Came here to take advantage of the half price drinks after 8pm. We wanted at the drive thru window for well over 5 minutes for one milkshake!! Heres the kicker the drive thru employee asked us repeatedly what we were waiting on to which we replied "an oreo milkshake" the drive thru employee shut the window & cashed out the people behind us. Okay it is not a top restaurant. But it is good for what it is. I got a strawberry shake. Very good. With pieces of real strawberries in the shake. Yes I also had a great hot dog. And spouse had a hamburger. And that was a double burger. It came with a lettuce and tomato. The burger also had mayonnaise on it. Would have preferred just ketchup. In typical fast-food fashion, every visit to this Sonic has been different. The service has been different each time, and the food has been different each time. I'm typically not into fast food but was introduced to Sonic a few months ago. I think this was the third time coming to this location. If you have never been to Sonic, this is how it works: You either go through the drive-thru or you pull into a "stall", peruse the menu, decide what you want to order, press a button to start your order, and then you wait for somebody to bring the food to your car either on foot or on roller skates. I find it less overwhelming to look at the Sonic app and decide what I want to order from that menu. I wont go into the Sonic app itself here that is a whole other story. So, let's get to the food. It seems like when you order chicken tenders, if you get a 3 piece, you can bank that two of the three are going to be really hard with very little chicken and one piece is going to be perfect. This was my experience twice. For whatever reason the regular cheeseburger was average for a fast food burger. But on last night's visit when ordering a Sonic Bacon Cheeseburger, it arrived to the car as a double and was extremely delicious. On previous visits I have made my order a meal with tater tots or fries, the tots are good the fries are mediocre. I tried at least one of their onion rings which was pretty good. I decided last night to forgo the "meal" and try one of their famous milkshakes. I'm typically not a milkshake person but Sonic has made a believer out of me. I ordered a small peanut butter fudge Master Shake, it was larger than expected and completely surpassed any and all expectations in the flavor department. It was rich and creamy and smooth, and the whipped cream on top was amazing. Definitely a wow moment. Service: I set my expectations pretty low when it comes to service at fast food restaurants. Generally speaking, service at this location has been as expected or better, with the exception of last night when the food was delivered to the car and without reviewing the order we were just asked for payment and handed the food. Usually they review the order before they ask for payment, just to make sure they got it right. Also my boyfriend ordered light ice with his iced tea and his cup was more than half full with ice. I try to stay away from fast food as much as possible, but when the craving calls I can definitely say that Sonic is on my top 3 for fast food in Richmond. It's not number one, not yet anyway, but if ever craving a milkshake I know where I'm heading to. read more

If I could 0 star this Sonic, I would. I recently just visited this location with my family and we sat in the drive through from 3:43 to 4:10 waiting for somebody to take our order and nobody did. We then proceeded to pull up to the window and when we explained nobody took our order, we were dismissed rudely, and told by the drive thru employee to give him a few minutes. Not only did he not try to help us automatically but slammed the drive thru window very quickly, abruptly, and loudly. I have never been so appalled by a business as much as I was just now. My poor younger brothers were sitting in the back of the truck waiting to have their first experience at sonic but they were instead left empty handed, saddened, and ashamed. read more

This has probably been the worse experience I've ever had at Sonics. This was my first time visiting this particular Sonic. But from beginning to end customer service was horrible. When we ordered our food. We felt "rushed." When we went back to ask her to repeat our order. She ignored us. My burger was cold and hubbys was overcooked. Their slushes are great. The ice cream slushies taste like dreamscicles. The lady that delivered our food appeared to be rude and rushed. I'm afraid to say that I may not be returning to this sonics. Service was extremely quick considering the conditions. It was in the middle of a rainstorm and the young woman came out in her rollerblades. It was my first time at a Sonic so I appreciated her perseverance. She even went back for BBQ sauce. Overall, I got chicken poppers, fries and a vanilla shake for about 9 bucks. Average wait time before you can order no matter what you do is 15 minutes and the wait time before your order arrives is a average of 25 minutes with the longest I've waited being 45 minutes. Maybe I expected too much out of this place. Maybe expecting to get two drinks in a timely manner was asking too much. We ordered two drinks and waited 30 minutes in total before we decided to just leave. In that time a server came with drinks, went to every car there, there was only 4, and asked if those drinks were their order because the system was acting funny. She asked what we ordered and said she would get them and be out shortly. After 15 minutes of waiting for her to come back after previously waiting 15 minutes, we left. This Sonic use to be one of the best drive in food restaurants in Mechanicsville. The service use to be great and food would come out fast and hot/cold. Lately, Lord knows who they hired, but the service has been absolute shit. You wait for 45ish minutes or more just to get two sodas that has already melted ice and some popcorn chicken that is over cooked. They constantly forget that you are there in the stall and don't take your order. Then when they do get around to it there is no "hi how are you" or "hello! My name is ... First of all I LOVED sonic... really did... something changed about a year or so ago and their quality is just gone. I get a major screw up at least every third visit, maybe more. I've written and spoken to managers about their products and yet, no improvements, only worsening service. Last order there were bits of burnt up nastiness floating around the fries, it was DISGUSTING and none of the kids would even touch the food.... Sonic - just don't... for the same money you can get GOOD burgers and dogs at Carytown burgers and fries and go exotic and hit Noorani indian cuisine on broad up the street a ways.... Eat LOCAL!
