I'm visiting Evanston from out of town and found Soulwich my last night here. The owners were so warm and personable, and the service was excellent. I got the Burmese coconut curry sandwich and it was everything I hoped it could be. I LOVE that they have seitan as their vegetarian option! It is so refreshing to find something other than a veggie burger or hummus wrap at a restaurant that isn't specifically a veggie/vegan place. And there are several unique and flavorful sandwiches to choose from! If I wasn't headed home in the morning I would most certainly be back for lunch tomorrow. I will definitely be returning next time I'm in town. In the meantime, please consider expanding Soulwich to Madison! read more

I'm so sad about this place. When they opened, it was obvious how much effort the owner was putting into it--the bread was awesome and everything (including the shredded pickled carrot and diakon, slaw, and the chips) was really fresh, and sandwiches were more than enough for two meals. It's why they got such great press when they started and why I didn't mind paying $11+ for a sandwich, chips, and a drink. The owner clearly still wants this place to do well, and I really feel for him. But the quality isn't there. They changed their bread (it's smaller, not as fresh, and tastes more processed), dropped three sandwiches from their menu, their pickled vegetables are now only carrots (no more daikon) and not as fresh as they were, and the chips were a little handful--and it costs just as much as when they opened. I'm really bummed, I loved telling people about this place, but I think unless they make some drastic changes and fast, it will be another victim to the lifecycle of the Evanston restaurant scene. read more

These sandwiches were pretty solid. I had it in catered form, so I'm sure they would have been even better in the restaurant. There was a lot of flavor, and the ingredients seemed to be quality. Two Gripes: When I peeled the foil back, there was oil between it and the bun, indicating a lower level of health than I usually prefer. One more minor one is that it was not that structurally sound, meaning that the contents fell out of the bun more easily than I would have like. We recently ordered a large amount of Soulwich for a catering event. They were really helpful, cheap, and friendly in helping us set up. I had the Indonesian Barbecue Sandwich and it was delicious. The chips were dank. And The fresh fruit they gave us was crazy. My one suggestion is to ask for fewer carrots on the sandwich, there were hella carrots. Highly recommend. read more

I had never heard of this place until I randomly found out about it through a friend. The Indonesian Ginger BBQ is my favorite sandwich here. Great prices, the manager is always friendly and it is family owned, and the food is amazing. I had never tried Asian fusion sandwiches before this and I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. Wow! Had a Tuna Rice Itsu Salad for lunch! It was great. Friendly family run restaurant with classy food in a casual setting. It's busy at lunch so pick the outdoor sidewalk seating. Food was delicious. Pork option is a smoky shredded pork. Not that lunch meat junk from other sandwich shops. Bread is locally baked and awesome. Crusty and chewy. The vegetables are fresh and crisp. Homemade fried chips are delicious. Service was very friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was clean and casual. Quick, tasty lunch. They DO accept cards contrary to other reviews. The only negative was the homemade Asian slaw. It was simply shredded cabbage, sesame seeds and possibly rice wine vinegar. It could use some shredded carrot and cucumber. Overall, a nice place. I have been eating at Soulwich since 2014 and it is my favorite restaurant. It has good prices for amazing food. I usually order the Indonesian Ginger BBQ with pork, and it is the best sandwich out there. I recently went vegetarian, and the seitan option is just as good- if not better than- the pork! After a couple bites I was convinced that the substitute was even better than the breadBeen eating here for a while now and thought the sandwiches were already amazing but the substitute took it to the next level. Tried Soulwich for the first time today and had a terrific experience! I ate the Thai Grilled Chicken sandwich and it was splendid. Enjoyed an interesting conversation with the owner, and was taken aback when he asked if I wanted to hook up the mp3 player I was listening to to the store's speakers. I hope the other customer's enjoyed the soundtrack to the movie Hero as much as I did. While the prices may at first seem a little bit high for a sandwich, you're definitely getting what you're paying for. I could taste a difference in the vegetables and sauces on my sandwich, and at a little over $7 I realized I was actually getting a pretty good deal for the quality. I had the jasmine infused herb tea, which was minty and quite delicious. I also had the Burmese chips, which were pleasantly spicy. I would highly highly recommend Soulwich to anyone who enjoys a good high quality sandwich. read more

I don't write many reviews, because most of the time I don't really care. But this place is just so good it needs to be tried. The gentleman that started it is so invested in each of the choices he makes for ingredients, we had a 20 minute talk about sourcing seitan. Seriously, 20. He knows his stuff. He was complaining about not being able to find a pork belly supplier that was up to his standards. The sandwiches are just amazing. Myself and some friends had several, and all reports were identical. I think every one (save one of them) is available in vegetarian, and he even took steps to see that one was prepared vegan for a friend of mine. The attention to detail is tremendous. If you put this shop in River North and started a rumour that Grant A's business partner's cousin bankrolled it, there would be lines out the door. But it's not. It's in Evanston. And it doesn't have a backstory other than incredible sandwiches. Do yourself a favour and pick some up, you'll see. read more

Now THAT is what I call a great sandwich! I ordered the Spice Grill, and it was definitely one of the better sandwiches I have ever had. The unique flavors from the Asian fusion style added a lot of tasty goodness that you don't find in your run-of-the-mill sandwich shop. The place itself has a nice, clean feeling to it. I felt very comfortable, and the people there are super friendly. The only downside to this place would probably be the limited selection of sandwiches and other menu items they have, but everything else more than makes up for this. This place is amazing!! The service is incredible and the food is absolutely delicious. I organized an event at Northwestern university and we had food delivered from this restaurant for two meals which both received rave reviews by all attendees of conference. Aside from that, Ash is simply the nicest guy ever. He went of his way multiple times to accommodate our requests and ensure we had delicious food. When the owner asked me what i was ordering i said "oh i'm not having anything" he then asked me why and i told him it wasn't my thing he then proceeded to pester and borderline harass me and my friends even coming over to our table to ask over and over again if i was going to order anything. My Daughter is Vegan and I am always looking for new places to try. I came across Soulwich on a google search and decided to try. This is not my neighborhood so a bit out of the way but well worth it. My daughter had the teriyaki tempeh and I had the goat cheese and fig sandwich. The sandwiches themselves were wonderful but the star was that bread. OMG that bread!!! We also had the spicy chips which are made in house and delicious. This is the most delicious food in Evanston, bar none. While College students pack the chain stores Soulwich is busy making tasty sandwiches --with better ingredients-- for the same price. Shredded meat is put in a bowl, microwaved, and then flavored with a sauce of the type you've chosen. Some veggies and cilantro are added; the sauce soon makes the bread soggy. I'm sorry; bahn mi this aint. The owner talks obsessively. I imagine the ecstatic reviews prove that this place is "good for Evanston"---sandwich places here being abundant but third-rate. OK, sure, it's better than nearby Panera. But it doesn't compare to Ba Le in Chicago, which has fresher bread, brighter flavors, weirder drinks, and no runny added sauces. read more

Really good sandwiches for about the same price you would pay at Subway. I had the pulled pork Indonesian ginger sandwich and it was excellent. I would recommend telling them to go light on the mayo, but otherwise the sandwich was a home run. The spicy chips are great too, not too hot but well seasoned.
