One of the best places we went to. Amazing food, over the top customer service and attention to details and staff makes everyone welcomed and cozy, and I'm not exaggerating. Have enjoyed many good meals at Sorrel but tonight the oysters threw off the evening. One of our guests had one oyster that tasted off and after it had been swallowed, the shell was smelled and it appeared to have been rancid. A second oyster was also off. The waiter was informed and nothing was said or done. When the bill arrived again nothing was said or done. When mentioning it on our way out the hostess/manager said "you shouldn't have eaten it. we would have replaced it." Most people don't smell shells or taste the oyster before it goes down. Shame because to end an enjoyable evening with friends should not end feeling ill. read more

Sorrel Toronto is always one of my wishlist to try. It is busy all the time, and suggest book reservation at least few days ahead especially weekend. We sat down quickly and ordered shrimp cocktail to start, follow by Bouillabaisse and features of the night (Jumbo prawns risotto). To be honest, they are taste good, but the risotto is a bit smaller portion. The cocktail shrimp is a good size black tiger shrimp, but the cocktail sauce is not the best. It's a bustling, upscale but not stuffy restaurant specializing in French and seafood. We went on a summer Tuesday night (birthday) and both inside and outside was busy. The outside is set up like a Parisienne bistro with small tables and two chairs, each looking out to the sidewalk. Great for pretending you're in Paris, not so great for a proper dinner, as the table is too small. Like many restos these days, the noise levels inside are elevated when busy (and our server spoke quite softly). Mix of patrons, including regulars, locals, young and old, couples, friends and families. Food was great, but nothing that hit me as being "special". We had calamari and mussels for apps, tenderloin and salmon for mains, and chocolate torte and bread pudding for dessert. With two glasses of wine, it came out to $260 all in. The tenderloin was nicely cooked and for sure was bigger than the 6 oz portion that was ordered. (LOL we were so sure it was bigger that we checked the bill to make sure we weren't charged for more than 6 -- and we were not.) Everything else was good -- service was attentive and our table by the window was a nice spot for a summer evening meal. Would go back again, I'd like to try the bouillabaise. read more

A delightful dining experience with delicious food and amazing service. There is elegant decor both on the interior and exterior of the restaurant. You are greeted with a smile at the door and promptly asked for your coat. They were accommodating for my party of five and seated us at a round table in the middle of the restaurant. Our server was very attentive and knowledgeable, letting us know about the features of the day and recommending appetizers to start our experience. The wine list is thick as a novel and our waiter helped narrow down our selection. We chose a bottle of red that he suggested and a bottle of Prosecco. Neither choice disappointed and they paired well with our meal. We ordered the fried calamari, grilled marinated artichokes, and two-dozen oysters to start. The calamari was fried to perfection, the perfect crunch on the exterior and not too oily. The artichokes were delicious and grilled nicely, not overly charred or burnt. This was my first time having oysters, and I must say that they were an acquired taste. They were Atlantic oysters served with lemon wedges and horseradish. We asked for hot sauce as well and were given the jalapeño Tabasco sauce which complimented the oysters perfectly. I really enjoyed the appetizers but was excited for our main entrees! For our entrees, we ordered the ravioli, spaghetti pomodoro and two orders of the mushroom tagliatelle. I have a mushroom allergy so I am unable to attest to the taste of the tagliatelle but my guests enjoyed it. The spaghetti pomodoro was sauced beautifully and packed with tomato flavour. The noodles were prepared perfectly al dente. The lobster ravioli was the highlight for me. Each ravioli had a good chunk of lobster in it and the butter sauce complimented the flavours of the pasta perfectly. We finished our dining experience with an order of their bread pudding and vanilla bean crème brûlée. The bread pudding was warm and delicious, dare I say, the best bread pudding I've ever had. The crème brûlée was sweet and creamy. Crème brûlée is one of my favourite desserts and this one definitely satisfied my taste buds. Overall, the experience was amazing and the food was delicious. This place was on my places to try in the neighborhood for a while now. This stretch of restaurants have their work cut out for them as they are supported by the regular neighbors so you have to consistent service and decent food. This spot checked both of these requirements well. We had the following Zucchini Blossoms oh boy this starter was so good that I ordered an encore at the end of the meal. Lightly battered and fried with no greasy feel afterwards. Good filling of cheese and beautiful finish. Bravo. Beef Short Rib I tend to order this dish usually when I see it. This was OK nothing out of the ordinary. I enjoyed the potato gratin side. Chicken (Fried version) I didn't try this dish but went well. Their wine list is extensive and has some gems by the glass. I enjoyed a good California Red which is priced well for what it is. Service is very good. Kudos to a well trained and experienced staff. An important aspect that's quite overlooked in Toronto at this price point IMO. All these trendy spots take note here those instagram/TikTok stories will get you a visit or two but not repeat business which is their mainstay here. I will be back for a revisit soon. read more

