After being a regular here for years, sadly, I will never be going back to this establishment after being racially discriminated against. Our waitress came over and asked my friend and I 'what we were doing' after she saw us talking instead of promptly packing our leftovers and leaving. She passive aggressively packed our food for us and made a spectacle of our table of two. Although all other non-black customers were left alone to their respective conversations, and waited on in an attentive manner, it was clear we were not wanted in the restaurant. This experience was very unfortunate considering my friend and I had built a nice rapport with the staff from other experiences. The waitress was very condescending when I answered her questions about how I knew about Korean food/ language. Additionally, the male owner of the restaurant has gone out of his way (multiple times) to not speak to me, nor my table but has spoken to every other person in the restaurant. A linguistic barrier does not exist because I speak the language. This repeated and targeted avoidance occurred during this tragic visit as well. None of the staff bid us farewell- which they do with almost every customer if they have a chance- nor did they apologize for targeting us and making us visibly uncomfortable. I would not recommend going to this place, especially if you are black/brown. Go to Troy/Sterling Heights area instead! read more

TLDR: This restaurant serves large, flavorful portions of food and stays true to authentic Korean cuisine. The service was fine, and the place itself looked inviting. However, I firmly believe the restaurant gave me food poisoning, either from the oysters in the radish salad or the lettuce leaves that were a little expired. For my dinner, I ordered bossam (pork wraps). The banchan (side dishes) the meal came with included radish kimchi, napa cabbage kimchi, potato salad, and seaweed salad, which were all delicious. The bossam itself came with a set of red leaf lettuce, mussangchae (radish salad), ssamjang (soybean dipping sauce), raw garlic and jalapeno, and a saeujeot (salted shrimp) mixture. Notably, some portions of the lettuce leaf did seem past their prime and were soggy or mush. All in all, I enjoyed the entire meal, especially the mussanchae which unusually had oysters in it. What I did not enjoy was the entire week I spent on the toilet after I ate the meal. Had I not been food poisoned, this restaurant would easily have been a 5/5. Because of this and despite the health concerns, I am willing to give the restaurant another shot. The other food options seem very enjoyable. When I think of cities in the U.S. known for authentic Korean food, my mind doesn't immediately jump to Detroit, Michigan - however, I'm always pleasantly surprised when I visit Soora, an unassuming little Korean restaurant in Bloomfield Hills owned by a Korean family. From the outside, the restaurant doesn't look like much - it's located along a busy road surrounded by other various shops ranging from a car wash to a tanning salon. Inside, the restaurant is darkly lit, with a good number of tables (there are both standard tables as well as grill-it-yourself KBBQ tables if you choose to grill your own meat). While not all of the servers are Korean/speak Korean, most of the patrons inside are, which is always a good sign. On a Saturday night at around 6:30pm, the restaurant was around 3/4 full, so my party of four was seated immediately. There's enough variety on the menu to suit everyone's needs: from traditional Korean classics such as Jokbal (pig's trotters) and Gopchang Jeon-Gol (beef tripe hot pot) to more Americanized fare (think Bulgogi and Bibimbap) to Korean-Chinese fusion dishes (e.g. Jjajang-Myun, a black bean sauce noodle, and Tang Soo Yook (deep fried sweet and sour pork/chicken), there will be a dish for anyone. We were quickly served Boricha (Korean barley tea) as well as banchan (traditional Korean side dishes) - this is also a sign of an authentic Korean restaurant! The boricha was soothing and warming on a cold Michigan day, and the banchan was solid if not stellar: the four side dishes were comprised of kimchi (tasted fresh, not quite spicy enough), kkadugi (Korean spicy pickled radish - nice and crunchy), assorted vegetables in a savory vinegar sauce (think seaweed, onions, and carrots), and potatoes in a sweet honey glaze. What was nice was that there were free refills for all the banchan if you asked! I was out with my grandparents and