Not to start off a review by venting, but a little personal touch on why I'm so upset right now might go a long way in understanding why this is a one star review. I have personally been going through quite a bit lately that has led me to purposefully drag myself out of my apartment and channel my life frustrations into healthy activities and ventures. Between travel, trying to find a cat to adopt, and other every day oddities, I decided that I wanted to get back into an old hobby of mine: dancing. What could go wrong, right? I took ballet at a young age and was encouraged to stop, as I looked like a "flat piece of cardboard flapping in the breeze." When I got older, I dabbled in dance in high school, and went on to become a professional mascot for some years. Dancing isn't something that I find hard, and many routines, I am able to easily memorize, and have a lot of fun with. But, you know, I haven't learned an actual serious routine in human-form in nearly 7 years. Relevant. Today, I ventured to SoReal after being advised by Yelp that this would be a great place for "beginners" to come and "learn how to dance." Let me advise you: there was no learning HOW to dance, rather... after 10 minutes of the class, at least 10 eight-counts were shoved down my throat and I realized, I am being taught A dance. One must learn to dance before being taught an actual dance. So, you know, I took my cardboard-flapping body and left the studio mid-class. This wouldn't have happened if SoReal did a few items off the basic customer service checklist. First of all, when I arrived at 4:30 pm for a 5:00 pm class (early to ask questions, get info, etc.) the door was locked and a very bland young man answered the door. He let me in, and was not welcoming or cheerful or anything at all. I was obviously uneasy and frankly, a little shy, to be out doing something so bold after having spent the last few months hiding under a Calvin Klein comforter, downing margarita wine, while binge watching Grey's Anatomy. Despite my personal issues, kindness is a universal language that this man was obviously not fluent in. He did nothing to sell the studio or class to me, not phased whether I stayed or went. He did assure me that anyone attending this class would likely be their first class, and that you don't need any prior knowledge of dancing to attend. So, I went with it. There were about 10 people in my class, none of whom were very friendly. They stayed mostly to themselves during the warm up and stretching, which was fine by me. But the instructor was a very heavy-set young lady who seemed to be gasping for air after the set of stretches. Then, she played us a clip of the song we'd be learning the choreography to, and within seconds, she was shouting, "And then you do this! This! And this!" First of all, have you ever heard of an 8-count? Do you know how to break it down for us "beginners?" And when you picked on the little Asian guy in the class for adding his own style to a move, did you mean to insult him? I had all these questions streaming through my head as the instructor sped up the pace on a choreography that was FAR from beginner. We didn't practice with music through any of this. I finally gave up about 20 minutes in the class. I wasn't enjoying myself. It wasn't a beginner choreography (or even a good choreography at that). No one was at the front desk when I left, so I was unable to get a refund on my lousy $12. Basically, I left here feeling like I paid $12 to feel even more badly about myself. I came here for the grand opening. I wasn't all that impressed with the location. It's in a little shopping center next to a car garage and across the street from a carwash. The inside of the studio had a nice setup. Parking is horrible! Maybe only five or six spots in front ot the building, you have to go somewhere else to park. As far as the classes, they offer choreo, popping, ball room, jazz, breakdancing, and hiphop. read more

We used so real for our custom wedding dance performance. This probably was one of the best investments we made for our wedding! We wanted a dance that was very unique and fun wasn't something that anyone had ever seen and so real with our instructor jheru was truly the best thing that we did prior to our wedding day. Let me preface this, I am NOT a dancer nor am I gifted with grace however our dance was amazing and the classes with Jheru were fun (albeit hard)! My fiance and I sent Jheru songs we loved and he listened and cropped a custom remix. He also gave lots of great advice for length of song and made sure we weren't getting too ambitious in our expectaions which was helpful since I did not have a dance background. The experience to make a custom dance was super collaborative and creative and it made me very appreciative of what goes into creating the viral wedding dances you see on youtube. I don't think the experience is for everyone for their wedding but it definitely is for those that are willing to put in the work, training and out of class practice for an unforgettable dance. Let me start by saying, I am not a good dancer at all. This was the first dance class that I had been to since I was a little girl, and I was so pleasantly surprised. I took class with Khalil, and the energy was amazing. It was such a positive environment where everyone was clapping for the other people in the class. Went for the twerk class that was being held last Saturday and so I am basing my review solely on this experience. So parking was easy. There was a lot of spaces available. The class I went to there was a lot of people registered for so he class that I went to I had to stand in line for over thirty minutes before being given my admission bracelet. So from there there is a lie. To use the bathroom. I had to wait another 15 minutes because it is just one bathroom. And one unisex bathroom at that. It was very hot on the dance floor and rather crowded. Don't know if this was just because of the event or this is the norm. read more

