I called SOS Locksmith late one night when I was locked out. The guy who answered the phone gave me a quote. I thought I could call around and find the service cheaper. Anyway, another locksmith showed up who quoted way less. When he got there he was going to charge me an insane amount. Awful customer service, dishonest and expensive. I left a deposit to order a new lock for my apt door. Guy promised to call me the following day with the final cost. He never called. I stopped in the following day, but he wasn't there. I called a number of times but he never returned a single phone call. I emailed him and asked about the pricing, timing and metal finish. After one week he got back to me over email and said it will cost more than $200 his initial estimate and said it will take two weeks. I told him not to order the lock and instead refund my deposit. He refused and told me never to come into his store again. Stay away from SOS locksmith!!! read more

AN HONEST LOCKSMITH! I was having trouble with my MultiLock- I couldn't get the key in (although I was not locked out). I first contacted the locksmith that opearates out of a nearby hardware/paint store. He said he had to take the lock apart, in addition to charging a service charge for coming. The next day, I contacted SOS. The guy came in 40 minutes, banged the key into the lock, which is now wprking perfectly. My only charge was the service charge that amounted to $38.10 with tax- It could have ended up costing me about $200 if he wasn't honest- I would never have known-- SOS IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED- But check the phone number- it's incorrect in this listing. read more

I have had many keys made here over the years for the four buildings I service in Chelsea and Long Island City as a Facilities Manager. Had two extra keys made for a building I don't get to regularly in LIC. Finally went to try the Medeco M3 keys and they don't work. Took them back to the store after one month and was told I should have checked them immediately and they can't help me. They're stamped from your store - were very clearly made at your store. They should have been re-cut with no questions asked. Very poor service - you've completely lost my business. read more

SOS is a small, unassuming shop, but don't let that fool you. "SOS" couldn't be a more perfect name! I was having trouble with a guitar I had, or specifically, it's case. It got locked on a flight over to NY, and I didn't have a key to unlock it! Once the people at the "huge guitar shop chain I won't name" couldn't help me, I had to go to some local locksmiths. I tried one nearby to no avail, then found SOS. The owner was really friendly and nice, and multitasked helping me and other customers coming in. He also told me some music-related stories, one in particular where he helped unlock cases for the Dave Matthews Band only a few hours before they had a performance. I almost never write Yelp reviews but i promised I would do it this time for everyone's benefit, due to the shocking nature of what I experienced with SOS Locksmith. I locked myself out of my apartment one night and thought about going to sleep at a friend's apartment until my roommate returned from an overseas trip the next night, but I had to be up extremely early for a work call the following morning and didnt want to inconvenience any of my friends with that. So I bit the bullet and called these guys to help me open the door. They quoted me a $45 service call and a range of $85-110 to open my door for me. It was already breaking the bank for me but I agreed to it. The locksmith arrived and after looking at the door quoted me the highest end of the range ($110). I was surprised that I would be on the highest possible end of the range, because I had a pretty simple old door with only one lock. But I took a deep breath and told him to proceed. When the locksmith finally opened my door, he turned to me and said... "Do you want me to replace your cylinder so you can lock the door from the outside?" And I was like "Well, that sounds like something pretty necessary..." And that's when it got ugly. The locksmith proceeded to tell me: "Well that's going to be another $195." I was completely speechless. How could a locksmith come over and open my door for $155, and then turn around after the service is complete and tell me I have to either sleep with a door that has a big hole in it and doesnt lock from the outside, or pay him more than double the price of the entire service to essentially complete the job he started. I called the company and requested that they do the right thing and install the cylinder for free since they had led me to believe the complete service cost $155 until they completed half of it and left me with no choice but to finish it. After several back and forths, they proceeded to lower the additional fee down gradually to $55 extra for the cylinder. But they refused to budge any lower. So I finally paid them the $55 and vowed to write a review so everyone would know that this is a dishonest business that misleads their clients about the total cost involved in a job to get them to bite, and then squeezes them for every last penny only after they've left you even more desperate than you were before. For me its not even about the price of the service...I know a lot of other locksmiths charge similarly crazy rates. Its the blatant dishonesty and bait and switch tactic that really put me over the edge. Hopefully you're never stuck in a situation where you need this kind of a service to start with, but if you ever are, steer clear of these guys and go with someone you can trust to be honest with you about the cost of their services up front. read more