cousin, and we all ordered separate dishes. All main dishes come with a small metal pot of rice for no additional cost, which is a nice addition. My grandparents split a bowl of Woogeoji Galbitang (Spicy Beef Short Rib Soup w/ Cabbage, $16.95). The bowl was a nice size, and the broth was the perfect spice level for them (think a 2 or 3 out of 5 on the spiciness scale). It came with a generous amount of cabbage, which soaked up the flavor of the broth, and the short rib meat on the bones was tender as well. However, there were very few bones with not a lot of meat on them. My cousin ordered their Soondubu Jigae (Soft Tofu Soup w/ Seafood, $13.95). Again, the broth was good and tasted like many soondubu places in Korea, although they weren't very generous with the seafood (you can also swap out the seafood for pork, if you prefer). It's nice that they give you an egg at no additional cost! She also ordered the Yangyum Chicken (Korean Deep-Fried Sweet and Spicy Chicken, $22.95), which comes with quite a lot of large chicken wings/drumsticks in an addictively sweet and spicy sauce. There was a good amount of meat on each piece of chicken, and it tasted high-quality. Additionally, there wasn't too much breading, and the sesame seeds and fresh green onion on top added a good freshness to the dish. Between the soup, rice, and chicken, she wasn't able to finish it all, so she took half of the chicken home, and it reheated up great in the air-fryer the next day! Lastly, I got the Gamja Tang (Spicy Pork Bone Stew w/ Potato & Vegetables - $15.95). The broth was savory and hearty, thickened up by the consistency of the boiled potato. There was a consistent theme here of Soora being generous with vegetables (in this case, lots of cabbage and what seemed to be a whole potato), and a bit stingy with the meat (there were several pork bones in the soup, but none of them had much meat on them). Additionally, in Korea and L.A., this usually comes with kkaennip (perilla leaves), which add a lovely acidity and bitterness to the dish, but I guess Soora doesn't garnish with this, which just made it feel like it was lacking something. Overall, this was a hearty and filling dish, but it lacked enough pork and that signature perilla leaf flavor. Overall, I always enjoy my meals at Soora - while it's not the best Korean food I've ever had, it's consistently decent. Service is fast and friendly, prices aren't cheap but relatively reasonable (especially given the fact that they COULD price-gouge, given the lack of competition in the area), and there's enough variety on the menu that anyone could find something that they like. I should have gotten the combo because the cold noodle soup had an absorbent amount of buckwheat noodles and only had two small thin slices of beef. So not much protein in it. If you live in west bloomfield area, you are in for a treat if you like Korean food. Small unpretentious authentic Korean restaurant with mostly Korean diners. The food here is full of flavor yet somehow NOT overly salty, powdery (like the other Korean soups I've had), or packed with MSG. We got the seafood pancake, dumpling soup, spicy pork stew, cold noodle, kalbi, and Jjajangmyeon. Seafood pancake: lightly fried, minimal dough, lots of seafood. This is the optimal appetizer and will leave you room for dinner. Dumpling soup: can substitute rice cake for more dumplings. Not spicy. Soup is flavorful. Broth is delicious and very drink-able. Spicy pork stew: Perfectly spicy without being too salty or powdery. Couple pieces of pork bone. Comes with rice. Great if you crave something spicy and savory. Jjajangmyeon - lots of sauce yet...not too salty! very good. Great flavor. This is the essence of Jjajangmyeon. Galbi - this was just average. A bit too greasy. The meat was a bit fatty. This galbi is not better than other places. Service was better than other korean restaurants. Barley tea was served and refilled. Bonchon was served - this was average. Everything we had was delicious, fresh and wonderfully prepared I tried so hard to remember what we had and I think I got on most of them in the caption, but we started with egg rolls and dumplings. Apparently the food isn't as good as it used to be, but I came in with no expectations given I've never been here before. My friend stopped by for lunch this past Wednesday and there were a couple other tables occupied, but that was it. The service was nice and friendly; they came to check in on us and made sure we had enough