Traveling home from Florida to Virginia we were starving and found this great restaurant. The parking lot was full but we got seated right away. We all ordered Brisket and it was very good. This place is a must stop for us now. Brisket, bbq, ribs, and chicken. Smokey and sweet, from the first smell in the parking lot on your way in until the last savory bite, this place was awesome. Came in around 12:30 on a Tuesday, was technically full, but with covid spacing, only every other table and booth was occupied, so it felt very open and spacious. Server was pleasant and courteous, offered us a "to go" refill before we left, suggesting this is the norm and we happily accepted. Food was hot and quick. I highly recommend the red neck egg rolls, stuffed with bbq and coleslaw, wrapped up in a crispy hand held crust with dipping sauces! Hubs and I split the the sampler platter with 5 different kinds of protein, slaw, garlic bread (she offered us two slices!) and baked beans that were NOT from a can! Let's start by this location has really gone down hill. Last night we (9 adults& 2kids) went in for two birthdays and this was absolutely the worst experience we have ever had at Sonnys. They brought out some of the food for the adults this food had to be sent back cause it was all cold plus the pork sandwich had blood still coming out of the pork. Then they brought out a couple other plates that was missing items and finally they brought the kids food. The kids hotdog was hard as a rock fries where cold. The four year old told his mom that the food was bad. We told Justin the manager and he rolled his eyes several times HE ABSOLUTELY IS A HORRIBLE MANAGER his attitude was as if we are bothering him. He was doing the cooking also which makes this even worse as he come out with his apron on. This place was not busy. I'm seeing why when you drive by after 6 this place is dead. We ALWAYS try to stop here on our way to and from Jacksonville to Gainesville. My family's favorite things are all you can ribs, redneck egg rolls, and the pulled pork sandwich. But MY ultimate favorite is something I request. Basically, I get the Sweet Carolina pulled pork sandwich that comes with coleslaw and the oh so good tangy, mustard based sauce. Sorry to give a bad review,but we went to sonnys last night and got the salad bar.We have never had such awful tasting salad,it was old and wilted, just nasty.We told the waitress about it and she said she would tell the manager.The lettuce was also brown just nasty lookin. Manager came out and said they would put fresher lettuce out.It was a lot better than the stuff that was out there.They really need to keep up on keeping fresh lettuce out there.For the price they charge for their salad bar they need to keep it fresher!! read more

After visiting the Sonny's BBQ locations in Jacksonville and Orange Park, I have to agree this is the best location in NE Florida. The staff are always friendly and the food is delivered correctly and quickly. I have never seen other locations garnish your plate with orange slices or parsley, but this location cares about presentation. The restaurant is always clean and inviting. Each time I have been here, the manager is always visible; either greeting customers or assisting staff. I will keep going back for their sliced pork and chicken. read more

we frequently visit this restaurant as we live in Starke...Always have been pleased EXCEPT for our recent visit on July 4th 2017. The worst food ever...the fries were burnt and you could tell that they were sitting under a heat lamp for a while. The sandwich was soggy (Big Deal Turkey and Pork) the service ( Leslie T., table 6-4 @ 1:52PM) was less than adequate she knocked over salt and sauce on my husband...I guess she was doing her side work (filling bottles on the table)....a huge disappointment and it will be a while before we return...on the upside the 1/2 & 1/2 tea was great. read more

First time in 20 years I wanted to go to a Sonny's. My wife that normally likes the place only ate half her pulled pork sandwich. She said it was too dry, and the baked beans were worse than we expected. I ordered the Saint Louis style ribs. They were dry, and the barbecue sauce cooked on them didn't help. Got the beans also, and an extremely small baked potato. Only good thing about this meal was the garlic toast, and sweet tea. Service was ok. As a Texas girl, I am inundated with BBQ, and while Sonny's isn't the best I have ever had, by far, it certainly held it's own. Their sweet tea was excellent, and I loved that you get the choice of what type of BBQ sauce to experiment with. I have been here twice now, and I have to say that the service is bit disappointing. The first time, it was just so busy that our waitress didn't really notice us much, and the second time a waitress spilled an entire tray (about four or five glasses) of sweet tea and water on my father-in law as she was trying to pass through the crowded isle. Now, I have been a waitress before, and I know god awful things like that happen, but the sad thing was, instead of her being apologetic, and offering a discount or some sort of resolution, she kept saying how embarrassed she was. Over and over how embarrassed she was. Imagine how my dad-in law felt?! Bad bad service. Next time I'm back in Starke, I will suggest we get take out instead :( read more

If you like beef jerky on a stick, I recommend the ribs. Make sure you drink plenty of liquids as there's no way to get something this dry down, while not chocking to death, without a steady flow of some sort of liquid. The only thing worse than the food was the service. read more