Sorrel makes it to the list of top restaurants I've been to. The food was amazing and the service was impeccable. I came here on my birthday and loved it. It was the first time I've been out to a nice restaurant in a long time. We made reservations for 6:30 and were seated right away. We were given a seat by the window, which we loved. We were given the food menu and wine menu. The wine menu is pretty extensive and the waiter helped us with recommendations. We ended up getting oysters, ceviche, veal and seafood linguine. Each dish was so good. The oysters were fresh and decently sized. It came with the typical toppings like horse radish, lemon and vinaigrette. They weren't fishy at all. The ceviche was delicious! Could eat the whole plate to myself. The veal was so tender - the most tender veal I've ever had. Not dry in the least bit, and the sauce was soooo good. It also comes with some pasta. The seafood linguine was also good with a good amount of seafood in it and the pasta being cooked perfectly. We were so full after the food, but there's always room for dessert! So we ordered the tiramisu to share, and it did not disappoint. Definitely hit the spot. The service was some of the best we've experienced. Our water and wine glasses were never empty or close to empty. Our dishes were taken away almost as soon as we finished them. We had our picture taken with no complaints and it turned out well. I rarely give any restaurant 5 stars, but our experience tonight was exceptional. The only reservation available for our party of 5 was at 5:45pm. This didn't bode well. However, we were seated promptly in a lovely round central table and remarkably the place began to fill up almost immediately. The service was impeccable throughout...more staff than a place twice the size. Most importantly the food was plentiful and delicious, as were the desserts. An exceptionally poor experience. I ordered the scallops. One was off. Even my dining companion could smell the ammonia aroma from across the table. Not a big deal. It happens. You get one bad scallop in a bunch. It's the reaction to me sending it back which was appalling. The waiter came back and told me "the chef says they are fine". He did offer me an alternative, which I selected, but from that moment onwards we were persona non grata. The waiter seemed positively hostile. They couldn't wait to get rid of us. All they had to do was say "sorry about that, occasionally it happens" but no. I did leave a usual tip of 20%, I guess because I was trying to prove I wasn't going to be petty but I left feeling pretty aggrieved. BTW my companions pasta was overcooked and there was insufficient sauce. If you're not a local, my advice is don't go. They are only interested in local clientele. read more

(4.5) We visited Sorrel over the past weekend for their dinner service. Stepping into the restaurant was like a walkway into a European Trattoria; the room was filled with loud conversations, servers dancing through the aisles gripping onto plates of food, and an unmistakable aroma of freshly cooked seafood. Our first course arrived with Grilled Marinated Artichokes and a Baby Gem Lettuce salad. The artichokes were spot on - it had grill marks covering the cut side that gave it a smoky flavor; mixed with the brine of the flower it was addicting. The second course came around with the Steak Tartare and Grilled Calamari; both dishes were stunning and prepared with purpose. The tartare was cool and balanced enough that the ingredients didn't overpower the true star... the beef. The Calamari was surpassingly tender and not chewy, and was cooked well enough that the true flavor of the squid was on full display. Our last course had Lobster Ravioli and Chilean Sea Bass - the ravioli was spot on with all the elements on the dish pairing well together; the pasta was al dente and the lobster was sweet. The sea bass was cooked and seasoned perfectly and had a nice sear on top. It came on top of sorrel beurre blanc, but I felt as though something was missing there. All in all we had a delicious meal and the service was excellent. My favorite dishes were the Ravioli and the Grilled Marinated Artichokes. Looking forward to returning very soon. read more

