The food broke my heart. I actually like Sonny's and have eaten at this location. Not sure if it's because it was later in the evening, or if quality has simply gone down. Got the 3 meat make your own family meal, and the smoked wings. The brisket, ribs, and wings were so dry and over cooked. The brisket was also old and turning colors. The pulled pork was good. I got the green beans, cole slaw, and beans. The green beans were a bit sour and I'm sure it wasn't vinegar. The beans had been smashed, and the cole slaw was warm. For $80 I should have been able to eat more than pork, beans, toast, and tots. I know it isn't fine dining but so disappointing. It was not delivered, it was pick up. Decided to try the newly reopened Sonny's BBQ in Lawrenceville and boy am I glad we did! We do game night once a month with another couple and we trade off dinner and desserts. This month it was our turn for dinner and I didn't feel like making anything. On my way home from the salon I noticed that Sonny's had reopened, so pulled in and checked out their menu, joined their email club, downloaded their app and received the pork eggrolls appetizer for free! Normally $9.49 and it was delicious! They also have a family feast for $49.99 that comes with 2 meats, 3 pint size sides, garlic toast or cornbread. The manager Tess was wonderful and so patient with me trying to decide on what to get. I ended up picking both pulled pork and pulled chicken (1lb of each), macaroni n cheese, green beans and baked beans along with 6 pieces of garlic toast and I added 3 more pieces for only $2! We each made sandwiches to go with the sides. Everything was so GOOD! Definitely trying the ribs next time. Their remodel from what I could see, was beautiful, but I only went to the bar which was super nice with all the wood work. At 2:00 there were about 15 cars in the parking lot. I have been a big fan of Sonny's BBQ for over 50 years. The food is always fantastic slow smoked Southern BBQ with great homemade side dishes. When I'm hungry, I always get the all-you-can-eat sliced pork plate with two sides and an iced tea. You can keep reordering meat and sides until you're full! It is great! The servers are always friendly and attentive and the food comes out quick and fresh. I am so so upset. I went through the drive through tonight (7/30) for dinner and grabbed a pulled chicken sandwich meal for ~$14. Drive through employee said my total (14) and held the scanner out for me to tap, I tapped and drove off with my food. While leaving the parking lot, I got an Apple Pay notification that my card was charged for $19. I drove back around the drive through and when he finally came back to the window he offered me a free drink. When I asked why I was charged an extra 5 and he said the menus are broken from the storm and aren't showing the correct price and they were due to be fixed the next day. Well then I asked for a receipt, and he said the printer was down, and that I could have the receipt texted to me. He then hands me the scanner to type in my number and I could see the receipt breakdown behind it. When I looked, it said he added a $5 dollar tip without telling me. I immediately asked for the manager. She (I think her name was Suzette) was so kind, apologized profusely and seemed genuinely upset about it, and refunded the tip and gave me a receipt (from the "broken" printer). It's not about the $5 (I probably would have given something if given the opportunity), it's about the fact that he stole it from me and who knows how many other people he did that to without them noticing. It's repulsive. Long story short. Request your receipts and check it twice from this place. read more

Food is decent enough - not great, but fine for fast food bbq. I had a lousy experience trying to use the curbside service, though. You pull up in a spot and call to tell them you've arrived. I tried calling a few times and no one picked up, and two employees were on a smoke break outside and looked over at the car a few times. I get that they were on break, but after about 8 minutes I went inside. The hostess wasn't at her station, and after about four minutes came inside. She'd been one of the ones on the smoke break watching the car, and was still texting when I said I was there for a curbside order. Sonny's, What is going on? Do you not like us? There has been several occasions that I've could of written a review about but decided not to. This location is ridiculous. First, issue I experienced was a to go order placed online, which we entered the parking spot number as instructed and waited an unexpected amount of time to be told that the online portion was giving them issues and waited 30 min watching our food just sitting there turning cold to be given to me. I voiced my opinion there and was still given the cold food and an apology. The next issue, we came in and sat to wait for the food instead of placing to go to eliminate the first experience. They couldn't get it right after making the same order twice. The final time to visit this location took the cake, we just watched you give our food to the car next to us. And we heard you call our name. The food exchanged hands with someone Else! You didn't remake my