OK, sure, it's better than nearby Panera. But it doesn't compare to Ba Le in Chicago, which has fresher bread, brighter flavors, weirder drinks, and no runny added sauces. read more

This place has been open a couple of months now so I thought I would give it a try tonight. Overall, the food was pretty decent - room for improvement but I was happy with what I had (#8 Chicken Wasabi Teriyaki and infused caramelized onion). The big faults are the location, setup, and execution. At first I thought that this was going to be a Korean style place, but I then realized it was Soulwich, not Seoulwich. The location does not help this place's chance long term, the ice cream shop that was previously in this store went under in less than a year - it's just not a busy street that is going to get a lot of eyes. Inside the store, they kept the ice cream shop setup instead of moving the front-prep area to the back wall in order to make space for more seating. There are only four tables, which were small and had these weird "techno" chairs which were not overly comfortable. They wasted a lot of space with this layout and it just doesn't look inviting from the outside. Also, the back half only had a drink fridge and a very small garbage can that was overflowing with a box with more garbage on the side - which is pretty nasty, get a bigger garbage can and empty it more frequently maybe? The theme didn't really make sense since the menu had a heavier south Asian influence, but the few pieces of art were more Asian. I am also not sure why reggae was playing other than the people working there like it, doesn't add much theme wise. I get the impression this place is not actually owned or run by anyone of Asian descent, not that it matter foodwise, but doesn't help with the confused ambiance (4 tables is unlucky feng-shui-wise). The menu option was flavor based with different flavors coming with a choice of meat or vegetarian. The sandwiches are prepared relatively quickly and are made to order, the meats seem to be prepped like in any other sandwich shop. On the window outside they had stuck upon a take away or brochure menu which had some detail, unfortunately the menus on the inside on the TVs only listed the names, not the ingredients nor were then any brochure-menus to look at. The man who provided us service seemed like the owner or at least the manager and was very friendly. He explained the options and seemed really enthusiastic about his product. He started to go on about how the bread is from some famous bakery downtown, I have never heard of the place and he seemed surprised, but it turns out that the bread was actually pretty damn good. I guess he was trying to focus on the fact that they are trying local-source, which is nice and all, but you already have a niche gimic with asian sandwich if you can get better elsewhere. We had initially thought of taking our food to go, but decided to eat in on the small weird tables in order to give it a fair evaluation. The sandwich came wrapped in foil even when we had decided to eat in - no plate or tray, which I think was a mistake. The sandwich was a little wet with the teriyaki and aioli, but was good. A little too much carrot for my taste, but the sandwich was still pretty substantial, however, overpriced by about 10-20% compared on portion size comparison to other places in the area for counter service sandwiches. I also had a jasmine ice tea. It was okay, but it's not bottled or made fresh, he has some prepared drink cups just sitting there and adds some ice. The big fail mealwise are the chips which came on the side. If you are going to the effort or making homemade potato chips, then you should keep the fresh and warm. It's not very attractive to have a large popcorn machine like holder of potato chips just sitting on the counter and being served your serving in a small brown paper bag - not worth $2.50 if you were buying them on their own. We went in the early evening and the chips were already kind stale, no knowing how long they were sitting out. They also come pre-spiced with a spicy flavor, which would be cool if they didn't taste old. Keep them warm and fresh, and spice them at the time of order, it will give a better visual appearance. I'd consider going back to try another sandwich if I was in the mood, but there is nothing about the actual restaurant that brings you in. I recommend the owners try a new layout or at least consider new furniture and ambiance. Give people more information about the options (details also not listed on their one page website) that they can take the time to think independently. If you have the opportunity to move onto Sherman or Chicago, jump at the chance - the guy behind the counter actually seemed surprised we even came into his place, not surprising based on the location. I hope the owners work to improve this unique offering so the sandwiches can really shine. read more

Fantastic sandwiches aside, Soulwich has the best attention to detail I've seen in a small sandwich shop. If you ask for a cup for water, they give you a pre-poured cup with a lid. They bring out your sandwiches in a wicker basket and your slaw comes in a cute little Chinese takeout container. They're also just the nicest, friendliest bunch. I visit it after a hard boot camp work out and it hit the spot. I had a Wasabi Teriyaki Pork sandwich and my friend had the Indonesian BBQ. Both came in looking super hearty with the meat, the veggie slaw, and my favorite part, the hot crusty/crunchy toasted bread. I had this meal at 8PM on a Tuesday and everything still tasted fresh. Burmese coconut curry with pork is AMAZING! The meat is so tender and juicy. It must be cooked really slowly to have so much flavor. Soul satisfying fresh and savory sandwiches and salads. Our favorites are the Indonesian Ginger BBQ sandwich and the Tuna Rice-itsu salad box. Double yum! It is mouth-watering balance of spices, fresh veggies and choice of meat. We eat half and then the rest a few hours later- and it tastes even better once the spices mix together. The price is reasonable for fresh quality food and the service is outstanding! We arrived 15 minutes prior to opening and a lovely women came to the door- I fully expected her to tell us to come back.. yummmmmmmmmmmmmmm! My fiance and I were definitely pleasantly surprised when we tried soulwich for the first time. The sandwiches are basically a twist on the banh mi (vietnamese sandwich). It comes with the carrot and daikon pcikle,cilantro, and lettuce, but they have created unique flavors with the sauce and meat. My fiance got the thai grilled chicken and I got the Indoneisan one. Both were delicious! At first, I was a little skeptical bc each sandwich is ~$7-$8, but you get your money's worth. Not only are the portions huge, but the flavors are just perfect. SO looking forward to our next visit. BTW, the owner is hilarious and super friendly and I loved being serenaded by his co-worker singing a sugar ray song. read more

Wonderful house made chips come in little paper bags , three flavors regular burmese and ?. I love the sandwiches as well as the salads I have tried them all and it just depends on mood. Plenty of hot Siracha sauce available to perk your sandwich up. Vegan options too. read more

Ok sandwiches, but not great. The biggest issue is that they claim that they use an aioli on their sandwiches, but the aioli is basically nothing more than a barely-flavored mayonnaise (I couldn't taste any of the flavoring - it just tasted like mayo) that is then slathered on to the sandwich so much that you can barely taste the rest of the ingredients in the sandwich. I ended up having to wipe off all of the aioli from the sandwich; once I did, it was tasty, but you know there's a problem when you need to go that far to be able to eat your food. The slaw, however, was great. If I eat here again, I'll be sure to ask for the aioli on the side, if at all. read more

I was in town today for a noon Lacrosse game at Evanston Township Highschool. After the game it was time for lunch so I turned to Yelp. I found Soulwich with good reviews and recommendations. It sounded unique and tasty so I headed East and found Soulwich in what I think is the downtown area. It is a very nice area with a lot of places to eat but I stuck with my Soulwich plan. I was greeted by a very friendly man who explained the Soulwich options. I ordered the Indonesia Ginger BBQ vegi style (and i am not a vegetarian) and continued to talk to the man at the register who I found out was the owner. A great conversation was was then interupted with my lunch that was served by another friendly person. I sat at the window and boy was I suprised how great a vegi sandwich tastes at Soulwich. Absolutely outstanding and tasty. Would love to try everything on the menu but I live an hour away. I can't wait for the next game my son plays at ETHS. Well done Soulwich.
