We came up to the truck to have lunch during our long drive to Lake Tahoe from Seattle, and were very surprised by how magnificent the food here was. The chicken pad Thai was very sweet, which I don't usually like- but when combined with the garlic prawns (!!!) it's one of the tastiest things I've had in a Thai restaurant. The red curry was also the best curry we've had- and we've got a great number of amazing Thai restaurants in Seattle that I'm comparing this to. The Thai tea was tasty as well, and she gave us a ton. The owner/chef was extremely kind and welcoming, asking us where we came from and how the food was. We will definitely be back to enjoy this place again when we come through. Outdoor ambiance could use work, though. read more

I didn't expect to fall in love with a Thai food cart in Klamath Falls, but here I am-completely smitten and still thinking about the meal I had days after I've departed the city. I've tried my share of Thai food in the Portland/Beaverton area and none of them compares to Somtum Thai in taste and value. We ordered the pad se ew, pad kee mao and tom kha-all at $12 each. Everything was extremely flavorful and cooked to perfection. There was a certain richness to the pad se ew and pad kee mao that I can't seem to find anywhere else. It's as if every flavor is enhanced yet still works together harmoniously to create the most perfect version of each dish. In addition to that, portions were generous-which is always appreciated! There is a bit of a wait, but let me assure you-it is well worth it! I sneaked a peek at the cook as she was preparing my order and it was nothing short of masterful. She worked diligently and cooked each dish with great care and attention to detail. You can taste the love she puts into her food. A word of warning-we ordered everything at spice level 2 on a scale of 1-5 (5 being most spicy), and that was still prettttttttty spicy. If you're sensitive to spice, level 1 may be the way to go. read more

I dragged my family to come here because of all the rave reviews! Please note that this place, though it has some picnic tables to sit on to eat, is better for a takeout. The picnic tables mostly were under the blasting sun (even at 6pm) and the two tables that were in the shaded area were filthy and there were lots of flies and other bugs crawling on them. We originally wanted to eat there, but decided to bring the food back to our hotel. We ordered the Tom kha, the pad kra pow and red curry, all with chicken. Red meat lovers, please note, they only serve chicken and pork (and tofu) for protein, no beef. All the 3 dishes came with steamed rice. The portion was generous! The tom kha and the curry came in the 32 oz plastic tub container, lots of chicken and veggies in them. I ordered the red curry "no spice" (the order taker told me it was possible to do so), but when we ate them, it was actually has some heat (not for me because I'm an avid spicy food eater), especially if you cannot handle spice at all. The tom kha, I ordered it level 1, and again for my hubby and toddler were spicy. The pad kraw pow waS a level 2 and definitely the spiciest of the 3 dishes. Overall, we thought the tom kha was the BEST in terms of the taste. It was just right with some sourness from the tamarind, creaminess from the coconut milk, and seasoned perfectly. It tasted very authentic. Hubby loved the pad kra pow! It was bold and had great flavors. I have to say the food tasted very thai authentic. Not overly sweetened, yummy! The red curry was good too, but I liked the tom kha more. Thankfully my toddler loves rice so I just shredded some of the chicken pieces and buried them in rice lol. She was hungry enough and though she complained a little about the spice level, she still ate (a lot!!) I didn't taste the Thai tea, but hubby said it was good too. Overall, we had a great dinner and the portion was very generous for the price tag! If you came here, definitely get the tom khA! read more

Our family ate at Som Tum Thai. We were on a pilgrimage to the Tule Lake internment camp. Klamath Falls was the closest town. The restaurant choices are not great: some places are having trouble hiring staff for the season. But this establishment has great reviews on this platform. It was on our list regardless. We had another consideration. Our dog was traveling with us, so we hoped for outdoor seating. I had not understood the business is a food truck. The photos make it clear of course. I am guessing it is permanently located here though; they have a little devotional picture on the wall, a touch indicating how much time they must spend in such a confined space. There are two others also parked in the same lot. The neighborhood could be described as, at best, nondescript. The town does not seem to be enjoying the best of times in economic terms. I recommend Som Tum. I do not offer relativistic reviews. That is patronizing about places, to say is good for a suburban setting or whatever. I will add it should not be surprising that decent ethnic food is available in a locale you would not expect. That is a positive effect of global migration. It also reflects the expanding scope of the average American's palate. There are enough consumers who like this cuisine for the proprietors to have a go. That is great. It is an improvement: a generation ago, you could not have found anything but pad thai of the most cloying flavor other than in the most cosmopolitan metropolis. The prevalence of food trucks also is to be applauded. They seem more than a fad. That movie Chef was a harbinger. So many are quite good, rivaling sit down restaurants. The entrepreneurial spirit is integral to American exceptionalism (no doubt some would take issue as to both the confidence in Adam Smith and the endorsement of the American experiment as extraordinary, and that is fine). We had tom yum soup, pad se ew, and pad prik king. That was with shrimp, shrimp, and chicken, respectively. The last came with jasmine rice. They were out of coconut rice. You specify the spiciness. They will ratchet it up if you can handle it. I like to be challenged. I want to regret the request for the dish to be prepared spicy. In this instance, I specified medium to share with my wife. She could not handle it. So that is a warning. If you have eaten Thai dishes in Thailand, you will have a sense of the national calibration. The wait was about 25 minutes. They ring a bell to summon you. It is just two women working away with customized aprons bearing their logo. The one at the front of the house flattered me by calling me a young man. I'm 57. They close early. Lots of others were there. They have picnic tables. Two were in the sun. Another two were off to the side, in the shade. Most clients took the food to go. The packages are thin cardboard boxes. The portions are generous. It would still be hot, temperature wise, when you got home. I praise Som Tum. You will do well to eat here. read more