order, you charged me, we left, called to speak with a manager, and hung up on. I used to like coming to this Sonny's location. Last time at the drive through I endured foul language at the window. One of the employees was cursing up a storm. If you hate your job get a new one. Everyone is hiring right now. This time I was seated at a sticky dirty table. Ordered pork 3 ways. Got the tip of the ribs on the plate which was charred to nearly inedible on the smallest rib. Otherwise food and service were good. On my way to the car, the same guy was at the outdoor seating cursing again loudly at another employee. I will no longer dine at this location. I am VERY impressed by the products Sonny provides as it pertains to bbq. I haven't eaten at this place for nearly 20 years and I must say, they have really stepped up a lot!! 20 years ago it was like fake bbq, no taste, hardly any smoke to it, and I just left them alone altogether. The order: As I did order from the drive through to take home for the night for later, it had my truck smelling so good. From the time the woman gave me my plate that smoke hit my nose and my stomach started growling. I ordered the rib and chicken combo as it was a descent amount of food as my plate was heavy. Maybe the woman at the drive through was so in awe of me and that was my reward. (Just kidding) Time to eat: I wanted to look at my bbq before I heated it up. I didn't want to do any injustice to the meat by microwave. I looked at my ribs, and man, this reminded me of something that I would see on BBQ Pitmasters!! They had the smoke ring and everything and it appeared to me as that of being competition bbq. Now at this point, I didn't even want to heat it up. There was no sauce on it, which I like anyway but sauce was afforded to me if I wanted some with my meats. Biting of the ribs and chicken: I bit into one of my ribs, and it was perfect!! You could taste the smoke, seasoning not over bearing and where I bit at, I only received that meat without all of the ribs coming off of the bone. If that would have happened, I would have known it was overcooked. That didn't happen! When you can see your bite mark in a rib, that's a perfectly cooked rib!! Let's talk about the chicken. Again here, great smoke flavor, great seasoning and even the skin on the chicken was a bite through, not rubbery or tough, but it was a clean bite!! I didn't pull all of the skin off of the chicken when I bit into in. Again, this was competition style bbq that I had. Rating: I would have given them a 5 star rating but my order was missing one side. The baked beans were great, I just wished I could have tasted the coleslaw. The only thing this place has to do is give me the same bbq anytime I go there because I can easily drop this rating down if it's not up to par with me. If they can give me the same bbq next time I go and it's still competition style, I will gladly move them up one notch as long as my order is correct. read more

We showed up at 9:20, On maps (see image Ive included), it said that the place was open until 11pm, so our 15 person party sat down and ate. Around 10ish the waitress cleared everything and took our payments. At this point, the waitress should have told us they were closing... but she didn't, and stewed for 45 minutes until she hit a boiling point and announced rather loudly- "I don't mean to be rude, but we closed 45 minutes ago and I have a family I'd like to get home to!!!" We simply said "online it said you were open until 11pm", and the waitress said nothing. We picked up and left in 30 seconds. This was an incredibly awkward situation and the waitress could have handled this way better. A simple statement to us close to 10 would have sufficed, instead, a great place food wise left a bad taste in our mouths. This woman clearly didn't care anymore and clearly didn't use common sense. Just right there we were about to leave, but then decided to give it a chance. Our server was nice and ready to answer to our questions about the menu. As more and more "boutique" BBQ joints open up, I feel like Sonny's BBQ is an example of a "chain" restaurant that is doing things right ... Back during the "recession" (tip of the hat to ya, Bush-Cheney), it seemed like Sonny's had all but pulled out of metro Atlanta. They closed just about all of their local locations except a few 'ITP' ... It was on a recent trip to Florida that I stopped into a Sonny's and remembered how good it was. I was glad to find this Lawrenceville Sonny's still standing -- remodeled -- and popular in the area. One of the things that distinguishes Sonny's from some of the small BBQ joints are the quality and variety of their "sides." And unlike the trendy spots that are only going to give you a thimble of baked beans or greens, you are given a amble side that is worthy of the generous entree itself. All of the meats I have ever tried at Sonny's have been great. The ribs and (newer item) chicken wings are a standout for me. I love the Texas toast they serve here as well. Much more so than the dry "southern biscuits" that so many places tend to push. This location, one of the few, is just south of entrance/exit of GA HWY 316 on Duluth Hwy in Lawrenceville. read more