banchan. I enjoyed the beansprouts the most, but the seaweed and kimchi (a bit too fermented for me) were great, too. They also give you barley tea in a pot with little ceramic mugs (reminded me of dimsum style) which was nice. The barley tea smelled strong and warmed us up while we eagerly waited for our food. SOONDAE GUK - 15.95 Wow, this was pretty tasty. I haven't had soondae guk too often, but I liked that there was a good amount of spice in the broth. It was savory and "sweetened" by the cabbage and other ingredients in the soup. I really liked the soondae (given on the side) as well, but sadly they only give you 5-6 pieces per order. Overall, this was a very flavorful and soul-warming soup and I'd definitely come here again for it. There were so many mouth-watering options which made it hard for me to choose when looking at the menu. So Soora is the kind of place that would satisfy the cravings of locals among the targeted ethnicity, but not much else. You know, the "local Korean place". All the dishes we've got (egg jjim, galbitang, oyster pajeon, soondae, bibim mul naengmyeon and kimchi intestines) were quite casually tasty, at a comfortable price, and definitely very Korean. That being said, none of them impressed in any meaningful way, and if you're used to Korean cuisine, then everything was pretty much as expected. C-tier it is. The banchan might feel a bit "Americanized" as per my friend's sentiment (seriously, tomato...), but let's be honest. This is Detroit, and if a place is about to go "full Korean", none of y'all are even gonna eat it. All of the chili-based dishes (kimchi, bibim mul naengmyeon, etc.) had their spiciness toned down quite a bit from "Korean hot" as well, but the flavor was still there. The naengmyeon broth was also a little bit sweet. Aside from that, perhaps the only things worth talking about food-wise are how the oyster pajeon didn't actually have much oyster in it, but you won't notice it just casually dining because of the savoriness of the pancake itself. The honeycomb tripe was also boiled a bit too hard for my liking and had too much of a chew. I also found the restaurant quite cute, despite the initial threatening aura upon arriving at the scene. TL;DR Korean in Detroit. Come if authenticity is what you seek. P.S. This is yet another place I'd rate a 3.5 stars if I could... Also, I forgot to take a picture of the soondae plate. :/ read more

In actuality I'd rate Soora 4.5 stars. The food is incredible, the service good but not 5 star, and the choices plentiful. I do like that the restaurant had photos of the food so you had an idea of what each item was. Everything was super flavorful and tasty. The meal starts with a variety of pickled items -- these are free (or included). And we liked all of them. From there we ordered the hot stone bowl with seafood. Wow. So full of muscles, squid, octopus, and more. And the Japchae (clear noodles with beef and vegetables). I wish there was slightly more beef, but it was delicious. I can't wait to come back. Nephew moved into Novi area and keeping with Korean tradition, we decided to have some black noodles on this move-in day. I called and placed an order for the following: - Jokbal - Gan jja Jang x 3 - Chicken Kang poong gi - Spicy Squid - Kalbi Tang Use the backdoor, on the day I visited, the front door was boarded up... walked in and waited for few minutes. The food was ready to go, I asked for extra kimchi, the owner went to the fridge, pulled out the 1lb kimchi they were selling and gave it to me. Drove 20 minutes back to the house and unpacked everything. They gave us a lot of noodles and they did not travel well unfortunately. Added the jjajang but didn't mix well, ended up adding some of the broth from kalbi tang, others added the liquid from the spicy squid - both helped. If you like your jjajang spicy, add the spicy squid, this in itself is awesome. The kangpunggi was good, spicy squid was decent. They serve cold jokbal, just in case you were expecting a warm one. Jjajang was good, the kangpunggi was good as well... their version is spicy, which was good. Don't throw away the left over sauce, mix in the rice and you have another dish. I gave 4 starts - 3 stars for the food and one extra for the the kimchi! read more