I have to be in Klamath Falls every 4-6 weeks for work and always try a new place while I'm there. Somtum Thai is my new favorite place. I had the Pad Thai with the spiciness set at 2. The very nice lady running the counter asked me multiple questions about spicy food to verify that it was what I wanted. Bless her, it was perfect spiciness for me. The Pad Thai was not sweet at all, which I very much appreciated. My dinner was so good, I was beyond happy when my meetings were delayed and I was able to stay in Klamath Falls and have lunch the next day. I had the red curry and it was as perfect a red curry as I've ever had. It surpassed all I've had before in all the traditional centers of Thai cooking in the US and places you wouldn't think would have good Thai food like Kansas City. As good as though were, they weren't not as a good as I had here. The food was good enough that I bought additional orders of each and a cooler to take them home to have for lunch the following day. It was worth it and the wife asked me to do it again when I return to Klamath Falls. read more

Needed a satisfying meal on the return from a road trip and this unassuming tiny food 'park' area on the side of the road was our best meal of the trip. We ordered the pad see ew with tofu, garlic prawns, and fried tofu appetizer. All were incredibly delicious, fresh, and perfectly seasoned and textured. The portions also were huge and prices are more than fair. We ate on the picnic benches out front and a sweet older lady quickly popped her head out of the window asked us how the food was. AMAZING and we meant it. You know how your mom/grandma's food tastes inextricably better than other foo because the love? Somtum Thai is my absolutely favorite Thai restaurant, one of only a handful of really wonderful eateries in Klamath Falls. The food is SPICY, unless you ask for it to be "no spice", and usually then there is still a little kick! I love the woman who runs the place, she remembers me and is always so friendly! She mentioned once that her son doesn't want her to work as much, but I will order food from here no matter what kind of hours they hold. What a pleasant find in this beautiful little town!! My hubby and I are visiting from out of town, got hungry and decided to yelp food trucks and stumbled upon this gem. The nicest mom and son run this food truck! The menu has a VERY good and broad selection of Thai food to choose from! From tomyum soup, to papaya salad, to chicken satay, to stir fried veggies, and of course Pad Thai. I got the Pad Kee Mao and the fried shrimp and a Thai iced tea. I literally don't have one negative thing to say. The noodles were perfectly cooked, with tons of veggies, the shrimps were perfectly fried, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Thai iced tea tastes super authentic and not watered down. The portions are very big, I couldn't finish my noodles, but I'm SUPER excited about the left overs :) read more

I love Pen's food! Love the noodle dishes, and she really knows how to prepare the meat so it is tender and not dry. My favorite is the Green Curry. I usually get it with pork, but last time I tried it with tofu. I am not usually a big tofu fan, but the way she fried it created a firm skin and a tender inside that was really fabulous. Pen is a real sweetheart and will thank you over and over for trying and loving her food. read more

Amazing thai food! I am half thai, raised on authentic thai food, and have been to Thailand many times. This is definitely some of the best Thai food I've had and cannot recommend it enough! It's worth going out of your way to get some and if you're local or staying in the area there's no question - you must try this place! I only wish I lived closer so I could eat here regularly. We got the pad see ew, green curry, som tum, pad kra prao, and spring rolls and I would highly recommend all dishes. Spicy means spicy so make sure you can handle it. Got the red curry with pork and green curry with chicken, (4 stars of spice for both which was perfect for my gf and I who love heat) both were outstanding and seriously some of the best curry I've ever had. Even after living in Seattle and Portland areas. The guy at the register was super friendly and hooked us up with some extra chili flakes which was home smoked and delicious. In my opinion much better food than the local sit down Thai places. The portions were generous and plenty for two meals. I hope this place makes it.
