Inside the publication was…read morean ad for an indie record store called Cactus Music, and said ad promoted lots of albums an audiophile could dream of. As a self-proclaimed audiophile myself, I was intrigued by the store. But since I lived more than a couple hours away, I never had a chance to visit it. Twenty or so years later, I finally did a few days ago for a listening party for Linkin Park's upcoming comeback album, From Zero. Cactus is a block away from both Houston's ever-so busy thoroughfares, the Southwest Freeway and Richmond Avenue. You have to have a good eye to spot it. Entering the shop is like a beautiful dream for anyone obsessed with music. Record stores are rare like payphones, but this one keeps the spirit of the former alive. Any format, any album can be found here. There are even some titles that are listed at a dollar so it's no wonder to see a lot of shoppers. Aside from the music and the setup, I was also intrigued by the clothing sold. I was penny pinching at the time of my visit, but I sure love to return and make a purchase.

The place is huge but half of it is taken up by surf gear, swimwear, and skateboards, but the other half has every genre under the sun represented well. The jazz section is top-notch for classics and quite decent for the experimental weird stuff I like to listen when I'm not in a Zoom meeting.

Sig's selection is wide and they have crate after crate filled with alphabetically arranged records from all musical genres. The upstairs is a cool, attic-style loft dedicated to true oldies. I didn't spot an elevator, so fair warning to those with vintage knees like myself. There's street parking and you can pull up right in front of the shop. The records at Sig's aren't cheap, but you aren't just buying music, you're buying into Houston's storied sound.

Joystix Classic Games & Pinballs is actually a working showroom that opens once a month for Pac-Man Fever Night, when every game is set to free play. It's one of the most fun and unique experiences in Houston. We hosted my wife's birthday party here, and it was fantastic. Renting the space was simple, the staff was awesome, and having the 1820 Lounge next door made it the perfect setup for a group celebration. Everyone had an amazing time. I highly recommend booking the showroom for events, you will not be disappointed. The owner is Charlie, he is outstanding. He is friendly, passionate, and deeply knowledgeable about pinball and arcade history. You can tell he truly cares about preserving the hobby and sharing it with others. He takes care of his customers and is very courteous to those who are considering a purchase. If you love pinball, classic arcades, or just want to do something different, Joystix is a must-visit Houston gem.
