Not being a salesperson myself, I admit I am fascinated by a good pitch - and this kid put on quite a show. He got out of the company's little white truck and came to my door because he noticed me in the driveway - no other reason - don't believe their pitch that they have "extra" meat and customers in your area. I went ahead and paid $225 (he told me numerous times "not to tell my neighbors" what I paid - so I'm telling you) for a case of meat and fish - aprx 15 lbs frozen. It's all soaked in salt and chemicals which help it's size and appearance in the package - but causes tremendous shrinkage when cooked. They get one star (over zero) because the food was edible - but that's about it. The problem is that the business is shady (they have a C- with the BBB), the sales guy was shady, and the quality is very shady. I absolutely do not recommend purchasing anything from this company. ok, so I never thought I would buy meat from a truck, it does sound a little weird... but this is the best steak I have ever bought. My freezer is now always stocked with either their chicken or steak. The steak cuts are a little thin, but are delicious and make for the perfect serving size. The convenience works perfectly for our busy schedule and now we are having tasty romantic dinners every night. We recommend this meat 100%. read more

Like many of the other reviewers, I would award these people with zero stars. The truck drove past our house and I called to my husband who was in the yard (I thought it looked interesting). Well the driver noticed my attention and pulled over, I just thought he needed directions'. He told us he had a few spare boxes of meat, and were we interested in buying beef, chicken etc. We asked him what he had (initially seeing Sonoma Cattle Exchange, we mistakenly thought the meat was local, so was happy to talk to him), he asked to come into our house, under the guise of setting the box onto a table so he could show us what he had. That was the biggest problem - once you let them in - there's no way out of the pushy sales tactic. This guy was in his twenties and smelled like stale cigarettes. So much so, that I had to leave and stand outside for a few minutes. Gross. My hubby convinced him to give us one box only - of mixed steak and chicken for $320, which in hindsight was a complete rip off. Only after he left did we realize that he completely lied about the origin of the steak - the boxes have printed stickers that say - Product of USA or Canada or Mexico. WHAT??? Well which is it? I'm pregnant and was happy to invest in local product, but not knowing where this meat comes from I am personally very hesitant to eat it, let alone let my husband touch it. I am throwing out the John Dory tonight, the Whiting will be next. I tried my best recipes on these fillets and served them up to my boys. We all agreed, great job in the preparation and cooking, the fish is just old. The fillets are absolutely frozen when bought, and kept hard as a rock till I thaw them in warm water and prepare them. Egg and bread them fried on top of onions in butter, make a white wine, garlic and butter sauce and saute with mushrooms, IT DOESN"T MMATTER. The fish is old. I am sad these boys crossed my path. Now I have to throw this stuff out, if I donate it to the poor, someone with a not so good stomach could get pretty sick. My family ordered from Sonoma Cattle exchange about four months ago. We were given about 5 fillet minion's 6 new york steaks, 10 hamburger patties, 6 strip steaks, and 10 flat iron steaks. I still can not believe we got all of this for just $200. In these hard economic times a deal like this is a steal for my family of five. The steaks are remarkably tasty ,and the pre packaged patties of hamburgers take only minutes to prepare. But I would have to say my favorite part of all has been their attentive costumer service. Same story, in the neighborhood, live in St. Francis Wood, have some left over meat, late in the day, great deal, half price, etc... These guys just walked into my office, with their nice looking spread of meats. They talked a good game but when the bottom line came out they wanted $350 for a case (of 6 different types of beef) and they'd throw in the case of an assortment of chicken for "free." So when I came back saying $350 is way too much to spend on meat, I was offered 30lbs of meat for $150 and I could pick and choose. Smash cut to them leaving with a check and my running to the scale (after quickly looking at Yelp reviews) and low and behold my "30lbs" of meat was actually 20lbs. Luckily they haven't sped down the street yet and I catch up with them and inform them of the weight discrepancy. Unfortunately after going through the whole rigamarole of weighing and re-weighing, I finally noticed the weights on the boxes themselves. Then the guy tells me in 5 YEARS of doing this, he never noticed the weight on the box. