was extremely hot. so overall, I would give my food like a 3.75/5. we shared food and my wife echoed these sentiments. my wifes meal. first, I will only say that I didn't feel like you got very much portion wise for her protein, maybe we are a little spoiled as there is a Soulfood restaurant closer to where we live where the price is about the same but you get a lot more meat. however, flavor is king and... flavor of the oxtails here was lacking. my wife felt they were underseasoned. the rice with them was... rice, didn't really pick up any of the meetings from the broth/marrow of the oxtail bones. her mac & cheese was quite quite good, I ended up eating most of it. The collard greens were probably the worst thing we ate, no flavor at all, even after adding hot sauce. Normally my wife loves collard greens and I don't eat much, but she was more than happy to let me have as much of them as I wanted, but after a couple of bites, I stopped. overall, I would rate the food she ordered as 2.5/5. between our meals, one iced tea and tip it was $50. Again, the service was very good. My food was pretty good. My wife's food underwhelming. overall, Respectfully, we're not from the area so our odds of returning were not high anyway, but there was nothing else would really draw us back if we were to return to the area. my final note would be, they were not very busy, but it seemed like most of the customers where we could tell what they ordered had ordered the catfish so that made be indicative of something we or someone else might want to order on a future visit.