Always passes by this restaurant but never had the chance to step in. Interior definitely has a cozy feel to it. What drew me here was the dollar oysters and it was great. Braised Short Ribs were quite good but the accompanying potato gratin was dry and if it weren't for the layers of cheese on top, I wouldn't have eaten much of it. Tomatoes with crispy capers were completely hard and green in the middle. Why oh why do restaurants like this long-standing place serve high priced bad tomatoes?!? Sea bass was flaky and melting in mouth and its combination with artichokes and butter sauce had delicious and contrasting flavours. My favorite restaurant in Toronto may have moved locations, but they took as good of care of me in this new location as they used to when they were on Yorkville. We had reservations for a busy Friday night at 9pm. This place was hopping so it took a little while to clear our table which was no problem as they were quick to buy my group a drink and squeeze us into a little space at the bar. We finally did get a table for 5 in the middle of the dining room and our server was over in a flash to fill us in the that day's specials as well as to take our appetizer order. I wish I could remember his name as he was really terrific and I know given we were his last table of the night, he had to be tired but you would never have known it. He steered us toward the ceviche, octopus and steak tartar as well as the oysters of the day. All were delicious and came out timed perfectly. For our entrees, we had a range of items from the steak of the day to my "fried chicken" which the server had suggested and was a warm honey goodness that still has be licking my lips about. And then for dessert, the bread pudding was my favorite although the group liked the chocolate torte as well. Prices for drinks and dinner ran about $100 a person which was totally reasonable for the quality and quantity of the food served. I was thrilled my friends liked this place as much as I do as that is always a risk when you are the one suggesting a place. Always at the top of my list to visit when I head to Toronto, Sorrel holds a special place in my heart. You don't find many places that do things so right with consistency. Check it out! read more

This place treated us awful! We had a reservation for 9pm and they were full, so we had a drink outside at an empty patio. I asked for bread and it didn't come til I asked a third time. We finally got seated inside and the food was amazing, but st the end of the night I asked the owner for our first drinks to be chomped and he refused. This restaurant consistently produces very high quality food, service, and wine. I'm sure that the fact that the owner is invariably on the premises helps, and that the staff are long-time employees. Hence it's invariable popularity. We had two outstanding 2015 Burgundies from the wine list, one white and one red at roughly $100 apiece. Our waiter, as always, was well informed, helpful, and skilled in their profession. We had the artichoke starter, which has been on the menu for quite a while and is well worth trying. The artichokes were soft, tasty and the dish was good to share. The lobster ravioli, something that one would not normally choose from a menu, was simply outstanding: Clearly identifiable delicate pieces of lobster packed in big shells of pasta. The salad of tomato and beets was fine. Our red snapper was excellent and was plenty to share. We always have frites here, because they are so good. read more

Normally an excellent experience but this evening I had my worst restaurant experience ever and the restaurant staff made it worse. At the end of an enjoyable meal, when I was given the cheque I noticed an error with the cocktails. There was a charge for a drink we did not order. At the same time there was one mIssed drink. The problem was the drink we did not order was more expensive and I simply asked for the bill to be corrected. The waiter brought this to the attention of the bartender who came over and explained in rather short terms that the drinks we had prior to the meal were all the same price as this particular drink. He then left. I had to ask the waiter once again to speak to the the bartender and ask for the bill to be corrected. The drink we did not have was more expensive. The waiter returned with the bill and explained it had been corrected but had been asked how many servings of bread we had and that in future if we have more than 2 orders of bread that we would need to lay $4... which was what we had been over charged. Simply put, this translates to... you should be thankful we gave you free bread. I was so shocked. I had been going to this restaurant for many years, sometimes 2-3 times per week. Many times I had more than 2 orders of bread without realizing I had apparently been taking advantage of the restaurant. Perhaps it was because I was a loyal customer. I am disappointed that I didn't have my wits about me to not give my usual 20% tip. I was in disbelief at the feeling of being scolded like a school child who took an extra cookie at lunch. Overall, I expect a restaurant to correct an erroneous bill and not have the staff fight amongst themselves selves over who made an error... this is what appeared to be happening. In a few limited experiences when I i have had a mistake on a bill, a restaurent has been respectful, apologized, and even offered simply to discount the erroneous item without adding back the original item. This is absolutely not necessary but demonstrates a commitment to service. This ruined my evening. It was embarrassing in front of friends. very disappointed in this restaurant. Shared different salads that were pretty bland. Pasta (mushroom) was soggy. Also, took just under 1.5 hours to get the food. We asked the waiter politely if food was coming soon and he rudely said "you haven't been waiting long". Asked for salt and extra bread while we were waiting but they never came by. We were pretty iffy about trying out Sorrel. As longtime fans of Pastis, its predecessor in the space, we were suspicious of the newcomer. What a pleasant surprise Sorrel turned out to be! One of the few places that you can find wild Pacific salmon, and it comes cooked to perfection with a tasty corn relish. The braised short ribs do not disappoint, nor does the tagliatelle with truffles and parmigiano or the buttermilk fried chicken. There's something on the menu for everyone (including picky tweens), and both the room and the service are polished and pleasant. We have returned many times with different groups and everyone has enjoyed the experience. We hope to continue to come back. read more

