They day finally came when we needed a new home for my father who had lived independently for 92 years. I cannot express the relief and happiness of the team at Sonoma House in Carrollton, Tx! Dad is well taken care of, active, fed and loved by the staff and residents. He told me he never gives anything an A+, but this is 2 BIG THUMBS UP! I was concerned he would wither in Assisted Living, but he is thriving. Highly recommended. read more

We moved my father-in-law to Sonoma House a couple weeks ago and we are delighted. He is doing better and more engaged since moving in. He loves the food. They take great care of all their residents. And the event today for veterans was outstanding. We have seen excellent care for him and others, and all the families we have met rave about the care, too. read more

We toured with the Sonoma House , and it was a very nice place. I placed my father there and I am at peace knowing that the management team and care staff there to meet his needs. Everyone I've dealt with there has been has been very nice and truly cares about what is best for my father. The community is a small house environment that makes it easy for my father to navigate either with his walker or his wheelchair. They have plenty of activates that he enjoys and a nice patio for fresh air. From Outpatient Therapy to Home Health Care on site this is a Great Place for your loved ones. My wife was in Sonoma House memory care from June 2022 until mid-April 2023. I finally decided to move her to another facility as, in my opinion, the quality of her care declined significantly, especially after January 2023. Also, in December, she fell in her room and was not discovered for some time. She had hit her head on something and had lost a fair amount of blood, and had to got to the ER. The facility was not using the bed alarm that was supplied by hospice. As of the time I moved her out in April 2023, they still were not regularly using the bed alarm to my knowledge. Turnover of caregivers is a big problem at Sonoma House. Apparently the new caregivers are not given much information regarding the individual issues with the residents. At least it seemed that way with my wife. I was continually having to relate my wife's issues to new caregivers. Turnover of facility nurses was also a problem while my wife was there. The one that was assigned to my wife's house at the time I took her out was not very good, in my opinion. She did not communicate well with me or my wife's hospice nurse. This could be a problem for the families of those residents that are not able to continually monitor the care of their loved ones. They apparently have a policy of no gratuities for the caregivers. When I gave some at the end of the year, the caregiver that my wife liked the best was moved to another house. So, my mistake, but the only victim there was my wife. One of my wife's issues was being able to feed herself adequately. Sonoma House did not seem to have any way to address this issue, so I had to provide (at my additional cost) high calorie nutritional drinks to make sure she would get enough calories. She lost about 40 pounds the first 3-4 months after going into Sonoma House. She was overweight when she went in, so fortunately this was caught before it got dangerous. I should have recognized it sooner, but Sonoma House was not very helpful in this matter. After being somewhat stable for a few months, she lost another five pound the last month she was in the facility. I did not find out about that until I decided to move her to another facility. Again, this could be a problem for families of residents that can not closely monitor the care of their loved ones. I also had issues with the office at Sonoma House. Every month I had to call in to get them to send the latest invoice to my long term care provider. Every month. I was never very satisfied with the overall cleanliness of the facility. My wife's room and bathroom would go without adequate cleaning often. The overall appearance of the common area is a bit shabby. The front door lock needed repair for some time before it broke completely one night as I was leaving. The outside area that was available to the residents was not maintained for most of the time my wife was there. Be sure to read your paperwork closely before you sign it. The "community fee" is non-refundable, but they will also charge you for 30 days notice. I take responsibility for this, when I needed to put my wife in the facility, it was a difficult and emotional time for me, and I didn't read the paperwork that closely. If I was told about this verbally, I don't remember. My advice is to look for other alternatives. Find a facility that has separate cleaning and cooking staff, so that the caregivers can better watch the residents instead of doing other duties. Ask about how your loved one's care is communicated on a regular basis. I eventually concluded that Sonoma House was the not the right place for my wife. My responsibility - I should have done more homework before choosing Sonoma House. I now have her in a facility where I get daily updates on her condition, and I think she will do much better with the time she has left. read more

Beware of the management of Sonoma House. If you write a bad review, they will simply deny it, claiming they have "proof" that the review is false. When my loved one was there, they were so inept, I was constantly in contact with them trying to get issues corrected. When the level of care finally got so bad, I just gave it up and moved my loved one to a different facility. She is doing much better and has recovered from the low level of care she received at Sonoma House. Please consider other facilities instead of Sonoma House. read more

Knowing that my mother would need more help in the future, I researched assisted living/memory care places for years. Sonoma House always stayed at the top of my list. Each house has 16 rooms surrounding a common area and kitchen. This way the residents have quick access to the aides, events, and dining. There are always at least 2 to 3 sometimes 4 aides in the building. Each patient/resident receives personal care, because they are more well known by the helpers. My mother has now been there for five months, and her health has improved. I am very pleased. read more

Nice buildings/layout. Admin folks are professional however, if you plan on having a relative stay here you need to be there OFTEN to make sure they are doing their jobs. HIGH turnover. Many things that are promised and you are charged for (Levels) are not done consistently because of high turnover and people who are either untrained, inexperienced. Very disappointing but we are not going to take parent out because of the hassle so all we can do is complain but things basically don't change. If you ask for handyman work, count on it either not getting done or asking several times. Parking is awful as very few spaces if there's an event. read more

Sonoma House has a unique concept unlike any other community. This community has 7 houses. Each house is 8500 sq ft with courtyards where residents can go outside when they want to, unlike other communities that have courtyards that rarely get used. Sonoma also has only 16 residents per house with private rooms; they do not have any semi-private rooms. Each resident has their own bathroom, no Jack & Jill shared bathrooms. At Sonoma House each house has its own license (7 licenses), where as other communities have 1 license for their entire community. That means the state comes and inspects Sonoma House 7 times a year opposed to only 1 time a year; state inspects all communities for a reason. I have to say the most impressive thing is that there has not been any deficiencies or violations in any of the 7 houses since they have opened 4 yrs ago; Oh yeah, Sonoma House is also a non-profit community. Please notice that Mr. Stroud did not say that my mother was not over medicated with another resident's medication or that she wasn't left on the floor or that her room was not cleaned for a month, etc. Then he posts that I terminated the resident contract, when in fact he sent me a termination letter. I never gave a termination letter to them. I told them I was going to look for another place for my mother, but that is NOT a termination notice. The termination notice must be in writing. Section V-B provides the Resident can terminate the Agreement upon 30 day notice and the Responsible Person gave such notice to the Community on October 28, 2015. Sections V-D 1 & 2 further provide the Community can terminate the Agreement and the Community is giving such notice to Resident on October 28, 2015. The Community further reserves its rights under the Agreement and all applicable policies, including the Provider's Bill of Rights, to discharge the Resident sooner if necessary. I have a family friend who lives at Sonoma House and I've visited there many times. The community and its workers have always been warm and welcoming to me. They seem to genuinely care about the people that live there. Finding a retirement/residence center is never easy for a loved one. I had to recently find one for my grandmother in California and nothing ever seemed 'good enough'. We finally found a great place - but had she been in Dallas area - I would have definitely put her in the Sonoma House. There has always been lots of activities going on when I am there and the residents seem happy and to be well cared for. So, while I don't have first hand knowledge - my experience has been good and I would put my loved one there in a heartbeat! read more