I visited Soreal for the first time this past weekend and fell in love! This is my first time dancing with choreography and I was instantly hooked. I had classes with Eric, Christine and Khalil and enjoyed them all. Music and dance moves were new and relevant. I plan on signing up for the monthly unlimited membership soon! read more

This place is amazing. My son goes here. He started when he was five and we've been hooked since. He's making seven in a few months. They are really chill and laid back. They kept the studio open during the renovations which was nice. And the end result is Beautiful!!! They offer lots of classes ranging in Times and levels so there's no excuse to not make it. My son does a beginners on Monday and because he and we love Eric so much, he takes his class on Saturday as well. Oh yeah.... Eric is awesome!!!! There's been other replacements whenever Eric is out, they're all good, but Eric is our favorite. I highly recommend this place. I did lots of research and I liked that I could pay per class and not shell out $100's for classes I wouldn't be able to attend. For people who have their kids in one or two after school activities, the other schools may work. But having the freedom to go when it is convenient without losing money AND my child is learning in a fun way, makes it all worth it!!! read more

The class choreography was great, but new students had no clue who their instructor was for the first 12-15 minutes. Improvement in the class welcome or just direction on where your classroom is will be helpful for any newcomers. Our (11a.m. Sat - "Beginner's 25 & Up") instructor set up his room, but never came back to retrieve students from the lounge. We all just sorta watched, & asked each other- "Is that our instructor? Where do we go?" We roamed in the room downstairs ourselves. Then, after watching him set up his music for about 10 minutes, he finally spoke. He was very pleasant after he finally addressed all of the students in the room, though. The transition in between was just sort of an odd 15 minutes. read more

Even though it was a 10hr roundtrip drive, the adult 3hr INTENSIVE Hip Hop workshop was definitely worth the no sleep! We "Giovanni & I" loved all the collab choreographers, staff & attendees which made last night H-Town experience a WIN-WIN! read more

Love the place. Came here to take a hip hop lesson for a bachelorette party and had a blast. The staff are so friendly, and the environment is clean. Eric taught and walked us through a song, giving us the full 1 hour 30 minute session even when we were late. Very passionate, patient and excellent in what he does! Took my daughter & my niece to the youth hip hop class. The instructor didn't have any choreography prepared for the class & went rouge on the dance moves, which really confused the kids. He kept adding in new & taking out moves on the spot. My kids were confused, disengaged & bored. At first, I thought they weren't genuinely interested in the dance class but after talking to them, they said they didn't like the instructor because he was very confusing. This will be our first & last time there, I felt really bad for the kids because they didn't enjoy their time. read more

Came to Houston for work and was looking for something fun to do for the weekend. Came across this studio online and decided to give it a try. Their staff was super nice and their instructors really knew how to teach. The studio itself is in a small strip mall, but the inside has a good setup. Overall, I wish they offered a bit more variety outside of just beginner, intermediate and advanced classes but I think anyone looking to learn and have a good time won't be disappointed when coming here. read more

I went here on yesterday as a favor to a friend. I must say that initially I did not want to partake in the class. I was apprehensive do to the younger crowd. After speaking with the manager and some of the choreographers I reluctantly took the class and it was amazing. I wish I would have known about this sooner upon visiting the area. Everyone I encountered was very nice including the instructors. I would definitely recommend this to someone who is looking to get in shape and have a great time doing it! read more