Food was ok. The service is great and the atmosphere is cozy, but to be honest, the food was mediocre. For appetizers, we ordered the fried calamari, oysters and sald. The oysters were perfect but for a "French" restaurant, you would expect a shallot mignonette to accompany the dish. The calamari is something that you would find in a pub. We ordered the fish, scallops and steak/frites. The scallops were over salted but the fish tasty. The frites were awful and the steak under seasoned. As one would expect from a Rosedale eatery... everything is impeccable: great location, excellent service, the menu (surprisingly rich for a relatively small place!) fully representative for "Mediterranean", with dishes specific for each category (pasta, fish, meat...). We go there regularly (every 2-3 weeks), usually with a couple of friends and were never disappointed. While not opulent, the prices reflect the quality. Convenient parking is available right across the road (at the BeerStore). Slight drawback: since the (many) tables are rather close to each other, sometimes (depending on the mood and voices of the patrons around) the noise level tends to slide above average. Well... quite OK for a convivial atmosphere, but not exactly ideal for a romantic tête-à-tête dinner! But don't miss the $1 oysters starting @ 4:00 PM... a real deal! read more

A fantastic meal, and I am very, very picky This was the best meal I have had this year in a restaurant. I often find that a great yardstick for a chef is how well they cook fish. I took the Chilean Sea Bass and my wife had the Diver Scallops. Often we are apprehensive of ordering these types of dishes, as so many restaurants cook them to death, but not Sorrel. The CSB came out very hot and perfectly cooked, with a fantastic sorrel beurre blanc sauce on the side which complemented the fish. The scallops were perfectly cooked to a medium rare non-rubbery consistency. We had the $1 oysters as a starter and they were great. For drinks, we took the Malivoire Chardonnay which was priced OK for this sort of establishment. Our server, originally from France was gracious and very efficient. The only mild disappointment was the creme brulee dessert which was a touch grainy and did not quite have that perfect creaminess one hopes for. My only concern about this review is that it will make it harder for me to get a reservation in the future. I will definitely return here often! read more

This is one of Toronto's restaurant bargains: everyday oysters at $1 per. We do 18 Malpeques with two glasses of wine and a shared chocolate torte, sit at the bar, and luxuriate inexpensively. When we want a full dinner, Sorrel is also excellent, if noisy. read more

After quite positive past experiences, we returned to find it a pretentious, super expensive, most unpleasant place! Unless you are one of their "Rosedale regulars" don't expect a courteous, respectful treatment. I made my (birthday) reservation 3 weeks in advance, clearly requesting a CLOSE TO WINDOW table for two, THAT WAS PROMISED TO ME. Upon arrival we were lead to the absolutely worst table on the floor, in a back, dark corner, while there were still not one, not two, but three 2-seat tables close to the window available. At my protestations the maitre d' (or owner?) rudely dismissed me, pretending that those tables were reserved for parties of 4. According to elementary math 3 tables of 2 persons each would seat at least 6, right? The arrogance was obvious and hurtful. We (with my wife of 38 years) stood up and left the establishment. It may be a Rosedale location, but don't expect the slightest touch of elegance or class! read more
