Terrible. Cuts of meat that were put on my wife's plate and mine were fat and gristle. Extremely upset about it. Also, I'm really sick from it. Stomach was killing me all night. We always stop at Sonny's while on the road as none around New Orleans area. We were in Starke FL area visiting relatives and end up there twice in 3 days! As always, their food is fairly consistent throughout the country. It was served by a wonderful server for our party of 11. Only one side item was missed but food was warm and fresh...good as always. read more

I honestly wish I could say that this review is to highlight how improved this restaurant is, but no. It has actually sunken even lower. After placing an order and waiting almost an hour, the inept employees simply told my wife that they "lost" the order. This isn't new. They constantly forget items, fail to listen, and are quick to dismiss any complaint you have. Seriously, avoid this place like the plague. If I could give this place zero or negative stars, I would. 04-04-19: Apparently, Sonny's has now decided to "shrink" the size of their steak burger, while still charging the price of a regular sized one. I'm assuming they're hoping people are dumb enough to not notice the dramatic change in size of both the bread and the patty. Want a really good burger that's not just delicious but worth the price? Full service restaurant with take-out window along the side. I don't know why the sonnys in NC don't taste like the ones in FL (well, I have my theories), but luckily I pass this location on my drive down to see the fam and get to stop in. As the others have said, the pork is pretty darn good. pulled or sliced, you'll be happy. Add cornbread, some Mac n cheese, maybe even Texas toast (there are actual vegetables on the menu as well, but why bother... unless it's the fried okra) and it's pretty heavenly. On days when I'm in the mood for something lighter, they have an endless salad bar for $7.99, and for a $1 more you can add on a side of whatever BBQ meat you'd like. I did notice this last time there was one option of diced meat (I guessed brisket) already on the salad bar, but I like mine hot from the kitchen. The salad bar is pretty standard fare - spinach or mixed greens, assorted vegetables and cheeses, potato salad, pasta salad, etc. They have a selection of salad dressings to ladle as well as some individual packets - non fat ranch, vinaigrette, etc. But piled high next to the bacon bits and crackers is the bowl sent from above - the mini sweet potato muffins. So good. I don't care whether they're frozen or freshly baked - I just want to eat the whole lot. Servers are always friendly, really decent lunch specials, beverage cups are ridiculously large, and even though it's a sit-down restaurant I can get in and out and back on the road in pretty good time (even during the peak lunch hours). We stop to eat at Sonny's. New accommodation were updated and sharp. Had salad and smoke'n wings. Ranch dressing had no flavor and was watery. Tea was great and tasted like tea! Shocked by how much pepper were on the fries for my daughters kids meal. When we asked the server if it was normal to be that way she said yes that the fries come seasoned like that even if they're for kids. I was hoping it was just a mistake because they were busy but apparently it was on purpose. I ordered the all you can eat pulled pork with onion rings and a sweet potato. For Our appetizer, we ordered fried prickles. The food was delicious and perfect. The restaurant looked clean and tidy but the service was a bit lacking. With a recommendation from our Waitress (April) I think it was, We ordered the chopped brisket sandwich and the meat was cold and dry! I've eaten at Sonny's a lot! We love this Sonny's. The service is always great and the food is always fresh and quick. We stop here on our way to Sanibel Island because it is about half way. We picked up Sliced Pork and a slab of baby back ribs. We were so disappointed!!!! The baby back's were not only chatted much more than just open fire pit cooking would explain but after tasting them the mystery was solved!! They were undoubtedly warmed over!! The sliced pork looked like it was what was left of sliced and pulled pork mixed. Gave the appearance of just dumping what was left over in a box!! There was no thought to quality or taste! Been to several different Sonny's, so when passing through the area we decided to stop at this one in Starke. Started off just fine, although having the salad bar right by the entrance was off-putting. Greeted promptly and brought large ice waters. Ordered the family feast as we usually do at the Palm Harbor, FL location we frequent and asked if they would sub an extra side for the teas like they do at our local Sonny's. (We don't drink sweet tea for heath reasons.). Server didn't think so, but said she'd check with the manager. They refused. Our local Sonny's offers this (we never ask) and also offers the salad bar instead of the side salad my husband always orders. This location did neither. Food was as tasty as I'd expect. Just a little disappointed to pay for something we didn't get. read more

This was really good a few years back. A solid go to location in the small town of starke. Would have went with 1 star if the employees were not so friendly. The last year or so the bbq is always real fatty, like they may be buying very poor quality meats. My last trip here I received a corn on the cob that was very cold, not even heated at all. My brisket was nothing but fat. Another person in our party said that her bbq sandwich was hot around the edges, but ice cold in the center. Hopefully a new owner or manager will come in and make changes. And this has become common. I heard other patrons complaining on my most recent visit. read more

Had the platter. $16 gets you enough food for two people. I had no breakfast and there was going to be no supper, so this was perfect. All meats were a little too moist for me. Giving the impression of being under-cooked. There were 3 large pork ribs, quarter-chicken (breast), and brisket. The brisket should have been more tender. Plus someone had drizzled chipolte sauce on the brisket. I hate chipolte sauce. And there were 4 bottles of diferent sauces at each table! Luckily much of the brisket was covered by the dish of green beans. The beans were out of a can. Coleslaw was in a separate dish, and OK. Easily one of the best BBQ restaurants I've ever been to! The ribs were divine and so was the brisket. The cornbread muffins were so moist and delicious it was like eating cake. And I would definitely recommend the baked beans. Best I've had in years! Only drawback was the wait (it's a popular place!) Had to wait about 10 min for a table and another 10 for a server. Best Sonny's location hands down. Food is always fresh and tasty and the staff is usually very friendly and attentive. Love the Sweet n Smokey ribs here. The cornbread is amazing in my opinion. Their mac n cheese is made really creamy and cheesy just the way I like it! The ribs are always very fresh and tender like they were just made, unlike other locations I have been to that seem to serve over cooked or non tender ribs.
