Yes!!! 15 mom's before closing, counting down the cash drawer and Nick served us with a smile and no irritation. My first time at Sonny's BBQ and I loved the service and the food. The sweet tea was no where near as sweet as Louisiana tea but since I don't care for sugar it was right up my alley. I had the the pulled chicken sandwich with corn on the cob and it was delicious. The meat was tender and juicy with a Smokey flavor. Added the BBQ sauce and was in heaven. Ate without bread, there was nothing wrong with the bread. It's a good place to take a college student! The food was pretty tasty but you can't really mess up Barbecue that has been the same since day one for Sonny's. I think the reason I gave 3 stars was the salad bar. It was just not that good looking. The iceberg lettuce looked dry. The condiments didn't look fresh. At first, I didn't think there was a salad bar because everything was "sunken" into the ice. So I guess that's part of the presentation. I think they could work on that. My 83 yr old uncle had a hankering for bbq ribs yesterday. Lives out in Greensboro FL n he no longer drives. I was headed to Tallahassee for groceries and a few things at Lowes. With mask on and sanitizer wipes in hand I fought the crowd at Lowes and found the items I needed. Phoned my order in to Sonny's on N Monroe. Pick up time 1:45pm.. full slab of baby backs for uncle, with bbq beans, baked tater n corn bread. Ordered sliced brisket plate w slaw n bbq beans for myself. Was running a few min late, called to alert the restaurant. They couldn't find my order....When did you call it I'm sir? I said about 1 1/2 hours ago. I wouldn't see it until 10 minutes prior to pickup time she said, I replied, that was 5 min ago! Please hold sir, I will look into this. Came back on - I found it, just pull into one of the pickup spaces and we'll bring it out. This conversation took place while I was in line at Publix up the street. Meal was around $35. Got to Harold's - 35 miles away. His ribs n such were as he likes em. Fall off the bone smokey n juicy. My brisket - portion size honestly looked like a child's size plate. Really? Maybe 3oz of beef. Absolutely Zero smoke ring, no bark. Almost like slow roasted in the oven. Who's minding the store during this Pandemic? I've eaten in at Sonny's many times over the years. I want to say a big thanks to the staff of Sonny's BBQ Monroe street!!!!!!!! We have been there a cpl of time for previous visits in the last few years. I don't know if they had a new turnover of employees or Management, but Oh my goodness, let me tell you that they have got this thing well oiled and fine tuned as much as you can probably get. Keep in mind that the hiring market for servers and employees in Tallahassee is not the best. But from time to time you meet people who know how to pick and recruit, and hire the right type of folks for their establishment. This team has it going on like "Stacy's Mom." (lol) They were spot on from the time we walked in, to the time we walked out and the food settling in our stomachs is just the love we took away from the restaurant, that kept us saying, "Man that was good!!" and "Man they really broke it down up in there!" Kiowa was our server. Ask for her. She did not miss a thing. Nothing. I mean, nothing. She deserves the tips she makes and she earns it. We always stop to eat BBQ when we're traveling. The food tasted good, nice clean store and polite staff. Most the sides we ordered was out so that was a little disappointing to the party. I ordered a side salad and wow either it was a fluke or it was really served like that, I was expecting a small bowl of salad and it came out on a huge plate. The highlight for our visit was the service. We had a wonderful waitress that was friendly and attentive. I had the sliced pork dinner with BBQ beans and fries. It was good not great. Warm honey golden woods, well-lit, the decor is nothing to write home about, but I don't go to BBQ places to be visually knocked outta my socks. The food is great. That I will always give them. Conistant, moist, basic stomach filling 'Murican food. The reason for the three stars is the service. They never stand out to me. They do their job, it's never BAD service. It's just never great service. Just lukwarm to good service. So they get lukwarm to good marks from me. I'm a fan of the 1/4 dark chicken and pork combo, again I normally get fries and let the server play with the second side, choosing for me. My +1 is a brisket kinda guy. Another place that serves a vat 'o soda. Not very expensive, won't set you back more than say $15 with drink. Give it a try, it's good. read more

