New Australian cafe in town (yet somehow it seemed like half of the Australians in NYC were either eating here or waiting to eat here on a Sunday morning). Boyfriend and I came a little before noon, and only had a 10 minute wait but there was quite the line outside by the time we left. Quick impressions: cute (but small) space, great coffee, friendly service, mediocre food. We loved our cortado (mine) and flat white (his), but the food really missed the mark for us. The fried chicken sandwich was more of a schnitzel (pounded flat), and the fries weren't anything special. My baked eggs with halloumi came swimming in a watery tomato sauce. The side of salmon was - oddly enough - served cold and completely unseasoned. There are better Australian cafes in town, but this would do in a pinch for the area. read more

Love it. Love it. Love it. You can't go wrong with this Brit breakfast place that provides breakfast and lunch at any time. Amazing atmosphere and the taste profile is unique and pretty much spectacular. I got to eat the smashed avocado toast with authentic thick rustic European toast, pistachio, smooth feta, and poached egg . Amazing! This place has amazing food. Winter breakfast looked amazing but the avocado smash was fantastic. Amazing is the theme. My mouth was in heaven. Cappuccinos were excellent. Mirrors on the ceiling were also fantastic. This is such a perfect little cafe. I came in around 10 am on a Friday morning & was pleasantly surprised to see that there was no wait. It's a small space indoors with w a few outdoor tables available as well. We ordered the Harisa Folded Eggs and the Mango Smoothie Bowl. For $13, the folded eggs are a great deal-- a huge piece of toast with plenty of soft, fluffy eggs. The brussels sprouts and sweet pepper combo was a really nice side for the rich eggs. The Manog smoothie bowl was also really tasty-- it was fluffier and thicker than we expected, but had a great flavor and was surprisingly filling. I'd 100% return here when I'm back in the city! read more

Great place for a more intimate and casual brunch gathering when you're not in the mood for a raging boozy brunch. The harissa folded eggs were such a treat! The harissa flavor was incorporated very well. You got the kick of it, but it wasn't overpowering. The eggs were so fluffy and airy! My friends got the crispy chicken sandwich and brunch roll. They are not playing around with the crispy chicken sandwich. It comes out to be the size of your head and is actually really good. Brunch roll was also good, but note that it doesn't come with any sides. read more

Chill Australian cafe for brunch and/or drinks with good food and service. We ordered two Sonnyboy Big Breakfasts because we were both starving and they totally filled us right up. Loved my sparkling bellini (which was pleasantly stronger than expected) and the But First, Coffee cocktail was also nice even though the coffee flavour was totally overtaken by the mezcal. Come here for the feel-good food and then stop at Morgenstern's nearby afterwards for a perfect Sunday brunch. read more

Very cute restaurant! I think the theme is Australian dining. We ordered the Sonny boy big breakfast and crispy chicken sandwich. What a wonderful surprise! We were looking for a place for a boozy brunch (on a Monday!), close to our hotel and Sonnyboy fit the bill. We ordered the avocado toast and eggs and fries. The portions were generous, the sourdough toast meaty and rich, and the drinks delicious. I'd post a picture of the dishes but we ate them too fast they were so good! We had to stay inside because of some street work but the outside cafe tables looked adorable. Would definitely come back! read more

Classic two in one Australian Cafe/Bar , the avocado toast here is on point, probably the best I can find here in the city of New York! Filling, delicious and if you are looking for amazing coffee (best in NYC), you'll find it here! The baristas are Australians and the place has a hip industrial design. I came here with anticipation of this being like any other brunch spot in the area - not so much about the food but more an aesthetic place to get day drunk (which is fine!) however when I ordered the Crispy Chicken Sandwich I was not expecting a schnitzel-esque, laughably thin chicken cutlet. Is this an Australian thing??? I can't believe they charge $18 for this pathetic lettuce sandwich served with reheated McDonald's fries. Extremely meh. read more

Small place that left a huge impression. Food, cocktails and service were all superb. I went for dinner and had the kale salad and the falafel bowl. Both were extremely delish. Nice neighborhood gem. Make sure to make reservations ahead of time. It gets very packed. If you are looking for outdoor seating, it is very tight but well heated. I will definitely come back this summer! read more

Came in on a Saturday around 2:30PM and the place was packed, luckily we snuck in right as a table of two cleared up. Sonnyboy is Australian themed and looks relatively new. It does seat quite a few people including bar and table seating. My friend ordered the market salad with couscous, asparagus, grape tomatoes, and snap peas and I ordered the falafel bowl with beats, quinoa, peppers, falafel and pomegranate yogurt dressing. I enjoyed my bowl and it gave a nice spicy kick! From a glance, the harissa eggs (comes with Brussels sprouts!!) and sonnyboy breakfast looked yummy too! The food came relatively quickly and no one rushed us out despite how crowded it was. Overall a good place for a moderately priced brunch, but it definitely gets crowded and is still popping during the later hours of "brunch". Next time, maybe I'd order a flat white or their signature cocktails too! read more