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Instead of giving me a full 30lbs of meat, they go up to 25lbs and when I still want to get up to the 30 I was promised, they decided to give me back my check and move on with their meat. Fine by me. Most of the people who wrote bad reviews here haven't even tried the product, so I find it ridiculous that they wrote reviews. Yes, I agree, it's weird to buy meat out of a truck. But my husband and I took a chance the first time and it turned out great for us. I think the meat is really good-we like to keep our freezer stocked because we entertain a lot, and we always get a ton of compliments on the steaks. While I don't think it's much cheaper than buying at a grocery store (and you have to be a good negotiator: they will sell the $359 box of steaks for $200 and throw a box or two of chicken in as well), the convenience is a real plus. Strange high-pressure sales pitch - done on the street. I am from Sonoma, and actually had a customer who worked for this company (I saw him driving the truck around) and thought he seemed like a nice guy, so I assumed it was a just a local meat company - I had no idea this was such a scam. I was approached by the driver of the truck while walking, and asked if I lived in the neighborhood. I assumed he needed directions, but this is his intro for his sales pitch. I actually did need something for dinner, so I let him show me the meat. Even he started by saying "It's got some condensation on it, so it doesn't look that great." He tried to sell me cases of meat, and I said I didn't need that much, so he tried to sell it to me at half price. I just said no. Lucky for me, he said he had to sell it "by the case." As someone else mentioned here, I wrote a check for the merchandise (which has been decent). We bought a fish and chicken package (they said if we bought the fish for $391 well, $376 and then they added on because I wrote a check, they'd throw in the chicken). Well, as a previous review mentioned, they put the $391 through twice!!! A check? They switch it to an electronic ACH with the routing number and account number and run it TWICE?! When I called corporate, no one answers and you cannnot get through to anyone. So I called my bank and they reversed one of the $391 charges. So guess what I get in the mail? A COLLECTION NOTICE!! I am now on the "bad check" list! WOW! Attorney wrote a letter, and I plan to contact the athorities. What a mess. Teach me to buy from strangers selling meat from the back of their truck. I told him I was a vegetarian so he tried to sell me chicken and I told him vegetarians do not eat flesh from animals. He then tried to sell me fish and he was rude and bossy for no reason. Don't get talked into buying any of this meat. First of all, it's pricey and definitely not better than what you can get in a local market. Meat is inferior. I got sucked into buying the Top Choice Sirloin from a kid named Mario who was selling the meat from a truck marked "Sonoma Cattle Exchange". Even gave me his cell phone (707-483-9709) Stupid me, I fell for it. I was under the impression that this was locally raised beef. If you look at the labeling on the box the steaks come in, it will state 'PRODUCT OF USA, MEXICO OR CANADA" ......AND IT WAS PACKED IN AURORA, IL. 60502. THEY SHOULD BE REPORTED. Box only states "Genuine Midwestern Beef". "grain fed", Top Loin Sirloin, no mention of "Choice". What a fool I was. The steaks each weigh about 6 oz. and the price per pound was way more than they should of been. A total rip off. 7 on your Side should be alerted and this company should be investigated! I agree with the other posters. Last night a strange and wirey character came to our front door and knocked hastily. I was expecting company, so I answered. He said he was delivering to another customer in our area. Pretty much the same M.O. as the other yelpers have stated. When I told him that we weren't interested, this did not seem to deter him. I wouldn't say he treated me badly, but just the creepy, shifty nature of this guy screamed weirdo! Needless to say, no matter how good the beef is, their tactics as a company are a little off. He wasn't friendly, he wasn't pleasantly dressed and he looked as if he hadn't showered and shaved in a while. But the taste of the meats weren't anything I had tasted before in a meat product-very tasteless. Plus they shrunk up like no other meat I have ever seen. $300. Ugh. I bought from them thinking they were a