Guy and his team have done a great job of helping us at our building in Brooklyn. We had a break in a few months ago, and I wish we had known about these guys the night of the break in. Either way a neighbor referred them and we decided to let them take care of our whole building's needs. They added 8 vestibule locks and latches, changed and rekeyed our whole internal building common space locks. Additionally everyone had Multi-lock installed in their condo with new top locks along with a rekey of our front door to the building with a new MT5 lock. Donovan was the tech who did the work, and his professionalism and attention to detail on some of the trickier elements was very much appreciated. They also installed some door closers and referred us to someone to get us security film on some of our external glass surfaces to prevent window breakage. SOS is a great company, and if they can't do some portions of the work, they will refer a reliable person or company to do a great job. DO NOT USE THEM.!!! . This place screwed up the job for my building's front door. They first submit a very low cost quote. Then when the locksmith crew were not professional during installation and gave such an attitude and complained the whole time. Stay clear.. this is a very unprofessional company! Much like the other reviews before me, their service is overpriced and their technicians are dishonest. I called this company on a normal weekend after locking myself out of the apartment. On the phone, they stated it'll be a $45 charge to come out and $95-$125 to open the door depending on the difficulty of the service. I grind my teeth at the pricing, but it is what it is... Some time later the technician shows up. With no greeting or introduction he says "You understand the pricing? $45 for me to get here and $125 to open the lock." I responded "No, you said $95-$125 depending on the difficulty of opening the lock" "OK, $95-$125" One minute later, he opens door by shimming the lock. "Your total is $186." I was taken aback. When I asked him why it was the $125 charge instead of the $95 charge, he looked at me in disgust as he said exclaimed offensively "LOOK I SAVED YOU MONEY BY NOT DRILLING OUT THE LOCK! WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?!" (I asked him this question just ONCE by the way). At this point, I was dumbfounded. It was a simple question that could've been easily answered. Anyways.. I know I couldn't reason with the guy so I just decided to pay for the charge.. but the nightmare with this easily enraged technician did not end there.. He asked for my phone number for his records. Not a problem. I said it once.. I repeated another time.. third times the charm? He kept asking for me to repeat the number. I slowed down and enunciated the numbers one digit at a time. "I DON'T like your attitude!" he exclaims. This is when I lost it... after a few heated words, he was on his way. I did not care that the service was $186. If the technician was upfront about the costs instead of swindling people with a lower price range, I wouldn't have a problem with it. In addition, this particular person had zero social skills. You don't have to be the most friendly person, but you can definitely treat me as a human being. Lastly, they did not even check for ID. read more

Nice People but completely INCOMPETENT. STAY AWAY. TL, DR: they can't even make a copy of a regular key work, do you trust them with your lock/door/more complicated keys? Please do not place your safety and money at risk. I went in today to make a copy of my mailbox key. A very simple task. In fact, I made a copy the day before in Brooklyn for $1.25 at a hardware store and it works just fine. SOS asked for $3.21. This is Manhattan, rent is higher, whatever. I did not complain, happily paid and went on my way. Guess what? The key does not work. It won't even fit in the hole. So I walked back to the store and they apologize. Polish the key and knock it a bit. Told me everything should be fine now. I walked all the way back to my apartment. Still didn't work. I walked back to the store again. They are nice and polite, keep apologizing. Fixed it a bit more and gave the key to me. Guess what? STILL DIDN'T WORK. I walked back to the store again and was furious. I wasted more than half hour walking back and forth under the brutal sun because this so called locksmith place can't even make a proper copy of a simple key. They apologized, tried to fix it again, and told me they would do anything but just "no refund". I went back to my apartment again and it still didn't work. In short, they are nice and polite. But completely incompetent. I had to walk back and forth from my apartment to the store 3 times because they can't even make a copy of a most simple key. In the end, the key still didn't work I just gave up on making a copy at all. I do not know how this place stay in business. read more

Great locksmith place! Decent price range, good service nice but not over friendly and really efficient. 24 hours and although small it's great. Not too hard to find and it's walkable from the 1 train and sine bus stops. Further down but still walking distance from the orange lines or the PATH. The same key that I made a copy at Home Depot didn't work (made 3, one which is the more complicated one compared to the two others didn't work, the rest did.) so I found this one and thankfully the cutting was good it worked. I do recommend this one, save you from if they work wasn't done properly and going to find another place and wasting money and time. Just go to this place, it's good. read more