Love this Korean restaurant... just a simple Korean restaurant, no kbbq! I've been here several times and their Korean fried chicken is the bomb! So good! I always have to get it when I eat here. The staff is very nice here and there is more parking in the back of the building The galbi is also very delicious here but we get the bulgolgi set all the time! We stopped by for dinner yesterday night after noticing that this restaurant had jokbal. I enjoy this dish very much. It is served lukewarm (which is traditional and desirable) and is wonderfully sweet and salty. The meat was cut thinly and nicely presented on the tray and the lettuce and sauces it was served with were delicious and fresh. The banchan side dishes were very yummy. The cabbage kimchee was nice and flavourful without being too acidic and the white squash side dish was mild and delicious. The brown rice tea we were served was very satisfying and delicious as well. Overall, the food was excellent and tasted fresh and authentic. Service was a little lacking. Our server did not check in on us until our meal was nearly done and we had ran out of sauce. She was kind enough to refill but we were kind of full by that point. There's two noodle places on Orchard Lake Road that I've been wanting to try, and this is one of them. I decided to come here on Sunday since I was dog sitting in the area and needed something solid besides the usual. Boy, am I glad I did! I know the area well, but still passed the place the first time around. Turned around and pulled in to a very tiny parking lot. As other reviewers have stated, the place from the outside doesn't look very large or impressive from the street, and is quite easy to miss. Walking in, the place is nicer than most Korean or Japanese places I have been to as of late. Not that I need fancy decorating, but some come off as boring, dated and cheaply done. Not here. It's clean, with updated design and has a nicer feel to it. I was greeted right away and seated at a smaller table since it was just me. The host was a real nice gentleman who assisted me in what to order. The menu here is a nice variety of items to choose from, along with pictures. To be honest, the pictures really helped me decide along with the host answering all of my questions. I was torn between the spicy beef and spicy tofu bowls. He said both were mildly spicy and I might be happy with the spicy beef as more people order that. Plus, the spicy tofu I think came with seafood which I wasn't in the mood for anyway, so spicy beef it was. LOL Shortly after my order was placed, an appetizer came out. I have no clue what it was, but I think I can identify it was white rice, and some of the dishes were bean sprouts I think? Some were spicy, some where not. I ate almost all of it and it was a nice addition to my meal. Then, my spicy beef came out. IMPRESSIVE! and SPICY. It was spicier than I had imagined, but I was still able to eat most of it all. The dish not only looked amazing, but tasted amazing as well. I was quite impressed. Not that I was expecting anything less than amazing. I feel like this is how food should be done. The crowd here seems to be regular and people seem to love dining here as much as I do. Granted, its at least $15 and up per person, but I believe you can order dishes to feed a family here which I think are up to $40 a plate. A friend of ours recommended Soora Korean Cuisine to us. We also read the good reviews. We ordered the Jap Chae ( beef with noodles), Korean Seafood Pancake and Soft Tofu and Seafood Soup. All delicious. We had hot tea which was made with roasted barley and corn - never had this before. Very good. I had read (in other reviews) that service was lacking. They were friendly and helpful. If it was busy, I can understand why some would complain. As most restaurants struggle to hire good employees, I recommend practicing patience with the waitstaff when dining out. My wife and I highly recommend this place. We will be back. read more

Impressed with the food here. Good value for what you get. Prices are a little higher than some other places but portion sizes are very good. I liked the banchan a lot here too. Banchan bowls are bigger here and they asked if we wanted more banchan. Some other places will not offer, you have to ask for more. Very good quality in the banchan dishes they make. We were seated with some hot barley tea, ordered the veggie japchae and kimchi jjigae. The banchans came out: broccoli, fish cake, seaweed and kimchi. The fish cake is sweet, kimchi is decent. The japchae noodles are good. The kimchi jjigae was bubbly and hot, but would have liked a bit more rice cake and the kimchi to be stew cooked a bit longer, was still a bit crunchy.
