Soul Spa is not for me. No ma'am. I knew that it wasn't going to be, but it was the evening of Mother's Day, it was super last minute, it was nearby, and I was desperate due to feeling extra CRUNCHY. When I called and they gave me the green light to head over, I did. There was little by way of greeting or direction due to the language barrier. There was what appeared to be a used hot towel left on a stand in the room, so not a great first impression at all. And the sheets felt...moist. There was an overall humidity in the environment that felt off putting. The massage itself was that of a human massage chair. Just mindless kneading with no regard for where the knots were. If I had to fake being a massage therapist, I might have been able to do a better job. When she asked if the pressure was okay, I asked for deeper. She acknowledged me, but no adjustments were ever made. And I really can't stand any type of massage that concludes with wake up slaps and/or a variation of karate chops. I really can't. At some point in the massage, the door was left open. I don't know if it's part of a sketchy policy, but someone else mentioned it in their review too. Soul Spa was a one and done for me. Service was excellent! I will however deduct a star for the following: I did not especially care for their "Tip Chart". Their tip category calculations were very inaccurate and somewhat tacky. I felt embarrassed/ uncomfortable to only tip 20% while the therapist who did my massage stood there and watched so I upped it to 25% which only landed in the very "good" category not "great". I'll start with the good. Place was clean and the 30min back massage for $40 was a 4 star. Now the bad. My massage therapist asked if I would like to add another 30min, for the whole hr. I agreed, but she charged me an extra $20 when an hr is supposed to $55. Then she left the door open and proceeded to continue massaging my back for another 10min. I could not relaxe with people walking by, door open, no curtain. She then has me turn over and proceeded to massage my face and scalp for 5min, shoulders and arms for 5min. Then says time Is up. Back massage good, but a very poor setup. I left feeling disappointed that I was unable to relaxe or get the full body massage that I paid for. A pet peeve of mine at Asian spas is when they massage way too long with the blanket (feels like atleast half the session usually) and I can not wait until they start using oil. Came on Friday afternoon without an appointment. Happy they were able to take me. Clean place. Very polite. Lily was FANTASTIC! She listened to my complaints and then let her fingers to the walking for 75 minutes. I asked for deep tissue and she certainly obliged. One of the best massages I've had in a while. I've had back and neck fusion surgeries and she knew how to work around all the hardware. I don't live in the area, but I would certainly consider driving out occasionally just to get a massage here. I've had a chronic back issue for right around ten years and J Spa massage therapy has helped me tremendously. I called ahead and they were able to get me in within 20 minutes of me calling. I got the 90 minute massage which consisted of 60 full body and 30 minute foot massage. I used to go here when it was J Spa and I loved Sunny. But I am really pleasantly surprised with Sophia. She really knows what she's doing. And I've had a lot of massages in my lifetime. You can tell her where you're hurting and she gets in there and relieves your pain. They take the full hour and I feel great afterwards. I have referred many friends here because we love it so much. Sure, it's not fancy, there's no sauna, showers, steam room or relaxation room but for the price I can come here 2-3x. A month vs paying $150 at Burke Williams. Wow. You won't believe this. Having two little one of my few chances to get a break, I get an hour massage once every few weeks. Having been to this spot a few years ago, I remember that it was an above average, good quality massage so I went in this time expecting good things! Never mind the strange cultural nuances that I was greeted with (the masseuse's hands smelling like stinky Asian fruit and once confirming I could speak Mandarin, asking me why I looked so tired in Mandarin), I was okay with all this. Stinky fruit? Reminds me of my mom and dads house! No worries! Inappropriate comments in Chinese? I feel right at home. I was ready to put this all past me given I knew this was a no frills inexpensive massage. But the massage itself was God awful. . After a few polite pointers of what I generally like, she proceeded to slip gobs and gobs of oil on me, to the point that awkward slopping sounds were being made. I felt uncomfortable at the noise of it. Then, when reminding her that one of my early pointers was that she need only focus on the gluts on up, as she started to massage my legs, she responded with 'don't worry- I know what I'm doing- it feels good right?' The answer was a resounding NO! I've had better massages from the massage chairs at nails salons. She had very jerky and choppy movements and she used her nails! I could feel her nails! . I felt bad and by this point and was debating whether or not to leave. It was becoming a stressful experience, not enjoying the massage, and feeling awkward both physically and emotionally. I built up the courage to politely tell her I wanted to end the massage early and just get up. I fully intended on still paying the full rate plus a modest tip. I had never done this before, but I wasn't enjoying it and in fact, it was turning into a negative experience. She responded regretfully and pressed me urgently to please continue on with the massage, and asked for more pointers. I felt badly, thinking of the lady, who probably needed the money. So I decided to let her continue and just told her that I liked the movements slower (my euphemism for less jerky). She tried for a bit but then it just devolved back to the same choppy, naily movements. I'm so sad. So this is when it got rich. The massage finally came to an end. My masseuse checked me out instead of the lady who greeted me. I told her to add a 10% tip. (My standard place up in LA, I usually give a 30% tip. Shout out to Massage Place Encino and Tarzana! ). She then had the gall to get wide eyed and state that a 20% tip was the minimum. She only backed down when I asked to speak to the manager. Such a bad experience. I'm so sad about it. I had to be the one to initiate the "hello, welcome " greet, because she didn't even bother acknowledging us. It's on the second floor above Togo's, in the In and Out plaza. We made reservations because we called the night before and they couldn't accommodate us. With reservations, they greeted us at door and took us right in. First, we sat in a room with big leather recliners to get our foot massages. Then they take you into a room where you get your massage on a massage bed. Now from the moving from one place to another, I feel they jip you on the full timing of the massages. However, the massages were pretty good. I'm used to all the foot massage places in all the asian areas and J Spa definitely has tried to deferentiate themselves from the rest. However, they need to learn some manners. If the massage is $50 and you get tipped $10 then you got a 20% tip. It's very rude and unprofessional to ask for more. Which in this case they did. They even gave me a lecture (probably thought I was really young) about giving $20 tip in the future. I wanted to give them a lecture about the definition of tip and what that means. For that, they dropped a star in their rating. I wouldn't come back. This place probably is more attractive to non-Asians because to them, it's cheap. However, if you yelped a few more places in Garden Grove and Westminister, you can have the same quality for much cheaper.. cheaper like $20! read more