I would give less than a one star rating if I could! In Tallahassee during a work trip, I figured Sony's would be safe, but I was absolutely wrong! The waitress took 10 minutes to bring out my water. I waited 25 minutes for my baby back ribs and when they finally arrived, they were unbelievably fatty and probably had more fat than meat. I asked for the manager, a very young guy, who said he would personally select a new slab of ribs. I was tired of waiting and asked for them to go. Upon getting to my hotel, I was utterly disgusted and nauseated by what I saw. The ribs were even fattier and the meat was tough as rubber. The fries were barely cooked and cold. The manager clearly wanted to make a point by giving me an even worse meal. His name was something like Alex Doul or Doll - and I will be writing an official complaint about him and the food. Completely inedible!!! Easily the worst dinning experience I've ever had. The waitress was incompetent, the manager an ass, and the food was beyond disgusting. This place has a 2015 trophy for BBQ competition. If the competition was for bland and dry I agree. Ribs: dry, gummy and chewy. I bet they were sitting for like an hour under heated lamps. My husband and I went for lunch on Friday. I ordered a 2 meat (chicken and St. Louis ribs) with corn bread and 2 sides. My husband said he would get the lunch portion of baby back ribs being I got the other kind of ribs. Being that I got cornbread, he would get the garlic toast. Meals arrived, no cornbread for me; my husband had no ribs-some other chopped meat instead. Waitress apologized said she would bring the correct order for him and reduce the price, as well as bring my cornbread. I was totally done with my meal when his ribs arrived. The waitress took our credit card and was gone 20 minutes with it. I went to the kitchen area track her down for the credit card as well as the bill and to tell her I would just pay cash. "Too late, I already cashed you out" was her response. Not only were we overcharged for the ribs, but there was no reduction in the price as she had indicated there would be. It took over 1 1/2 hours for this lunch....glad this wasn't for people who were taking time from work to have lunch....Tried to let the manager know-asked someone if they were the manager and they said "no"-didn't offer to get the manager. I am impressed. New, totally updated and fresh. Our first visit to the relaunch of this stalwart franchise. The open kitchen allows views of chefs deftly finishing the Q and slicing entrees. Employees bustled about gathering plates and drinks and tending to grateful customers. Lovely front porch seating was empty tonight, due to weather concerns, but the space was very inviting. Tonight we opted for the salad bar with Q on the side. Mine was smoked turkey. It was lightly smoked, very moist and fork tender. Fantastic. Sonny's Red American Ale added a perfect pairing. Local Proof brews were also on tap. My companions pulled pork was tender and very tasty. A choice of sauces allowed for everyone's tastes to be satiated. The salad bar was fresh and had many options of greens and veggies. Prepared additions included potato salad, macaroni salad and other prepped choices, for diners indulgence. Self serves tend to get messy and this one could have used a bit more attention to keep it neat. Everything was very crisp and fresh. The three sided bar made for an inviting space to relax, grab a beer or wine and dine. I have eaten at Sonny's for many years, across the south. This new storefront demonstrates that the franchise has really stepped up their game to compete head to head with boutique barbecue joints turning foodie hipster heads across the South. Always a great deal on BBQ. The wait staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. My favorite restaurant in town. The chopped brisket is really good quality and has just enough fat for great flavor. I've been a Sony's customer for a little under 50 years and it's always been my Go-To BBQ place in Florida because it came closet to the incredible Memphis BBQ I grew up with. Unfortunately, times change and all too often Corporate Greed rears its ugly head. Apparently, that's happened to Sonny's. The last pulled pork sandwich I had tasted like the imitation pulled pork you can buy at the grocery store, full of preservatives to the point that the flavor tasted artificial. I told a friend about it and he informed me that Sonny's no longer cooks their meat locally. They cook it at some regional kitchen and ship it precooked to their restaurants thus the reason for the preservatives. And that means that Sonny's advertising claim of "local pit masters since '68" is a remnant from the past. Too bad but I've had 40+ years of great barbecue from Sonny's so I guess I should be grateful for that. read more

Basically- Ok food I thought (keep in mind I am not big on pork and preferred my dad's brisket)!!!! Some people (my mother in law LOVE their brisket) would come here at least once a week! The cornbread is awesome. Plus the salad bar is nice for veggies and diet followers. It is a good place to take a group because there is something for everyone. So it is worth ordering. Well, I'M impressed. I know I can get good BBQ at most Sonny's and the chain is pretty consistent. This is the first visit back in Tallahassee for a visit since the Covid-19 epidemic. I have begun giving scores to restaurants of 1-10 for Covid preparedness and my ability to feel safe while eating. I mean I love to eat out but I'm not willing to die for a burger. They got a 10 in my book. I mean I go out to relax! First we were treated with a fully masked staff. Then they had a card on our table that said the table had been sanitized by Christine. Then Cara, our server came also wearing a mask delivering paper menus and pre wrapped in sealed plastic utensils. The tables were distanced. Cara was very attentive and we had a delightful meal. No condiments were left on the table but were brought to you freshly wiped down. They took care at every turn. I felt safe and because of good health practices, good food and good service I will be returning. And often.
