During the winter holidays I decided to give Class Pass a try and found myself checking out Soul Cycle Clarendon as one of my first classes. Hands down it was one of my favorite studios in the area and I had a BLAST! I have done cycling classes in the past, so I was fairly certain what to expect when I arrived. Although I came a bit early to try and get set up, that wasn't necessary since the classes on Sunday run back to back and the lobby can be pretty chaotic. Outside of checking in and grabbing my shoe rental, there was no way to access the studio early. About 5 minutes before classes started they opened the studio to everyone and had ambassadors everywhere to help people find and set up their bikes. I was clipped in and ready to ride in less than a minute. Class itself was SO FUN!! I fully understand the hype now. The energy, the music, the choreography is all A+. Shoutout to Sasha for delivering an amazing riding experience with an awesome playlist! It was clear she was a well enjoyed instructor as the class was at FULL capacity and everyone responded very well to her energy and instructions. Although I didn't stick around to talk to any of the staff or other members, it still felt like a very welcoming community that you can easily find your place in if you try. I highly recommend checking out Soul Cycle and look forward to coming back. Just be sure to get your parking validated before you leave because I indeed had to walk all the way back after reaching my car and realizing I forgot!

SoulCycle, welcome to Virginia! This location is conveniently in the Clarendon Market Common, across from Whole Foods and in the same shopping center as Crate & Barrel, The Container Store, Pottery Barn, and Lululemon. There is metered parking, garage parking, and is a short walk from the metro. The workout itself is a 45 minute sweaty, full-body workout. The instructors are motivating and riding with you most of the time! There are theme rides as well. FYI, if you're arriving 4 minutes before class, you can call the front desk so they will reserve your bike for you (otherwise, it gets released). Gender neutral bathrooms are fully stocked with all of the products (dry shampoo, lotion, hair ties, tampons, etc.) and there are some lockers with electronic charging capabilities as well. Classes are pricey ($30 for a single class and there's a small discount when you purchase a package) and shoe rentals are only complimentary for your first time. Thankfully, I have my own spin shoes (delta clips are highly recommended!) so I don't worry about the rental fee. Overall, SoulCycle is a great studio to try if you'd like to get into spinning and need the extra motivation. All of their equipment is top of the line and the customer service is fantastic! There's staff inside the studio who are there to assist you with adjusting your bike and making sure you're comfortable.

The front desk people could be nicer. The instructors were okay. The seats are hard so you will do a lot of standing.

Today, I had the unfortunate experience of having to speak to Sarina (or Sabina - couldn't really hear), Victor, and, finally, Ranya (I think there are two here so not sure which one this is) about an issue they refused to resolve. I only like CS4 with certain instructors. At the last minute, they added a sub to the CS4 schedule. I didn't want take class with that sub. They're better for other formats. So, I call to ask to be removed from the class. Apparently, it's a problem. Long story, short: they wouldn't remove me because they still offer the class and I called within the 12 hours. But y'all changed the schedule with less than 12 hours of notice? Like... I continue to be floored by the behaviors and actions of the managers/supervisors here. They're so inconsistent. There was a tornado warning and inclement weather earlier this year and they were like, "well, we're open so if you cancel within 12 hours, you'll be charged." Sighhhh Also, showers haven't been as clean lately and routinely smell like urine.

As somebody who works out 5-6 times a week, this class wasn't too difficult or challenging for me. Not too difficult for me because: First, A few of us would've liked to see the 45-minute session extended to a hour long session, since 45 minutes doesn't seem like enough time to really get going. Second, The bikes do not have a resistance gear, so it's different from your spinning class bicycles. I wonder what it'd be like with added resistance not just water resistance. Here's what the session looked like: a few minutes of bike adjusting, then the instructor (Jackie) showed us three positions that we would find ourselves in throughout the class- 1st position: seated; 2nd position: butt off the seat, leaning over the handlebars; 3rd position: standing up on the pedals. We did a few "hills" where she told us to pedal faster and then cool down. We changed positions in several sets. There were a few upper arm exercises thrown in where we pushed our arms through the water and pulled them back. We also did arm circles while seated on the bikes. A third upper body exercise we did was when we had to do push ups (one hand on the seat, and another on the handlebar). That specific exercise was a killer for me. Other exercises we did besides cycling was where our butts were off the seat and then we did squats on the pedals. Other things to note: Our class was at the Liaison hotel pool, which does not provide shower facilities, just three bathroom stalls for women. I bought my water shoes off amazon for $13, which worked really well. Splash Cycle does provide water shoes, and one friend did borrow them after realizing her Keen sandals didn't fit in under the pedal straps. To conclude: a bit expensive and not challenging enough to make this a regular part of my fitness routine, but a fun way for friends to spend time together and go out for brunch afterward.