Left satisfied but not happy. Had the chicken sandwich & the breakfast roll (double up, aka extra patty) Chicken sandwich: not bad, aesthetically nice. Flavorful but not too juicy and the fries tasted like frozen McDonald's fries. Breakfast roll was more disappointing. For $11 you expect a plate maybe a small salad?? (I paid $4 more for an extra party, making it impossible to eat with your hands) Tasted like it wanted to be eggslut sandwich. Overall pretty disappointing if you looking to have a full meal. read more

3.5 but will round up to 4 Scrambled eggs were very good - both the harissa and regular Ricotta hotcake was very sweet and heavy - good but maybe in a smaller size or to share next time Fig burrata toast was also good but have had better versions - overall everything was solid. Not a bad choice for brunch, but will keep looking for a favorite brunch spot read more

I've been coming to Sonnyboy regularly (especially for brunch) because I live quite nearby, and it's gotten worse over time. It's way more expensive than it should be for run of the mill food. What spurs me to write, though, was being treated extremely rudely today at brunch. They blew through the amount of waittime I was quoted, and while my young child and I waited at an outdoor waiting table they tried to kick us out (to wait in the rain and in front of a loud bulldozer). So middling food combined with a "who cares about the customer" approach means you should avoid at all costs. There's much better in the neighborhood, and really nearby. This place is not worth it. read more

A small but cozy place to grab Aussie brunch in the LES. We expected a long wait time for brunch when we arrived, but was told we could be seated in 10 minutes. It was around 2pm on a Saturday, so maybe because it was past the prime brunch time. We got the hotcake, harissa folded eggs, and a bowl of fries. The hotcake was surprisingly delicious and just melts in your mouth. The folded eggs were great as well. The place is pretty packed and loud, but that is how most brunch places are on weekends. read more

Their falafel bowl was pretty good. I've never had falafel with a smooth and thin crust but still crispy. Also the chickpea filling inside was sooo smooth. Warning to NOT get their Limonada... it was a San pellegrino can with a cup of ice cubes... why was that $4 when the deli can give it for $1.50? But other than that, delicious food read more

Ate here a few days ago, and I enjoyed my meal. Took my mom who is the pickiest eater I have ever met. She ordered the hotcake which came out a bit over and undercooked. The temp was a little high and it was very brown without being cooked on the inside. My baked eggs were very tasty, good flavor and very filling. I would go back if I was in the area. Overall it was very good quality! The iced latte I had was above average. I had the hotcake and when the waiter first gave it to me I saw the amount of syrup that was already poured into my hotcake and was worried about how sweet it was going to be. Taking the first bite, the combination of fresh berries, thick pancake, and the syrup was a perfect combination. My friends enjoyed their order as well. Underwhelming. Was excited to find a place with bloody marys and heat lamps! Unfortunately, the outside seating is inexplicably cramped, despite having additional space across the street. The avocado toast was HUGE and delicious, the ham & cheese toasty was also quite filling. Bloody mary was just ok, and everything had juuuust a little too much lemon. Weekends are for Brunch! Small but cozy. Luckily I came on a rainy day and it wasn't too busy. I loved the mirror ceilings, added a nice "greenhouse" like effect. Sunday brunch walked right in around 11:30 (yay) and had great service eating outside there. The "But First, Coffee" was veeeeery interesting and dare I say, quite good?! The burrata + fig toast was delicious and fresh, and the ricotta hotcake was so so good. I rarely order sweet things at brunch but these two were the perfect options for my tastes. The shakshuka on the other hand, looked and smelled amazing, and would definitely be my next choice if in a savory mood. Thumbs up for me. read more

This place is awesome! Has the vibe of a laid back Sydney/Melbourne cafe in the East Village. There isn't a thing of the menu that's not tasty and fresh and awesome. Created as an all-day gathering for locals and visitors alike, Sonnyboy is a vibrant space that serves a seasonally stylish menu but without the fuss. The focus is on great food + drinks, from morning brunch to late nights at the bar where the staff are so charming you'll probably let them join your party.

History

Established in 2019.

Sonnyboy will be Josh Evans and Nick Duckworth's second restaurant together. In February 2017, the pair opened the all-day cafe, Banter, which is located on Sullivan Street in the Greenwich Village. Josh and Nick were previously managers at Two Hands cafe in Nolita. Joining Nick and Josh is Stef D'Orsogna who has been managing the beverage program at Banter for 18 months. Chef Jake Hawkins will be in charge of the kitchen. Jake has spent the past 12 months as head chef of Banter after moving across from Five Leaves in Williamsburg. Jake has worked as a chef in several notable restaurants in Sydney such as Dead Ringer, The Grounds of Alexandira and Sean's Panaroma.

Overall, it's a comfortable spot to meet friends and hang out for a few hours, especially on a weekday like Thursday. That said, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to return, but I can see why it works well as a local neighborhood hang.