hometown business and always want to support our local businesses. About every month or so, these people come to my neighborhood. I have never bought anything from them, because, as I told them, I do not EVER buy meat out of the back of a truck. I always ask them not to come back and they always come back. Last time, I was in the middle of a business phone call and could not get rid of the guy. I ended up shutting the door in his face. Don't be fooled! This business is a scam. November 22nd I purchased meat from the door to door salesman, Greg who was in my neighborhood. All seemed well until I saw that they debited my account twice for the purchase. I called the office several times in Nov and early Dec to get the money back. You can only leave a msg and I received no call back. I contacted my bank and completed a dispute form and Dec 13th the bank credited my account back for the extra debit. On Dec 23rd I received a notice that Sonoma Cattle had sent my account to COLLECTIONS!!! They never called me, wrote me or tried to contact me once about this, their error. They falsely took money out of my account and then sent me to collections for their poor accounting practices. I've now called them every day since the 23rd with no response. I now have to seek legal recourse to clear up this matter, again it's their error! Please don't let this happen to you.. Skip the "so called" good deal.., it's obviously a shady business. They came to Noe Valley San Francisco this past Saturday. I was so disturbed by them that right after they left I immediately looked them up on Yelp. Over priced substandard choice meats !! Some of the frozen meats have preservatives added. Just get your meat at Costco. Safeway & Lucky's have been decent lately. Most local markets have Harrison meats which is ok. The best meat I've found is Whole Foods Organic Beef, very pricy. Truck looked legit - I almost fell for it. Said he's already made 19 deliveries in my neighborhood today. Really? In Upper Rockridge where people pride themselves on their backyard gardens, vegetarianism and organic farmer's markets? Something didn't add up. Similar stories as the below, except when I went into the house to grab a checkbook, I decided to do a quick Google and found all of these Yelp reviews. Thank God! I almost fell for his fake "deal" of $200 for porterhouse steaks, T-bones and ground meat patties. Given I found nothing that referenced organic or grass-fed, I opted away from this AMAZING opportunity and told the guy I wasn't the meat eater in the house and wouldn't know what I was buying. He wasn't overly pushy, maybe tried to convince me for another minute or so, but after reading all of this, I'm soooo glad I didn't do it! The company was changing management at the time I requested to exchange the products as is promised in the receipt. First let me say I have never had a good steak at The Cattlemens Restaurant in Petaluma. I am a local home owner professional in Penngrove, with a restaurant background. I have noticed these guys in their trucks around the neighbor hood for the past 6 years or so. At first skeptical, I thought OK lets check it out. Pro's: (4.5 stars for the meat) The meat for me is very good, fresh, properly frozen. So far the fillet's, ground chuck patty, and one other were very good, to 'best' (on the burgers). Decent and average marbling, not to much fat, no toughness yet, with more cuts to try. The pre packed portions are the right size for an adult who needs to not go gluttonous. All meat is trimmed to about 1" thick avg. I unwrap, and flash thaw in a large baggie in hot tap water before grilling. There doesn't appear to be any treatments or injection or moisturizers as with Safeway , who's Ranchers Reserve is the worst on the planet. Cost is about $9.07 per lb avg based on 21.5 lbs if purchased for $180.00. grade is USDA Choice. Cut by a Chicago area processor. The cost is for good to excellent flavor. One reviewer said order had 'liver' taste. I get that from the fresher un-aged meat from Costco. Cons: 2.5 stars for level of ans style of sales presentation- Nice enough no frills guy, so no problems for me. Has a well rehearsed company style sales pitch strategy. This will be tough, and off putting for people who have trouble with aggressive salesmen, and those who can't find amusement in the ever changing story line. Also don't look for 2" thick $25 restaurant cuts. They offer just a one size variety box of beef. I've heard quality complaints about the quality of Omaha and Schwan's. If this was my company I'd make the sales people wear a butchers smock, have plenty of literature and offer if not a free 2 piece sample then a 6 piece $20 sample. read more