Somebody sent me an invitation on Facebook to a Splash Cycle event, and boy did a bunch of us have…read morea good giggle about the possibilities on my page. Several people, however, mentioned they had done Aqua Spin before so in the vein of trying new things that are good for me, I convinced a friend to book and off we went. My first class was at 9:30 on a Sunday, and taught by Rachel, this excited little ball of energy. She was excellent about instructions and helping class members adjust their bikes and get their feet into the stirrups on the pedals. The water was a bit chilly when you dipped a toe in but upon getting all the way, it was comfortable. Her playlist was okay for this class but considering it was my first time I was totally okay with it. (I attended another class this morning that was All-Beyonce-Everything, with different moves and it was LIKE THAT! Water was also warmer today! Woot!) It's hard to know what to expect at a class of this nature. Go with an open mind. If you are driving please arrive well in advance of class start time as waitlist students may receive your seat if you're not there 15 minutes before. Class is at the Embassy Row hotel, which is valet only and $45 for two hours. They're walkable from the Dupont Metro, or you may prefer to Uber. Street parking is catch-as-catch-can and I can't believe I've gotten lucky twice, but then again I did arrive an hour before class start time. Things I love about this class: The seat doesn't beat your girlie bits to smithereens. The instructor doesn't move about the class cranking down your resistance -- there's actually no resistance to crank). The mood is cool and the other people are generally awesome. You're not left with post-workout malaise and limping around after the stiffness sets in. It's a great low-impact way to move your body in ways you often can't on land. Things I don't love - the bikes are wobbly because their bottom is flat but the pool is not. There's also the parking sitch, and while they recommend that you bring dry clothes to go home in I'm not sure where there's access to change into same unless you're just not very modest. Side note: We "met" the owner, Sara today who is this gorgeous woman who looks like she spends her life teaching fitness classes. :) Anyway, I've been twice and I'm sure I'll be back before the "season" is over.

I loved the theme of the class I took and the energy from the Soul Cycle crew and the instructor was lively and welcoming! My shoes, with Delta clips, fit their bikes and the bikes were easy enough to set up. Plus, the crew (and my bike neighbors) provided assistance. No matter what shape you are in, who you will be entrusting your body to is very important. I can say with full confidence that every single one of the what? three bad reviews? Of Sweatbox  should be cast aside because they are irrelevant since none of them talk about the actual sweat method and what it does to your body. Firstly, if you are worried if fat shaming/ageism exists here. The answer is a firm NO. I am older, I am overweight , and I was  welcomed with open arms, made a part of the family immediately, and that has not changed since the first class. I went to one OrangeTheory location a year or so back and was full on fat-and-age shamed and that made my self esteem spiral down into dark abyss for a very long time. Because words hurt, because I am already so vulnerable and frightened to cross the threshold of the gym, I need support, not otherwise. SweatBox is all welcoming, all inclusive type of place. Yes, they are located inside an exact copy of the Globo Gym from Dodgeball, (I got jokes) but just walk to the back of the first floor, to the Sweatbox counter, as far as I understand, gym and them are two separate entities. I purchased a 7-day, $34.00 unlimited trial pass online, came 30 minutes early for the instruction session (important to come early, instructors won't say no to you if you show up 5 minutes prior to class, but ultimately you are shorthanding yourself on the instruction part - don't you want to know as much as you can about bike set up, and components of training? And remember that instructors have other student s  to take care of prior to class) I began my training on Tuesday, September 3rd, 2019 and I made sure to come every day, dragging my self in sometimes, even if my body screamed to go get nachos instead. The instructors I've experienced during the trial week were: Alexx G Shawn M Kevin D Ashley D I loved all the instructors, Alexx is all tough love, just as described in his bio, but I love his light show and music choices. Kevin has an amazing aura and energy and makes you feel included. Then comes Ashley, wow. I don't know if she somehow hypnotizes the class, but you get in the zone, stop thinking of outside world, and all you focus on is her voice, her example poses, and her corrections, nothing else. At the end of the class, when you finally come to, you realize that you worked out for a full hour and  never looked at the clock once! Shawn is a rare soul. I have my collection of special, big hearted people, the list is short, but Shawn is on it. First of all the energy during his classes is through the roof, he is so charismatic, you WANT to do good to show him your appreciation. But my experience with him is also more personal. When I felt embarrassed, questioned myself, felt weak, cried like a baby after second class, Shawn in the gentlest of ways supported me, was there for me, helped me get past those hurdles and I cannot be more thankful. He always has words of encouragement, listens with attention, he is present. What an amazing human being. To sum up - 15 lbs. down (results will vary of course) and I signed up for an unlimited monthly. They got me good.

Combined with the music and the trainer giving you encouragement, spinning can be a really good cardio workout. It almost feels competitive with all the numbers and colors on the TV screens too. However, I don't understand the hype with $20-40 spin classes when I can do the same workout at the gym and push myself just as hard. I suppose it's worth it if you need that extra push, but I can't really afford $20-40 per class when i can get a membership at the gym for $30 a month. This was more of a hybrid spin/core class that utilizes TRX trainers, so there's that. And they do provide you with a heart rate monitor strap that gauges how hard you're working and calculate what intensity you should be at based on your endurance. The class itself was a 1:1 that introduced everyone to how a real class would go. We learned the basic movements on the TRX trainers and then were taught how to use the bikes. But it felt really rushed. The trainer was speaking so fast, I couldn't even really understand half of what he was saying. All in all, i got a good workout in though and I enjoyed the cold scented towel at the end.

If you're looking to switch up your routine or try something different, it definitely checks that box. That said, a few things didn't quite land for me. The space is very small and boutique, which is cozy in one sense, but also felt a bit cramped once the class started. I've been Olympic lifting for about two years now, and I noticed one person struggling with their front rack squat form. I didn't feel comfortable stepping in as a newcomer, and it was tough watching the coach not address or correct it. Form matters for safety, especially when we're working under load, so that was a concern for me. Also, the class flow was guided by a single small screen with a timer, and the alert to switch stations was super faint. I found myself constantly glancing around to make sure I wasn't missing transitions because I couldn't really hear the cue. Overall, I loved the idea of the class and the friendliness of the coach, but I would have appreciated more coaching engagement, motivation, and attention to form, especially given the style of training.
